the place is a little run down, and the owner seems a little surly, but the King has some of the best pho in Edmonton. the broth is rich and sticky with gelatin--it's the real deal, not like the thin bouillon-cube water you get at so many other places in town.
The infamous mustache man and his hearty bowl of pho has been favored by many foodies around the city, grabbing wind and light thanks to the owner's daughter @Lindork. Any and every foodie in the city is well accustomed to the hole in the wall joint down in Chinatown.
Running from Wednesday to Sunday from 11am-730pm, being also a cash only establishment, it’s taken me awhile to bring myself over to try their picturesque bowls myself.
Spring Rolls - ($3.95) - Came with 3pcs. Straight out of the deep fryer, these crispy little bites of goodness are my kryptonite. Not as good as home but just about on par!
Pho Dac Biet - ($10.50) - Well, this was yummy. The broth is actually really good, like clean/pure good. No MSG mess but had a strong flavor all around. The herb plate came with the typical beansprouts and basil leaves but also had hot mint too! Which is a first I’ve seen at a restaurant setting.
Prices and portions were fair, I was expecting more taste wise considering the hype; overall average. Won’t be in dire need to come here to satisfy the pho cravings though.
Best thing to eat on a rainy day...Pho. Best place to get pho....King Noodle. Their x-large bowl is like no other in the city. A great place to get Pho, great flavours and value. Be warned...this place gets busy and doesn't take debit (but have a convenient ATM)
Simple beef ball pho 🍲 and it was delicious. Came with usual trimmings of Bean sprouts; red chili 🌶 pepper and aromatic greens and fresh for your soup!
Broth is clean and clear, with little to no fat! Rating 10/10 for food, service by owner to be less desired... what you want; slap it down and eat. No service. What did you expect for Chinatown
Hands down best bang for your buck tasty pho place in Edmonton. I always get the XL Pho Dac Biet and it is to crave for. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is wanting pho!
My first impression of the place was the physically it didn't look very inviting. The place could update its style and perhaps use a few new pieces of furniture. I've had pho from many places and I'd have to say the pho broth here is lacking in heaviness of beef bones. After having the entire bowl including the soup, I felt quite thirsty for the rest of the day. I think there was too much salt.
Good to almost great tasting pho and bun bo hue here. That said, this restaurant is in dire need of a renovation. To be blunt, this restaurant is a DUMP that makes one question the cleanliness of the restaurant and the food. I think the dining experience here would be much enhanced if the owners re-invested back into the restaurant in order to clean up the appearance.
Vietnamese style noodle soup, if you didnt know. Haha. One of the better family owned pho places, location and interior is abit sketch. But the soup is one of, if not the best out there, and i know ive been to probably 15+ different pho places, most are generic, its not very salty but at the same has a strong beefy heavy flavour(as though they use alot of actual ingredients to boil the soup) unconfirmed tho. The bean sprouts are usually not very fresh tho, kinda soft as though they been sitting around a few days. Other than that, its my first choice for pho! Because in my opinion the soup is most important.
very good tasting soup made w perfection . always full of customers. parking sucks like anywhere downtown. king noodle must be visit if you are a soup lover
I am by no means a Pho expert. I have a couple of friends that are very fond of the stuff and have tried about five different restaurants that serve up some great noodles.
I have been to King Noodle a handful of times and I am in love with their soup!
It is located in China Town and the building is a little on the old side. Yes, they could probably use some renovations. Some of the best food I have ever had has been in some places that aren't that pretty.
King Noodle's Pho has made Tomato's Top 100 Things to Eat list and this article is proudly displayed on each table. I have to agree. The soup is damn tasty!
The noodles are always cooked to perfection and the broth is flavourful. The meat has always been tender and tasty. You are given bird's eye peppers, some citrus fruit, bean sprouts and fresh herbs on the side to add to your soup if you wish. There is plenty of sriracha and hoisin sauce on hand if you like that too.
The man with the beautiful mustache is polite and efficient but not overly friendly. The food comes out quickly.
This last visit we were a little disappointed with the Vietnamese coffee. It was served in a to go cup rather than allowed to drip brew in your cup at your table. Still tasty.
You get a great value for your dollar here. The bowls are huge and they don't skimp on the meat or the "extras". It is a cash-only establishment, which I keep on forgetting about.
There is pay parking located on the north side of the building.
