Review 9 + Nine Chinese Cuisine - Halifax

Cindy Hum
Food was delicious overall with huge portions. I personally recommend the curry chicken! It was flavourful and with a slight kick - one of the best I’ve tried from any Chinese restaurant. I found the beef noodle soup (紅燒牛肉麵) a little too bland but after adding some chili oil it was better. Every dish we ordered had a generous portion of protein. Food came out quickly after ordering.

9 + Nine Chinese Restaurant in Halifax isn't just good, it's mind-blowingly amazing! It's like a flavor party where the clams in black bean sauce are the life of the party – perfectly cooked with a sauce that's the right kind of spicy. The crispy shrimp wontons? More like little pockets of heaven with a crunch that sings. And let's talk about that fried rice – it's like every grain is dancing in a rich, umami ballet. But the real showstopper? The sweet and sour chicken. It's so unreal, it'll make you question every sweet and sour chicken you've had before. Fresh ingredients, authentic tastes, and a vibe that's just as awesome as the food. If you're in Halifax and craving Chinese, 9 + Nine is the place to be. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!

We ordered the Shanghai Style Fried Noodles and the Chicken and Snow Peas. Both very good! We also had one of each egg roll (curry & plain - not pictured); personally I prefer the version with curry. The server was very kind and accommodating.

NOT SPONSORED!! If you are tired of simply steamed or boiled seafood, come here for their secret menu (need to book in advanced). The chef is from Hong Kong, and cooks authentic Cantonese dishes. Yet, the owner, coming from Shandong province, has brought plenty of influence to the overall cooking. This is your one-stop chinese food exploration. The menu offers Sichuan style "numbing pepper" hot plates; well balanced Cantonese cuisine; rare but filling and satisfying northern flavors. And yes, Dim sum is only a part of Cantonese food. People working in the kitchen and on the floor are super friendly: they constantly check in with you, tell you some fun stories behind the dishes. I know it's "just" a diner. It's always full, constant calls and Uber eat orders. If you truly want the most authentic cultural experience and atmosphere, this is THE PLACE to go.

Lobster is superb! They use fresh lobsters and cook it very nicely. Duck is tasty too. There was one time that the duck skin is not crispy:(, but other than that, it’s been good.

My wife and I walked out both thinking the same thing. That was the best Chinese food that we've ever had in the city. Fresh, excellent portion size and, yummy, at a reasonable price. Just down the street from where we live and it was out first visit here. We'll definitely be back.

I've eaten here dozens of times over the last several years, usually with the same friend who originally recommended it for their Ginger Beef, which is excellent All dishes are fresh, good quality ingredients with lots of flavor and cooked consistently well. The dinner for 1 with sweet & sour chicken, mixed veg & rice is a popular choice and very good. Their pork & veg boiled dumplings are decent. There is seating altogether for maybe 30? Several basic four-seater tables and a couple of round six-seater tables, ideal to share dishes. Reminder that the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. Friendly service and never too long of a wait. FYI I had done a prior satisfied review that doesn't seem to exist anymore on here, so this is a short summary of my basic experiences.

They had specials only. We ordered the chicken and rice and the beef noodles. Both of them were great. The noodles were a bit dry, but other than that, good food

Well-balanced used spices such that they do not overpower, rather enhance the flavor of the main ingredients. Casual atmosphere and friendly owner.

It hits the spot if you're craving Chinese food that doesn't taste like an excuse for Chinese food. Best to go with groups as it gives you a better experience, make sure to share.

This is the best place I can have the Hong Kong style Chinese food in Halifax.

Food was really good. However, prices were not reflected accurately on the menu, hence the one drop star. For example, half BBQ duck is no longer $21 per menu, but $28 instead per owner. Also, we saw a table ordered fish so we asked but they didn’t have fish anymore. Turns out the other table know the owner and they told other customers that they just came in and ask the owner to serve anything they would. Therefore, If you were to order market price item better call ahead. Lastly, they seem to have irregular hours so again call them ahead before heading over.

Fresh crunchy vegetables, crispy ginger beef, and great service.

This is a wonderful restaurant which has authentic Shandong roasted fish. The restaurant will sell you the whole fish choosing size depends on how many people will taste it. It's convenient to reserve a big delicious fish with family in the morning, and pick it up after the trip when you guys are exhausted and hungry. In addition, there is a nearby lake called: "Belchers Marsh Lake", where is a surrounding trail. It's fun to walk around the lake while you are waiting for the first if you didn't do the reservation. Overall, I really enjoyed the authentic Shandong roasted fish and the trail nearby.

Usually, we don't order dishes from the menu. We just tell them how many people we have, so they will design special dishes for us.

I'm glad they offer Real Chinese Food.

Our favorite place for Chinese Food. We order out from, or dine in at 9 plus Nine regularly and have never been disappointed. The food is delicious ( our favorite is the Ginger Beef). Song- the woman who is the hostess/waitress, is friendly and efficient. The restaurant is a very popular place and is always busy-another indication of the great food they serve.

Excellent food and great service with a smile. We've been here a number of times in recent months and just keep enjoying it more and more. We've ordered from the menu twice and also enjoyed the chef's specialties on Saturdays. The soups are great and I very much like the squid . Terrific noodles and nice spice - not fancy, but highly recommend for authentic experience - not Canadian Chinese! It's a family spot and very friendly service.

I have been meaning to order some grub from 9+ Nine for awhile now and finally did last night. 60$+ later and I am to say the least extremely disappointed. I was horrified while eating the general hot chicken when I discovered some of the fried chicken pieces actually had bones in them. Don't feed this to your kids or anyone for that matter, unless you want a trip to the emergency room due to choking on little chicken bones. I have never eaten deep fried pieces of chicken that had bones hidden inside of them. Dangerous, disgusting and just plain wrong. Also we ordered the curry beef, and besides having a rather bland curry sauce the beef itself was extremely chewy and anything but appetizing. I see a lot of people like this place. I will never order again. Avoid the general hot chicken at all costs.

The service was awful at least have someone there that can understand a little English and checks in on you through out the dinner. I had 1 napkin I glass of water and it had grease floating on top of it. The general hot chicken I think was made of spine bone. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten. The server didn't mention it had bones in it. I have had this dish all over Canada (around 40 different places) and this was the first time there was bones in the dish.
The other items I had where bland

Over all a total turn off, will not be going there again

Delicious!. Fantastic food, reasonable prices, generous portions, friendly, attentive service. Bonus: Ginger beef just like you find in Calgary! I can't wait to go back!

Great tastes. If you want to get impressed, Order Curry Lobster!

Good, Bad, & Ugly. Some dishes are good, others are just plain bad (blandish sort of way), and the service is really pathetic with an attitude ("ugly"). Sorry for the analogy but it really fits here.
Mommygray
Overpriced. Highly overpriced for the size of the dishes. Food was very bland.

9 plus Nine Chinese Cusine. This is one of my favourite restaurants. It is small, pleasant and without pretense. Either on menu or off menu, the food is of exceptional quality and prepared to perfection. Prices are fair and reasonable. The staff are great.

Stephen Parsons

Awesome Find. My Girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place when we were actually going to Monsoon Cafe, just a few doors down. It was closed and we were starved, so we looked into this little Chinese restaurant. It's a little hole in the wall in a strip mall... so expectations weren't super high. However, I soon noticed that the place was about 3/4 full of Chinese patrons. A good sign.
Anyway, despite a small menu, the food was simply amazing. Perhaps the best I've had in Metro. Very reasonably priced too.
The excellent Chinese-Canadian waiter said the man who owned it used to own Fan's in Dartmouth and had retired. He hated retirement so opened this little gem of a place that has maybe 12-15 tables. He does it out of his love for cooking. And that is reflected in the quality of the food. As well, the waiter said we could get things not on the standard menu... all we had to do was ask.
I really hope people take the time to check them out...
Pete
