It was a good experience eating Indian food out there in Montreal. Thanjai is good place and provide good variety of indian dishes. We had ordered dosas and they were truly great in taste.
Thanjai is one of the few great indian restaurants in Montreal. It’s always busy and I doubt they take reservations. We tried their masala dosa, idli sambar and chicken 65 and everything was very delicious. Their service is a bit slow as it’s always crowded. Other than that I recommend this place if you crave for some good South Indian food!
I ordered potato baji and chilli chicken as appetizers, potato stuffing inside was cold, and big chunks of roasted chicken breast and chopped raw vegetables (Capsicum, onions, and fresh green chilli) dipped in chilly sauce. Order Lamb kothu parota, and I found some unidentifiable black warm kind stuff, when I inquired about it they said it rice grains, which made me puzzled how come rice grain in parota?. The one star ⭐️ is for mango lassi.
This is one of the goto places for Indian-Chinese in Montreal. Though they specialize is South Indian cuisine, the Biryani, Naan, Manchurians are very good. We had two kinds of Dosa, very crispy and Sambar was amazing. We liked the Manchurian as well. The service is friendly, totally a good place to hang out with family and friends for a peaceful dinner. P.S. Good to reserve it advance as this place tends to get crowded easily.
Indian food cravings satisfied.. thanjai serves perfect Indian cuisine tasty treats for those foodies who drool on Indian food .. vada sambar dip was yummy 😋.. also the chicken masala dosa was crunchy with chicken masala fillings which tasted just on point done so right .. the ambiance is a little flashy and the prices seems to be high too
But the taste of Indian dishes when you have big cravings is worth it... overall 7.5/10
When you travel abroad, you look for places which offer similar cuisines as in India and when in Montreal, you woudn't have to go far and just visit Thanjai which offers some awesome lipsmacking South Indian dishes. We ordered Chicken Manchurian for starters, Chicken Kothu, Rava Masala Dosa and Chicken Biryani. The chicken manchurian was had that Indian-chinese flair and smelt perfect. Having a dish in Montreal which we drool on back in India was really awesome. The manchurian had the right amount of sauces, spices and was cooked really well.
The rava masala dosa was another standout dish, dosa being served so well in a different country was really surprising to see. The masala tasted authentic and the crispiness of the rava dosa was just perfect. The chicken kothu was something that I tried for the first time, its nothing but chicken and paratha crushed and cut together and mixed with spices and served hot. The kothu was really well cooked and spiced really well, the chicken was tender as it was cut into bits , I had heard about the dish but hadn't had the chance to have it in Bangalore, being a dish which I had for the first time and having it in Montreal, made the experience even more exceptional. No, being a biryani lover, I have tasted a hell lot of biryanis so tryin a biryani abroad was something different, but, the biryani rocked it. The biryani was cooked in a very authentic way, spicyness can be customised as per your choice as they generally serve it a bit spicier. The rice wasn't really basmati but tasted really good as it was cooked to perfection. Overall an awesome experience at an Indian Joint abroad. When you're visiting montreal and want to try some Indian delicacies, this has to be one of your choices.

Very interesting to taste authentic south Indian food. The Paper thin Dosa is delicious. Took the Lamb thali to try their food. Not too spicy, but very flavourful. The owner came to see if all was as expected and he explained their process for the kitchen and food. Thank you. We'll be back for sure
This is the definitive dosa destination in Montreal.
Excellent value, great food, consistent and delicious. We get there about once a month. Lunch is easier than dinner; on busy nights, the wait can be an hour!
My favorite Indian restaurant which serves amazing south indian dishes. The dishes are as authentic as they could be and delicious. Have been there on many occasions and never disappoints. Must visit if you want to taste true indian food in Montreal.
Well first experience here for lunch on a Wednesday and the place is still packed at 2:15 pm, that is the first good sign!
The service is quick and kind,
The menu is extensive and it's probably an asset to come here with knowledge of all the names of dishes or be accompanied with someone who can make you try thing you wouldn't know otherwise,
The Thali is a tradition dish that comes with everything, you choose shrimp , Lamb, or chicken all the rest of trimming are there : 3 vegetable dishes with varied intensity spice , Rice, n'an breads, and the meat you choose.
Overall average, compared to other pla
I've been 3 times at Thanjai and loved it everytime. It is southern indian cuisine and has dishes I have not seen in Indian restaurants around Montreal. My favorite is the Shrimp curry. Their specialty - Dosai crepes - are something I've never had and is quite interesting with accompanying sauces. It's a BYOB place which is great as I always have beer with Indian and I get to bring what I want.
I recommend it to all my friends !
A dinner at Thanjai Restaurant is an unforgettable experience. A great restaurant and the food are great. The butter chicken is tender and smothered in delicious sauce. Their curry is just enough spice and its great. The staff are also friendly and assist us to what kind of menu we really want to try.
I had been to this amazing restaurant for dinner last week during my visit to Canada on a vacation. It's really hard to find decent Indian food in a foreign country. And so I had no expectations and just went in casually. We were served a buffet containing typical South Indian dishes like vadai, sambar, pongal, dosa etc. All of the dishes were freshly cooked and they all tasted very good. The taste was too good just like one of the authentic hotels in Tamil Nadu. The service was also good. And we really had a pleasant dinner that day. I highly recommend this place to everyone who visits Montreal and also to the residents over there.
If you haven’t yet to Thanjai, you may wonder what is a “traditional south indian cuisine” means. The dishes are inspired by home cooking and the traditional menu of the south indian cuisine. The chefs really put an effort to all the dishes that they made. Keep it up!
Thanjai restaurant is a favorite not just only by locals but also the destination to the people who are after the taste of a real south indian cuisine and easy on the wallet too. I strongly recommend to taste the menu in their curry section. I really love the taste of their shrimp curry.
This is the best authentic south indian restaurant. As I entered the restaurant, the staff greeted me with a smile and helped me choose what meal I want to try. I tried their shrimp curry which is really great and tasty. The spices are just right and the ingredients are all fresh. Looking forward to dine here again.
Its great to find an Indian Restaurant in Montreal. As you step in on the restaurant, you will feel as though you are in India. The food is simply authentic Indian and arrives in style. Also the amount of spices is superb. Our dinner was such a great experience wherein the staff are very friendly and happy explaining the dish to us while serving. Keep it up!
This restaurant has been around for a long time, but continues to produce good and exciting food. Don't be afraid to ask for off the menu items, especially their specialty naan and masala dosa. Our lunch is great, as it is a great value for all the differing south Indian dishes available at a very reasonable cost.
The quality of food and the service is outstanding. This restaurant has been in this place for a long time and has maintained the food quality and service. One of the better places for Indian food in this area.
Thanjai Restaurant has an excellent indian cuisine with a sufficient selection of food, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Service is very efficient as this is a busy place with a well deserved reputation for great Indian food. My favorite was definitely the butter chicken, particularly accompanied by the Naan bread.
The service was great, the meals even better! Indian hot lamb vindaloo had my mouth watering and just the perfect kind of heat. Enough chilli to make my mouth numb. My eyes were tearing up a bit. Great effort by the cook and staff.
An ideal place to have dinner with friends. Each one order a different curry from their extensive menu and then we share and enjoy them all. I have been 4 times in India and I can say that this restaurant in Canada takes me there every time I go. Reasonable price and smiling staff. The service was great, the meals even better! Enough chilli to make my mouth numb & eyes were tearing up a bit. Top effort by an authentic Indian cook & staff.
The food is phenomenal, with the added benefit of a knowledgeable and understanding staff, who will gladly help first time guests with where to start. All the food is fresh, flavourful, and divine. Care is put into each and every dish, from the rice and Naan (flat bread) to all the entrées and specials. Vegetarian options are widely available, as well as entrée options with meat and fish. Great authentic indian food and good service makes this the best Indian restaurant we have been to in our place.
One of the Indian restaurant in Canada that is my personal favorite, which I have been privileged to share with various family and friends. The service is world class, with every member of the staff providing a personalised and family feel.
Amazing authentic South Indian food restaurant.
I have been there three times and it is always full with many Indian people! A sure sign!
The food is quickly prepared and the spices are amazing!!!
A note to beginners, if you have never eaten spicy food, even Thanjai's less spicy food will be spicy for you!!! You need to be aware that Indian food uses many spices! That is the beauty of their cuisine.
I have not had one bad dish yet! The menu is very varied and some items were completely unknown to us. The waiter are very helpful and can explain all the dishes.
This is a must visit if you like Indian food!!! The best in Montreal by a long shot!
Love it ! love it ! Great food for the cheaper price. The restaurant buzzed with excited energy and was comfortably full with seemingly satisfied patrons. When you enter you can see a miniature of a Hindu temple which is awesome to see.
We started with Dosa, which is essentially made out of rice and lentils (I guess), and it was truly remarkable, perfectly cooked and served fresh. My wife and I shared one order, which consisted of mini rice cake dip into yellow sauce (the name I remember Idli and sambar). And tell you what I loved it. For the main course, I decided to go chicken biryani and my wife ordered another dosa this time Masala Dosa. The dish was executed perfectly, and the bright colors of the ingredients peeking through the thin rice paper made it a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. The servings were big and a reasonably priced, it was well worth it.
And there is a gentleman who finally ask us to try their traditional desert and it was amazing! Amazing! The name was Asoka (We found out later that gentleman is the owner of the restaurant so humble and very welcoming). Though I would love to be selfish and keep all to myself, the food of this restaurant amazing and it is too good to stay hidden for long. There’s no doubt this restaurant will quickly become the hottest reservation in town for Indian food for sure. Me and my wife plan to go twice a month at least to taste other varieties (in fact there is plenty of variety in all sections)
Respectable Dosa Place. Bearing in mind that your South Indian dining options are limited in Montreal, this place is good. The Dosas are very tasty, although there is not enough filling in them. I've been there a few times, and it seems like the amount of filling has decreased a bit (maybe it's all in my head--who knows).
The potato bonda appetizer is perhaps even more satisfying than the dosa.
Generally, I recommend the restaurant. The food is very tasty, and the service and atmosphere are good. Prices are also very fair.
"Wow the best indian food"
Today I went to this restaurant with my friends for lunch. There are lots of varieties we ordered different dishes and seriously the food is awesome .Felt nice after long time I had tasty food finally thank you thanjai for the delicious lunch.
Excellent, très accessible, bon service, à adoptet
Never tried South Indian food before so I was excited. My chicken masala dosa was delicious. The boneless chicken curry was good and so were the appetizers (onion bhaji and potato bonds). Negative: vegetable biryani was blah & boring! Slowwww service.
The Best south Indian Food in Montreal. Yummy!! Very Good and Delicious Indian food I ever had. Especial the dosa, very fresh and delicious. Tasted like home food. The sauces are excellent. Lemon rice was very god. The service was also very good and the food on time. I will visit them again soon,.
Best soth Indian restaurent. The focus is on food cooked with patience served at the good dining place, and I am instantly drawn to this world.
Dosa and kothu. Try every type of dosa (not the regular sada dosa) and any Non veg kothu. DELICIOUS
Best Bet for South Indian in Montreal. A wide variety of authentic South Indian dishes (dosa, idli, vada, pongal and others), friendly staff and the rather curious absence of South Indian options in Montreal (no, Sri Lankan is not South Indian) have made this restaurant a winner in a short time.
The dosas are better than anywhere else in Montreal (though a bit short of standards in places like NYC, SFO). The idli & vada with coconut chutney is a must-have. And often overlooked Tamil Nadu street-eat staple is the parathas with chicken or lamb curry - delicious.
Worth a visit - especially if you think Indian food is all about naan and creamy butter chicken from Jean Talon :)

Yumeeee. Tried dosa...it reminded of INDIA again...awesome :):)
I lové thé food.its yummy especially chilly chicken and dosas.i went with my family.service was good.waiter was very friendly and helpful.
Tasty South Indian food. This is my first time I enjoyed a tasty and spicy south Indian food after coming to Montreal..Thanks to Thanjai !!!!
There are two things we liked about Thanjai: First, its prices ($25 per person tax and tip in? wow). Second, the fact that the dining room was, with the exception of our table, filled with Indian families. You know you're in good hands when the local community frequents a place for a Sunday dinner. We will certainly be back for a closer look.
Thanjai’s menu largely consists of South Indian favourites like dosa, with a variety of different (and interesting) fillings, as well as biriyani and kothu parotha. The speciality of this place is a six feet paper dosai.

From humble beginnings as a small, take-out joint on Victoria to a roomy space able to seat hoards of I-want-to-eat-right-here-right-now customers on Van Horne, Thanjai and its owners Kumaresan and his wife are committed to introducing locals to the flavors of Southern India. Those delights include a vast selectio
