Review Heartwood Bakery & Cafe - Halifax

I've been coming here for 8 years and I really like it. I always order the veggie curry burger. Usually it's a millet&quinoa patty (the BEST) but this time it was a black bean patty which was still yummy but not as good as the millet&quinoa one. The price is very fair for the portion size. Tea is very generous and nice and hot. The Greek salad is tasty and their roasted potatoes... Ughnhaahhnh delicious. Service was very pleasant.

This place serves everything vegan and vegetarian. We ordered the Thai Burger which came along with some roasted potatoes and a side salad. The burger tikki was made with lentils and seeds. We also ordered a vegan pizza. The base was a kamut flour base. We were satisfied with the quantity and it sure fills you up! The sweet potato and apple soup was good too.

What I love about this place is you don't need to be vegan or vegetarian to enjoy the food. Their menu has something for everyone! The portions are generous, prices are on par with other veg spots around, and they offer daily specials which are always delicious. The interior is a bit small so I'd advise calling ahead if you're a large group. Food wise though, the place is incredible!

First time attending this restaurant. Was looking for a heath choice in dining. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and service. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their food. The food was delicious and plentiful. Never felt rush to leave or bothered by staff. The vibe is amazing with nice music playing in the background. Very laidback climate and felt at ease eating here. Would totally recommend this place to anyone looking for a great healthy choice.

I had been getting weekly messages from Heartwood to use their discount coupons. We finally made a date to go, only to find it was CLOSED since MAY!!! We were told their “restaurant“ on Water street was open so we went there. However, although google maps said it was Water street was open, it refused to guide us there but kept directing us back to the one on Quinpool Rd. We finally got to the Heartwood Hut on Water st but found it was only a take out and closed at 6 pm! We ended up at the Bicycle Thief. It was excellent! Heartwood should dismantle their ads & messages & say CLOSED on their sites. This is really unfortunate bc it was the best vegetarian restaurant in the city! And the service was great! The only drawback there was the uncomfortable seating & the dark atmosphere and it was very cold in winter. It needed better seating, lighting, heating, & more brightly painted walls.

My wife and I attended here on a very wet August 2nd holiday. Very accommodating service. Good hearty plant based food. I had the vegan burger with the curry sauce, home fries and salad.

I would seriously come here just for the hummus and guac platter, SO tasty!! So nice being vegetarian and being actually overwhelmed by choice at restaurant. Burgers are great, their bowls slap, poutine is so delicious I've had it a few times now. Definitely a cozy atmosphere and worth a trip across the bridge!

I ordered the spicy peanut heartwood bowl with rice noodles and let me tell you this was so flippin’ delicious!! This is one of my first ‘restaurant’ experiences since learning I am celiac, I had complete confidence my gluten free requirement was going to be taken seriously which gave me a huge sense of ease and allowed me to properly enjoy the food without worrying about getting sick. 10/10 so happy with this experience. (Note: the food in the picture was sitting for about 30 mins before I took the photo)

This excellent vegan restaurant is a mainstay for delicious, healthy food in Halifax. I had the lentil burger special the last time I was there and it was fantastic. (And the leftovers from the large portion gave me a second scrumptious meal at home the next day ;-)

This restaurant is deliciouse. I included a picture of the bean burrito dish we had. Everything about it is tasty right down to the corn chips. You get a nice helping of food for your money and are quite full when finished. My husband ended up ordering this again the next day because it was so good. Very fresh and very tasty. A great vegetarian restaurant. It's going to be on our return to list for sure. It's one of those places that you want to try Everything on their menu. Highly recommend 👌

I frequent Heartwood about once a month, usually for takeout. Over the past 4 years I’ve had nothing but exceptional service from them, both the food, and staff are superb. I had the pleasure of eating on their patio this summer as well, it was gorgeous and felt like we were still part of the restaurant which was really nice. Even my one negative experience was remedied so quickly and kindly, over the summer I tried to order online through Gatahub and there was a glitch, and i ended up having to wait for an extended period of time. My favourite dishes are the taco salad, traditional heartwood bowl, and the burrito! But having tried most of the menu so far there’s nothing I haven’t loved! The desserts are a great treat too! Overall: Atmosphere 5/5 Food 5/5 Staff 5/5

Absolutely charming environment and creative menu! Brunch poutine was flavorful and delicious! Reasonable prices, too :) A must-visit!

Great to eat vegetarian in the maritimes. The vegan poutine was amazing (the picture makes it look bland, but it was bursting with flavor), as was the veggie burger with peanut sauce.

After visiting a second time to Heartwood, I feel I have enough experience there to give a proper review. First off, entering the restaurant, it's a warm inviting atmosphere. This time I arrived in the evening, you get to see the lovely mood lighting with candles on each table and dimmed overhead lights. The restaurant itself has lovely decor with a really inviting atmosphere. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. The menu is fairly large, all 4 of us took quite awhile to decide because everything sounds so delicious. The menu is quite extensive offering everything from pizza, burgers, to healthier wraps and salads. They also have a quite extensive dessert selection of cheesecake, cookies and bars and the best part is, it's all vegan except when "cheese" is listed on the menu description. They also offer a full organic menu which is quite rare. I admit, I'm a fussy vegan. I don't like kale, green peppers and a slew of other veggies. So sometimes it can be hard eating out even in vegan-friendly joints because many of the places use a lot of things I don't care for. When scanning the menu at Heartwood, everything sounds extremely appetizing. To the point I actually want to order several meals. Tonight we opted for nachos as an appetizer and beet burgers for our main course. The nachos were delicious. The dipping sauces were both flavourful and accented the nachos perfectly and I loved that they had mushrooms with them as I love mushrooms. When the main course came out, my initial reaction was, "this looks good but what a small portion size". The burger is very small and the steamed greens it came with were also extremely small and of course, happened to be kale with 3 small piece of broccoli and some carrots topping it. The burger was delicious and satisfying. I did leave full but I believe that's mainly because we had the nachos first. I honestly think if it wasn't for the appetizer, I would have been very hungry when I left. I got a cookie for dessert and was also extremely disappointed by the size. It was very small especially for the cost. Overall, I think Heartwood makes tasty food but I can't justify spending the amount of money they want for their dishes. Yes, I understand they are organic but when you are strapped for cash and on a serious budget, it's just not worth it. If you are someone that can spend a little more, Heartwood may be the perfect place for you. It's just a shame they couldn't at least give you a little more for the side dishes. Offer the roasted potatoes for no extra charge with the burgers or pile on a little more salad. We need a little more bang for our buck. Just saying. :)
