Review B-bim-baab Restaurant - Edmonton

The food was pretty good. I went back to try the King's Galbi. OMG it was good! The beef was so tender. It like melts in your mouth.

Very good food, you can order from the menu and be served quickly or enjoy the buffet. Service was promp and friendly, I will go here again!

It’s my second visit to this place. The food was good and portion was ok! We ordered the bibimbap and seafood tofu soup

Good food for a good price, very comfortable too!

Delicious! It's our second time here and we love the food so much. Even my picky 4 year old mentioned how delicious his shrimp tempura was. Generous portions at the right price! And the service was great as well.

We loved our time living in Korea. But the thing we missed the most was the food. It’s hard to find authentic and high quality Korean food in Edmonton at a reasonable place. I tried this restaurant for the first time today and had the dolsot bi-bin-bop and it was phenomenal. Great food, staff and prices are decent. I’ll be back.

The service was terrible, the food was far from the real Korean food , the tips was added in advance so beware not to tip twice like I did ..

This is one of the longest standing Korean eateries in the city having been in the same location for over 30 years. Unfortunately they no longer serve top quality Japanese food anymore. Their Korean dishes are still quite tasty but lean towards the expensive end. Service is friendly but a bit on the inadequate side due to shortage of staff. I am a little disappointed with the way they charge for many of their menu items as "market priced" which should normally only apply to food like live seafood or seasonal items

oh my god, this restaurant is so greedy and a total scam.they charge more but the price on the menu.no service at all.
my friend was there before us and order a tea, when we get there, never come check on us and bring us any drink until we have to ask twice.her tea is already cool and the server bring us 2 more empty cups and charge us $1.5 each. 15% tips on top of the bill but will never tell you,I barely check my bills eating out, my bad. when I got home realize I tips them 30% in total and the dish I order being charge more then the menu price! I never write a review on a restaurant even I don't like the food and never go back. but this time makes me really mad. how come such a dishonest reataurant still running in EDMONTON !!!!!

This used to be my go to place. The food is delicious but tonight’s experience will not bring me back to this restaurant. I bought a groupon for a $30 gift card. I presented the Groupon. The server went back to the til and reprinted the receipt with a 15% gratuity on it!!!When I asked about why there was a gratuity she said “ it is policy when using a groupon.” I tried to argue that this is not ok because I had crappy service, There were only 3 of us at the table and I did not feel that our server deserved 15% and they are basically charging me extra because I used a groupon. This is such a sneaky thing to do. I used to love this place but I will no longer be going there because of this underhanded crap.

So this is a restaurant that started up in the same spot that another Korean restaurant (Korean Gardens) was open a long while back. Regardless of how the food was back then, I have to say that the food now is pretty good, and they have a pretty extensive menu. Korean restaurants in general seem to be springing up all over the place in Edmonton now, and this is good news because the more competition there is, the more each restaurant will need to step up its game in order to keep up. B Bim Baap has good food at prices are that are not more expensive than much of the competition that they face, especially as they are in the south side of the city where most Korean places are located.

I will also say that I have not ever had to wait for a long time any time I've gone there, and this is likely because they are located in the the south industrial area between 91 St and Gateway Blvd. They have items that other Korean restaurants don't such as bibimnaengmyon (spicy cold chewy noodles with vegetables, meat, and hard-boiled egg), so it's a good place to go if you want to try dishes aside from the staples like bibimbab. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone who has a hankering for Korean food or just good food in general for that matter.

I don't live in Edmonton and this means I cannot visit this restaurant as often as I would like. However, if I'm in Edmonton, this is always my #1 choice. I always have beef bulgogi, and it's always fabulous. It's cooked to perfection, and I enjoy every bite. I wish they will give me extra kimchi, I always feel a little awkward having to ask for a refill. I highly recommend this restaurant. The service is excellent, the prices are reasonable, and words are really inadequate to describe how much I love eating my favorite meal there.

Nestled in an industrial park by the Whitemud, B-Bim-Baab is a hidden but popular Korean eatery. We weren't expecting too many people when visiting at 3PM on a Sunday but there was a surprising amount of tables occupied. Since brunch is a thing, I guess linner (or dunch) can be one too. I've been to B-Bim-Baab once before (pre-blogging days) but

wow so I have only a couple of Korean restaurants in the city that I keep going to because of how great they are. Now, I can add B-Bim-Baap to my list.

The first time I went here was on a weekday night around 8pm, a little late for dinner, and I saw the place was half filled. This was a good sign in my opinion as this is located in an industrial area and I wouldn't have expected a lot of people during that time of the night.

We had the gamjatang and oh sam bokum. The gamjatang was really good, actually I've never had it before but I thought it tasted great. Lots of meat in the pork bones. We got the size small for $16 and it is way bigger than I expected. It's perfect to share between 2-3 people. They offer it in bigger sizes like medium and large and those are probably best to share with a big group of people.

The oh sam bokum is a spicy sizzling dish with squid and pork (from what I remember) and it tasted great. I've had buldak bokkum before and this tasted very different. It had more of a barbecue, smokey flavour as well as spicy. Great dish! Absolutely loved it.

The second time I went was for lunch and they had a bibimbap lunch special but here's the catch - you have to add the meat which costs extra haha. We also got the pork tofu stew which came with a bowl of rice. The kimchi pajeon tastes really good here! I usually don't order that because it never tasted good to me when I got it at other places, but here is really good.
They only gave 3 kinds of banchans and I love pickled radish so I asked for it and they were more than willing to give me some lol.

Service was average; I noticed that they don't really smile lol but the owner is so nice and so friendly! Overall, great place for Korean food. It's definitely worth the drive for me. Their menu is very extensive and when I went, I really wanted to try everything. I will definitely be back.

Recently visited the restaurant, it was a bit lack of deco since my last visit few years ago. The food is a bit pricy in my opinion. The worst experience is the service. Didn't feel welcoming and the male servers made us felt rushed. We left the place not feeling satisfied and had to get food elsewhere.

I have come here several times in the past for the lunch buffet and always satisfied, that is until today. nov. 25, 2016. I should mention that it has been several months since my last visit.

I like to get in before noon (11.40am) and the lunch rush & I always start with some salad items and the soups. The salad items (kim chi, sprouts, etc) were chilled - good! The soups were just warm, no steam rising and it didn't even warm the bowls - I had tried 3 of the 3. Also, the wonton soup bin only had 4 pieces in it - I took 2 and it was empty both times I went past it afterwards.

The main course items were all the same temperature - that is to say ambient room temperature. I mentioned this to one of the waitstaff and they went over and put their hands under the heat lamps. I hate to break it to you guys but the food has to arrive HOT in order for the warming table to keep it at an acceptable serving temperature.

I think the food was put out way before the lunch crowd was there.

I haven't been here for several months so when we saw two guys serving the tables rather than the women I wondered if there was new ownership.

Anyways without trying to be rude but that lunch had a very short 'residency' time in me. I had rumbling stomach and 2 visits to the washroom within an hour of leaving there.

We've been enjoying going to this restaurant for a few years. It's located in an industrial area in the south side, a bit removed from the main roads. It's a decently sized place with plenty of seating, although decor is a little lacking. Large variety on the menu, although some items are a bit pricey. Food is also pretty good, with my favorites being the dolsot bibimbap and the jjangmyeon. The only downside is the service can be quite slow after they take your initial order. I find it hard to flag staff down for more water, food or for the bill.

The search for authentic Gam Ja Tang in Edmonton is over as we have found it here! Their Gam Ja Tang can definitely rival that of Owl of Minerva's in Toronto! Great food, great staff! We will keep coming back whenever we need a Korean food fix.
Famished Feline
Pretty nice little buffett. Items were fresh. My favorite was the Korean wings. The service is poor. No one checks on you and you can't get more water easily. None of servers seem to speak English. It's a tired resturant. I don't think the carpets have ever been cleaned ... points are only for food not ambiance or service

My boyfriend and I have been going to B-Bim-Baap for the past few years. It is probably one of our favorite Korean restaurant. The King Galbee is delicious!
B-bim-baap also serves some really delicious sushi rolls from their Japanese restaurant Kenko, that used to be open right inside b-bim-baap, but is now closed.
Though, I've notices that the servers don't seem to happy, every time we order something from the Kenko menu, even though they offer it. I would've given a 4.0 rating, but the service has gone downhill over the years. The last visit, no one bothered to come check on us, and when i need more water, I couldn't get a hold of anyone.
The food is so good here, that I'm willing to look past the horrible service.

I came here for the first time last week and loved it! The buffet was amazing, they had really great bulgogi and their fried rice was pretty good too. It was decently priced and totally worth it. I would highly recommend this place!

This Korean restaurant was pretty decent. The crispy rice bowl, Dolsat, was disappointing (quite bland) but the Galbie ribs and Charp Chae (sp?) was quite good. It's great for a wide variety of pallets as they have a mix of vegetarian, seafood and other foods to try. The restaurant is comfortable but the service was a bit slow at times. Overall, it's worth a try though, especially for the Galbi ribs which were amazing!!!

One of the oddest places in my opinion to see a Korean restaurant, in the middle of a industrial area. At 8:30pm on a Saturday it was quiet but it was all Korean clientele. People have complained that the service has really gone down hill but I could careless, as long as the food is still tasty, that's all I care about. I've sampled their other dishes like Kimchi Fried Rice and Beef Short Ribs in the past, all delicious in their own right.

Of course the best part of Korean food is the side dishes you get for free. Kim chi, bean sprouts and seaweed, delicious! I always get their Charp Chae (glass noodles) which is one of my personal favourites. Who knew noodles like that could hold so much flavour? It's a little expensive but Seafood Pancake is another must. Packed full of seafood and onions it has a little chewiness mixed with a tad of crispness. My girlfriend got their basic B Bim Baab. With a good amount of gochujang it was tasty. It's a very far trip for me but whenever it's worth the trip especially when you have leftovers to take home.

As JT mentioned below, it appears that the service at this restaurant has deteriorated quite a bit considering I had a very similar experience recently.

After browsing the reviews online, my friend and I had settled on B Bim Baab for what appeared to be authentic Korean food and good service. It is located in a rather odd spot inside an industrial park on the city's south end but I suppose that quite a few Korean and Japanese restaurants are located in the middle of nowhere. We arrived shortly after noon and were seated quickly. A redeeming fact about the restaurant is that the menu was rather comprehensive with many dishes to choose from: Korean BBQ, bibimbap, katsu, fried rice, soups and the list goes on.

I settled on the salmon bibimbap and the seafood pancake while my friend chose the kimchi fried rice and tofu steak. According to the menu, you can opt for brown rice in your bibimbap on Saturdays. I inquired about whether or not this was an extra cost option to our server but unfortunately, I could not understand a single word that she said. I tried to make hand gestures about brown and white rice but she ended up saying something about an egg. Oh well, no biggie.

When our food arrived, my friend tried a sliver of the salmon in the bibimbap and gave me a weird look. I had a slice and noticed it was partially frozen. I'm pretty sure they were using the heat off the rice to thaw the salmon before giving me the dish. Very disappointing. The seafood pancake was rather forgettable as the batter overpowered everything else. I had to dip it heavily into the sesame sauce provided for me to stomach it. Also, the tofu steak was just tofu covered in a fried egg. Again, rather forgettable. The only redeeming dish was my friend's kimchi fried rice which was pretty good with what I presume to be lots of sesame oil used during the cooking process. But there doesn't seem to be a lot of kimchi in the kimchi fried rice.

It didn't seem like they cared about us after giving our food as our waters were not refilled until after we finished eating. But the worst was yet to come. After handing us our bill, we waited for them to bring us the credit card machine. We waited and waited. After about 20 minutes, we decided to go find someone because it was obvious that nobody was going to come back. When we did find another server, she was very confused about the whole ordeal so we told her that we just wanted to pay and leave.

We wanted to split the bill since my friend was paying cash and I was paying by credit card. It was enough of a process to try and explain the situation as my friend wanted some change back that this place does not warrant a return.

Went to B Bim Baab with some friends last night for dinner. What a delightful treat! I had the Bim Baab with chicken and was not disappointed! Loved the flavours and the atmosphere. The waitress didn't speak much English, but was super sweet and very considerate of our time.
We had fried zucchini in egg to start - another tasty treat! All-in-all, it was wonderful, and I will happily return one day!

I went with some friends to B Bim Baab Restaurant & Lounge couple of weeks ago and I feel this restaurant is still one of my favourite Korean restaurant in Edmonton. Seafood and Green Onion Pancake. To start off the night, we shared the Seafood and Green onion pancake. The portion was pretty generous, to our surprise. It was really tasty with pieces of seafood like octopus, mussels in the pancake. The pancake was very crunchy, combined with the texture of the seafood was delicious. The only issue I had with this dish was probably too much green onions compared to the amount of seafood. Other than that, the dish was yummy.

Delicious food!!!! I have come here many times, and even with take-out the food holds true to both quality and taste. I love it here! The sitting area is spacious, the service is delightful, and they are very gracious. Their side dishes are also very tasty (seaweed, kimchi, and bean sprouts). Some of my favorite dishes are their seafood pancake, beef bulgogi soup and also their stone bowl bi bim bap. My friend and I have tried many Korean restaurants in Edmonton, and this is simply hands down the best!
Some Guy
The food was delightful, with nobody saying that their food was bad. We had a mix of dishes, from a spicy seafood soup to Bul Go Gi to fried rice, and all was good. The only reason this place doesn't get a higher rating is because our service was quite bad (like many people in group saying they wouldn't come back bad). The waitress obviously was unfamiliar with her craft, taking only part orders at a time, forgetting entire people. They also served the kids (who had the easiest dishes) last which is a carnal sin for restaurants. I don't know if it was because of the plenitude of Caucasian diners or the size of the group, but we definitely felt like we were targeted for worse service than neighbouring tables.

I ordered a fried chicken with a sweet and sour sauce (forgot what the exact name was called). It was delicious and all of my friends really enjoyed it and complemented this dish. Only complaint is the portion size of this particular dish (mainly their meat dishes which is unfortunate for obvious reasons) and was not that filling which is why I would recommend ordering another small dish if you want to get somewhat full. My friend ordered a kimchi stew but if somewhat lacked in seasoning but most importantly, it was not spicy enough for our taste. Overall, food was decent and worth giving it a try. 0.5/1

Service was awesome and the waitresses were extremely friendly. 1/1

The decor was nice as well. The wooden interior gave it a traditionally and authentic atmosphere. 1/1

Price was good. I would say it is very affordable. 1/1

Would I come back? Why not? 0.5/1

Our Toronto condo is about a 20 minute walk from Korea Town, so we get there often and we're big fans of Korean food. Unfortunately our Saskatoon home is in a city where there isn't a decent Korean food scene, and we'd been in Saskatoon for a while and had a Korean food craving. So, when we were travelling to Edmonton for a quick stay-over conference, we were excited to try this well reviewed spot.

Service was very friendly and attentive - very much on par with what we've come to expect from Korean eateries. And the food - well, we are most content.

We were surprised to see Chicken Katsu on the appetizer menu but since these folks have a co-located Japanese restaurant we decided to try it - and it was delicious! For our mains we did as we often do; we asked our server to recommend her favourites, and happily ordered King's Galbee (three, 3" chunks of wildly tender beef ribs in a delicious sweet and slightly spicy sauce) and Oh Sam Bokum (tender squid and pork served with vegetables and a nice, spicy sauce). Both were excellent and we highly recommend these dishes. The Oh Sam Bokum would be easily shared amongst four people - especially with the delicious all you can eat sides of Kimchee (spicy and crunchy), bean sprout salad (yummy) and seaweed salad (sublime and a perfect taste contrast to the Oh Sam Bokum).

As others have noted the food here is definitely on the high side in terms of price, but it's exceptionally good. Great food is great food, high quality ingredients are high quality ingredients, and great service is great service. These things all cost money to produce, and just because they serve Asian food doesn't mean they have to lose money doing it.

Edmonton is lucky to have this restaurant; hopefully they are successful for years to come. We'll definitely be back the next time we're here.
As I said in my last post, I’ve recently had the chance to try a couple of Korean Restaurants back to back, Lee House and B Bim Baab. B Bim Baab is located in the middle of nowhere. Or well, the industrial south side of Edmonton, where nothing is really located. That being said though, a bonus is that there is a huge amplitude of parking nearby. They have their own little area in front of their restaurant, and then additional parking at the adjacent lot (outside of business hours, it’s relatively empty).
Ah
B Bim Baab has been on my list for a while and I finally got the chance to go! My go to for Korean in Edmonton has been Lee's house but boy have I been missing out.

Walking in, there's a split between Japanese and Korean; apparently owned by the same owner. Greeted almost immediately, we sat on the side beside the booths. Decor is nice and you can tell they took time and attention to detail.
Once seated, menus were given; fifteen minutes later we finally got the attention of one of the waiters to place our order.

Bulgogi soup; so pure, and light definitely a soul food. Had enough flavor but not to the point of dying from salt. Definitely a highlight along with the seafood pancake that had consistent crispy goodness on the bottom with each bite filled with seafood and green onions!
Service is typical, probably bring a Korean to ease in the waiters for better service and refills..
Food wise.. I'll definitely be back to try more items!

The dolsot bibimbap special for lunch is absolutely delicious, pipping hot like it's supposed to be, and comes with all the kimchi and appetizers. Great deal and service! I've been looking for a bibimbap place and looks like I found one!
Bee888
Best of both worlds. This place is fantastic. Best Korean food in town. And now they also serve Japanese food from Kenko. It's the best of both worlds. So delicious!!
Ben
Wow, this is a great restaurant. The food was fantastic and the service was great. We will be back!

Edit February 13, 2016: Service has gone from slow to a point where I'm considering not coming back just on the basis that it's that bad. They are nice people, however the problem comes when you ask them a question in English and not just ordering, and they answer multiple times with something completely different from the question being asked even when you rephrase the question. This, along with our water not being refilled, and twice having to wait over 30 minutes to pay our bill (after receiving it and then eventually unsuccessfully trying to find someone to pay) has left me with a deteriorating perception of the restaurant. I hope it improves soon and that these were isolated incidents., or else I definitely will not be back.

Amazing Korean food. I've heard many good things about B Bim Baab from my Korean friends, and decided to check it out with a friend on Friday night. It's out of the way compared to most major landmarks in Edmonton (in an industrial area), meaning that we were immediately seated around 7pm. The food here definitely did not disappoint, and I would recommend it and it's portion size to anyone. I got the pork bone soup with rice, which was relatively standard to most Korean restaurants that I've been to. However, their Kimchi rice is amazing! I personally don't like Kimchi, but I loved it and couldn't even taste the Kimchi at all. The only problem I had was the service was relatively slow, it took what seemed like quite a while to get our orders/drinks and the bill. But otherwise the service was good, so overall it was a minor issue. The prices were fairly standard for a Korean restaurant. I also really enjoyed the decor of the entrance area. All in all, I enjoyed my experience at B Bim Baab, and will likely be back sometime. Recommended.

Great food, but portion size ehhhh... My friends and i usually go here way back, but noticed the last few times we've gone and even ordered take out the servings has gone from generous to stingy. Even the sidedishes, they rarely come and ask or give you more. I've ordere the beef and chicken galbi, i got 3 strips of beef and also 3 little size of chicken. The beef ain't cheap $20.99 and chicken for $12 something.. so very disappointed. the food is awesome and okay service. not as great as before unfortunately.

Good food!. One of my favourite spots for korean food this place is a must try

Good food, lousy service. Came on a Tuesday night, the place was about half full. The food was great but the service was quite spotty. Took a long time to take our orders, the food came out at different times, we had to flag them down multiple times to get drink refills, and it took about 30 minutes to get our bill after we asked. That being said, the servers were very nice and friendly; they probably just needed more wait staff that night. We would give them a second chance on the merits of their food but if the service stays the same, we'll probably go elsewhere.
Garry_forbes
Fantastic. I tried this restaurant on Sunday. Wow! Super impressed. The service was terrific, although I had to wait a little longer than I would have liked to order. Everything after that was terrific. Nice sized portion, free refills of the side dishes, and the bulgogi was to die for. A simple superb experience. I don't live in Edmonton, so it will be a while before I return. However, I can guarantee I'll be back because I want to enjoy that exact same meal again.
Eats Out 2 Much.
Change of management?. New servers were very pleasant and polite except a bit inattentive; perhaps inexperience? Went to have my usual hot bone soup ( gam ja tang) and was underwhelmed: pot was not as full and was missing the usual enoki mushrooms and other vegetables. Rice had a different texture too. Could this be a different kitchen and management? The maki from the Japanese restaurant next door Kenko on the other hand was very impressive: tasty and exceptionally well plated. Still good but not up to its past. Maybe a one off.

Marvelous memory, again. B-Bim-Baap is a magical oasis in an industrial park setting. My husband and I have a wonderful experience, every time we visit - both cuisine and service. We were so pleased to bring close friends tonight - (they are equally critical of local fare )- left no leftovers. Highly recommended, with something in the menu for all diets
Lulu
Very good. Tasty!!!

Decent food, not so decent service. The food was not bad. Mostly too sweet though and not quite spicy enough for Korean food. While the service was alright in the beginning as the meal went on the worse it got. Mind you we went on a Friday night and the restaurant was not even a quarter full! So I wasn't sure why we had to wait so long for our final order. Yet the biggest problem was not the wait for the food. After we asked for the bill it was handed to us quite speedily but after that the server disappeared. We waited for almost fifteen minutes with our credit card sitting in open view. In the end we had to get up and find our server whom then promptly came with the credit card machine. Wow honestly I thought it generous that we tipped them at all.
E
Not a great experience. Took them a half hour to take our orders, and that was after flagging them down two or three times. Food was served at staggered times. It took more than an hour for them to get all of our meals on the table. The food was good, but it wasn't fun eating 20 minutes after everyone was finished. Go for the good food, but don't come expecting good service.
RM
Based on my experiences eating at many Edmonton Korean joints, I've got to say this place has taken the #1 spot. Great bulgogi and wonderful service. What more do you want?
Big White Guy And Little Asian Girl
Great food and excellent service. The girl that waited on us knew the menu and recommended what is now the best Korean food we have ever had. This place is a must try!!!

Awesome buffet. Pay 10.50 grab your tray and fill it to your hearts content with some of the best korean food you will ever see and taste.

Delicious!. Very good, high quality, and reasonably priced. Will definitely be back!

Very good. Had lunch here for the first time. The buffet looked mediocre, so we had the dolsot b-bim-baab with beef and the dak kang jung . The b-bim was nicely presented, with the bowl piping hot on a wooden board and the egg cooked just right. Could have used more beef, but it tasted great. The dak kang jung was interesting--sort of like sweet chili chicken, but with a peanuty taste.

Somehow this place became my "go to" restaurant. I have been to this restaurant more times than I have been to any other, and it happened without me realizing. It has a way of sneaking up on you since their food is so consistently satisfying, with generous portions, and honestly very reasonable prices. Try the King's Kal-bee if you like meat and want to introduce Korean cuisine to some less adventurous eaters. I love the Toppoki, Jab Chae, Green Onion pancake (which is totally different than Green Onion Cake) and all the free appetizers they give you. I take all my visiting friends here, and I have only had them say good things. Come try it, the staff are friendly too and speak english well, you will find a dish you like!

Mostly yeppers.... Cannot attest to their whole menu because we have only ordered the same dishes the numerous times we ate there; soft tofu kimchee hotpot, beef rib soup and dotsot (stone pot) bbimbaab - but they are enough reasons, along with friendly service, for us to return time and again. our only negative comment is their stinginess and limited selection of kimchee side dishes. As mentioned in reviews below, their prices are slightly on the higher side for korean food and would impact this review negatively had this been a place we eat at everyday; but since we only go once or twice a month or when a yearning for korean hotpot becomes irresistable, the premium does not bother us. never tried their lunch buffets, which seems very aryan-washed catering to the lunch time crowd from the neighbourhood light industrial businesses.

Bbbbbbbimbaap 4 realz. I've had Korean in Edmonton before. But nothing tasted as good as some of the dishes here! I've been here a total of three times. Generally, things that were ordered were the cham pong (spicy seafood soup), bul gal bee (marinated beef ribs), dol sol b bim bap, and kim chee jiggae. These dishes are all excellent! I didn't really like the appetizer dishes of kimchee and bean sprouts, I don't know maybe kind of sour. But definitely will return for the food!

Love love love... The atmosphere is alittle run down.. But the food is to die for.. One of the best meals I had in the city.. Try most dishes on the menu and haven't found one I didn't like!
Nokkcha
Fabulous for large groups! We ordered two of the dinners for six combinations and all 16 people left well fed and raving about the complimentary flavours from dish to dish. Highly recommend for a large group.... But make a reservation!

A favorite. Everytime me and my girlfriend crave korean food, this is our one stop. the prices are a bit on the expensive side compared to other korean places but well worth it. service there is superb and the unlimited kimchi and beansprouts is a nice added bonus. place is a bit tucked away but well worth the find. i definately like there potato noodles and hot pots, one of my favorities. I recommend trying this place out if you are in the neighbourhood and want some korean
Mikebibby2000
Poor experience. Menu says there are free refills on side dishes, but they wanted extra money when our table of 10 wanted more than the 2 they gave us.

I meant...the patron does NOT to pay upon payment of the bill.

-----24 Aug, 2012-----

I was informed that This restaurant does not practice charging GST on top of gratuties. Therefore, I apologize for making this comment in a previous post. I misunderstood after reading another person's post.
However, if anyone is interested regarding gratutity practices and what is legal or what is not within Canada. A mandatory tip is actually not legally binding which means a patron does have to pay upon payment of the bill. You can choose to pay less or none only if warranted.

-----21 Aug, 2012-----

A automatic 15% gratuity is usually reserved for fine dining restaurants, this is not fine dining. And if you think about how the tip is applied, it's down right criminal. If you add the tip on before subtotaling and then charge GST after, you would have collected more than 5% for GST. Now, anybody who has worked in the service industry knows how GST is collected. It is based on your sales only(or in this case what has been ordered). The restaurant the end of day would only technically pay GST on sales only. Then of course, what happens to the extra money that was collected by charging GST on the 15% tip? Hmmm. Not going to the government. If this doesn't bother you and you like the food, you can keep on eating there. But you want to think about how the owners have chosen to operate their business.
Taste Like Chicken
Very Nice. Like the B Bim Baab with beef, short ribs were great, chicken was good. On the other hand, onion cake was different, they have a whole stem of green onion uncut, i personally like them in small pieces. Over all, it was a good experience

...good food.... Small run down place. Interior is very poorly decorated on the inside, but the food will make up for it. They have a buffet, but I opt out of that. Instead I ordered from the menu. So glad I did. Very authentic Korean food. I ordered the Raw Salmon B Bim Baab. It was amazing. There was this sweet tangy hot sauce to go with that dish. Put in as much as you want or less depending on how hot you would like it. Of course the meal came with a small side dish of kim chi and bean sprout salad. The kim chi was a bit salty for me, but the bean sprout salad was good. Would love to come back and try other dishes in the near future!

Run-down but traditional and very decently flavored Korean cuisine. I like this place. Really, I do. Sure things might bit a bit pricey at times and you wonder why it's so expensive at the time of order but when the food comes out all the flavors and seafood and veggies - the lovely ingredients that are not skimped out on, will make you a happy camper. The first time I went there was some compulsory 15% tipping going on with just 2 people but I think the owner was trying to recover the cost from doing a groupon-type deal... is that fair or not? You to judge. The second time I went it was great service and there was no compulsory tipping... Anyways, this is my favorite non-Won-Jung-Gak Korean restaurant in town.

This is the best Korean food in the city. The owner is gracious and values her customers. We have been going for years to this hidden gem. This is a must go to if you like Korean or need a break from MSG

Excellent meal. Went here for the first time last night. My husband has been several times for the lunch buffet, but it was both of our first time for dinner.

We ordered 3 dishes between the 2 of us, and came home with LOTS of leftovers.

We got the dolsot bibimbaap (the difference between the dolsot and the regular is that in the dolsot, it is served in a hot stone bowl vs. a regular bowl). It was delicious. At first it tasted slightly fishy, which I think was due to the addition of seaweed. It was MUCH more flavourful that bibimbaap I've had at other restaurants (which makes sense, since it is their namesake).

We also tried a noodle dish that was called something like "House Special Noodles" or something. In any case, it was thin egg noodles in a spicy sauce with shrimp, mussels and squid. The plate of noodles was heaping, and they had a good spicy flavour. However, the amount of seafood and veggies was a little lacking.

Last but not least, we had the Chef's Special Beef dish, which was the highlight. It was slightly sweet, spicy and sour - delicious!

Before the meal, we were also brought bean sprout salad and kimchee, which were both good.

I'd look forward to coming back.

Great Service!. Went here a few months ago with a group of friends for a large gathering (~16 people), and I had a particular dish (Sam Gyup Sal - I had some Korean friends growing up... :D ) in mind.

I searched the menu, and was disappointed about its absence.

When the waitress came around, I asked her if they served it, and she said no, but they would still be willing to make it for me. Excited, I accepted not bothering to ask how much it cost.

The dish was delicious, along with all the other items we ordered.

When paying, we realized that the cost of custom dish was as expected - not too high or too low.

Overall great experience. One note though, be prepared to leave with your clothes smelling like food. You know what they say though... the smellier the food, the better

Great - want to try more!. Went today - 4 of us - arrived at 12:45 P.M. Very busy - were not recognized by waitress for about 15 minutes - but she was soooo accomodating when she saw us. 3 of us with buffet, 1 off the menu - all 3 for the buffet had finished lunch before the menu item arrived. Great food - service (okay it was busy) lacked (sorry) but I do see it was truly busy. Everyone loved the food, left full, happy and contented - that's what it is all about right? Great time, great food! Will we return? Absolutely! For 3 of us, it was the first time, our friend "INSISTED" we try, and it was worth it!

15% tip??. The mandatory 15% tip is unacceptable....I can understand mandatory tips charge on a large group..say 6 or more ppl..but we are only a table of 2!!!

Excellent Food, Poor service. We visited this restaurant for the first time last night. It was fairly busy for a weeknight and they appeared to only have one server on. We waited some time at the door to be seated. After being seated we waited almost 10 minutes to meet our waitress.

The food arrived promptly and was excellent and large portioned, Fresh and Hot. We had the Beef Bul Go Kee, Chicken Bim Babb , and they were both excellent.

After finishing our meal, we had leftovers, we asked for them to be packed up. Our dirty plates were not taken away, and upon presentation of our bill we were informed there was an automatic 15% gratuity added on.

Although the food was excellent, we will not return as we consider dining out a treat, and expect good service. An automatic 15% tip was NOT acceptable, we tip according to the service we receive, and it was poor.

At the very least it should be mentioned at the presentation of the menu, so we as informed diners can decide whether to stay.

Charged tax on the "included gratuity'. I recently went to B Bim Baab for dinner. The menu noted that the restaurant reserves the right to include a 15% gratuity. When the bill came, the server informed us of the mandatory gratuity. Much to our surprise, the gratuity was calculated on the sum of all the items ordered, then this total (menu items+tip) was subsequently taxed. The food quality and service are good, but won't be coming back due to the way they charge their customers.

Definitely not worth the price!

Bf first took me here almost 3 years ago and we still go. Last time I went was 2 weeks ago. My favorite Korean restaurant in the city so far. Service is good. Wait a bit long but food is always worth it. Sweet and spicy cold buckwheat noodle. Fried sweet chicken with sprinkled peanuts and spicy beef bulgolgi and my favorite dishes there.
Robin
It's my first time to the restaurant and it's also my first time to see a reastaurant with a bill with 15% Tips already included. This is not even legal. I normally give 15% or more of tips depending on the service. This mandatory way of charging tips just makes me fill insulted.

Fairly Decent But Slightly Overpriced. I'm not as keen on Korean food as my wife but since we were visiting her family in Edmonton, we decided to try this restaurant for their classic B Bim Baab dish for $12.50. It was well prepared, tasty and generous in it's variety of ingredients. Our second order was a full plate of Korean beef short ribs which was well cooked but lacked no presentation, i.e. no garnish to add colour to a large dish that cost $17.50. The Seafood Pancakes looked very presentable but when compared to other Korean restaurants my wife has experienced over the years in Vancouver and the USA, this $13.00 dish could be better done, i.e. more like an omelette than an undercooked pancake (not browned enough on bottom to add crunch). Whatever, avoid the buffet if you want an authentic Korean lunch. The buffet offers nothing that is really Korean cuisine. Won't be coming back the next time in town... even if my wife wants Korean food.

My absolute favorite restaurant in Alberta!. Excellent food and service in family run restaurant. This has been my favorite restaurant for eating out with colleagues and friends on my business trip for a couple of years now and have found it be enjoyable. I have tried the bulgogi, BBQ beef ribs, spicy tofu soup, and beef bibimbaab! I absolutely loved everything. The dishes were all so flavorful! I am definitely coming back soon for oh so beautiful lunch buffet! :)

Great hosts for my birthday party.. I had held my birthday celebration at this restaurant. The staff were polite and offered help with dishes and patience with my excited Soju & Bek Se Ju sauced self.

The food was flavourful and the drinks were plentiful.
The feel of the place was very relaxed with little pretense of an upscale eatery. The food spoke for itself and the staff were more than helpful with the service and toleration of my rowdy self.

I would recommend this establishment for its service and food quality.

Delicious food! First time trying authentic Korean cuisine and it wad great. Service was great as well...staff is very friendly!

Good service, small portions.. The staff here are one of the most friendliest I ever met. They answered my questions on how things were prepared and served, attentive as well.

The inside of this place is pretty nice, and with the friendly staff is a bomb. I can get used to a place like this.

I had the bolgalbi, they were kind of oily but they were pretty good.

I also had the bibimbap to go with my spare ribs and it was great, but the way the egg was done threw it off for me > if I come here again next time I'll have to let the staff know how I want the egg done.

Good Food. It was my first time here. I don't know much about Korean food so I wanted to try their buffert to try out different types of food.

The food was good but they only had a few different varieties. They had two soups, two apps and six entrees. They had one chicken dish, a bul-go-gee dish which was good, a noodle dish, a rice dish that frozen vegetable mixed in it and ketchup drizzled on top which was strange. They had a potato curry which was more a soup then an entree. I think they also had a tofu and vegetable dish.

What's up with the decor?!?!. When I stepped foot into the restaurant, it felt like I was thrown back in time to a sleazy 60's hotel restaurant. I couldn't believe it! I could hard concentrate on ordering because I was mesmorized my the ridiculous "decor". Anyways, I order of course B Bim Baab, if the restaurant is named after the dish, you'd be a fool not to try it. The shy waitress, slowly mixed it all together, I had to tell her 3 times more hot sauce. When all was mixed together I dug in! Not the best or worst B Bim Baab I've had it was just ok. There was beef it in which I like, I usually prefer my B Bim Baab with meat. I might come back, but maybe only to laugh at the decor. Ha.

Short ribs were very greasy. Nice decor and very nice fireplace on a cold winter's night.
Wait staff service was very attentive and helpful. Kitchen seemed slower than other Korean restaurants I frequent.

In Korean restaurants I compare ribs and my favorite veggie dish from one place to the next. The flavour of the beef short ribs here was OK but not the greatest...BUT the fat and amount of grissle on the ribs we got was a bit much.

The Fried Dofu with Veggies was excellent!...nice flavour and lots of fresh veggies... This dish is a keeper!

Rice serving was small.

According to the menu the two dishes we ordered should each have come with bean sprout salad and kim chee. We ended up splitting one small order of each of these salads between the two of us..... and the rice took forever to come so we waited as we prefer to have the salads with our rice.

Not bad at all but certainly out of the way so unless I am in the area it is unlikely that I would be a regular customer.

Very kind staff; great food for great price. If I'm on a business trip, I may as well do what I can to eat well (this includes healthy and varied food), and all the better if I can do it for a good price. This fit the bill.

I got the marinated beef dulsot b-bim-bap (pardon spelling errors) with some green tea. It came with a just-nicely-hot kimchee side dish, and I passed on the sprout salad (stomach doesn't always appreciate bean sprouts). The green tea was nice, but I also saw roasted barley tea on the menu and when I inquired, the waitress was all too happy to bring me a pot to try for free (along with offering an explanation of its use in Korean culture). It was lovely; you could just subtly taste the sweetness of the barley.

The b-bim-bap (first time I have it) was great. A big hearty bowl of rice, vegetables, beef, an egg (raw), soy brean sprouts (they did this upon hearing that I have trouble with regular bean sprouts, which I was told was mung bean sprouts)... and of course, I got a bit of hot sauce which she offered to mix in (it's flavourful, not "burning hot"). The rice was crispy too from the hot stone bowl - nice touch. It was filling, and for less than $15 for this and the kimchee, it was a good deal in my books.

The place is simple - don't expect cushy chairs (they're a bit stiff) - but expect good food with friendly service.

Great Experience. This out of the way place is a great find. The staff is prompt and very friendly. Our waitress was very helpful, she answered so many of our questions (I had never heard of most of the dishes) and assisted us to make our selections. The food was fantastic! We especially enjoyed the traditional B Bim Baab in the hot stone bowl. We have been back a few times and have always had a great experience!

Disappointed. I came here after looking at the votes and reviews from Urbanspoon.

The service was normal, I can probably get this from any other restaurant. Decor was amazing, they could lighten up the place a bit though. Seating was comfortable and had good spacing.

The food was average. My wife's cooking is better than this. I ate more delicious food from other restaurants, and the portions were small compared to my previous outings.

I would rate this place a 6-7 out of 10.

Mehh. We voted to go Korean after we, (my paintball team) have been frequenting Boston PIzzas lately. Being sick of the same old same old we all voted here.
I've known about this place for a while, I have gone in the past before they changed their name to Bi-bim bap, I been here when they had their first name (Bi-bim bap is the 3rd)
Nothings changed.

First the restaurant itself:
What the hell? I haven't been here in a while and its changed into a bar? Gloomy and dark, I thought it was a bar not a restaurant. I actually went out side to check the name of the building before going back in.

Good to know that the thousands of dollars they spent decorating and renovating this place worked out, but seriously change the lights. Other than the lights they did a pretty good job in making this place look more up-to-date.

Food:
I ordered the Soft tofu soup and an extra bowl of rice.
My teammates ordered the jab-chae, bul-galbi, gamjatang (which is the potato hotpot) bul-gogi and a couple bi-bim-baps to pass around.
Soft tofu was mine and mine only, this is the soup I've been in love with since the age of 13-14.
The sheer amount of nutrients from the tofu was enough to tide me over, but the fact that its spicy (hell yeah) and has seafood (one of my favorites) its one of the best dishes I'd recommend.

Now I been to many restaurants and it differs on how its presented and made. The one from this particular restaurant, I was kinda disappointed.

The soup itself was kind of... watery and plain, it didn't have the spicy taste that I usually find in this dish. The amount of tofu was great, the amount of seafood not so great - usually the places I go to have alot more in it than here.
My favorite dish presented in this fashion? = big NO NO. But I finished it anyway, I never waste food and its disrespectful.

Bul-go-gi: Ehh... this is like one of the most common dishes, can't comment much on this. Its good?

Bul-galbi: This is also one of my favorite dishes. The taste of this is different, as the actual taste if more... plain? And the texture of this is hard. I don't think this place pounds the meat like you're suppose to.
None the less its okay, though next time I'd pass on it.

Gamjatang: The amount we got raised my eyebrows, usually 'tang' in Korean means a large soup or a hotpot, something similar like "nabe" in Japan. I found that this was lacking the pork that goes into it, and it didnt sit well with me when I found a potato that had odd dark marks on it. The soup was okay but I wouldn't recommend this.

Jab-chae: The skinny clear noodles with vegetables mixed in. This was pretty good, as I'm also a big fan of vegetables it had an abundant amount of both. Big recommend here.

Bi-bimbap: OH HERE IT IS THE DISH THATS THEIR SPECIALTY. While I didn't have much of this, it changed alot from the times I've had it in the past.
I was kinda full from my hotpot and the rice, so I decided to have a tad bit of this. The amount of hotsauce (aka gochujang) in it was not the amount that I wanted but it was good none the less.

Presentation: there seems to be a couple more vegetables in here than when I had it years ago. Looks great too.

The taste, well I can't really say much about this. While its GOOD its JUST bi-bim bap. This is one of the most common dishes in Korea, and I've had it many times in my life.

Now kinda off-topic, I noticed a couple near us had ordered this as well (two bi-bim baps and some other stuff) but they ate it raw. WITHOUT the hot sauce. I can understand that people don't want to eat spicy food or anything in general, but to eat bi-bim bap without the hot sauce is like, something you never do. Just what that couple tasted I'm not sure, I can tell you that I did try it once just to see how it was : it was crap. While its more flavorful than normal white rice its actually too boring without it.

So to you all who order this - USE THE SAUCE TO EXPERIENCE THE FULL TASTE OF THE BI-BIM BAP.

My rate on this place? I'd go back again but its not for the food, it would be for the place to chill.

Love the B-Bim-Baab. Love this place, the best Dolsot B-Bim-Baab I have ever had, hands down. The service and ambiance was very good as well. Unfortunately it is a little off the main drag but it is well worth the trip a few blocks up from 34th Ave.

Overall B Bim Baab was everything I recalled from my previous visits: a high quality Korean restaurant delivering solid authentic dishes with large portions. I am slightly disappointed at the continued rise of pricing here but am grateful that the quality of the food has not suffered over the last year. While the location might be prohibitive for some, I wholesomely recommend B Bim Baab for anyone looking for solid Korean in Edmonton.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to B-Bim-Baab. This trip was my third visit and it still has that Korean homey, comfort food style to it. The food is good but some dishes are definitely on the pricier side, especially if you compare to other Korean restaurants nearby. Seriously, are they all on the south side??? Bul Go Gi House, Coco Deep Fried Chicken, Don Day, Lee House, Mama Lee’s Kitchen, Wing Chicx, (technically Lee House Korean BBQ is in Chinatown). Sorry, Ginseng Restaurant and Korean BBQ House, there’s no urgency to try you out, not when it’s over $30 for mediocre AYCE Korean BBQ.

Overall, B-Bim-Baab = 9.5/10 (the seafood in the chaam pong was disappointing). But I will be back here again!!!

Mandus! I love dumplings! I'm sure the majority of the Asian population love dumplings as well. They are just so delicious, with a yummy meat and vegetable filling. The mandus were shaped differently compared to Chinese dumplings and were steamed. Unfortunately, the dumpling skins were under cook/raw and it was hard to chew. Especially the parts of the dumplings where the skin was thicker? But the inside filling was satisfying. Juicy, tender and flavorful blend of minced pork and vegetables.

We had a taste of Korean BBQ with their spare ribs. These 3 ribs came to 17.99 ! wow super expensive. Good thing they tasted awesome, had awesome seasoning and just had the right amount of fat on them. Though I guess it wasn't very lady like to get all the meat off the bones.

It was a cute place.. pretty dim lit but was very red-toned in there... good luck maybe? I didn't quite care for this Kim Chi, something was off about it, however the bean sprouts were delicious! Refills were free !

I will definitely return to this restaurant in the future to try out some other dishes. They have many unique dishes on their menu that cannot be found elsewhere in the city too! For four people, the meal came out to $15 per person including tax, so it was definitely an affordable meal too!

I can't even count the number of times I've been to B-Bim-Baab in the short three months I have been in Edmonton. The main reason is that the restaurant is just around the corner from my old workplace. And of course the authentic Korean dishes are part of the reason as well. On my first visit, I ordered the restaurant's namesake — the signature bi-bim-baab ($8.99). It was a rice bowl with assorted veggies, a raw egg and sweet-spicy Korean hot sauce. The portion was a bit big for me, but I still managed to finish it. While I enjoyed the fresh and crunchy veggies with the tasty sauce, I didn't like the fact that the rice was just barely warm instead of hot. I think I should have ordered the dolsot bi-bim-baab instead, which is the same thing served in a hot stone bowl. All entrees are served with banchan, the Korean term for traditional side dishes. The banchan included are always kimchi and bean sprouts. The dak bulgogi (Korean BBQ chicken) ($15.99) is my absolute favourite dish here.
