Anyways, after our hike up to Soames Hill, we stopped by Gibsons Pier. While walking around, we came across this small ice cream shop inconspicuously named Mike’s Place. It had great reviews so off we went!
Had the Italian wedding soup with the goat cheese cranberry chicken sandwich and a root beer. Oh man- let me tell you that I nearly rolled out of that joint. Oh, but it was most enjoyable. Most enjoyable indeed.
Chocolate ice cream with bacon! Need I say more?. I was in the middle of riding my bike from Vancouver to Sechelt (using the ferry, natch) and I wanted some ice cream before I started up that looooooongh hill out of Gibson's. (If you've only driven that road via car, you don't know what a bugger it is.) It was a sunny August day, and I would have been happy with something the (average) quality of Sara's. But wow -- was Mike's good!
This is for-real gelato, all right -- rich and creamy, no airiness to it. I like the way Mike's has the flavours laid out by colour in its display freezer -- all the chocolates together, shading into the lighter ones. Makes it easier to choose which combination of colour/flavour you're going to pick.
And what flavours they've got! I went all-Canuck, with a scoop of Nanaimo Bar and one called "Canadian, eh?" The Nanaimo was chocolatey, but with distinct swirls of the frosting flavour throughout, and lots of coconut flakes. But dig this -- the "Canadian, eh?" had bits of maple-glazed bacon in its chocolate base. It also tasted like there was a lashing of Hershey's syrup. Chocolate-bacon ice cream -- FTW!!!
Highly recommend Mike's Place for gelato!
An excellent Gelato, i was served by the owner's son-in-law, he and staff was friendly, I tried a few flavours, gelato was thick, creamy and yummm.
I would request them to wear gloves when handling ice cones. (especially during Covid19).
I tried other gelato places of Vancouver as well but they were no comparison with this place. Don't forget to try it out!
Initially, I thought that this place was “just” a variety store, and didn’t think much of it until it was recommended to me due to excellent sandwiches. That recommendation was correct and this is now easily one of my favourite stores on the coast. Love the food and drinks, awesome sourdough, amazing gelato and baked goods. Absolutely worth a stop if you’re in the area and want a quick treat!
Great selection of Gelato. Super tasty vegan options. Amazing sour dough bread & a sweet selection of soda pops you can't find at most grocery stores. Definitely a local gem.
One of my favourite place in town. I come all the time: I watch all the flavors of gelato, but at the end I order always chocolate and lemon. And it tastes great. I ate a looot of gelato (I’m Italian…) and thankfully I have Mike’s Place in town, so I have not to buy gelato in grocery stores. I promise I’ll try also all the other flavors before the end of the summer. People who are working there are very nice, fast and polite. Super busy but always calm and smiling. Love their coffee too and I’m pretty picky about coffee. Thank you
Every flavor is delish! Note, because Gelato is not as cold as ice cream, it melts faster - so be ready to lick drips if you're taking it far!
The gelato is made in-store and is very flavourful. So many to choose from. The staff were very friendly. My only concern that when I asked our server which flavor was her favorite she said she hadn't tried any of them.
We are recent Gibsonites / Gibsonians or whatever locals are called and this place has been a slow burn. We started coming strictly for gelato and have expanded our horizons to bread, cookies and other in house made goodies including the coffee. It never disappoints! In fact, we are having a household debate if the gelato is better than Dolce Amore on Commercial Drive. We look forward to being long time regulars here.
Mikes is the best place for gelato on the sunshine coast. Period. Homemade sandwiches, plus the added bonus of sourdough. If you get there early its still warm. I always get 2, one for the freezer. Enjoy. Super friendly too.
