Review Chez Bong - Montreal

Pretty great! Everything was tasty. Waitress was nice. Love the chicken and bibimbap. The only thing I would say though is the stir fry’s are pretty oily. They also don’t take reservations so be prepared to wait a while

I really like this restaurant. The Duk bok kki is really good. It is super spicy and delicious~! My kids also like Bu ulgogi. Itvs really sweet Korean style. But the restaurant was little bit small and street parking was hard to find.

Just wanted to say I ordered from skip the dishes and it’s super cold out so I believe that’s why the food was overly cold so I did not account that in my review… overall I ordered the grilled chicken which had little to no taste for Korean food thought I had covid but luckly I ordered a side of the Korean chilli rice cakes appetizer which was good and the side of season potatoes that came with it was also nice. The chicken came with a side of dry arugula salad which was dry and unpleasing seems it’s put there just to make the dish look more full…. Outcome: I wouldn’t order skip the dishes again, but would definitely give them another try, in house dine in.

Quite an unexpected surprise. Very good and nice staff. We tried Jajang Myoen and Kimchi Tofu Bokkum. We also had the Gun Man Doo (fried dumplings) and where really good (beef) They also have good prices. Totally recommend

I feel that this place is a bit hidden, but when I entered the decoration and ambiance were amazing. I ordered spicy rice cake skewer, dumpling and tofu soup. It also came with a bowl of rice and two side dishes: kimchi and potato. All of them taste great. The skewer was crunchy outside and chewy inside, not to sweet with perfect seasoning. Really recommended. The dumpling sauce was so tasty, it was salty and tangy and not to strong to overpower the dumpling flavor.I spent my time looking for the recipe of this sauce, but couldn't find it. The sondubu jiggae was so refreshing, it has tofu, pork, eggs, veggies and seafood. I came on a rainy day, this soup was perfect, I picked the right dish. The side dishes were all tasty, I prefer the potato one than kimchi. The kimchi had a bitter taste at the end, but overall it was good. Some dishes are not listed on menu, but displayed on the wall, such as jajangmyeon and fried chicken. You can always ask the server and order it. Although the ambiance, deco, food and price were excellent, but they have to put emphasize on their restroom.

No doubt the people and service here are nice, but as a Korean who is familiar with Korean food, the quality, taste and ingredients, not so good. Kimchi bokkeum bap is USUALLY made using a type of ham or a luncheon meat, not pieces of pork strips, this matters! Soondubu JJIGAE is made with small beef strips, not pork. Using beef ads flavor to the broth when mixed with seafood. And haemul pajeon (translates: seafood with green onions crepe) The haemul pajeon here, had NO squid or octopus and hardly had any trace of green onions. Food quality and taste, 1 star. We did take out and transferred from the Styrofoam to our own dishes. This location was in China Town, Montreal.

Extremely delicious food with a very warm and inviting atmosphere. Been coming here for many years and it’s still one of my favourite restaurants!

Nice little place to eat korean food. We had soondooboo jjige and dolsot bibimbab. Both were pretty good.

My first time Chez Bong and not the last. I really enjoyed my meal and the service was perfect. The place was clean and the food was very good for a fair price. If I have one word to say, its gonna be...Yummy :)
Eating Out Montreal
I had been meaning to go back to Chez Bong for a while--I went about 5 or 6 years ago mostly because it was in the book 'Cheap Thrills' (they tell you where you can eat for cheap in MTL). Obviously I had loved it AND I love Korean food AND it's in Chinatown (because here, if it's anythin' Asian, it's in Chinatown...which we will henceforth call Asiatown).

Love this place, one of my favorite korean restaurant. The prices are fair and the food is amazing! They have some authentic korean main courses(bibmbap, bulgogi etc). The sea food pancake is just perfect, the fried dumplings are juicy and crispy, with all the others small appetisers that it come with you will not be disappointed.

Chez Bong is a cute little basement Korean joint. They don't offer table-top BBQ, but the menu they have is great Korean cuisine that's reasonably priced. Some of the items might be a little on the spicy side for some people, but this is the norm for much authentic Korean.

Chez Bong is a real diamond in the rough!

It CAN be easy to miss if you don't know it's there and, if a Korean friend hadn't suggested it to me, I may have walked right on by without ever noticing it.

If you're 2-3 people I would suggest this battle plan:
1. Any appetizer - they're pretty generous,
2. One order of #9. Chicken and mushroom stir-fry (to share family-style),
3. One bowl of white rice per person ('Extras' section),
4. One bowl of the 'soup' ('Extras' section) - it's a 'soup of the day' deal. Their chicken soup is especially awesome!

Super casual joint, clean, courteous service, prices are affordable, and quantities are generous.

I always leave happy and very satisfied!

For what I like this place is awful.. I love Korean BBQ short ribs. How its so good around the bone. That sweet salty marinade. Like to cook it myself so its fresh but I've made an exception with this place the past times I've gone. But the last two times we're an exceptional disappointment. I'm not sure what's happened but the speed in which they have delivered me the food (within 5 minutes) shows that it was precooked for me -- not on order. WORSE the last (and very last time I will go) they were not presented in the short ribs but extremely dry de-boned and over cooked pieces of meat that had very little flavour one is accustomed to bbq short ribs. A rather peppery taste which doesn't complement but rather masks the flavor. Even so underneath all the masking of hot spices I tasted poor meat. This place is going down hill fast. From the cracked and graffiti-ed signs they haven't fixed in the 2 or so years I've noticed it to the quality of food. Anyways, at my last visit I couldn't eat it for the fear of potential food poisoning. Shortly after presenting my plate, I paid and left in disgust barely touching it. Guess I need to walk along Ste Catherine's at this point on to get my fix. Never going back again.

SO GOOD. But so expensive. so dont be surprised at the end when you receive your bill.

Ok in terms of value. Got some daikon kimchi (which was normal, and I suppose they bought them in bulk..),and raw onions as appetizers ....

black sauce noodles was not good

bimbimbap was fine, but again,it'd really hard to mess it up = v =.

got a very weird seafood pancake. (it was more like 蛋饼 chinese omelet )...
it's not bad, just not right, that's all.

at the end of the day, i think it is good value for money.
it's in similar price range as ganadara, but a bit better in quality.

we were also wondering why business was so slow on a friday night...lol

Food is okay, but nothing special. Jap chae came swimming in oil, overcooked and not particularly tasty. Service perfunctory at best.

I love their bulgogi!

I went to this restaurant with a friend since we both wanted to eat Korean food. We both enjoyed the side dishes that came with (kimchi, savory potato, and soup) but I was rather disappointed with the serving size and had to order more dishes to feel full. Our bill came to 48.25 and truthfully, I would have been more full eating elsewhere at a much lower price. The service wasn't that great and the waitress had a blank look in her face when we tried to get her attention and to order additional food. I had really wanted to do Korean BBQ self style, but it wasn't worth the price and it wasn't what I had in mind when my friend said it was her favorite place. All in all, I don't think I'll go there again.

BEST KOREAN RESTO, GUARANTEED. Best Korean restaurant that I've ever tried in Toronto & Montreal :D

OMG this place is a hidden gem in Chinatown, right next to newly opened Ching Hua dumpling place. Heard Chez Bong has very authentic Korean food, but I'm Korean who likes nicer look ;) The sketchy entrance door of Chez Bong always made me walk away.

Tonight I ordered Korean spicy cold noodle (not on the menu), yuk gae jang (Korean beef soup), & bibimbop in hot pot for two. The cold noodle has *perfect* texture (like al dente for Italian pasta), *very spicy*(by request) beef soup was just like the one I have had at one of the best resto in Korea. Also bibimbop has Korean authentic ingredients as well as its taste - unlike other Korean restaurants in Montreal, Chez Bong's food we ordered was all good and authentic. Food was so delicious that we couldn't think of taking more pictures. Here we are missing a pic of beef soup. lol

Next time I'll try pan-fried spicy squid dish and bul-go-gi on the grill for sure. Plus Korean green onion pancake!

If you like Korean food, this is the place you should go to. Service was amazing - unlike Hwangkum, potato side dish and kimchi was so good. Simply unbelievable.

100% amazing place.

Excellent Korean home cooking. Ok, let me preface this with: I am not Korean. I have never been to Korea, and I haven't eaten at dozens and dozens of korean restaurants the world over. However, I know what honest food tastes like, and this is honest food. I've been here at least 4 times, and every time I am impressed by the exceedingly friendly service and down-home, no-nonsense, what-I-imagine-a-korean-grandmother-cooking food. On my most recent visit I had the seafood stew with noodles, and holy COW was there a lot of seafood in there! It was perhaps the most generous seafood soup I have even eaten! It was like HALF SEAFOOD, half soup! Clams in the shell, whole crab legs, squid, shrimp, big chunks of fresh fish with fins still on it, oh em gee it was so good. It was like my Korean grandmother (I'm not Korean remember, just imagining) looked at my scrawny arms and legs and said "you need to put some meat on your bones! Eat this soup!" I couldn't stop raving about it.
I have also tried their very good wonton soup, which may or may not have been "traditionally korean" in any way, but it was still tasty, and the kalubi beef, which I think was exactly how that dish is supposed to taste.
I've eaten lots of bibimbaps in various places, and to be honest I think it's kind of a boring dish in general. The bibimbap here is similar: filling, properly executed with the sizzling stone bowl, but ultimately unexciting. I guess it's a safe bet for the unadventurous? (The best bibimbap I have come across is Kazu's beef rib bibimbap, definitely not traditional but those beef ribs.... oh man.)
In conclusion: go to Chez Bong, order something spicy and full of love, and just feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Chez bong. The noodle with black bean sauce is the best i have tried in montreal! It is also very affortable! the place is adorable, it looks like an old-style apartment.

Bad kimchi. I second Ipanema's review.

Ooh... really??. I visited this restaurant twice while on business and believe me the second time was not out of choice. Both times I went, neither my friend nor I could finish our dishes because it was so bad. To be specific, we had seafood hot pot, soy bean soup and kimchi soup and they all tasted like water with some seasoning - not unlike what you'd expect a college freshman who's never cooked in his life to be able to whip up from reading a recipe.

Now, I'm Korean and I've had Korean food all my life so I don't agree with this other reviewer who feels this is good authentic Korean food. Maybe authentic enough, but really bad. If this restaurant has such a high rating, that's a sad statement about the state of Korean food in Montreal. I love Montreal, but if you want to try good Korean cuisine, you've really got to visit Toronto where there are two Korean towns.

Authentic Korean food.. Two words, Kim Chee. Two more words, Korean BBQ. My husband having lived in Korea for a number of years, nearly fell out his chair when he tried the kim chee. It's the real deal, not the half-marinated napa cabbage they call kim chee in the U.S. My friend that was with us had been craving the self-cook Korean BBQ since the one in her town had closed a few years back. The restaurant is on the outskirts of the Chinese Quarter on a lower level from the street and a bit easy to overlook if you're not looking for it. The interior is unassuming, typical Chinese Quarter decor. There are two BBQ tables and the rest are standard dining table. The service is competent and efficient. The food is very good. We received 3 banchan of pickled julienne radish, kim chee, and a savory marinated potato. We ordered 2 additional dishes of kim chee, it was that good. We even purchased some kim chee to go!

The prices were really good compared to Korean restaurants in the U.S. We will definitely come back to Chez Bong the next time we visit Montreal.

Ahhhh ! À noter pour la prochaine visite.
Zesty And Spicy
The real love is in the main dishes they serve. I unfortunately don’t remember the Korean name for what I order but it was a stir fry of pork, tofu and kimchi. Obviously mixed in with a load of veggies and some Korean rice “pasta” all that in a decently spicy sauce… Ohh did it made my belly happy that night.
