Review Old Country Inn - Markham

My absolute go-to restaurant in Unionville that definitely has that European vibe! I love the fact that they maintained and turned a house that’s more than 150 years old into a place where people can come and dine in. As a European myself, I can attest to the authenticity of the food, which remains delicious over the years. The staff is friendly and kind, and the prices are very reasonable.

I took my in-laws here when they were visiting Toronto. The food is quite good and unsurprisingly not pricey at all in a touristy spot. I had ham and highly recommending getting two pieces instead of one, very tender! The restaurant building itself is historical and staffs are very nice.

Excellent experience, this is our second time here. Love the Sea Bass and the Hungarian Goulash was amazing. We also had a side order of delicious mushrooms in a garlic sauce.

Great prices for Unionville, feels like we were in Europe. The gazpacho was EXCELLENT and the cabbage roll & schnitzel felt very homey and clean. Free bread too!

Good Schnitzels. Great service. Everything was well prepared. The atmosphere is quaint and the music very charming. This is a great place to bring your parents.

A gem in Unionville with wonderful and understated food! Loved the Weiner Schnitzel as it was crisped to perfection that came with tasty home fries. Sons chicken mushroom penne was flavorful and chicken breast was so moist (not dried like many places). And my wife enjoyed her Waldorf salad which was fresh with vegetables and a slightly creamy dressing. Loved the service and friendliness of the staff! Our waitress had her own dog snacks, that my puppy enjoyed. Yes, It's dog friendly on the patio.

Excellent experience, I've visited it with my family on a few occasions and is the ideal location if you have a craving for Austrian cuisine. The proprietor and staff are very kind and welcoming on every visit.

Feels like we are in Austria. I really liked Gulasch soup, Schnitzel, and Shirmp(seafood dish). Delicious food and kind staff.. Viennese coffee with Sachertorte was awesome. Will absolutely come back again!

The Hering in Rahm was a soused herring served with a sour cream apple salad. The last time I had had had fish served like this was at Aragvi, a Georgian restaurant, which I had had with fondness. I enjoyed this Hering in Rahm dish too.

ONLY pay in cash.....be careful.
They are not using chip and pin technology for credit cards!!! Thanks to reading a recent review....while in the restaurant, I learned that someone's Visa card was compromised the week before. They tried to walk off with my Visa when I went to pay. I insisted to see how they were going to use it. I wouldn't allow them to swipe my magnetic card on their computer as this is obviously how the other reviewer's credit card was compromised. They wanted me to use my BANK CARD on a chipped devise attached to the computer? by a cable. Highly suspect.
To pay I got cash at an ATM across the road and complained to the owner. This arrogant German hollered that I was not allowed to come back.
Which is just fine because I like my Caesar salad WITHOUT hair!
A huge dog on the patio barked through out the meal... couldn't even hold a conversation.
Run do not walk away.

Old Country Inn offers large portions for a decent price. You can order a plate and easily share between two people. The Schnitzel here is delicious!
I ordered the Holstein Schnitzel for something different. It came with a fried egg and anchovies on top. The egg yolk was not runny, which came as a bit of a disappointment to me. The overcooked egg had a slight rubbery texture. However, the eggy flavour went well with the schnitzel and the anchovy on top.

My mom's Cordon Bleu Schnitzel and my cousin's Jager Schnitzel were delectable too.
Their sauerkraut and red cabbage were super tasty.
The only problem was they apparently ran out of broccoli that day. The schnitzel is usually served with potatoes and vegetables with a cheese sauce. Instead of broccoli, they were going to serve cooked carrots. The server was honest and notified us of this beforehand. Thank goodness! She was super understanding and subbed the cooked carrots for sauerkraut instead.

For dessert, I ordered the Eiskaffee. Its practically the Austrian version of an Affogato. I was expecting this tiny little ramekin with a stingy scoop of ice cream and a shot of coffee but it came in a huge sundae glass with whipped cream on top. It was creamy and delicious. Eiskaffee was the perfect way to end a delightful meal.

Fair price for great, authenric European food, just like the ones I have had in Europe. Good portion. Nice environment. The beef liver is good and unique. Just a little too greasy.

The service was great and food came out very fast.

The food was surprisingly delicious and reasonably priced

The restaurants only downfalls are the decor and the fact that the average age of patrons is somewhere in the 80's

It's too bad because I would like to support this restaurant however the two times I have gone there. I have experienced terrible food, staff and most of all management. The manager/owner does not appreciate returning customers and is just rude period. I took a group of 11 people and all experienced the same thing. Family and friends have been informed to not go to this restaurant.

Horrible Service. Dont Give these People any Business. The service at this restaurant is absolutely abominable. I've been going there for years, because my grandmother enjoyed the "Old Country" environment and we wanted an authentic Schnitzel. However, when I recently went there their manager treated us like utter garbage. We came for a snack/dessert at 430 and were told that it's dinnertime and that we would have to order dinner. What kind of uncultured person expects one to sit down for dinner at 4:30pm. After we made it clear that we were leaving, the manager offered to have us sit in some other end of the restaurant. What kind of treatment is that? They told us their restaurant was fully booked when not a single table was taken at 4:30. Given that we were going for dessert, we would have been out of there within half-an-hour and they would be able to reset their tables before the next patrons would have arrived. Quite frankly I insisted that we leave and will never be setting foot in that restaurant again. We went to a great restaurant in Markham and had a good delicious dinner. Quite frankly the management at this place need to realize that this is Canada and not Austria, and you cannot treat clientele with such rudeness.

Recently had dinner with my wife at this establishment. Lovely exterior and has all the potential to create a wonderfully charming and romantic experience, but for the fact that the food was not pleasant, the decor outdated and the menu in serious need of an upgrade.

Our food was bland, boring, badly presented and expensive. We chose simple steak dinners that should have been a safe option. We were wrong. The steak was very tough and flavorless, the sauce presented was not in anyway made from fresh ingredients, the vegetables were completely overdone and soggy. The flavorless cheese sauce saturated the vegetables to such an extent it made a mess of the plate. In our opinion, this sort of food in a restaurant is not an acceptable standard and certainly not worth $27 a plate. Mediocre is not an acceptable standard at these sort of prices.

We thought that preservation of the Austrian elements was a very nice gesture but it is such pity that the food was not more flavoursome, fresh and better value. There is little point in taking the time and spending the money in going to a restaurant when you can make better food yourself at home. It defeats the purpose.

As a general comment, European food has should reflect more modern times. It is unnecessary to stalemate what should always be quality cuisine.

We can only hope that there will be an improvement to better reflect a well respected Austrian culture. Given our experience, I'm not sure we will bother going back to find out.

Great German Food. The service was excellent, staff was friendly and helpful with the food selection. I would definitely come back here for dinner again but only for a special an occassion as it is very expensives.

For the two of us, the bill came to $72.55 (includes tax but not the tip) for two appetizers, two entrees, soft drinks (they charge you full price for the refill) and one chocolate cake. They charged us for the extra mushroom gravy for the entree.
Urbanspoon should put $$ for this place.

Traditional menu at a good price for Unionville. I would stick to the Viennese items like schnitzel rather than the pasta, but overall we were pleased with our lunch there.

Meeting Place of Choice. We and two other couples meet here to dine at least once per year, partially because it's centrally located to our three homes and partially because the quality is so good.
Tonight a game menu supplemented the regular dinner menu, and I ordered the Venison French Chop with red cabbage and rice followed by coffee and Viennese chocolate cake. (The menu is more Austrian than German as listed.) The venison was tender and delectable, the red cabbage sweet but not overly so and garnished with three chives tied into a knot, and the rice primarily white but with some wild rice mixed in. The Viennese chocolate cake was a wedge of low, layered cake with a large dollop of real whipped cream on the side. No doubt about it, if you are visiting Unionville for its charming boutiques, this is an excellent place to dine. (What am I saying-we go to Unionville for The Country Inn, not for the boutiques.

Authentic!. Was very surprised by the authentic feel of this restaurant. The ambiance is just right for an Old Country Inn. A friend suggested the schnitzel and it was outstanding. Not greasy at all and just the way it was meant to be made. Dessert followed with Apple Strudel of course - fantastic! I will be back.

Old Country Inn Restaurant is located towards the end of the touristy strip of historic Unionville. The restaurant is run by family, serving authentic Austrian and German cuisine. The Old Country Inn is a century year old house built in 1872 by Dr. Eckardt, who was the grandson of the original settlers of Unionville. It was known as the Doctor’s House, having been home and office to a succession of medical practitioners. The Victorian style house is a bit dated and cute. It matches the German or Austrian background of the owner and menu. I thought the design was quite homey and warm. The interior decor is extremely dated. It looks like my living room, except more boring and dull. I think we were sitting in the greenhouse because there were windows and plants everywhere. I do enjoy staring at the colour green, as it does relax the ocular mus

Satya got the schnitzel sandwich, the chicken was super crispy and piping hot and the kaiser bun was crisp on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The only complaint was that the sandwich as a whole was kind of dry, it needed some sort sauce and our solution was putting some of the coleslaw in the sandwich it's self; it made it 10x yummier!
