Review Restaurant Amazonas - Gatineau

Angela Alvarado
Amazing food, simply delicious. Honestly one of the best and affordable Peruvian restaurants in the Ottawa/Gatineau area. Portions were amazing and everything was fresh and very well made. Service was veryy slowww, however cause how good the food was I wasn’t bothered. Definitely a must tryy.

Highly recommended restaurant in old Aylmer, off the main drag of rue Principale. Flavourful, authentic Peruvian dining, unique in the region, owned by ex-pats Segundo and Rosa of Lima. Recent changes in the kitchen have paid off in quality at the table. Fiery Ceviche, delicate Jalea de Pescado y Mariscos (lightly battered seafood) with cassava, and savoury Lomo Saltado sirloin cubes are all worth consideration. Try the nationally famous Chicha Morada drink, a purple concoction of corn, pineapple and clove.

This isn't just good Peruvian food it is some of the best food in the Ottawa area. A little out of the way but well worth it. The Empanadas are fresh and satisfying and the hot sauce is tasty. The Lomo Saltado is a must and the Arroz con Pollo is perfectly cooked with simply fantastic green rice. Don't miss it.

Great authentic food and service, will be going back often! Hidden spot in Aylmer, downside is they started giving very small portions and it’s expensive. I do understand inflation has caused issues but the lomos saltados+ shouldn’t feel like a luxury expense.

I'm speechless! I regret not trying this place out sooner. We just had the most amazing lunch on the patio. Great friendly staff, amazing food. Even the squid in my Lomo mixto was perfectly cooked! Must try.

Such delicious food! We loved the arroz con mariscos (highly recommend) and also really enjoyed the tamale (which took a few bites to get used to the taste but once we did, it was delicious). My husband also enjoyed the lomo saltado. Definitely will be going back here!

Who knew this little gem of a restaurant has been here 10 years? This was my first time experiencing Amazonas and I was pleasantly surprised! ☺️ The setting is simple and cozy. The food was superb! I will definitely be returning now that I’ve discovered it! 👍😎

Really good, home style Peruvian restaurant. Food here feels like home back in Peru. Prices are affordable. Highly recommended. My suggestion would be to introduce some meat-free and vegan options. Some of my friends were not able to taste the amazing Lomo Saltado because of that and they didn't had many options to choose from the menu. Vegetarian is not only salad. After that, we had a very nice time and the service was good, if not very enthusiastic.

Authentic family style Peruvian kitchen, just like grandma used to cook. A good selection and large portions at a fair price. Pisco sour is excellent.

Update 7/25 Newly renovated dining room. Looks amazing. The wood finished walls gives it a very modern home look. Food is still absolutely amazing. What can I say about this place. It’s like a mini vacation in your mouth. Family owned restaurant in Alymer, QC that should be packed every night because of how amazing the food is. You can really tell the food is made with love and that it is truly authentic. Every Last Sunday of the month this restaurant offers a buffet. Highly recommend it if you have always wanted to try Peruvian food Food 5 Atmosphere 4 Service 5 Overall Experience 5 I absolutely love this place. The family is so loving and is just great. We always bring family and friends here and they always love it. Please support this restaurant and family. Such a treasure

Food was amazing! The rice with shrimp dish was so fresh!!! I wanted to eat all of it but there was just too much for me. My beaver tail was delicious!!! The empanadas and ceviche were a hit with my husband. We will be back for sure to try some other items on the menu!!!

If you live in the ottawa - Gatineau area. This is the best place to eat Peruvian traditional plates. The restaurant is family owned and this family absolutely knows their Peruvian food. Been coming here for years, and I have never been disappointed with them!

October 16, 2021 Overall, the experience was superb. The empanadas were delicious. The beef was exceptional, especially with the vegetables and rice. Even though the lamb stew was delicious, there were too many other side dishes and not enough lamb. The service was attentive and welcoming. Also, there isn't ample parking, so be ready to find street parking. If you enjoy Peruvian food, this is the place for you. A strong recomendation.

Decided to come here for a date night after trying Peruvian food in South America and enjoying it. The restaurant is fairly small and informal. We ordered the empanadas as our starter, and then arroz con mariscos and lomo mixtos as our mains. Everything tasted really good and authentic. I removed a star for the service - it was a bit terse - and for the sangria, which surprisingly had liquorice alcohol in it.

Great home cooking style food. Nice portions and nice taste from Peruvian spices. Owner goes to Peru every year to pick up spices personally. The Purple Corn Tea was verry different and pleasant. The marinated beef was tender and tasty. We will go back and try a different dish.

Amazingly delicious and authentic food, and family owned. Have been multiple times and will continue to come. Every single menu item is delicious.

We have been to peru a couple times and have a deep love for the country, and the food. So came here for our anniversary this year and it did not disappoint. Our favorite was the aji de gallina and the famous pisco sours. We will certainly be back.

Incredible food! It was my first time trying Peruvian food and it did not disappoint. Hidden gem.

Really good food, friendly staff, great prices. Love this place!

We absolutely love this little neighbourhood gem. There's no pretence or gimmicks, here; just delicious, fresh and flavourful Peruvian fare. The service is efficient and pleasant - no more, no less, and the portions are generous. If you can catch the buffet, do it. You won't regret it. This is a local treasure.

If you want to try authentic and very tasty food you’ve come to the right place.

Best restaurant in town! The food is outstanding and a beautiful alternative to conventional Canadian food. The prices are amazing for this home-cooked culinary treasure - lovely people and a great place to bring children. The best is the ALL-you-can-eat-BUFFET every last Sunday of the month - this just lets you try everything else :) Includes a nice terrace ! We'll be back soon!

This restaurant is just amazing. Besides the excellent food, the owner Segundo, invited us to stay even though it was almost closing time. It was a very generous offer especially on a Sunday when I'm sure they would have liked to go home early. This was my first time trying Peruvian food (and lamb) and I was really impressed. Besides the wonderful combination of tastes, textures and colours, the food left you with satisfied without a feeling of heaviness or after tastes. Excellent!!!

Delicious! I can’t wait to try their buffet as well!

Wonderful Peruvian food in Aylmer. I gem in the middle of the city.

The service is excellent and the food is awesome!. "Seco de Ternero", "tamales" and "papa rellena" are my favorite ones.

Super bon resto, très chaleureux et typique.

Excellent food but a scammer boss. I ordered for more than $100 in take away for a friendly evening. A dish was missing when I arrived home. I called back and said I could pick him up (second trip) for more convinience. Once in the square, the boss tells me that's not true. For the record, the cook I had spoken on the phone told me to come back for the missing dish. As there was no detailed invoice provided with the first order, I showed him the credit card receipt. He persisted in his refusal. A great example for losing customers. And a wasted evening.

Authentic Peruvian food. Amazing family run restaurant. The food was outstanding. Probably the best ceviche I have ever had. And the empanadas were just wow. Love the avian and the chef was amazing. We got to take a little bit of Peru with us. This is a diamond in the rough. Amazing place. Everyone must eat here.

Dissapointed. To say the least, disappointed, even tough some of the dishes in the menu are well prepared, fish is not always fresh in the chupe or ceviche (too soft or sticky). When it comes to the buffet, then it's worse, hard to find plates, or food in containers, or napkins. Like they were not ready for the people, like they are running out of everything, even having reservations. And the owner (?) seems like he does not like too much people going there, is not willing to answer questions and when he finally does it, he does not sound nice. Better customer service is a must!!!! Just twice, no more

Amazing girls night. My friend has been going to this place for a while and I finally joined her. We ordered a quinoa salad and some kind of stuffed patato. Both were delish. Quinoa salad particularly surprised me as it was full of flavor and great size. Did I mention it was reasonably priced at 7$? Bu t then I tried the patato. I was amazed

Yum!. We had empanadas, ceviche, arroz con pollo and a pitcher of "natural juice". The empanadas were piping hot and perfectly spiced. The juice was delightful -- it seemed like a mixture of berry and citrus of some kind, freshly blended. The ceviche had the wonderful, fresh, lime-chili essence I was hoping for, but texture of the fish was a bit too soft -- I wondered whether it had been left in its marinade slightly too long.

The arroz con pollo was a revelation! Who expects any surprises from chicken and rice, right? But this rendition was wonderful. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the green rice that accompanied it had just the right amount of cilantro in it. We'll return to the restaurant some day just for that.

Went there and wasnt satisfied, people say they reasonable prices, but i think the portions are very cheap, i bought a chicken dish to go, they charged me like 13/15$, i was very anxious to taste their cuisine, only to arrive home to a single drumstick and a few scoops of green rice, i was very surprised and disapointed! I was hoping for potatoes and/or a salad also.... Will never give them my money again

Finally!!!. Having been to Peru on two occasions, I was quite sad that there was no traditional Peruvian restaurant in the Ottawa area. Well that all changed, after having discovered Amazonas, which has only been open for a short time, but already with a strong cult following in the region - People drive from all over Ottawa to eat here, and now I know why!

First, the bad reviews are unfounded. This is not a 4 star restaurant, this is a small family owned place, home cooked food type of place. Don't come here expecting bells and whistles. Come here expecting authentic, affordable Peruvian dishes with extremely friendly service in a home dining room setting, all at a very affordable price.

I ate here with my gf and another couple, and all 4 of us loved it. We started with the Pisco Sour, highly recommended as an aperitif. We then shared the Ceviche, which was simply out of this world, just like in Peru! We all had different main dishes, the seafood soup - excellent, a lamb dish, chicken dish, and other seafood. All of it was well presented, sufficiently seasoned - yet without too much salt, and the portions were just right.

I will definitely return here again to try some of the other dishes, and also to get my Ceviche fix.

Extremely disappointing experience for my fiancé and I. We had read the reviews so when we finally went we were very disappointed with not only the service but with the quality of the food. We were ravenous so we ordered the hard boiled egg and mashed potato appetizer and hungrily devoured it only to finish and think that it was under seasoned and just not that good. My fiancé had order the Chupe con camerones y mariscosas and I unknowingly had the same thing but on rice. It was supposedly better than paella. But not even close. The veggies I only assume where out of a bag from the freezer, and the base for the soup tasted incredibly similar to Cambell tomato soup. I say go at least once and see for your self. I hope your experience is better than ours was, we won't be going back.

Hot Sauces, green rice was excellent!

Please eat here! We need this place to stay open in Aylmer!. Living in a small town like Aylmer can be dismally disappointing when it comes to seeking good food. Not that we mind driving to Ottawa or Montreal for some really good noms, but sometimes its nice to eat in your own back yard. Fortunately, Aylmer has been blessed by a relatively new, small Peruvian restaurant called Amazonas. We will be the first to confess that upon first approach, we were reluctant, but having now eaten there we are relieved! The environment is comfortable and clean, the service is very friendly, and the food is excellent, authentic, and a welcome change from the terrible and abundant "bring your own wine" establishments that seem to flourish here. We had the beef empanadas, clearly all made by hand here in the restaurant, and were so good! We also sampled the tamales which came freshly cooked in banana leaf and toped with tomatoes, onions, and coriander and a side of hot habanero sauce (not too unlike piri piri). As this was our first visit, we shyed away from the Ceviche and lamb dishes (you just never know) and ordered fish, which was very fresh, very flavourful and served with fried yucca. We fully plan to order the Ceviche and other specialities on our next visit. Overall, a great visit, and a welcome addition to the area. The only negative we can point out was the wine. We ordered a couple of glasses of Chardonnay, which were served warm. Not a bid deal, and the wine was not the focus, and everything else was perfect!

Fantastic Family Run Restaurant. Great food and friendly family service. I truly recommend this place. Authentic wholesome cuisine and worth getting out to no matter where you are in the NCR! Only problem is the prices are too low! shhhh.. don't tell.

First impression. Small place, if you didn't know it was there you would probably drive past it. Very cozy, intimate and private. Child friendly although I did not bring my child at my visit. Menu doesn't offer a huge variety of options, but I assure you that what they do offer is delicious and coming from me a somewhat picky eater that is good. Everything is homemade, the service is wonderful and prices are more than affordable. Portions are huge enough for 2 people and average at about $10-14 per plate. We shared empanadas which were delicious and huge, just that would of filled me up then I had the chicken meal with cilantro rice. Highly recommend and will go again.

True to the Peruvian Food Experience. Having been to Peru a couple of years back and loving their food, my boyfriend and I had been looking forward to seeing a Peruvian restaurant show up in the region ever since.

We visited on a Friday night and Amazonas did not disappoint; the atmosphere was calm and laid back with a true to Peru feel in the decor and the menu. We both enjoyed the Pisco Sour; true to our previous samples from the country and both enjoyed our plates (Ceviché and the Lomo Saltado).

Our meal was topped off with simple but tasty sweetened condensed milk filled cookies.

The service was impeccable and we will certainly be returning!

If you are looking to enjoy a new cuisine in an intimate, but relaxed atmosphere - I recommend visiting Amazonas.

Limited menu but well prepared. We had gone with the understanding that the restaurant had no license to serve-they do now which updates the October 15th review. However the server did not offer wine or even the traditional Pisco Sour. That being said we tried the Chicha Morada beverage (non-alcohol) made from black corn and pineapple. Unique flavour, it was delicious.
The seafood platter and fish portions were breaded with Yucca which gave it a light tempura like quality not overwhelming the flavours of the dish itself. The portions were decent and reasonably priced. It's a great place to try but could also be a one off unless you are truly enamoured with the food. In short, it is everyday local Peruvian cuisine. I wonder if they will be brave enough to put Guinea Pig on the menu, another local favorite. I was in Peru recently. Had one as a pet. Just couldn't do it.

Great Peruvian Food. This is a great restaurant with amazing food, we made a reservation for 4 people and when we arrived our table was ready, Our server, a friendly looking Peruvian looking teenager, was very friendly and took a good care of us. The menu is not that big and there is not a alcohol licence yet since they just open couple months ago, but they prepare everything they have amazingly. It is a good place to try some Peruvian sodas and other traditional drinks. It totally reminded me the flavors we tried when we were visiting Peru couple years ago. We order most plates, since we decided that we were sharing everything, wow!!! great idea.
The causas, the ceviche, the anticuchos, the papa rellena are all great recommendations for people looking for new favors. We will go back soon.

I am so impressed for the food quality and real flavor of this restaurant.

When i visted the Amazonas, i had Chupe de camarones y mariscos which was Really amazing And you get a lot of food for the amount you pay! However my only concern was the carrots and peas in it. Cause you could tell they were from frozen and not fresh. Everything else in it was super good. Also the owners were super nice and the place was super cute, very quaint. Definitely will Be going back.
