My work colleagues and I decided to visit this "new" restaurant after hearing recommendations from my dear's colleagues. This restaurant location has been cursed for a long time. "Fish House" and Le Biftheque (loved the croutons) were the previous host of this location. I had high hopes for "Gold Mark Chinese Cuisine"...
First time here for dimsum on a Saturday. We made reservations; surprised they even accepted reservations on a sat. It wasn't too busy which was a pleasant surprise. Nice and big place. Food was quite good. Loved the grilled squid, sui mai and rice noodle rolls. The haw gau were huge.
Dimsum restaurants have always had it tough due to how competitive this genre is. Especially when they claim to be "fine dining". This level is hard attain and even harder to maintain. Restos really need to pull out all the stops in food quality, service, ambiance...all of which are equally important. I mean, why else would patrons pay twice as much at times? It almost seems that these restos try to present how high end they are by the size of their chandeliers!
My experience at Gold Mark today wasn't anything to rave home about. They tried but did not deliver...at least for fine dining standards. The food was a bit better than average, but not worth the price tag. The only thing I will mention is that they served one of my favorite dimsum dishes - Golden Needle Noodles (which is a direct Cantonese translation). Something that is extremely hard to find and they hand made the noodles. Nice touch and I wish them all the best but we'll have to see if they will stand the test of time.
