Been coming here since it was the SkyDragon café. Played my first open mic here in probably 2008 or 2009, and have been playing around 5 shows a year here for the past 3 or 4 years. The vibe is consistently amazing. Food and drinks are consistently amazing, as well. The soundmen they employ (particularly Thor) are top-notch people and always do immaculate work.
What I think I love most are the people. The staff are always so kind, and not only that, the establishment attracts all sorts of great people. I've met so many excellent people who've worked there, and I've become good friends with other regulars who've played there. Anyone on King William could open a venue, that's the type of area that it is. But not just any venue can make you feel like you're home, and that's where Homegrown flourishes.
Had the pleasure of performing here with The Vaudvillains' monthly variety show: the acts, the staff, the crowd, everyone was on the same page. Great energy all around. Highly infectious.
Homegrown hamilton. Homegrown is a great space and it truly chances hamilton. Their coffee is the best roasted coffee in hamilton (Better then detour). Although they are not a full service restaurant, They are a great coffeeshop, Great bar, and it's a place to go for a sense of community. Mike (the owner) loves working behind the bar and you can see his passion and fantastic customer service. There is no "wannabe hipsters" at homegrown, there is simply just friendly people. I'm a current culinary student and i'm very impressed with the chef's cooking, I'm an avid coffee lover and Homegrown is #1 roasted beans (Red hill being #2) The only reason you'd ever find me at detour is for a shot of punch buggy (just because it is around the corner from my house, and it's half decent) Homegrown is my person favorite place to be in hamilton. (Mezza in ancaster will still make a better latte)
Vegan/vegetarian/artist-friendly. Never been to Homegrown? You're missing out. Especially if you're into vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and organic food. Did I mention they have a stage for music, spoken-word poetry and presentations? Or what about the fact that they only serve their coffee, tea and water after it has gone through a 4-step reverse osmosis water treatment? This place is 'the bomb.'
It's a very laid-back artsy atmosphere. One could call it a hippy haven. (Shh! Don't tell the Starbucks wanna-be hipsters!)
Like a good veggie burger? They have the absolute BEST organic veggie burgers. (Vegan!) Made in-house from scratch. I think they even make their own ketchup. It's always a bit different each time I try it, but very filling. I make sure to ask for extra toppings and for it to be extra saw-say. Sometimes it has sautéed onions. Sometimes it has an awesome home-made garlic sauce on it. Sometimes it's so good that I cry a bit inside. Comes with baked potato chips on the side.
Their desserts are mainly organic, often vegan and sometimes gluten-free. I believe there are a few raw desserts sometimes, too. The chef is always whipping up new creations. I am in love with their almond power bar. Must try.
I can't say enough good stuff about this place. But if you want a cool place to relax, get a coffee, a veggie burger ,some vegan treats, take someone on a date, book a music performance, work on your sketches or writing... Homegrown is where you want to go. But don't tell too many people or it will soon be an overflow of hipster teenagers who feel they are superior to you hogging all the tables. It's that cool.
Great variety!. Great atmosphere downtown with fresh food. Great for breakfast and lunch. Good music and drinks at night!
One of the best cafes in Hamilton!. Homegrown has great food and drinks (very vegan friendly!) A comfortable place to relax with a book or sit over a delicious sandwich, burger, chilli, soup, or salad and study. I have always been treated well; even without really knowing anyone there, I always get polite smiles and feel welcome.
