The dinner was delicious and the whole experience was heart felt as if an Italian family had opened their doors and invited us to their dinner party. And we can also see the amazing passion from the food they prepare because they are so proud of everything they grow, make or cook. If anyone wants to participate the true Italian hospitality, it is worth a drive to visit Mangia E Scappa in Fort Langley.
I was invited as the plus one to David aka “Picky Diner”, judge for this year’s @Vanfoodster pizza challenge. A competition between several restaurants to see whose unique pizza creation runs supreme, a contest that runs every two years. As a disclaimer, when it comes to anything media related: plating and portion size may be gussied up and/or paired down, and the service will usually be top notch. Though I can at least paint you the most accurate image when it comes to the food and the setting, as how I interpret it. But as always, these are my opinions and you need not take them as fact. Unless you have my exact background, have lived my exact experiences, and we possess the same tongue; no one can truly taste and appreciate as you do.
I'm glad I ignored all of the negative reviews; this place reminded me of the quaint trattorias I visited throughout Italy. My guest and I spent a perfectly delightful evening there: the food was good, unpretentious Italian fare. The pizza was authentic, the closest you'll find in that neighborhood to real Italian pizza. If you're looking for an overloaded pizza with a doughy crust and an abomination of toppings, you won't find it here. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the accompanying sauce was decent, and the squid we ordered as an appetizer was crisp and lightly battered. The cannelloni I had for dessert was superb, better than some of the cannelloni I had in Italy.
