Review China Town Restaurant - Halifax

ゴルフ
Revised my review; Food: Best Dim Sum Restuarant in Halifax so far. Good portion and authentic Chinese Hong Kong style. Recommend to try steamed chicken feet, deep fry taro (you need to ask for plum sauce), pork dumpling, fried noodle with sticky soup, Stewed beef brisket and BBQ duck. Service: Improving a lot after my 1st review. In order to get your order faster, recommend to come to Restuarant earlier.

Enjoy the dim sum and yum cha during weekends! The dim sum and tea may not be so impressive but the ambience is good and cozy. It may be a good choice if you would like to taste chinese food with friends and family.

Not like the original Chaintown on the basin, which had gone downhill when managment changed. They're tried to bring in different Asian or Indian foods. Now new location, management/owners, almost as good as original. Had the meat egg rolls with homemade plum sauce, whole crispy barbecued duck, pork fooyoung, and Chinatown fried rice. Delicious! Ordered for 5:30 pickup. On time.

Lots of great food. Great serviceWe we’re there for an early supper. Terrific value for the money.

We used to dine in at the old place but just rather take out. The food is still hot when we get home. Love the food. Staff is polite and very friendly. We've been coming here since they opened up over 30 years ago. No complaints at all.

I order from here regularly and always find the food fresh and hot. The only issue I have is I always order and extra egg roll to go with the combination, but i always seem to get a spring roll instead. They spring rolls are good, but not what I'm asking for.

Dinner was fantastic. Food was hot and tasty and the staff friendly. Made excellent recommendations. Prices are reasonable also. So happy I decided to go while visiting Halifax. Will be back and so will my friend.

Food and portions were excellent. The beer was also reasonably priced. Good physical distancing, good service. The pan fried dumplings were good as were the spring rolls. Lemon Chicken was delicious. My biggest complaint here is the lack of atmosphere. The place is deceptively huge and once in, it's like banquet hall. Huge and impersonal. Thankfully the food is very good.

My parents love this place, we come here for dim sum, food is usually pretty fast, service could be better (wait staff always rushing around hard to flag them down) shrimp dumplings are a family favorite, same with egg tart, rice rolls, salty egg yolk sesame balls. Occasionally receive some over steamed shrimp dumplings that fall apart. But overall would go again

Went here for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and had Dim Sum. It was delicious! There was no wait to get in, and the food came within a reasonable amount of time. It is definitely worth the drive over the bridge!

The worst take-out experience ever. I called to place my order like 20 mins ahead. I was told it takes about 30 mins. That's fine. We arrived, and were told that only one chef was working, it might take longer time. That's fine for us.There were other two ladies waiting for their orders. One was before us, and another was later. Like 5 mins later, a gentleman came in and ordered take-out. We waited patiently as we could tell the restaurant was busy. The two ladies left one by one. We were waiting for 20 mins, I asked the server how long did we have to wait. If it's long, I could take my kids back home and come back for pick up. I was told 5 more mins. However, about another half hour, the gentleman's order was ready. I asked the server about my order again. I said the gentle was in later than us, and I called before came in. She went into the kitchen and the owner came out with my order. The owner asked me if I yelled at her staff, as she cried. I did not yell at the server, I just told her this is not right. I was pissed, but I still talked calmly. The owner said it's because I ordered Chinese food for Chinese, not the Chinese food for Canadian. Yes, I am Chinese, so I ordered food for a Chinese restaurant. My order was not complicated. It was fried rice, fried noodle and a vegi. I was not expected that my order would be prepared priority, but I did expect my order was prepared by order. I did not want to bring us skin colour or nation, but it is so ridiculous. The last words she said it is okay that you are not coming back. Okay, I will never go again. I just shared my experience.

Memorable. Driving through the tunnel to get to this iconic restaurant on the Bedford Basin holds a special place in my heart. The service can be bumpy and the take out can be hit or miss (usually depending on how far you're driving) but besides that, the food dining in is awesome. The menu mostly focuses on Canadian Chinese; One of my all time favorites here are the egg rolls though. They make them in the HRM local "meat-pate filling" style (the meat and veggies are pretty much turned into a delicious pate) that I haven't seen anywhere else in Canada and I adore and miss them. The traditionally authentic Chinese dishes they make are usually stellar.

It's definitely worth checking out!

Not happy. I have come here several times with my parents for lunch and we tend to show up when they open at 11am. Every single time when we went there it was cold and dark inside. Did the staff forget how to turn on lights? I had to go to the washroom one time and I literally had to feel along the wall in pitch black to find the light switch. The staff is unattentive and the food average. Be more prepared at the time of opening!

Disappointed. We went to Chinatown for my young son's birthday on Tuesday night (Oct. 16/12) for dim sum. We were seated, water and tea were brought to the table, and then we waited for 45 minutes for food and not one dish was brought out. There was no acknowledgement by the waitresses at all re: wait time or any sort of conversation with us. It was not so busy at the restaurant. We did not even have place settings on the table. The waitresses that night lacked customer service skills big time. When I asked the waitress to check on our food order, she went into the kitchen and never came back to our table to let us know what was taking so long. We were getting short on patience and was upset as it was my son's birthday celebration. It was really poor service. We usually come for dim sum on the weekend and the service is good and the food usually comes out pretty fast. So I do not know what happened. I am so very disappointed. I tried to write feedback on their website, by that link did not work. Go figure.

Great Food. My wife and I have been going to this restaurant, on weekends for Dim Sum, for about 5 years now. We have been there at least 2 dozen times and the food is always fresh and the service is friendly and fast. Don't be shy about Dim Sum folks. The servers will help explain the selections to you and we would recommend you be a little adventurous. Soul mate and I try to select one thing new every time we go. Their sticky rice is always our first choice and the cost is amazing considering the amount of preparation time we imagine it takes. We do highly recommend this place.

Used to be great. I used to go here fairly regularly when I lived in Halifax, and the food was great then. We visited there in Dec. 2010 and we went for some takeout to bring back to our hotel. Food was SUPER SUPER greasy and tasted like whatever oil they cooked the food in was very old also.

Used to be a great restaurant until new owners let it go.

Excellent. Went there with my family last night for an early Chinese new year dinner. It was authentic, and with the addition of seafood, it was definitely on par or better than other restaurants I have visited in Calgary and Vancouver.

Vegetables were cooked to just crisp, and the crispy chicken was crispy while still tender. Lobster and haddock tasted fresh. Had red bean soup with sesame dumplings for dessert. Yum!

If you're looking for authentic Chinese (and can order off the Chinese menu) this is the place to go.
