Review Bombay Mahal - Montreal

Second time here. Great Indian food!! Beautiful flavours, friendly service. The lamb and butter chicken were cooked perfectly, tender and bursting with flavor. One suggestion: maybe replace the plastic straw with something more eco-friendly. Thank you.

Tried this place out after a colleague recommended it and I must say we were very pleased. My mom’s ultimate test for an Indian restaurant is the butter chicken, and Bombay Mahal had one of the best she’s tried. We got a plate of mixed vegetables, butter chicken, rice, 2 Naan breads (they are on the thin side so 1 per person is perfect) for two person it cost 35$, so a reasonable price! Our usual in Montreal is Star of India but this place is much closer to Laval and has a big dining room for the same quality. Bathrooms and dining room was very clean and service was excellent as well. Highly recommend!

I took all of my labmates for a special Diwali lunch here and the experience was magic✨🥂 We ordered soooo much!!! We made sure everyone tastes a bit of everything 🥺❤️ it was just perfect ❤️ We had 4 appetizers, 4 main course, lassi, naan and biriyani and finally ended with masala chai☕

The food was very spicy but I was willing to let it pass until I found a hair cooked into my onion bhaji. It’s all going in the trash and I’m requesting a full refund

It’s a decent Indian restaurant. For quality and quantity is average. Comparing to restaurants in Toronto it’s way below the standards. Dal tadka was decent. The place was too confined and overcrowded. Great thing is you can (BYOB)bring your on booze.

I have been trying Indian food in Canada for 6 years now. Nothing comes close to this. Every dish is amazing. The food is freshly made, tastes wonderful - can't stop eating even when full.... Highly recommend!

Great bang for your buck. Friendly service. Chicken Tikka (see pic) is always tender and tasty. Naan bread is oven fresh. Spicey green sauce does the job. Be aware it can be very noisy. Get there early like 6 pm or reserve. Bring your own wine or beer. Client since 2014.

If authentic Indian food is what you’re searching for, then come to this place. Our waiter was so sweet and welcoming, he even gave us a dish he freshly made, on the house. Food was sooo flavourful… Would def come back!

I’ve been to both the main restaurant at Parc Extension and its outlet on St-Catherine. I have to say I’m more impressed with the food from the outlet. I tried their Tandoori and butter chicken at the main restaurant, I remember the Tandoori chicken is dry, over cooked and burned, nothing stands out with the butter chicken either. At its outlet, I tried a Thali with Tikka chicken, lentil paste, curry veggie, nan and rice. Everything is good, lentil paste is very creamy and comforting, nan bread was soft, chewy, well oiled. I particularly like the Tikka chicken, was very well spiced and tasty, tender inside, crispy outside. Overall very pleasant meal.

Ordered for a veg and a chicken thali. The naan and the dal was the best among everything on the plate. The chicken curry was too soupy with no taste and the potato curry was too sweet.
Taste - 2.5/5
Value for Money - 3/5
Service - 3/5
Ambience - 2.5/5

It gave us the feeling of our home. Homely cook food.We ate full stomach as the food was tasty. Good location. Affordable price and great with friends

A very mediocre place in town. All the gravies are tomato based with very little variation. Even the taste does not relate to the name of the dish. Service standards are also very casual.

Located in Little India on Jean Talon, Bombay Mahal will serve you excellent Indian food, plus it’s a bring your own alcohol. I am big Lamb fan. Usually I opt for a butter chicken as well if I am sharing, but I tasted Lamb madrasi, with garlic naan, onion bhajee and some yummy bastami rice! Totally recommend if you are in search for some spicy food!!

What just happened? I played safe & ordered the onion baji and the somosas.. (amazing spices & delish with the mint yogourt sauce). but my friend shook his head and simply said there is no line up outside for the apps
He was right... he ordered the butter chicken. I think i tasted a little piece of heaven. The chicken is moist. The sauce was a touch sweet a touch curry and whole lot of butter-yum that was soped up in a flavourful naan
Definitely will be back or maybe #ubereats

Ordered delivery and enjoyed authentic Indian. Loved the papri chat! Dal tadka and pulao were medium spiced and a perfect combination. Chicken tikka masala was bit sweet and aloo paratha can be medium spiced to improve taste further. Garlic nan was great though. All in all a very decent experience for Indian food.

Crowded, staff/management rude, feel rushed to leave. Food was fine, but the sardine like seating and feeling of just being a number is a major turn off frankly.

I found out about this place on Mtlblog.com. It was mentioned as a really good Indian restaurant so i decided to try it out with a friend. There was a long line to wait in to get a seat. Usually a restaurant that is really busy tends to be good. We were first asked if we wanted to sit at a table near the entrance. Considering the amount of people waiting, I told them i rather not sit so close to the line nor the door as it was cold outside. We were told that there was a table that we could use, but we had to be out by 8:30 as they had a reservation. As it was only 7pm, i said that would be fine as i did not plan on being there for so long. Once seated, we were then told to move to another table that had no reservation. The place was packed and the tables were so close together that anytime someone had to get past us they had to suck in their stomachs to get past the table. Not a lovely sight when eating a meal to people's butts in your face. I saw other tables where one person kept pushing his chair back to get more room and in the process was squishing the lady behind him as the 2 chairs were touching and she kept pushing back so she could have some room to eat.

The server came relatively quickly and took our order. The appetizer came out almost instantly. Considering the amount of people there i was surprised. At one point my friend asked what kind of sauce came with the appetizer. and was promptly responded to as "green sauce". Yes I know my colours. I can tell it was green. I was not expecting such an unhelpful answer. Finally we were told it was mint.

After 30 minutes of waiting, i was getting impatient. I watched 3 other tables who had come in after us get their food. Finally i got up and went to inquire where the food was. I understand they were super busy, but if people who arrived 10 minutes after us managed to get their meal, what was the hold up on ours? They told me that it would come out. 10 minutes later it did. The waitress told me that they did not have appetizers. What is the difference? My appetizer came out within 30 seconds of ordering, but getting a bowl of curry chicken and rice takes 45 minutes?

Once the meal was eaten, i had no idea what to do for payment. I saw others getting up to leave without a bill, so i figured one must pay at the cash. I had no idea how they would know where i was sitting or what we ate, but to the cash we went. There was another line. I waited about 15 more minutes in line just to get to the cash to be able to pay. I finally asked a passing waiter what our table number was and after pointing out the table to him was told the number. I then had to fight with the line of people coming into to the restaurant to be able to get out.

All in all i was there for 1.5 hours. I was not amused. The food was wonderful, though the 2 dishes that my friend and I ordered were pretty spicy. It is not labeled as such on the menu. A few items are, but most are not labeled as spicy. While i enjoy spicy food, my friend does not. From experience from other Indian restaurants, we are usually asked if we want the dish spicy or not. Not at this place. Getting water was nearly impossible as i could never get the attention of a server.

Perhaps this place would be better on a weeknight instead of a Saturday night. Perhaps it would be less busy and less loud. That was something else about this place that i did not care for. I had to talk rather loudly in order for my friend to be able to hear. Either way, i will not be coming back to this place any time soon. While the food was great, the rest of the experience is a put off.

We ordered delivery which they said would take 30 minutes, took 2 hours even though I live right down the street from the restaurant. Bad service

Tasteless food , poor service, poor ambiance. I would definitely not recommend it to any of my friends.... Please try other Indian Restaurant in Montreal.ther way better than this...

Recommended. Very good butter chicken, spicy samosas. I recommend you try thr butter chicken. Its. Hidden gem on jarry dont be disappointed when you go inside its a small dim resto but the food will make it up for you

Good, but not exceptional. The vindaloo was mild at best, the chicken saag was tasty. Not bad, but not sure it warrants queuing up. It would be very average in the U.K. Or even Toronto. But definitely better than anything in Quebec City.

The selection and taste of our dinners were fantastic. Affordable, authentic and delicious. The place was packed on a Tuesday night which we took as a good sign. No regrets with our meal. Service a little slow at the start

This place serves pretty authentic Indian
food for a really good price and it is also a BYOB. The portions are good size
and the menu is quite extensive. I was not a fan of their tandouri combo, but
the lamb in yogurt was very nice, we ordered extra naan just to finish all that
sauce ;) . The place does get packed so I would suggest making a reservation.
We did not have one so had to wait for 15 minutes, but people that came later
had to wait even longer. Also try to get a seat at the room further from the
entrance, as the one closer to the entrance gets packed with waiting people,
gets cold due to the door opening constantly and overall doesn’t have a nice
ambiance. Overall good Indian
food
Kuldeep Mummidisetty
Despite its smaller size and less ambience. The food here is actually good. Do not take that Thali as it is. If you are a Indian looking for a place to it then make sure you specify the items to be super crazy spicy.

HOLY DELICIOUS.
Come to think of it, this is my favourite place to eat in the city! The food is consistently exceptional! Portions and prices are very fair! The lamb madras is to die for! The combos are also amazing, and plentiful! They certainly don't skimp out on their portions!
I definitely recommend it!

While the restaurant lacks any decor, trust me it's not missed when you try their AMAZING food! The chicken curry and butter chicken non-veg thalis were delicious! Going back for sure.
Road Tips
Bombay Mahal met my level of expectation based on all the positive comments I've heard about the place. Trying a little bit of everything was absolutely fun, but I was almost uncomfortable from overeating as my colleague drove me to the hotel. My Montreal colleagues don't even consider any other Indian restaurant in the city. Bombay Mahal is all they need.
Sean McKenzie-Mardelli
Can't find any Indian places in Montreal as good as this. The portions are a little small but the quality is very good. Can't wait to try more items from the menu.
Zed
Total absence of ambiance and decor. A paint job doesn't cost that much! Service is improving over the years. They still throw the ustensils, plates and the wine bottle opener at you as a DIY table setup, but now they go about it with a smile. One of the waiters always looks grumpy but he's actually the one with all the funny jokes. Food is always fresh and delicious which is why I keep going back.

Horrible. Went to dinner with five of my friends, amongst other things we ordered naan bread and rice, the waiter insisted we order more rice and bread even though we were reluctant and he wouldn't leave until we agreed. Very condescending staff, except for a very nice waitress. My friend ordered chicken samosas, but there wasn't any chicken in it (when he asked a waiter what type it was, the waiter simply asked him "Well what did you order ?" and agreed it was chicken). My Madrasi curry was bland, watery and had very few tiny pieces of chicken it it. When we went to pay, they just told me the final amount - no bill, so no way to check if the amount was correct or not. It's cheap and we didn't expect high class dining, but it still wasn't worth eating out. Will not come back.

Bad Service!!. First to begin, it was the first time trying out this restaurant. As soon as my daughter and I sat down, the atmosphere felt heavy and loud. Not a good combination for a sit down meal. I could hardly hear myself speak, and as I was making my order it was even harder to hear the waiter speak. We insisted on staying since we wanted to try something new. I had had him repeat himself due to the noise, which seemed to make him uncomfortable. When I attempted to wave him to my table, I could see he was purposely ignoring us since he never made eye contact, never asked how our meal was, if we were alright, or to even fill our water!!! We waved a second waiter to our table, whom better explained our order and was kind enough to help us sort out what we had ordered (due to confusion with the first waiter). We were over-charge due to the first waiter having us believe the rice was included in the order, but it turned out to be extra. He was much more wiling to correct this mistake and make our evening as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately, it did not suffice. The first waiter had seemed to be giving more hospitality to the other customers around us. First impressions are always the most important, and we will not be coming back.

-----30 Apr, 2015-----

Worst service!!. First of all, it was our first time trying out this one. As soon as I sat down with my daughter, the atmosphere was loud and heavy. I could hardly hear myself speak. Even to make an order, I felt uneasy because I was almost thinking the waiter couldn't hear me, so I had him repeating himself. Afterwards, each time I attempted to wave him over, he kept ignoring us. So I had to get 2nd waiter. I found out through him, that I was charged too much for nothing. Asked to have part of the order cancelled.
All in all, we weren't properly served. We felt ignored because the same waiter was appearing friendly and giving better hospitality towards clients around us- it was clear. I felt like there was a barrier because we did not look like the rest of the crowd. We shouldn't have to feel like that and we are not going back!

Smelly unwashed chicken. Ordered a butter chicken thali. The piece of tandoori chicken that came along had a horrible stench (like the chicken had not been properly washed before cooking). It was a disappointing & unpleasant experience. Plus it's overpriced, $12 for the thali (it's $7 for the same thali in nearby indian restaurants).

Best Indian BYOW in Montreal. Just like the title says. Everything is amazing, every dish. Cheap prices too. And take your own wine. Just don't get too full, sometimes the spices creep up on you!
Abricot_mtl
Very good indian food. When I am craving for Indian food, I go there!

The food is very good, very fresh and very authentic. They have plenty of dishes to choose from, and while in my opinion it is not cheap (around $9-$12 for a main dish), I think it is worth it.

I always order to go because the place is not the nicest one where to eat (Indian Curry, which is in front of the restaurant has a nicer decor but to my opinion, the food is not as good).
Yippy
Yippy. The food is always very fresh, portions are very generous, food quality is amazingly consistent, to go again and again !!!!

Bombay Mahal is a restaurant in Montreal with excellent Indian food that is very vegan friendly!! I let them know that I didn't eat dairy or eggs and they made a point of telling me what had the ingredients and offering alternatives (extra rice in place of naan/a separate dairy-free dip with the shared pakoora order). Would eat there again without question!

3.5/5 for Bombay Mahal. Most people in Montreal know that if you're looking for the most authentic Indian food, you go to one of Canada's most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods; the Park Extension area of town. The immigrant population of this area is made up of South Asians from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as well as Latin American and Haitian immigrants, and a dwindling population of Greeks. As such, this is reflected in the neighbourhood's cuisine. Bombay Mahal has been voted #1 Best Indian 2013 and #1 Best Indian 2014 by Cult MTL, so it sounds like they know a thing or two about great Indian food.
When you arrive at the restaurant, you'll notice that the place is located on the corner of an intersection, and that all three other corners house other Indian restaurants. The competition is evident. The space isn't much to look at. The restaurant is comprised of two rooms, both filled with fairly plain tables and chairs. The decor is minimal, but there are a few trinkets here and there. However, I'm never one to judge a book by it's cover when it comes to restaurants and would much rather allow the food to speak for itself. I had made a reservation since I knew that this place was popular and that I would be arriving with a bit of a sizable group. We were seated in the second room in a bit of a private nook, which suited us well. Again, the room wasn't much to look at, a little bit dark, but the tables remained occupied with customers of all ethnicites for the duration of our visit, which seemed to say much more than any decor would.

Our server wasn't exactly the most pleasant. He seemed inconvenienced by our presence, overall. One of my favourite parts about going to an Indian restaurant is getting to drink their authentic (hot) chai tea, and I was disappointed when there didn't seem to be any listed on the menu. Surely they must serve this staple! I asked our server about it, and he said that they did not have it. In that case, I opted for something that was listed on the menu, Indian Tea, described as an Indian soft drink (cold). I ordered this and was told that he already told me that they don't have any (this was not what I had asked for the first time). I pointed out that it's on the menu and he said that he didn't think that they had any more, but that he would check. In the end he never brought me the drink or asked if I wanted anything else.
The dishes available are pretty standard, and are up to par with what you would expect to see. We decided to begin with the Fish Pakora (Authentic Indian nuggets made with fish fried in chickpea flour batter). The food came out quite quickly, and while our table of six people all ordered various different things, every single dish arrived to the table correctly. The fish pakoras, which were supposed to come with six pieces, actually arrived with nine pieces. They were the best fish pakoras that I'd ever had! The outside breading was light and crisp, while the fish inside was still tender and moist. The flavour was delicate while packing a bit of a punch, and the accompanying mint chutney was herbaceous and delicious. I would normally dip (or drizzle) pakoras with tamarind chutney and this was a welcome change. Beyond excellent!

For our main course we chose a few dishes to share that we consider to be old standbys and trusted favourites; Vegetarian Korma ($8.99) assorted vegetables cooked in a rich creamy sauce with Indian spices, Lamb Curry ($9.99) lamb cooked in a curry sauce in various spices, and Butter Chicken ($10.49) boneless chicken baked and cooked in a rich butter sauce. We also included the standard accompaniments; Steamed Rice ($3.49) traditional Indian basmati rice cooked to perfection, two orders of Naan ($1.99) soft Indian bread with white flour baked in Tandoor, and Raita ($2.49) homemade yogurt whipped with herbs and spices. The portions aren't massive, but 2-3 main dishes will work well shared between two people. Every dish was quite excellent, but I'm not sure if I would label it the best Indian food that I'd ever had. Certainly not by a large margin. I would classify the food as very good, but also not especially surprising or different in any way. The veggie korma was done very well, and I especially liked the vegetables that they used (crinkly cut carrots) because I've had it this way before elsewhere and I liked the continuity. The lamb curry was the spiciest and it packed a wonderful kick from the expertly done curry. I liked that the meat didn't contain any bones and wasn't too fatty either (I've experienced this problem in the past at other places). The butter chicken, which is supposed to be the best in town, was good. I liked the big juicy chunks of chicken and the beautifully creamy sauce, but truth be told, I've had better. (I'm still giving my best-ever butter chicken award to Khazana in Edmonton.)
The rice was pretty standard, but cooked well. I sometimes like to switch things up and order coconut rice instead, but that isn't even an option here. The naan was exceptionally perfect - it had a nice chew to it while maintaining a delightful toasty crisp on the outside. And the raita was probably the best that I'd ever had, with its perfectly balanced acidic tang - I found myself eating it all on its own, let alone drizzling it over my butter chicken and curry.

I found Bombay Mahal a bit of a hit and miss. The service wasn't great, but the prices were very low. I liked that they aren't afraid to go all-in with the spice. Some of my dishes were excellent, while others were just fine. However, none of the food was bad, and I can see how this place could be viewed as a reliable spot to get consistently decent Indian food.
Lucas.lobban
Probably the best Indian Restaurant in Montreal that we tried. superb butter chicken in a thick cream sauce with just the right amount of piquant flavouring; the paneer was also excellent.Only thing they dont have liquor license but you can buy beer next door convient store and drink it with your food.
Ellen Burns
Go here for lunch.. Literally the best butter chicken I've ever had in my life.
They have really cheap lunch specials, I got a Butter chicken Thali for $7.50 which included green bean curry, butter chicken curry, 2 pieces of tandoori chicken (one leg, one random bit), salad, rice and 2 hunks of butter naan. Vegetarian? Get a Vege Thali for $5. $5!
(plus tax and tip, includes naan, rice, salad, yellow and green dhal and green bean curry)

This butter chicken was seriously amazing. Even my boyfriend thought it was amazing and he doesn't like butter chicken (thinks it's usually a bit bland). Would really highly recommend this place for really cheap lunch (between midday and 3pm), it's BYO wine too. Dinner prices still looked ok.. about $10 for a curry/Thali, $3 for rice, $2 for naan.. pretty regular prices.

Naan was also amazing! Sign of a good place.

Amazing Indian food! Just pick anything off the menu.

Yum but.... Pretty good butter chicken and mango lassi!! The rest i was not a huge fan of. I still come back for the mango lassi& butter chicken! Delish!
Mylie
Good. It is not bad, but not great either. Butter chicken was just ok, same for the naan. The onion bhazi and the mango lassi were good though. Not too expensive. Service was ok but we were rushed to leave the place when we just finished eating and drinking our water.
Claude-Nicolas Demers
Best indian restaurant ive tried yet....everything was perfect, the only down side is that its always full and there is always a line up other than that the food is perfect waiters are really friendly.... the best thing to do there is to get 2-3 meal per person and then you share everything.... you should really go there and dont forget your wine they are a "bring your own wine and beer"
Emcm
Good food, good prices. I got the butter chicken. The sauce was amazing, but I felt the chicken was too dry. I'm guessing they cook it early and keep it warm all day, hence the dryness. My friend LOVED her vegan vegetable plate. Will go back eventually to try it again.
Deeanna
First time; did not meet my expectations. I went there to eat for my birthday because I have never tried Indian food and I really wanted to. We were 3 people and we shared everything. We ordered the butter chicken, non-veg-thali with curry chicken and vegetarian samosa; all for 30$. The only thing I really liked was the vegetarian samosa.. it was so yummy! I loved the texture and spice. I really did not like the non-veg-thali with curry chicken, I didn't like any of its flavours and especially not the chicken. I find there wasn't much flavour to it besides the outer layer. It also wasn't moist; it was dry. The butter chicken was very creamy but the chicken was veryyy bland. It was just cubed chicken pieces thrown into a sauce. Another few other things I didn't like was the waiters and atmosphere. The waiters were uninviting and cold. The place was not very clean.. below average. I would only go back there for the samosas.. order to-go.

Perfect spice. Best Lamb Vindaloo i ever tasted in Montreal so far, good food cheap price, i wish this place is in my neighborhood so i can eat there everyday!

My first time at this resto, I loved the butter chicken and naan bread. But my curry lamb tasted alot like BEEF? Over all for the price it was well worth it. And I will go back :)
Ontario Girl In Montreal
Took our new student from Bangalore, and she was thrilled with it! love this place for the Dosa masala, but I've never been disappointed in any of their food. Yum yum. Just be prepared to wait, it's no secret that this place is great food at a low price.

Best Indian Food. Best Indian food I have experienced in Montreal..Hands down. Butter chicken was amazing, naan was great, mango lassi...mmmmm. And great samosas. I caution you, Madras is really spicy!
N.y.gourmet
Just wonderful. We were 4 to go there tonight we were all so thrilled with the experience....great vegetarian food, terrific naan bread, the decor was very simple and felt like you were in an eatery in india....we liked the total lack of pretence...the service was rapid and efficient, not overly friendly which we like....nobody wants to become the waiter's best friend....overall just a fun easy place with good food at a reasonable price....what's not to like......
Felipe
The place is dirty, the food is served on prison-like trays, the waiters are far from goodlooking, but the food is heaven. Best indian food in Mtl.
Tim
Price wise, the best indian food. Restaurant was smelly, servers were cold and the general cleanliness of the place was...well below average. But, service was fast, food was delightful and the price was right. Not for fussy people, but definitely a must if you love indian food.
Peter Hanz
I hate the service! Its very slow. The food was very ordinary n expensive.
Nymphea_s
Nothing special.. 1. It is very dirty. I cannot imagine how the kitchen is....
2. The service is horrible.
3. The food is ordinary and the place is packed of western people which is an indication that the taste of the dishes is not authentic.
Caroline Petit-Liang
Ridiculously addictive. I can't comment on how authentic the food is here, but their butter chicken haunts my dreams. I find the chicken tikka masala tastes very similar to the butter chicken except that it's spicier, with no hint of tomato whatsoever. My favorite way to eat from here is to cover a piece of their delicious naan bread with butter chicken sauce and a few chunks of chicken (there is a decent amount in each serving, but this dish is really all about the sauce) and roll it up in a drippy, messy but oh so satisfying 'wrap". Their mixed vegetable dish is also amazing, but not on it's own! Make sure you've got yogurt or milk near you for it's spice.

Speaking of drinks, you have got to try their lassi! My personal favorite flavor is mango. The restaurant also serves interesting exotic sodas, such as Limca, which is also quite tasty and surprisingly low in calories.

Two things I've had from there that I'm not a fan of is their tandoori chicken and their steamed rice. My boyfriend, however, absolutely adores their chicken, so I'm comfortable admitting it's not a matter of quality but personal taste. When it comes to the rice, my issue is that it tastes very salty. That's a completely forgivable issue to me, however, as this food is best as takeout anyway, and making my own rice is no issue.

While the staff at Bombay Mahal are pleasant enough, I would honestly not recommend eating at the establishment. Takeout is your friend! It is very small to the point of feeling cramped and serves water in metal glasses that give it a metallic taste. It might be worth it, however, for their discount lunch specials. Overall, if I could afford (financially and weight wise - that butter chicken sauce is rich!) to eat here every other day I totally would, so if you haven't tried this place yet you're definitely missing out!
DGQC
Outstanding food, incredibly reasonable, basic decor, don't plan to linger! Would take friends there anytime. Reservations strongly recommended so as to avoid the lineup. Parking can be a hassle.
Xia0lei
BEST & CHEAP. You must have the butter chicken, shrimp or lamb korma & the naan bread :) I love this place - maybe...except for the service. Bring your own wine! 15-20$ per person. Lunch menu is around 7-8$ per person (Tali plates)
Karine81
Love it!. THE best indian restaurant in Montreal. Very authentic and the service is getting friendlier months after months. Oh and did I mention extremely affordable!

Best Indian food in Montreal, hands down
Juszeppe
Best!. I have eaten a lot of Indian food in Montreal, and this restaurant is by far the best, not only in taste but it is very reasonable as well. I don't live very close by but every time I eat at Bombay Mahal I am glad that I made the trip.
David
A Montreal MUST. The last few times I've been to Montreal we made sure to visit Bombay Mahal. The staff is helpful and friendly and the food is impeccable. One of the best Indian places I've ever been to.
A Growing Appetite
Cheap and varied, accommodating to both vegetarians and meat lovers, not to mention its a byow makes this an excellent resto to end up on my MTL Foodie tour list. However, if there is a next I’ll definitely be taking out. One thing I learned about eating Indian cuisine that I thought I’d share is that it’s better to pair their spicy and saucy dishes with beer and/or white wines like a Gewurtztraminer whose sweetness offsets the strong tastes. Oh and another thing don’t expect to see knives so you might want to come prepared with wet naps. Just a suggestion since it is finger lickin good
972360_10151505817030566_1622557974_n
Eating Out Montreal
The place itself is really nothing special.... But who cares, they have butter chicken (right on picture).... Man, that was DE-LI-CIOUS!
Montreal Food Divas
Indian food doesn’t get enough love in Montreal! Sweet Pea has been gushing about Bombay Mahal for years, but Diva #1 kept missing out on Sweet Pea’s Bombay Mahal nights. Finally the Divas and Sweet Pea made plans to go to this BYOW hole-in-the-wall in Parc Ex for what was deemed as the best Indian food in Montreal. The lineup that went out the door was proof enough that Bombay Mahal was popular. For some reason, though it is a BYOW restaurant, we didn’t bring any wine . While the Divas arrived at the restaurant first and waited in line, we called Sweet Pea who brought in the wine that she was planning to bring to a party later that night. Poor Sweet Pea, she went to the party empty handed but we all left glowing with a nice little buzz.
The Eating Project
i like the food here. they don’t hold back on the spicing unless the dish warrants it and they don’t bother asking whether you want your food mild, medium, or spicy… they cook it to the heat level it’s traditionally supposed to be.

My friend and I were both pretty happy with our meal. The only thing I would have changed is to order something less creamy and more spicy next time, because the creaminess tends to get heavy after a while.

Most of the dishes were pretty good choices and reflected the best Indian food experience we could have. While you don’t go to places like this for the service, if you’re lucky, the interactions you’ll have something memorable.

Bombay Mahal is vegetarian friendly, and even if you’re not a fan of spicy food, there are many great non-spicy alternatives for you wussies out there. This place should not be overlooked. I assume any day of the week is a busy day for these guys, because we went on a Wednesday night at 8:30pm and the place was bustling. The waiter took a while to take our order though, and when he did, it seemed like we were being rushed and was hard to get any explanation of the menu from him. We did however talk to a really nice and cordial guy behind the counter when we went to pay, I didn’t get his name but I take it he’s from England because he said “quid”… and because of his accent, duh.

The lamb in yogurt and coriander was just perfect. Coming in a thick, creamy sauce that was a touch sweet, the lamb in it was tender and well cooked. The sauce double as a good dip for the naan and to pour over the rice. Mmm.

Bombay Mahal, a Parc-Ex joint specializing in Northern Indian cuisine, is extremely popular amongst locals. The wait during its peak hours can be long because it's always hustling and bustling with a diverse group of people who recognize good Indian food at affordable prices. Many believe it's the best Indian restaurant in town, and while I can't vouch for this, I've remained a loyal customer since my first bite all those years ago. I usually begin any Indian feast with Chaana Samosas, deep-fried triangular pastries stuffed with a mixture of peas, potatoes and spices. Here, the complementary sauces, tamarind and coriander, are really runny, so I omit them. The spicy samosas are pretty good, probably some of the better ones around town. They taste great cold (i.e. refrigerated leftover), so I always make sure to place an extra order for the road. The Masala Dosa is crepe-like and filled with a spiced potato and vegetable mixture. When rolled, it's about a third of a meter in length, bu
