Review Sima Sushi - Kingston

Michelle Beaudry
Ordered takeout for the first time from here, and we all agreed the food was AMAZING! Definitely highly recommend the Dynamite dragon, and the double torched spicy roll was out for this World, the Yam tempura roll was excellent!

Ordered for the first time (Uber eats delivery!) I’ve been on the hunt to find really good sushi. THIS IS IT. the pieces are BIG! i thought two rolls would tie me over but I just finished one and I’m stuffed! I got the dynamite & Philadelphia roll to test the waters and I am not disappointed. I will be ordering more! Since it was delivery I will add they added lots of wasabi and soya sauce (7 packets each!) and everything was tied securely to go in a plastic bag!

Ordered takeout from them tonight. The sashimi and nigiri taste fresh. Ikura (salmon roe) is always my fav. Undoubtedly the best sushi house in Kingston.

Hands down, the best sushi in downtown kingston. The portions are very generous. The rolls are always consistent and delicious. It’s my Friday evening take out weekly.

Hands down the best sushi (in my opinion) in Kingston. Amazing service, fresh product, and always a consistent and enjoyable experience. Always my go to when I need a sushi fix.

Friendly staff, good service and nicely decorated. Salmon teriyaki very tasteful, salmon was juicy and very smooth. Delicious! Sake roll on the menu mentions only salmon, but it's actually prepared with cucumber+salmon. If you want the roll prepared only with salmon, double-check with the server before ordering it. Good place for sushi, sashimi, rolls and teriyaki. :)

Overrated! I've heard this is the best sushi restaurant in Kingston and it did not live up to the hype. The spicy Salmon is mediocre at best. The California roll had minimal avocado and Kani, mainly cucumber. Unlikely I will go back

If you are looking for vegan sushi in Kingston, go here!! Their pink flower roll is my favourite, it is the most flavourful and delicious sushi I have ever tried. It is made with yam, beet, asparagus, avocado, and cucumber in pink rice paper! Definitely a highlight on the menu. Their avo-Q roll, shiitake mushroom roll, and miso soup are other favourites of mine. Also, the mugs they put green tea in are so adorable! Great place.

Had dinner there last night! The service was great and the owners came over and introduced themselves as well as very personable staff! Amazing Sushi, I highly recommend this restaurant!

In this University town of Kingston, discovered this amazing sushi place... the place is very cozy and friendly. The sushi rolls are out of this world. If you are looking for having sushi rolls and some sashimi, you have to visit this place.

Best sushi in Kingston. Friendly delivery guy. Accommodating for changes in order (Thank you) and presentation and portions are appealing as well as tasty. I've learned my lesson from ordering at other places like Kame.

Great place for Sushi. I was missing my Vancouver Sushi until I found Sima Sushi. Feeling very grateful in my home town.

Only good feedback for Sima! Definitely the best sushi in Kingston, it's always fresh and the serving sizes are generous. The restaurant itself has a lovely dine-in atmosphere. The service is always fast (especially on take-out!) It's also fun to watch them make your roll if you get a seat near the kitchen. Sima has a huge, creative menu! We love the mango roll and k-rock roll

Beautiful rolls are among the best in the city!!!

Lovely, quaint restaurant. This sushi is Delish! The rolls are massive, all fresh! I love watching them prepare the rolls right infront of me. Such an art! We eat there everytime we stay overnight in Kingston, & we're never disappointed!

Wow! Who knew that you could get such good INEXPENSIVE sushi in Kingston, AND get such terrific service to boot!

Despite a full house on a Saturday night, we were seated in a few minutes. The waitress and everyone else who served us - including the maitre d' - were friendly, attentive and very competent (a step or two above most of the other servers we've had in Kingston). They were also really fast, despite the restaurant being packed and the take-out orders that kept coming in.

Our sushi exceeded our expectations. My husband's "chef's deluxe special" was so large he almost didn't finish it. It was only $18! I enjoyed a gorgeous and tasty vegetarian dish called "Pink Flowers". My green tea was free, and they kept refilling my tea cup. Our bill was only $40.51 w/o tip. Needless to say, I tipped them well.

This place is a real gem!

One of my favourite places for sushi by far! Everything is fresh and delicious and the portion sizes are great. The location is small for eating in the restaurant but if you can, choose a table near the window for more space. Take out won't disappoint either!

It's a really pretty restaurant and it's super packed.
I've been hearing SO MANY positive things about that place. Perhaps my expectations were too high. But it wasn't too true to it's reputation.
The prices were too expensive for it's size.
I liked the waiters there. The outfits were adorable!
Overall, a good restaurant but overpriced/hyped.

We found this place on Zomato, it appears to be popular and have high review ratings on other platforms. I would say this rating on Zomato is most accurate. The location is the best thing about this restaurant. Located in the beautiful Kingston princess st near the lake. The place is really busy. We are in a hurry so we actually called in to ask if it is busy and whether two ppl arrive in 20 mins. Yea, I heard loud background noises over the phone...I shouldn't trust what they told me, which I found out it's a lie 20 mins later myself :/ The service is also quite slow, we waited over 30 mins after we made our order, not to mention we waited quite sometime and have to ask menu ourselves. I There is fly accompany us during the entire dinner...We ordered four popular maki specials, love love salmon and cannot remember the names of others (torched salmon, scallop, unagi). The presentation is nice. But the tastes are just ok, definitely tailored for North Americans rather than authentic...nothing authentic actually. There is BBQ sauce on two of the rolls. All rolls contains A LOT of cucumbers, we felt like we ate 3 cucumbers for 4 rolls...pretty cooling...the worst part is the poor quality of the salmon, terrible consider the price tag, it is quite fishy tasting even after all the sauce, spicy oil and torching... I am from Toronto so this may not be fair for ppl at Kingston, but I would recommend going elsewhere.

It is sometimes with a heavy heart that you write some reviews and that can be said of this article. It is the last one of the year, a closure of sorts for me and a renewal for the year ahead. As I have mentioned before our experiences in life are sometimes affected by our head space at the moment. Our adventures eating out can go two ways. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the restaurants we frequent, but the people we are with, the ambiance, the conversations that ensue and our mood at the moment.

Fresh sushi, amazing quality and reasonable prices! Service is on point even if is packed!!
This is my go to sushi restaurant in Kingston!!!
Nicole McIntosh
The sushi is very fresh and the quantity you get for the price is fantastic, you get good service for a small restaurant!
This is our go-to sushi restaurant in Kingston!

Sima
Sushi is a busy place and they are always line ups outside the door. This was
the case this evening and without reservations, it can be a wait. We gave our
name and went for a walk up Princess Street to revisit some of the boutiques
and novelty shops I had visited on my last time here three years ago. After Clergy St. Not much was to be seen and
we headed back to Sima Sushi as our table was ready. The hospitality and
service at Sima Sushi is like no other. Our waitress Mina was exceptional; she
helped us with our choices and made great suggestions. Her contagious smile and
sweet voice, unwavering politeness brought back belief that humanity is good
and there are still good people out there. The decor at Sima Sushi is
unpretentious and casual, a small place seating 28 people, it is easy on the eyes
with opposing burnt red walls and exposed brown grey brick wall. At the back
long sushi counter where the sushi chefs create their art. Typical of many
sushi restaurants, with the exception of the wood tables, chairs and floor
giving it a country rustic feeling. We started our meal with a Sapporo beer -$4.95
and lychee juice-$ 2.75. A good start
for a warm day .Brains started with ordering the Sushi Dinner-A at $ 13.95,
which consisted of Miso Soup and a Green Salad with Yuzu dressing and 6 pieces
of sushi and 6 California rolls. I can’t say much about food presentation, the
salad portion was not generous it consisted of two carrot rounds, three lettuce
leaves and a half slice of tomatoes and cucumber, with a dollop of yuzu
dressing, shaken not stirred .But then it was a teaser to the start of the
meal, and probably meant to be that way, I believe it would have been better
served alongside the sushi to compliment the
sushi and sashimi which were super fresh. It came served on a simple
white plate with no accoutrements; no wasabi, no sliced marinated ginger.
Nonetheless, Brains was pleased.I ordered of course the Rock Star-$ 10.95 which
consisted of 8 pieces of Shrimp tempura, spicy salmon, avocado, and cucumber and
fish egg. This was a great palate pleaser and very fresh as well, it made I
feel like a Rock Star and the staff made us feel really special. I am the
proverbial Rock Star mom (to a few) although lately I don’t feel like that but
I must say this dish boosted my ego and my mood for a moment. I forgot the
present and thought of my past accomplishments. So uplifting, I thought, that
some food & good words can have this effect.SIMA Sushi focus is on “simple foundations of
quality ingredients, exciting dishes, at fair prices” They hit the mark with
their assortment of sushi, sashimi, rolls and cooked Japanese dishes, a warm
locale and great service. Three years in and they are still going strong; the
line ups are long and the food consistent.
A must try for any sushi lover when in Kingston and locals alike. We
left with a good feeling and energy to walk around the waterfront contemplating
life in Kingston. So easy we thought, this small town life with no stress is so
soothing for the soul and the morale. Albeit a heavy heart this was a real moment
to cherish and a new good memory to add to my book of pleasant adventures.

It's definitely one of the better restaurants for sushi! But it's also one of the pricier restaurants too. They are usually busy around dinner time so I recommend reserving a table or just going a bit early!

Also, if you are going for lunch, I highly recommend getting the Sima Lunch Set. It's a great value for your dollar!!

I have been here a few times and always love it. The sushi is fresh and they have some unique maki rolls. I had the salmon love love roll which was uber tasty- though very large and each piece was worthy of two bites!
Foodie4Life
Good quality sushi in Kingston, but very overpriced compared to sushi in the rest of the country. Spicy salmon salad is delicious with a good amount of salmon piled on top!

Probably the best place to get sushi in Kingston. The food is great and it's decently priced, so I always try to come by when I crave sushi (which is almost always). They are very generous with the size of their sashimi, as well as the pieces of fish on the nigiri.

Rolls are pretty standard, but I don't usually come here for the rolls. Although when I do, I like the torched rolls they have, but I find that their torching is very inconsistent - sometimes it's torched to perfection, sometimes it's barely torched.

Another complaint would be ordering things I would imagine people don't normally order. I like hamachi a lot, and sometimes when I order it, it tastes a little bit fishy and not fresh. So this was a real hit or miss.

But overall, I can't think of another place that's better than Sima in Kingston.

Best of a very weak bunch. Most 'sushi' in Kingston (and let's face it, all over Canada and the USA) is pretty awful if you are expecting actual Japanese sushi. What in Japan is a subtle, fresh delight, all about texture and the taste of the sea, has been transformed in most North American cities into a way of stuffing your face with cheap carbohydrates, farmed salmon, fat avocado and deep-fried things (deep-frying has no place anywhere near sushi!). Above all, the rice (which is what 'sushi' means - it's not about the fish) is just crap and tastes nothing like sushi should taste. Almost all the restaurants in Kingston are run by Korean-Canadians, and I sometimes wish they'd concentrate on cooking their own wonderful, rich, spicy Korean food that would make the dismal Ontario winters more bearable rather than messing up the cuisine of their near cultural neighbours.

Having said that, Sima is okay. The staff are nice and good with kids, and it's conveniently located. Of all Kingston's ersatz-sushi places, it's the only one I'd go to on a regular basis. There's no point in my reviewing any of the rest because they are uniformally terrible but, at the same time, almost all of them are what people here expect sushi places to be - so good luck to them. They don't need me writing the same criticism everywhere.
Totally Korean
There are a lot of Japanese restaurant in Kingston, but many of my experiences in them weren't very impressive. This has been the best so far, although only thing I have gotten so far is SIMA lunch special. I shall try more. The place is clean, simple, good fish, only complain is the place is bit tight.

Excellent quality.. Wow! Why don't they have sushi like this in Ottawa? Sima puts every other place I've been lately to shame, and I wish I lived closer to Kingston so I could get take out from here more often.

They don't overload the sushi with rice and you get nice cuts and portions of fish. Very fresh taste. Presentation was appealing. Would return any time.

Liked it, overall very good

Best Sushi in Kingston. I love sushi, and I've tried many of the restaurants here, but keep coming back to Sima. It is by far the best available. Well made, good portions, and great service! I have never been disappointed!

First time I have tried Sima Sushi. First thing you notice great service. Fresh tasting as I would expect in Kingston. In other words everything tasted frozen except the salmon. The RockStar Roll I had was pretty good. I also had some sashimi:
Butterfish, Tuna, Salmon

Price was reasonable, service was outstanding. Sake was Hot.

I would come back.
FoodieAnna
Top quality. If you place emphasis on quality and creativity of sushi, this is your place. The size and quality of the roll far exceeds other sushi places I have tried.

The restaurant is also nice and small inside. Always busy, a good sign.

This is our favourite sushi restaurant! It sucks we're no longer in Kingston. We've even considered making the two hour commute from Ottawa for this place since we can't find good sushi nearby. Everything on the menu is awesome, especially the pink flower roll. The ingredients are fresh and the service is always outstanding. The ambience is also inviting. Get a table near the window for the best experience.

Service was great, waitress was always available and great at keeping our drinks full. They have some great 6 piece maki dishes for about $5 and some larger rolls around $10-12. Ingredients were super fresh and tasty. Definitely worth checking out.

My all time favourite sushi-mowing spot in Kingston. Yes, the place is small - but the food is top quality, the prices are totally respectable, the service is always amazing and the owners are super friendly. I have never once been remotely disappointed when it comes to Sima. Great, great sushi. Check it out.

Best sushi in Kingston (IMO). Sushi is always fresh and nicely presented. Great service and reasonably priced.

Gluten-free available!!. This courteous and efficient restaurant serves delicious and fresh sushi. No need to bring your own gluten-free soya sauce. They have it!

-----20 Nov, 2012-----

Gluten-free available!!. This restaurant is wonderful for people looking for a gluten free meal. They even have gluten free soya sauce available and are knowledgeable about their menu. The food is always fresh and delicious and promptly served. A very pleasant dining experience - for lunch or supper.

Great service, amazing food!. I'm a vegetarian who loves sushi, so finding a place that has more choice than an avocado/cucumber roll really made me happy! They have a great choice and very creative rolls. Their service is excellent, even when their small dining room is packed. The only negative thing I could say is that they are unfortunately closed on Tuesdays, but I hope some day that will change!

Great Place!. Based on the reviews of this place, we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is really small, probably only about 10 small tables. The servers are very kind and attentive. It was a tad confusing as we had about three different servers throughout our lunch. The sushi chefs were not very kind, they seemed a bit put out, as if they didn't enjoy where they were. The seaweed salad and miso soup are amazing! I loved the way they decorated the plate for the seaweed salad, very cute! The sushi was really good, it came out quickly and it tasted delicious. I highly recommend the K-Rock roll, it is deep-fried to perfection! The only thing is that the K-Rock roll is about $12.95, but for eight pieces, it isn't too bad. Our total came out to $83 for four people, a tad pricey but, we polished all of the sushi, it was that good! I highly recommend this place, not only is the food good, the servers are very kind. Awesome sushi!

Very good sushi and very attentive staff. I also loved the atmosphere. Highly recommended for a place to go with a couple of friends or family. Also the declaration of the resturant is superb.

Amazing. I have lived in Kingston for 8 years and have tried all the Japanese restaurants in Kingston, both current and others that have since closed. Sima Sushi is one of the best this city has offered in Japanese food. Fresh and each piece of sushi attentively positioned, I can always count on quality. The portions are pretty decent too and service is great. They always make sure that you are okay and have enough water/tea etc.

Very impressed!. I was very impressed by the maki rolls at this restaurant. I love japanese food but I don't eat the sashimi or anything raw. That being said, I can only comment on the maki! The special rolls were SO good! Very fresh, and though the price at first might appear high, the rolls ae HUGE so you get your money's worth in my opinion. I ordered two rolls and could have done with just one. They use jumbo shrimp in the tempura rolls not like some places that use smaller ones.
I would definitely recommend this if you are in town and if I ever return to Kingston I will come here again!
Kristen
Absolutely the best sushi in town. Always fresh.
Y And M
Not just another sushi place. Definitely a step up from the other places in town - better fish and better rolls. However don't come here if you are in a rush as it gets busy and as a result food can take a long time to come. The rolls are worth the wait, significantly better than the rest of the competition.

For anyone who was badly spoilt by the prominent Japanese food scenes in Hong Kong, they should come visit Sima Sushi in Kingston (only if you happened to study in Queen’s University or travelled to Kingston of course!) The regular sashimi platter does not disappoint at all! I opted for salmon sashimi only as I LOVE salmon A LOT… The sashimi was thickly sliced and the taste of the salmon was fresh and yummy! It is so difficult to find an authentic Japanese restaurant serving fresh sashimi in Canada, the ones you normally get are California roll or all sorts of rolls that were influenced heavily by the Western Culture. By that, I mean there is literally no raw fish at all in those so-called rolls. Hence, this hidden gem is truly a comfort to satisfy my sashimi craving! Torched Salmon California Roll Besides sashimi and nigiri, Sima also serve a wide selection of rolls inspired by the Americans. I like this roll as the salmon was nicely fired by the heat gun, leaving it slightly cooked o

To start we had some deep fried dumplings. They were excellent. Then we shared some yam sushi, avocado salmon sushi and salmon nigiri. They were all good. I’m a particular fan of yam. For sushi, there is no equal to match Sima. Kingston is littered with run-of-the-mill Japanese food to cater to a strangely Japanophile market that is the undergraduate student. There’s the Sodexo variety which I was told buys unsold fish from Loblaw, the molasses-slow all-you-can-eat Sakura, the Justin Bieber pumping Niji or the sketchy ghetto-esque Sushi-Q. Sima is modest in size (36-seats) and modest in price. The sashimi lunch and dynamite rolls are probably the best snack

Kingston is a cute little town, but honestly there's not much to do, especially on a snowy weekend. Mona and I recently went to visit Alexa for a weekend and, in the absen ce of activities, w e ended up eating all the time! I swear, t here was not a moment during those two days that I felt hungry! We started the day at Tommy's, a 24-h our retro-style diner for a delicious greasy breakfast ! Every university is in need of a place like this! Mona's G uinness pulled pork omelette ($8.99) , served with toast and home fries. Alexa's breakfast quesadilla ( $7.99)

I don't know why there are so many Korean sushi places in Kingston. I don't think there is a single Japanese sushi place. They are all Korean run! Usually, I can tell based upon the menu (the presence of Kimchi, dduk dyuk, and bulgogi is a giveaway) but s
