Review Sushi Tri Express - Montreal

Negar Rahele Safe
Covid friendly (separate tables), Very good sushi (we tried many kinds of maki) with fresh ingredients. The place is not very fancy, but it is worth going, you will enjoy the sushi, and they have a very nice staff. Will definitely go again.

This place is a pure delight. From the tacky decorations that covers the entire restaurant, to the friendly staff, to the DELICIOUS sushis, you can’t go wrong at Tri Express. Most probably the best sushi in town, and very affordable for the quality you get. The tasting menu is a great option for your first time there. You won’t be disappointed! Oh, and their Tri Sauce is so good, you won’t want soy sauce with your sushis ever again.

Very good I would recommend the pizza and tartar it's different from what your used to. Sushi were also good but there are better spots for sushi only.
Liam Croteau
Great atmosphere and great quality sushi. Definitely recommend getting the chef's choice special to get a variety of sushi you might otherwise wouldn't have picked.

Best sushi restaurant in the plateau! Everything was fresh and it reminded us our trip to Japan in a not too long distance ago. Pandemic obliged, we ordered thru their website and took our meal in one of the many parks nearby. The staffs were super nice and their sushi were delectable!
Sara Tavakolian
Great service, great food and great decorations! We ordered an 11 pieces for each, 22 for both of us for only 25$ per person. It includes the sashimi, tuna and shrimp tartar, and sushi plate at the end. Great experience, will definitely go back again! Reservation is recommended as they don't have more than 8 tables.

The house sauce was good, better than just soy sauce, very busy but quick to order and finish. The staff is so sweet. I waited about 20mins for my takeout, i saw others come pickup after ordering thru phone so if you want to call ahead, that's an option. Everything is fresh and tasty which is all i can ask for from sashimi

Very nice authentic sushi place. Good choice and some unusual chef items I haven't seen before. Looking from the outside you'd never tell it's a remarkable place. A hidden gem!

Had an incredible meal, as always! The tar tar was truly a gourmet delacy!! We can't wait to come back! Presentation & flavours are worth expierencing this great restaurant!

In my opinion, best sushi in Montreal. It is not authentic Japanese but the modern fusion style is done so well that it doesn't matter in the least! Amazing place.

Excellent..best in town!! fresh!! beautiful cozy place & the staff were just great!

I just love this place, once a week for my sushi craving 🍣

Eating Out Montreal
There are more and more food delivery services in Montreal: Uber, Foodora, Just Eat, À la Carte Express, and the new kid on the block, Wizrd. I was contacted by email because I'm, like, a super freaking great and popular blogger. Hahaha, just kiiiidding! But seriously, I guess I do have some kind of reputation, being one of the number ones in Montreal. Ugh, I wish I could say THE number one (I'm tied with Montreal Food Divas).

Being from Western Canada this was not the best sushi restaurant I've been to but also not the worst. Most of the varieties of sushi were very good with lots of local tastes and ideas. I found the shashimi to be cut very thin but it was fresh and tasted good. I did not enjoy the atmosphere as much as many of the staff were either not that friendly, hovered over you while you ate, or were cutting up fish and vegetables right next to your table. There was also a weird vibe at times in the restaurant and they do not serve alcohol. Otherwise however I do recommend this place for the sushi itself.

I love sushi but sometimes it’s hard to find a good place that has fresh fish on the east coast. I’ve found some great places on the west coast and I had kind of given up in finding a great place in Montreal. My friend was in the mood for sushi and told me I needed to try Tri Express. Shame on me I had never heard of the place. Located on the Plateau Mont Royal on Laurier close to Papineau the place is pretty cool. The decor is kind of eclectic but all done with a charm in this small location. There is a bar and some tables but it does get pretty crowded.

Tri Express has been on our radar for quite some time, it’s known as THE spot for affordable sushi that doesn’t skimp out on quality in Montreal. They only take cash, they don’t serve alcohol (a deterrent for us for sure), and their tiny establishment means that you cannot linger over you meal – but the fish is fresh, the sushi made well, and they have a few inventive dishes on the menu.

Very good sushis for the price and they are fresh. The place is a bit small and location is not the best. Tri vs jun-li vs Park.... I think I will go with tri express for quality and money. Hands down
Pissed_wb
Eclectic with interesting preparations. OK for the price although the fish was not quite fresh . Maybe it was an off night because I heard good things about the place
Zee
Amazing sushi! The price is very high for the food, but I have never had a bad experience here and feel that the cost is worth it on occasion.
Laurence Nadeau
Delicieux!
MTL Foodsters
From the quality of fish, the freshness of the seaweed to the perfect textured rice, mastering the art of sushi is no easy feat. Having traveled in parts of Asia where 7/11 sushi far out beats most Montreal establishments, finding a sushi place that doesn't break the bank but delivers on freshness, flavour and creativity is difficult. Tri Express is one such place, we are glad to have in our city!
Corinne Andre
Chris Pelletier
First, the decor, absolutely stunning! If you're lucky enough to get a table in that tiny restaurant, try the discovery menu! A 5 service quite frankly stunning! Very creative sushis, the presentation is always very refined! One of the best sushi place in Montreal for sure! *Cash only folks!
Annie Duhamel
Sarah
Best sushis in town, cozy setting and friendly staff! Prepare yourself to wait for a table though, as everybody want to eat there! In the summer, they have tables outside as well.
Eva
Creative sushi. Of course, it's not typical Japanese sushi, far from that. But it's still pretty good. It's one of my top 5 sushi place in Montreal.

WOW that SUCKED!. Furthest thing from Japanese food...ever. Miso soup - more like most poop. Did the waiter accidentally drop a salad in the pot. There was lettuce and seaweed in my soup. Perhaps they should slice their sashimi thinner I almost tasted it. Pfff what a joke!
Melodiebouchard
GuyB
Overrated. They don't take cards and don't give you a receipt. I pay my taxes, they should too.

Amazing food. Sushi is a passion of mine and I've eaten some in almost every sushi place in Montreal. I love Tri express because it's precisely what sushi should be: high quality ingredients, good balance and precise execution, amazing taste. The rice itself is well prepared and if you've eaten a lot of sushi you know how important that is. There's some makis that are truly original, which is refreshing when you're used to all the same variations that are served everywhere. The price is roughly the same as any other good sushi place, not that cheap but not that expensive either. Expect to get out at 100$ for two people. Only downfall: crowded and small. I haven't been there since they made it larger but as it was before, you sort of wanted to get out after eating instead of chit chatting over tea.

My boyfriend keeps dragging me here and I don't understand the hype. The seaweed is double wrapped and not fresh (chewy) the rice is so so and the seafood is not very fresh, but I am picky regarding freshness as I come from the Martimes. If you've never had really great sushi you might think this is wonderful otherwise I would suggest boîte geisha on Mount Royal which is much better and more resonably priced.
Mo
Horrible sushi. Spicy tuna had full of fish scales and wasn't fresh.
Ldhoffmann
Fabulous Sushi. I've known Tri personally since his days at The Sushi Bar on the main. His little restaurant is cozy and of course his sushi is probably the best in town. I just wish he'd be as creative as he used to be! Nevertheless, it's to die for!
Lewaterboy
Yum yum. Great place and not too expensive. small place so gets full fast. love the bathroom decor
Paul Kemp
Love it!. Some of the best sushi you'll find in Montreal, and the restaurant has a unique and coze atmosphere. Everything is really tasty - especially the items made with lobster and Tri's special sauce. Service was fast and friendly, and the price is reasonable for the quantity and creativity of the dishes.
Selina
Very nice service (the waitress was really nice and gave some constructive suggestion when we ask for advice) and the special fish dish was really really good. Although the sushi combo was rather ordinary, we would definitively go back for the maki and special fish dish.
KJ
It's okay, nothing special. I don't get the hype. It's expensive, and I found the makis to be overloaded with sauces. Maybe that's why others like it.

The Nigiri wasn't bad, but nothing impressive either.
Burritoboy88
Melt on your mouth sushi. Been to all the food spots around Montreal and this is the most delicious, creative sushi out there. Was blown away at my first experience and the high marks given to tri express by my friends did not allow my expectations to be let down. Simply amazing
Jordan Steinberg
Classy artistic sushi. Cozy atmosphere good prices. Cash only though. The service was exceptional. Go for the omakaze for a treat.
Marie-Claude Senecal
"The" best sushis in Montréal. Very "haut de gamme", tasty, fresh and creative.

I can't wait to go back to Mtl.to have more of Mr.Tri sushi.I call it unique because it is different from what I have from different sushi places I have been.
I just recommended it to my office mate who's is visiting Mtl.in November.
Me.gusta.comer
Not exactly traditional sushi but was delightfully delicious! We ordered the omasu? sets 1 & 2 which consisted of a sashimi appetizer, some nigiri and some makis and a salad appetizer, nigiri and makis. The server offered to mix up the accompanying nigiri and maki so we'd have more variety - that was nice. The salad appetizer was amazing! I think it was crab, puffed rice and what I believe was pop rock tobiko. Oishii!!
Only criticism was the menu itself which was only available in French and we're supposed to mark/check off our order on it but no visible/obvious place to check/select some items.
Lagourmande
Excellent!. I love this place, the sushi is excellent but i also love their dishes and salads.
The decor is so cute and different from any other sushi place. It is a great place if you do not plan on a dragged out dinner. It is not fast foody but it's not the kind of place you stay at for hours.
everything is always fresh and tasty.
my MAIN issue with the place is the cash only policy, it's annoying and yes i get it you can just try and make sure to bring cash with you in advance, but still I always seem to forget no matter how many times I've gone. I wish you could just use your bloody cards.
other than that love it.

Hamachi is not toro.... I walked into Tri Express with very high expectations. Having looked at their menu beforehand, my heart was set on experiencing some authentic blue fin toro - something I have yet to find elsewhere in this city. To my surprise, the sashimi being sold as "toro" was in fact hamachi, or yellowtail. Although it was decently tasty, I was very disappointed. With such a good reputation, one would think the menu items would be what they're supposed to be. Maki rolls were decent, lobster sashimi a la tri was tasty. 7/10

This place had good value relative to other sushi places, fast service, and some intriguingly unusual takes on sushi standards; but I have several issues with it. 1: it's 2012, being cash-only (no cards) is problematic for many many people. 2: certain overwhelmingly strong sauces end up causing many dishes to taste the same -- the lobster sashimi ended up tasting more like horseradish than like lobster. 3: the restaurant is tiny and packed tightly, the decor is incredibly busy, and the turning of the ceiling fans made the lights flash diatractingly. These issues aside, it was quite tasty, and I might come back but only if I'm in the area.

Superbe. Whenever I am in Montreal, I go to Tri Express for a visit. Have always been pleased with food. Do not care about the decor (you like it or hate it). I love this place and have always been satisfied.

Vraiment excellent. Allez y!
MissDJ
Sushi was good and very fancy but I found it way over priced... Paid 50$ and still wasn't full. Not in my top 10
Ashley Jade
I had very high expectations before heading to this restaurant and was disappointed... They constantly use this mixture of tempura and fish in everything so it everything ends up tasting the same.
Jorge Andres Zapata
Dominic Valois
Sushi Lover!. Chef Tri is the best! Loved the sushi and their home brewed soya sauce. Atmosphere is nice, simple and unpretentious. It's a nice place to drop in and either sit at the sushi bar or at a table. I am so glad Chef opened up his own place. Talent continues in Montreal. Kaizen is not the same without you there.
Caroline
Horrible!!!!!!! Some of the worst sushi I've EVER had! I've had better airplane food and the layout is ridiculous we kept getting bumped around this was supposed to be a celebration dinner and I came out in tears and trying not to throw up!
Urbana

Gemma Fish
Huuuuuggge disappointment. Kanda quality with a side of tasteless mash.

Don't know if laurels exist but there definitely resting... horrible service (rush us out in half an hour for $60).

Japanese food which is affordable and of good quality doesn't exist in this city....

Tri express another part of the sub par crowd.... don't bother.
Emmanuel Cazeault
Le meilleur a Montreal , rien de moins
Marie-Pierre

Chef's Set Dinner. For the best of the best, opt for the off-menu Chef's Creation set dinner. With a variety of sashimi, nigiri, as well as nori, cucumber-wrap, and rice paper rolls, you are able to experience Tri's artistic cuisine at its finest!
Mounir Bashour
Tri is am old friend of me and another old friend. Omakase here is the best value in the city.
Blue Dude
One of the best sushi places in town. Went there and didn't know what to order. Tri made his creation for 2 people and it was amazing. The place is a little small so you have to reserve but the food and ambiance is spot on.
Teddy Chan Tin
What an art. High recommend to any lovers of sushi! I have travelled the world and the sushi is just heavenly made and such a good experience. I will go again and try other combination.
JT
This is not Japanese. I wouldn't call the food here "Japanese". Maybe Japanese-influenced, but that in no way detracts from the fact that everything here is great. Very imaginative rolls that taste great, the specials are unique, and the service here is friendly! Not much space, which is unfortunate, but the space that they do have is quaint.
Samer Kano
Double check you bill. Everything went fine until I went to the cash register,
when the cashier asked the chef the total for my order he guesstimated 50$ but the actual total was 34$.
In the heat of the moment I didn't realise it.
Only on my way home it hit me that Mr Tri ripped me off by more than 15$.
I didn't dispute the surcharge and will never again go back to this restaurant.
Scott Broady
Awesome! Delicious, fantastic presentation and an explosion of different flavours and textures. Not much room but a cozy & friendly ambiance. Highly recommended. Great value for the price. No alcohol though, but the green tea is excellent.
Justin A. Kausel
Tri is a master of the culinary art Japanese fusion! He will leave you stunned by sensation and pleading for more!! Unique one of a kind in Mtl
Andree Proulx
Sushi in the park. Last summer's innovation: friends, wine and Tri's sushi in parc Laurier. A crowd pleaser.. Tri's sushi are art pieces.
Mike
Their miso soup is both tasty and comment-worthy, because it is so different from standard miso soup. Instead of having tiny slips of leafy greens inside, there are full leaves. Add Enokitake and carrots for somesignificant body and some tofu for something to nibble on, and the result is a soup that’s uncommonly good for the North American scene.

Tri Express is fairly well known (so no need for any introduction…) and my first visit was back in 2010 where my food journey was next to none, so I did not overthink about my experience in there. Recently, a few of my colleagues went there which reminded that I need to go back to have a proper review of this place. Little note: I have to thank Mr.Butter for being very considerate that evening.
CCUinMTL
I was immediately hooked on this unique and creative sushi and ate it non stop. Over the years the flame dimmed a bit (I think the quality may have dipped about a year ago) and I started experimenting with other sushi joints. Recently I have been rediscovering Tri Express, largely because my GF has remained a fan.

Finding a sushi spot in Montreal is no difficult task. They seem to be everywhere you look, like pigeons and bike couriers. Finding a good sushi restaurant on the other hand, can be challenging.

Chic Little City.
A favourite of mine for a few years now, I've been reluctant to share this absolute gem of a sushi spot with the world of my (probably like five total...) readers. But alas, I give in! You have been loyal, and it
