Review Shiraz - Halifax

Pierre Bourbonnais
Small place with BIG flavor. The soup and the curry chicken served with some rice was really delicious. My wife took the Combo which was also delicious. We will go back before going back home. There is only 3 tables, so if you go at lunch time it might be busy.

My best food experience in Halifax! Kebob’s were perfect, very delicious, and tasty! Salad Shirazi was spectacular and nostalgic for me! Don’t forget to have a tea after the main course! Owners were so friendly and sweet! They make you feel like home! Interior is very cozy, warm, and nostalgic!

If you like Persian cuisine, this is the place to go. The restaurant is cozy with limited space, but with so much personality and warmth. The owner lady was so sweet and nice. We loved our tasty meals. We would definitely go back in our short stay in Halifax.

Authentic Persian food in Halifax. We got the Shirazi Combo, the lamb wrap, and the Choopan Yogurt Soda Drink. The Shirazi Combo was delicious and featured fluffy rice, chunks of chicken, and a long piece of beef/lamb meat. The Choopan Yogurt Drink was an interesting try as it was essentially carbonated yogurt. Not at all like Milkis or Calpis, similar drinks in Eastern Asia. I would not recommend getting the wrap though as although the portion size was huge and perfect for eating outdoors, the taste was bland. Would definitely go back and eat in and try the other items on the menu.

The best place to eat tasty iranian food. Very cozy and nostalgic decoration. Warm and kind host, Zahra khanum makes you remember your aunt. The best rice, I've tried in Canada,so fluffy and good looking, delicious Kebab, Shirazi Salad and Dough. The best food in one week vacation for all 9 people in the group. My children finished their food with appetite and they insisted me to put this review as they can no longer make the compliments of their favorite fast food. I wish I were living in Halifax to go there at least once a week. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. Definitely come back there in future. Thank you Zahra khanoom , wish you health and prosperous business.

This is a true gem of Halafax! There is absolutely some of the best food I have ever had! My wife had the chicken and lamb kabob, while I decided to try something I had never heard of before. Finding a stew of chicken in pomegranate and walnuts called Fesenjoon (TRY IT!!) I was absolutely blown away. A sweetness that did not overpower and which tinged on tart, a savoryness without being salty, and a velvety sauce. I need more of this in my life! This was followed by a desert of a saffron and pistachio ice cream sandwich which was a thing of beauty itself. It is a small place, but they have big flavor and big hearts! Make time to try this!

A perfect Persian meal. The kobedeh, and the sabzi were to die for. Highly recommended and Authentic, and the staff is very friendly

Super delicious kebab combo - the rice was also amazing. Charming, ambient little Syrian restaurant that should be on the back of anyone’s mind for when they get tired of eating seafood all the time.

Tiny place, excellent food. I look forward to a return visit.

First time come and this restaurant is very close to me and friends’ home. Every time I passed want to have a try. And food all good. My friend liked the sauce in the meal.

Tried it. Passed by many times, and wanted to try this place. Ordered from there this past weekend and was so very disappointed. Perhaps I'm just not a lover of Persian Cuisine. The rice and chicken tasted awful, sadly we tossed it. Did have a samosa, which wasn't bad...but no sauce to accompany it. Not likely to try this restaurant again

84%?!?!. I went to this sketchy little place based on the reviews given on this forum. From the outside, it is THE most sketchy place I had ever been, but, I had an open mind and my friend and I got some food. She got the Joojeh Kebob and I got the Fesenjoon. Both were AWFUL! The rice was bland and flavourless and both her chicken and my stew(?) tasted medicinal. The Fesenjoon was better than the Joojeh Kebob, but not by much. The samosa was also not "amazing". And the kicker, it's not that cheap! For take out for this stew and a bottle of water, it costed nearly 17.00! Do yourself a favour: save your money and eat somewhere else. The only and I mean ONLY reason to eat here, ever, is the owners who are both very nice and friendly.

Fesenjoon good, xlnt. You.... Fesenjoon good, samosas xlnt. You can buy the hot sauce to take home! Friendliness only reason to eat in outside of patio season, but it is notable, and endearing...

A Halifax treasure. Shiraz is a Halifax treasure! Unfortunately metro is pretty poor in terms of authentic ethnic restaurants. Shiraz is one of the exceptions. Located in a tiny building on Hollis Street, between Morris Street and Terminal Road, Shiraz can accommodate approximately ten dine-in customers at a time. Once you enter you feel like you're in a different world, almost everybody speaks Farsi, the owner couple is busy preparing food and chatting with patrons, there is colourful Persian art on the wall and Persian groceries are offered for sale. The menu is short, main course combos range from $9.99 to $18.99, with the median price being $12.99 (all prices as of February 2010). They also have wraps for $7.99 and various appetizers and sides. My favourite so far is joojeh kebob which in the menu is being described as "two skewers of tender marinated chicken thighs served with basmati saffron rice and charbroiled tomatoes" ($12.99). The rice is good, but what is really amazing is the chicken. Stellar. Shiraz is open Mon-Sun 11am-9pm (again as of February 2010) and they also do take-out (of course) and delivery. There is, in my opinion, only one downside to Shiraz: it is probably 25% more expensive than a comparable restaurant in Toronto. Halifax restaurants remain quite pricey compared to other Canadian cities, which is a pity. Apart from that Shiraz is fantastic. Support it or otherwise it may be gone eventually!

We tend to eat here nearly every time we make a trip to Halifax. The prices are very reasonable, and the owners are quite friendly. The samosas are delicious, and the havij pollo (basmati rice, chicken, carrots and saffron) is incredible. If you've not tried Shiraz, you definitely ought to consider eating there.
