Review Cafe Via Dante - Montreal

Excellent authentic Italian restaurant with in an unpretentious setting. A lot of the clientele are regulars, and the waiters are very attentive and know their stuff. The Dante salad is to die for, and the pasta of course, is state of the art. Grazie mille!

Fantastic Italian. Staff is wonderful. Must go to if visiting Montreal.

The pastas and antipasti were good. They also gave us extra antipasti on the house which we thought was very kind of them. Soon after we received the bill, we were shocked by how much they charge us on something that was not on the menu: $100 on antipasti alone. We understand that the waiter was trying to upsell the menu, but we were not advised on the price. And also when ordering the pasta, the waiter did not inform us that we have 2 sizes to choose from (entrees and main size). So we ended up with oversized meal and overcharged bill.

One of the best Italian restaurant in Montreal. The prosciutto melted in mouth. Each dishes were delicate and very tasty. Great service. You have the impression that you invited in somebody's home. Don't judge by its look but by its quality of food. Service was a bit long, so don't be stressed. Difficult to find a parking so don't be discourage. It's totally worth it.

The service is GREAT. I had mushroom appetizer and the rabbit. It was also great. My companion had the beef on mashed potatoes and octopus as a starter. This was not so great. The octopus was burned to the point you tasted charred grit on the smaller pieces. The larger pieces were too salty. The beef was just shredded beef on potatoes.... really boring. With all the great Italian restos to choose from I would think the quality and Italianness of the restaurant would be better.

Just noticed you are closed permanently. My wife and i, our families and friends have had many special nights here over the past 15 years. Very sad to see you go— and huge thanks if you are reading this for the many fantastic meals and memories we had at your establishment. You were a treasure in the neighbourhood and our lives.

The wine was excellent, the food absolutely fantastic, the vanilla custard desert is so smooth and creamy you want 2 of them and our waiter "Carl" was exceptional and personable! We will definitely return to Cafe Via Dante the next time we're in Montreal. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates fine Italian food.

This has been my husband’s and I go-to place when in little Italy. The service is always friendly and spotless. I have a hard time giving them a weak review but I was disappointed with last night’s dinner. I ordersd a pasta with meat sauce and got a half empty plate of pasta with little sauce. I turned around to look at the menu on their blackboard to check the price in case I ordered an entree by mistake... not the case. My friend’s plate was too spicy and couldn’t finish it. We both didn’t have the heart to complain. I hope they get their act together because we do love the place.

A cosy family-feeling restaurant with delightful Italian food.

Our antipasto was cuttlefish dressed in olive oil and vinegar, accompanied by pepper, zucchini and other vegetables. The cuttlefish was chewy and fresh.

Our first main dish was the Bucatini with shrimps and clams. It met expectation as a pasta dish.

Our second dish was the Battuta Di Maialino. The pork was well battered and grilled, and managed to retained its juice while being a bit crispy on the two sides.

Been there 5 times and the quality and service are tops. Everything is freshly made from ingredients bought that morning at the Jean Talon market. I dream about their entrées of gnocchi with mushrooms and truffles, and the eggplant parmigiano. Mains include the signature rabbit casserole, several pastas de jour, a fish dish and a beef dish (short ribs were amazing; bison filet tender and flavourful; tagliatelle with veal cheeks in bolognese sauce was divine). House wines by the glass are excellent at $10 and full bottles from $40 to $80. Introduce yourself to Dominic and Giovanni and feel like part of the family.

Great food, friendly service and unpretentious atmosphere, which are exactly what you want at around $50/person in Little Italy. However, I will no go back as I find their practice of charging $1.00/person for "flat water" to be dishonest and in bad taste. We were not informed there was a charge for "flat" water when we were asked if we wanted sparkling or flat and when I asked about the surprise $4 on the bill I was told it was for "special filtered water" and we "could have had as much as we'd wanted." Really? What a costly business practice in the end for Via Dante.

Great meal and service at this cozy, neighborhood restaurant. One of our waiters suggested that we start with a glass of one of their house wines, a Primitivo from Puglia -- it was superb: smooth yet very flavorful. We ordered pasta dishes, the tortiglioni pancetta & caprino and a tagliatelle dish. Both were excellent. What brought the experience to a whole other level was the hospitality of the staff and owners. Julian and Michele treated us like kings! We'll definitely go back the next time we're in town.

Deception. Je suis allé là lundi et je ne sais pas si le chef était présent mais tout était vraiment trop salé, je ne goûtais pas les aliments. Le service était ordinaire, le prix exhorbitant vu la qualité du repas. Mauvaise expérience pour moi!

Great. Expensive, but great food and service! Worth it!

Bonne bouffe sympa et authentique, pâtes maison par le proprio, un resto de famille italienne.

Too expansive. Normal italian food so too expensive, near 200$ for 2. A salad of only aragula.

Trop cher, plat italien habituel mais a coûté 200$ pour 2. Une salade en entrée composée uniquement de roquette et rien d'autres. N'ynretournera pas.

Great food. The food was exceptionally delicious, We tasted most of the appetizers and the halibut as a main was really good. The owner suggested a private import wine that was excellent.
I would return in a flash !

My only complaint is that the place was full and there was no A/C

Café Via Dante has great food, charming ambiance and gives you that ‘I must be in italy’ feeling we all crave.

What an awesome little spot! A waiter who wasn’t harsh to look at, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable with a superb “can-do” attitude. That’s the way I like to start every meal! We started with a wonderful appetizer of Prosciutto San Daniele, cut with their very impressive prosciutto cutting machine, housed in a little glass room at the front of the restaurant. These are thin slices of pure salt-cured heaven.
