Situated south of Diana's, Phoenix Restaurant was only a three-minute drive down Woodbine. We arrived to a partially-full restaurant, making me glad that we hadn't come during the lunch rush. Without further ado, I proceeded to order a glass of Iced Hong Kong Milk Tea and a plate of Green Tea Egg Waffles to share.
For a HK-style cafe, Phoenix's dessert selection was pretty impressive: Brick toast, toast cubes, pancakes, and waffles were some of the options. Egg waffles were a new addition to their menu, and were advertised via a simple, colourful promotion poster in the entranceway. In addition the ever-popular Green Tea and Black Sesame, the combos were also available in Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, and Mango, each varying slightly in price point depending on popularity.
Being Chinese I'm a sucker for the authentic white cut chicken and the ginger/green onion sauce. 😍 My mom is pretty picky about eating out at Chinese restaurants since many of them steer away from the original flavours. But she loves this restaurant. Phoenix has affordable prices and great food. Will go back again
Excellent cold HK style milk tea. I have only been here once (today) and was very impressed with the selection in the menu. I ordered the baked chicken rice and it was pretty good. The chicken which was fried was excellent (as was the fried egg that it came with). I thought the tomato sauce that it came with (the sauce that's normally on the baked rice dishes) was a bit on the sour side ....could have used a bit more sugar to offset the sourness. I "upgraded" to a cold drink for my meal and was really impressed with the cold HK style milk tea. Typically, most restaurants would just be giving you a hot milk tea and adding a bunch of ice cubes .... making it a "warm" and diluted tea. But this one came without any ice yet it was ice cold and that contributed to the nice and strong flavour that was still in the cold milk tea ...very impressive.
Nice cold honey lemon tea. Been here a couple of times for dinner. Good constant hk cafe style food. and very good Honey Lemon Tea (cold). The meats on the toppings are surprisingly tender. good rice quality.
I had a ox tongue on rice once- soft and yummy. that means they did a good job because this is hard to do.
Although they close a wee bit early for Chinese places - 10pm
I'll be back!. Great hk style food. best hoinan chicken rice--rice is flavorful, chicken is tasty and tender; love the sour spicy sauce too, although the minced ginger seemed a bit on the salty side. perfect hk style milk tea + coffee blend. and my table neighbor's malaysian curry looked wonderful as well.
from breakfast to tea sets to dinner to a la carte, there are sooooo many items on the menu, one can basically eat there 3 meals a day for a whole month without having to repeat a dish, seriously. they all sounded good on the menu, but not everything comes out the way you had expected it to. like, my bf (a newbie to hk style food) ordered a prawn salad w/tobiko & seaweed, thinking that should be quite japanese, but i forgot to tell him that's hk style salad that's made w/lots of cooked potatoes and mayo. the first couple bites were ok, until you realize the prawns were sliced in halves sideways and couldn't help but wonder why they're being so cheap. his pork chops in sweet corn sauce was ok, but not out of the world. he was surprised about the big portion, though, seeing two full slices of pork on the plate (and now he complains about not having enough rice).
it was a good meal, after all. but lines can accumulate during peak hours. we waited about 15 minutes, arriving at about 1pm on a weekday. but the line comes and goes. there was no wait shortly after we sat down, and then there was a few people waiting again as we were leaving. so try your luck as you go.
My friend and I chose to catch up here since the food is good, the space is spacious and perfect for some catch-up time, and it’s affordable! It’s definitely a restaurant that you can return to time and time again since there are so many choices on the menu.
Phoenix Restaurant serves one of the best Hainan Chicken rice dishes I've ever tried and the accompanying steamed rice is also delicious. However, I found that the quality of the dishes has decreased over the years - it used to be much better. The service was insanely fast though - we were in and out in 40 minutes.
Before I begin, the one thing that is a MUST HAVE is the HK coffee tea drink.
Yummm... today was the last day to use some free coupons for Phoenix Restaurant, so went there for desserts after dinner. This is the Panna Cotta , which was deliciously creamy. I love the mixture of the cream pudding with the mango puree. Not a fan of th
As the quintessential Hong Kong institution of the Cantonese take on Western classics, Phoenix restaurant 金鳳餐廳 is very popular in the GTA. Another sure winner is the Baked Chicken Rice Casserole is sure to bring childhood memories. A beverage you must order would be the Hong Kong style milk tea and for dessert the French Toast with condensed milk cannot be missed - savoury and sweet at the same time!
