Takoyaki, Green Tea Float, and Squid Karage
Wednesday isn’t just for wings. Takoyaki special at Ikki Izakaya if you want something different. Although wings are good any day of the week. Takoyaki is grilled octopus dumplings with takoyaki sauce and mayo. It’s delicious here and it’s topped off with shavings of dried fish. Suh gud. You need to order a drink to get the special and this Green Tea Float was the thig. Haven’t had a float like this before and it’s refreshingly good. Squid karage was one of the specials and it was satisfying when dipped into the spicy mayo. Only wished there were a little bit more squid on that dish.
Ikki is located on Jasper and 119, and is a cozy restaurant. Service is kinda slow on Takoyaki nights and it becomes busy later in the evening. Need to check out thursday special with yakitoris. Good drinking spot with good food.

I live in the building right next door and it is convenient having this here. West Jasper is becoming a destination for restaurants and they have good dependable food here. Tip: good specials on weekdays for cheaper eats.
Tried their takoyaki night and I overall enjoyed the experience. I was a little iffy about octopus was it was good. Happy hour sake was good too and enjoyed it as a first timer.
I tried Ikki for the first time a little while ago and I fell in love. I love getting Japanese comfort food here and just relaxing. I really like how the servers take time to talk to you even if it is just to ask you how your day has been.
Located near the quiet part of Jasper Ave, Ikki is kind of hidden but stands out slightly in a line of dark storefronts. I think the atmosphere here is amazing and the food is so tasty.
I came here with mommy after she picked me up from work. Daddy couldnt come with us. Mommy and me both like this. I eat one ball and she puts one ball in her mouth. We both like balls.
Wonderful place. First of all, the staff is magnificent. Very pleasant and charming, holds a comfortable conversation. The environment is so inviting, the chatter and the closeness of all the people still allow for a sense of privacy. The selection of sake is delightful. The cocktails are great, offering a selection of hot and cold sake. The must try's are the Ginger Ama-Sake, Maccha-tini (green tea cocktail), and a hot Plum sake. Absolutely delicious. Majority of the staff bring Japanese really makes you feel like you are in Japan. Music is authentically Japanese as well, great tunes to go along with a great evening. The food is also very tasty, creative menu and cute platings. Definitely a drinking spot. Best for drinking and a small appetite to try explorative new flavours. The Motsuni stew and Okonomi dogs are my favourites. The fresh salad roll is surprisingly delicious for its simplicity. If you're an explorer of new and delightful flavours, definitely spend a night at Ikki Izakaya!
Ikki - Authentically Japanese - Checked. Small dish portions - Checked. Super high prices - Checked.
Why does the equation always end up like that? Traditional Japanese preparation methods always lead to super high prices and super small portions. But you know what? I'm glad I came in to try because it reminded me of my recent Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto trip so much. This is the real stuff. As real as Izakaya Tomo, Yuzen, Sushi Wasabi, and now Dorinku. I can't get into the specifics here but you foodies here know what is common with all 4 of those restaurants listed above. They fall into the same category as Ikki. Let's just call it excellence and you can decrypt it amongst yourselves.
I was crying inside when I saw the prices in the beginning and at the end when I had to pay my bill. But every moment in between was blissful. OK well not completely, because the place was very small and I was being very boisterous that day (no alcohol even). Every single person in the restaurant could hear what I was saying and what kind of profanity that was coming out of my mouth. I think the people there, who presumably lived on Jasper Ave or within the high rise of which Ikki is beneath, just wanted me outta there.
From the takoyaki, to salmon salad, to unagi, to tsukune and finally the fries - everything was flawlessly prepared with great taste, presentation, and heartfelt love associated with it. It made me quite speechless that day actually. I thought it was some poorly prepared food with high prices. Nope, it was as close as you can get to Japan without flying over there or going to Vancouver. For those of you who love Izakaya Tomo and want a slight change of plans, Ikki is a great place to visit. I almost felt that Ikki tasted one notch above Izakaya Tomo... but I still like Izakaya Tomo the best given the atmosphere, price point, portions, and variety. The ikki menu is very small and the portions are very small. You are really just slowly torturing yourself yet gratifying yourself at the same time by paying very high prices for very small portions of really great tasting food. It's very much a dilemma eating at Ikki. I wish I can elaborate further on that point but I shall keep it clean :D Those of you with inquisitive minds please look a little further and compare this dilemma to something else... hahaha.
My favorite thing about this restaurant is the atmosphere. It is super fun. I would recommend visiting on their takoyaki night. I would also recommend trying their traditional box drinks. It was a first for me and I enjoyed it. Very unique in Edmonton.
