Review Rockbottom Brew Pub - Halifax

Rob G
Great beer and great food. They've been accommodating with big groups and we've had great meals with just two of us. I've often found that basement bars like this really have to kick up their game a notch since they're not going to lure you in with a sunny patio, and Rock Bottom is no different. Really nice, warm atmosphere of with a staff that feels really well trained on good service. The beer is delicious. That's subjective, but the selection is good and they make it themselves. I've always found their brews to be solid (as a rock? Ugh... Sorry.) Kitchen staff are putting out solid pub meals as well. All in all an easy place to recommend to anyone.

Clean and warm atmosphere. It was surprisingly comfortable with the live music going on that night. Waitress was very friendly and did a great job despite the noise. Homemade onion rings were good. Veggie burger with gluten free bun and fresh fries was done really well. Would recommend

Came here during the burger week, love the burger so much! Was the most delicious burger I’ve had. The sauce was amazing, the burger meat was tasty, and the fries was so good!! Will back soon for sure!!

Went in with a buddy for some seafood dinner and ordered the 2 piece fish and chips. The fish portions were so big I couldn't even finish my plate (and that's not like me). The slaw was delicious and the beers were cold and crisp. Had a great evening here, and would recommend it to others

Went here for burger week and it was delicious! The burger was expensive at 14$ and they gave a small amount of fries for the price. However, the beer is all brewed in house and the food was excellent and the staff is nice.
Thomas Yungblut
Great food, great service. They have a craft beer flight of all their house beers which contains 7 (!) types of beer for only $10. Good burger selection as well.
Rob Conway
Great burgers and craft beers. Waitress was wonderfully friendly. Reasonably priced. Will be back.

Tried the sampler.. a good selection of beer.. Belgian, cream ale, stout, ipa, red, wheat, and a sour. Good nachos... corn chips aren't too salty. Fresh toppings. Attentive staff.

I would recommend checking this place out. They provide large portions and the food is very tasty! (Try their Delicious potachos!)

Pretty good beers, nice food, good service. Fast and cheap. Good place for a cozy dinner/lunch. Try the Rockbottom IPA.

Okay, so this is one of the final days in my wife and my own first ever STAY-CATION. We've been eating out almost every night this week and enjoying ourselves immensely. Friday night, around suppertime we headed for the Rock Bottom (beneath Father's Mustache) just in time for their Friday afternoon Happy Hour. I had a tall glass of rich dark chocolate stout followed by another tall glass of Irish Red. Then we ordered some eats. I had a beet salad with scallops and we each split a basket of deep-fried cheese curds and a basket of onion greens. The salad was enjoyable, the cheese curds great, but the onion rings had to be the most delicious onions rings that I have ever tasted, and I am an absolute connoisseur of onion rings. These were absolutely buried in a spicy layer of tasty batter and served up with a honey sauce that was to die for. Our server, Buck, is also the manager here, and he made certain that everything was to our liking. I had never been to the Rockbottom, but I am definitely going to go back again. I want to try some of their burgers. The only reason I didn't eat heavy that night was that I had ALREADY eaten pretty heavily earlier that afternoon and I had way too much ballast in the belly. Still, I would highly recommend you folks checking out the Rockbottom Brewpub. You will not be disappointed.

I was here the other night for some drinks and appies. I loved the risotto balls. Nachos were great too. We got the kind with nacho chips and the kind with waffle fries. We ordered way too much but it was delicious. Comes with guacamole! I also really liked the Moscow Mule. Next time I'd like to try the white Sangria. It looks great. The service was really good too. Very attentive but also gave us space. Thank you!
Terry Grusendorf
Great spot. Good food, bartender recognized us after 2 years.

We go for trivia most Tuesday nights and the food is always fresh and great tasting. The only time I ever had an issue with my order it was fixed right away. The servers are always friendly, quick and efficient. If you are going for food make sure you try the brew burger!

It's a relaxing casual atmosphere with more of a gastro pub fare. The fries are very good, and the burger is good. The chowder has an almost smokey flavour with a bit of spice. A large number of beers on tab for any palette. Good for a relaxing evening of good food and drinks.

Ordered for pickup through Skip The Dishes so I could eat something while I watched a movie across the street. The staff were very friendly, and quick in getting the order to me when I got to the restaurant. I ordered the Beef, Pork, and Bacon Burger which included onion rings and pulled pork on it, which was delicious, and fries that were very tasty as well :)

Called in a couple of times during our stay in Halifax . Reasonably priced food & drink with friendly staff .

I come fairly often for beers with friends or a small afternoon pick-me-up, and I've never had a bad experience. The beer is consistently interesting and delicious (so many different types!) and the food is great. Service is good. I highly recommend (get the potachos!).

Great staff - good choice of beers and food

Went to the Rock Bottom for the burger week burger just because of work of mouth. I didnt want fries and ooted for 3$ extra on onion rings which were not great and the fellahs said theor fries werent great either. But! We should have ordered a burger with a side of burger because i could have eaten 2 of them it was that good. Our server was great and im sure they are being overworked from burger week bustle! Oh yeah the floors are so greasy I almost slipped. Also noted waitresses skating around with hot plates in hand.

We went 2 nights in a row...one of the best Pad Thai I have ever eaten...twice! Great service from Audrey and ( I feel horrible because I forgot her name...she was super nice also) Ambiance was cozy and chill...beers were local and delicious! A must return when we go to Halifax!

Good food at the bottom. I've always found the food good here. No complaints. Most of the times I have come here are for business lunches or meetings. A lot of people seem to like it here, but it's a fairly dark, dreary basement. Although the food is good, I prefer the food in the upstairs restaurant, Your father's Mustache (same ownership). This one is a restaurant, while YFM is a very popular pub. The pan fried haddock here is fine doesn't stand up to how amazing YFM's haddock is though.
Maureen Acker-Garnett
The restaurant was very full and very busy and appeared under-staffed. They were hustling though to meet the needs! Kudos to them! We waited an above-average time for our food but we were seated at the bar and the sole bartender with a full house was lovely and she never stopped moving! My roasted potatoes were under done but otherwise the food was great! Love the atmosphere and the dollar off beers, being Sunday, was a bonus!

More people need to know about this spot! It is tucked away but so cozy with the fireplace. Great selection of craft beers - I like a bitter and I'm partial to pears so I chose the Loyalist English ale and was not disappointed. It was a Monday night so we almost had the place to ourselves. Our server was very friendly and helpful and really made us feel at home. We were informed that with a beverage purchase all pasta dishes were at a special price, including the lobster carbonara - twist my arm! And there was no skimping on the lobster. The rest of the table was pleased with their selections, including the peanut butter bottom burger. Take a wander down!

Best beer in the city! Best staff! Best pub food! Did I say great beer!
Joanne Pullin
Great service . Excellent food. It’s a cozy environment too. I’ve eaten here 3 times now and I’ll be back !

We had a great time last night at RockBottom for my 50th birthday! Sarah was our server. A group of 20 plus people and she took great care of us. Buck was also great and everyone helped us get tables together as they opened up. We will definitely be back!!
Kimberly Haslam
Great food and beer. The atmosphere is fantastic, service was great. Tanya and the rest of the group were super. Overall a great night. Thanks
Kathy Sampson Hodgson
Food good but our poor server was run off her feet. Service was spotty.
Liesje Somers Blonde
Great food, great service and a great atmosphere. We were there with an 8 year old and we found a booth, had lots of menu item options for him and enjoyed the free wifi! We will be back!
Suzanne Hogan
Menu great. Dessert great. Wind & beer great
Natasha Oickle
Loved it!!! Best burger week burger! Nice atmosphere, waitress was great, I will go again for sure!!
Bruce Carson
Best potachos with pulled pork ever! Fathom ipa is unbelievable and Tanya the very best! Thanks for a fantastic time while friends visited from Ontario!!
Paula Hann-McPherson
Atmosphere was great but was really disappointed in the food and the service. The sandwich I ordered came with all bread the turkey and bacon were little thin strips of processed something or other there was no cheese on it so I had to send it back. The waitress did the bare minimum and there was no smile or personality. Probably won't go back.

Fantastic!!!. Was visiting Halifax and stopped in several times. The brew and food is excellent and the staff - my favourite was Tanya. She is wonderful, warm and friendly. Highly recommend everyone to go when in Halifax.....Thanks...

We visit rockbottom brewery on our Halifax trip and it was awesome!
The lobster is cheap and delicious. We also tried the veggie burger and it was great.
Lifeofburgers
For the first official fish burger for Life of Burgers, the Crunchy Haddock Burger from Rockbottom was a solid choice. In a city that loves seafood, this burger does hold it’s own. I know that there are many other options within Halifax, and this is only the beginning of LoB’s fishy adventure!
Tunit
I don't know if it was because we were the only ones in this basement brewery on a weekday afternoon, but the service we got was impeccable.

We came for the selection of house beers which were a nice variety and pretty damn cheap for a about $2 a glass in a flight. Buck, our server and one of the only people in the bar, was great at chatting us up about our trip and Halifax. He even insisted in throwing some extra glasses of beers in the flight because they were new and just came out. He was passionate about his beer and it made them even more delicious.

The food unfortunately wasn't anything I'd go out of my way for. They're good to fill you up while you drink, but the fish and chips was a pretty plain piece of haddock on a fluffy batter. The Crunchy Haddock Burger was again a decent piece of fish with simple lettuce and tomato for a topping.

The place is a great quiet drinking spot in downtown Halifax. Very great place to relax after a tiring afternoon. It's a destination for cruise ships too and was kind of interesting to see a group come in for a tour and learn about local beer and culture.

Great Stout!!!! My bf loved the Fizz Gig red ale. Great beers. We also tried the sampler. The wheat beers are meh but we both aren't huge wheat beers fans. I had the veggie burger and fries. Although a soy based patty, it was still tasty. My bf had the peanut butter burger. He was in love with it! I imagine it gets busy during the weekend with students.
Fernand Belanger
The craft beers are awsome ...
I enjoy the place a lot.
Mel B
Amazing place for drinks and food. Epic burger and fish&chips, and the local brews were some of the best we've had in NS. Great atmosphere too - I would definitely go again.
Foodie Truth
First off, since Greg Nash took the reigns almost 2 years ago the place has become an institution for great craft beers....the IPAs and stout being best ive had anywhere.
As for the food, it's time to get a new chef. The food is horrible and has been horrible for a long time. Not sure if that will happen as the people continue to pile in.....for the beer and atmosphere. Staff is very good
Casual Grazer
Nice to see the craft brewing industry taking a foot hold in the Maritimes. Definate West Coast atmoshere to this outstanding brew pub.Great food and eclectic slection of crafts to compliment fine food. Competitors take note!

Not impressed. apparantly ended up sitting in booth beside owner n freinds who were very loud. We almost had to shout across table to hear over them. which we might have overlooked if the food had been worth it. soggy fries pickled with salt and the dip trio had one dip that tasted off with stale nachos. the only upside was great staff.

On the night that Adam and I went to Rockbottom, it was packed full of people and energy. Though the service was expectedly slow, being that it was a Friday night, Adam selected the Pulled Pork Sandwich and the sampler platter of beers, which he loved. He really appreciated the labels under the flight beer so that he could order more of the kinds he liked afterwards. I chose classic wings and had a pint of Deadwood Wheat. I was unimpressed by the food, it is classic average pubfare, but the crew at Rockbottom take pride in their brews and now I know why. One sentence can sum up the Rockbottom: Great beer, good crowd, okay food.

I've been here many times and have never been disappointed. A few of the staff even recognize me now and are always super friendly. The turkey avacado burger is my absolute favourite, and my husband never tires of cycling through the beer choices. Highly recommended!

Last visit. Last time i went there me and my boyfriend shared the brushcetta
the bread was soggy like it wasnt even put in the oven and the tomatoes were bad,
i no this because eating the tomatoes was like drinking a glass of pop
when tomatoes go bad they get very acidy.... not good at all
I had the lunch special of the day which was french onion soup and a turkey panini,
with roasted pepper cream cheese, the meat looked like it was just gone and
purchased from superstore just plain lunch meat nothing special
My boyfriend had there BBQ steak pizza and it was not good, it had absolutely no taste,
i even tryed it and well it was not goooood!
i wouldnt recommend unless u are just going there for a beer.

May 2012 review. What we ordered:
Meal 1: Full rack of baby back ribs, mashed potato & your choice of house made BBQ or roast garlic & beer reduction sauces.
- the ribs were cold with a sauce that had a terrible taste to it. The mashed potatoes were okay, but the side of raw green peppers was confusing and didn't go with the meal. Sent back to the kitchen - First time in our lives we ever sent something back.

Meal 2: Fettuccine Alfredo with Chicken.
- Chicken was rubbery processed and I didn't know Alfredo sauce could be made with more than half of it being an oily mess, didn't finish it.

Meal 3, which replaced meal 1- fish & Chips. Greasy fries, Fish was good and the size of the two pieces were a good size. Came with ketchup/tartar sauce/coleslaw. Very greasy and the oils used in the frying seemed old.

Dessert: SKor cheesecake. Tasted like it was stored in the freezer at some point. Not terrible, not great either.

Drinks: White wine-Good, bottomless coffee-Okay, coke on ice-Standard fair, Big Water Brown beer-Tasty, cappuccino-Very good.

Total bill: $60-plus.

Pros:
Able to make a reservation from 8:30PM onward.
Servers for drinks & food were super friendly, attentive and checked in with us often. Manager was quick to apologize to us for the cold ribs - a plus.
Liked the venue, cozy, fireplace-but it wasn't going when we were there Mid May.

Cons:
See food comments above.
We came to see two bands. They were supposed to start @ 9:30 (saturday nite) By 10:50PM, a lot of people gave up when the band spent 20 mins tinkering with their equipment but didn't actually perform. By 11PM, the entertainment still did not start and we gave up and left.

Verdict: would not go back.

Contact information.
http://rockbottombrewpub.ca/
5686 Spring Garden Road
[Under Your Father's Moustache]
Halifax, Nova Scotia B3J 1H5
p: 902 423 2938

My experience at this restaurant wasn't that great, service was a little and the dish I ordered was nothing like I expected it to be. The Stuffed Haddock with cream cheese and lobster sounds fantastic only to taste disgusting... Just another over priced restaurant.

Another Great Job. I've been to Rockbottom several times and once again everything was great.
It's nice to see they've changed the menu up again, some awesome new pastas. (can't wait to try them all)
Tonight the place was rather busy but didn't have an issue being seated or served.
We started with the Mussels Provencal as we usually do and a couple pints of the Nut Brown, then my partner had the Turkey Burger which never seems to fail and I tried the Smoked Salmon Pasta (not sure of the proper name) which was to die for. A couple of pints later we decided to try the Tiramisu ( a new addition) and it was the best Tiramisu I've ever eaten, you can tell it's not a frozen, pre-packaged dessert and our server Christina told us it's made by a local Italian and exclusive to Rockbottom.
We will be back again and again, thanks for everything Christina!
JJ
The food wasn't very good... My turkey burger was super greasy and the salad was wilted and about to turn. Service was mediocre at best and the place had a funny smell to it.
Katie
The restaurant itself is beautiful. Service was great, and the food didn't take that long. However I think there are some communication problems between the wait staff and kitchen staff. Three out of four people at our table were happy with their meals, and overall the entire table was generally pleased. I just wish I didn't have to spend time picking toppings off my dish that I asked them to hold!

Great!. Alright, so I accidentally clicked "recommend" on a bad review for this restaurant, and cannot correct that.

Anyway, this place is great. My boyfriend and I wanted to go out for a "low-key yet better than a pub" dinner and this place is one of the only restaurants we could think of that we enjoyed every single time.

When we went the place was pretty busy (they don't take rezzo's after 5) but the staff accommodated us nicely and immediately started serving us, there was absolutely no wait time to order our drinks. I had the scallops and the tenderloin and my boyfriend had the burger, wings, and salad. No complaints.

This is not a restaurant for a couple to go for a quiet dinner, but is a fun place if you aren't looking for a secluded romantic getaway in the city. They play decent music and the crowd is very energetic. Definitely recommended, and will go back again and again.

This is a great place!. I have been coming to this place since it opened and have had nothing but great food and great service! The problem with being able to post reviews about restaurants is that anyone can write a review about a place, even ex employees who have a beef with the restaurant and wants to damage their reputation, can write whatever they want and have nothing to back it up. I hope people who read these reviews don't believe everything they read on the internet! Like I said earlier, the Rockbottom has great food and great service and if you are reading this and the other reviews, you should check out this place for yourself and make your own opinion. 79 % of people like the place so it cant be as bad as some of these "reviewers" are making it out to be. P.S. Try the provencal mussels! They are the best mussels I've ever tasted!
Steven
Great service. I'm surprised by earlier review of this place! I have eaten here many times and have had nothing but great experiences! The turkey burger is fantastic and I love the nut brown beer!
Skye
Could be better. They didn't have many things that were vegetarian, which is ok, but I'd rather have something other than nachos or salad. I ended up getting the nachos to share with a friend and the salsa was disgusting. The beer itself was fantastic though. Our server was a bit aloof, but overall the dinner experience was subpar... It did not meet the decor or the price.

Romantic Atmosphere...?. I'm a big fan of cubicles and would sometimes (on my more diva days haha) only go to places that offer cubicle sittings. Rockbottom had the an incredibly chill atmosphere. Our young waiter was very polite. we got muscles to start, followed by a salmon dish for me and an handock for my bf.

The cons to the place is that I wish they had more food selection, but I guess the list of beers made up for it somewhat.
G
Gluten-free?? not really!!. Be leary of their gluten-free menu.
its delicious
but if you have celiac disease, watch out!
i had a severe reaction after eating there
probably cross contamination in the kitchen
they also screwed up our bill and refused to fix it
got charged for 3 cocktails we never got
PsychEatery
Had the Euphoria pizza which was a but small for the price but tasty. Not crazy about the beer either but a nice spot for a drink. Live music on Saturday night was good but loud for such a small place.
Geordie
Reasonable food. Chipotle mayo nice with the tandoori wrap. Microbrewed beers were good but a bit tame.
Lifeofburgers
This burger may be simple in appearance, but it definitely is not simple in taste. There were a few different aspects of this burger that, when brought together, really created something delicious. First, the maple chipotle BBQ sauce provides both a sweet and mildly spicy taste, which is thoroughly enjoyable. Secondly, the provolone cheese is a nice addition, and as someone who isn’t very experienced with this type of cheese, I was pleasantly surprised. Lastly, I actually really enjoyed the bun that encapsulates all of the ingredients. It was perfectly toasted, and the texture really added a certain something to this burger. All of these things, put together with the tasty house made patty, really created an enjoyable eating experience.

While I was home I had some delicious meals at all the local hot spots, including a first-time experience at Rockbottom Brewpub on Spring Garden Road...
Shipwrekkt
This burger was just as good as the first time I had it! I don’t know what it is, but the peanut butter and cream cheese concoction really brings out the beefy goodness.

I make a habit of checking out restaurants that A. brew their own beer and B. offer sampler trays of said beer. What the big beer brands have in marketing, microbreweries often make up for in devotion to well-crafted, flavourful beer. I had it on good authority from several people on Twitter that Greg Nash, Rockbottom’s (@RockbotmBrewpub) brewer, is the local superstar of craft beer. Thanks to @monochromegod and @benwedge for pointing me in the right direction..
