Review Passion De France - Edmonton

Kirk Dewhurst
French pastries at a reasonable price. It’s a small place but that’s not a problem because the quality is excellent. Love the individual pies and the Maple butter tart. The ambiance is great and the staff is friendly and courteous. This is a hidden gem right in the heart of Alberta Ave. You have to visit for the great deserts and coffee. There is also an excellent selection of middle eastern pastries.

This place is amazing, the desserts are very affordable and delicious very peaceful place to go for a date. the espresso served here is very complimentary to the desserts. They sell homemade Jam and even Carmel popcorn!

Delightful little bake shop around the corner... literally! Chicken pie was perfectly flaky and seasoned, while the Chocolate Almond pastry was delicately balanced. You can taste the TLC.

A cozy french inspired bakery located on Alberta Avenue community, a culturally rich and vibrant area of Edmonton. They have quite a selection early in the day but by afternoon your choices are limited. So best to go early if you want an expansive menu. The choices I purchased were all very tasty. My mother who is quite a baker herself really enjoyed the almond croissant and the truffles (also my favourites). The white chocolate coconut truffles are reminiscent of Ferrero Raffaello but way better. The almond croissant was the perfect balance of flaky, moist and chewy. I had high hopes for the Flan Normand or pâte brisée but unfortunately i was not a fan (Maybe I was expecting it to be more of a proper pâte brisée) The custard tasted overcooked and that strong egg taste really sticks out , which is unfortunate cause every other element of the flan normand was ok. Its in a fantastic location in front of a Park. I can definitely see myself going back here in warmer weather and trying out the other items on their menu. Nice small place hidden in the side street with an assortment of pastries and foods. I ended up getting a random assortment of goods to see what they would be like. Overall it was decent tasting. They take credit debit and have lunch foods available. May check out their other foods at a later time.

I have come to this little nook in my travels a handful of times and I have enjoyed every visit. It is nice to have a taste of France in my backyard. The treats offer me a new delight every time I am here, satisfying my inner adventurer with such wonderful flavors and experiences. With most of the items being in house made, it is nice to support a unique bakery in my community. The customer service is pleasant and cheerful and they have been very accommodating with me with evert visit. Like all places there is room for improvement. Some of the chairs, albeit full of character, can me made to be more comfortable as they have seen better days. But all in all a very nice treat for me and I hope for your travels too.

I adore this restaurant! They serve decent dishes, they have a nice menu, The cook in that place is a specialist, I love very much tasting all their food. The food is always fresh and tasty, the service towards the guests is very good too. I often go to this place and I was never unhappy. I highly recommend it.

A small tucked away family bakery. You can see that the owners tried really hard to make it a French cafe, and it's so charming inside. Friendly staff as well The prices are pretty good, the croissants were okay. I'm sure I've been watching too many baking shows but the lamination wasn't there for the the croissants (Great British Baking Show anyone?). Same for the pain au chocolat. One last thing is I was expecting the smell of baking, of butter and decadence, and it wasn't there. It smelled like flowers, it cleanser but not baking.

This used to be the best place in town back when the previous chef was there. Now it's awful! No customer service whatsoever, food tastes awful, place is dirty. Makes u wonder what's going on in the kitchen. Would not recommend it to my dog!!

Just found this place while wandering the Alberta Avenue Pop-Up Market. Had the blueberry cheesecake and sampled a couple other treats. Fabulous quaint French bakery with authentic European desserts as well as a light lunch menu, will definitely come back! This just makes 118 Ave better!

The best place for sweets not found anywhere else in Edmonton

Just dropped in the other day right before closing and the girl working there was so sweet and kind! Let us in even though she was closing and didn't rush us at all. The macaroons were AMAZING, the best I've had. Can't wait to go back for more :)

What a beautiful and delicious gem of a bakery. I heard about this place in a food blog and decided to check it out myself with a friend. We tried the Lorraine Quiche and the pear pie. Both were absolutely mouth watering delicious. The cappuccino and latte were equally delightful and the service was excellent!

Love the pastries here and the prices are reasonable. The caramel nut tart could use a quick heat up before serving so that it's not that hard. I hope to see more knock knacks and interesting things deco the seating space in the future :)

Really nice little place for Alberta Ave which I think everyone should check out and support! The quiche is delicious and the macaroons were also delightful. A friend and myself tried a variety of flavors and some of our favorites were the raspberry, vanilla, and coffee flavors. The coconut vanilla truffle was also fantastic. This is a great little addition to Alberta Ave :)

I had a business lunch catered by Passion De France. The entire team was impressed. The food was delectable. Great service too. I'm looking forward to trying more of their menu.

I have recently discovered the Macarons are not made in house. Most items on the menu are from the original Pastry Chef that came from Dubai having trained in France...sadly they aren’t anywhere as good as they once were. I believe this is due to the departure of said Chef. She has apparently opened her own place. The journal did an article last year on her. I walked into her place and said these look just like stuff at PDF... she told me why. I now go there amongst others...but I can’t return to Passion de France as the quality has really suffered. My first visit was so good. The second I brought my Mom we ordered a selection of things...not great nor was my latte. Tried twice more and with the plethora of new bakeries opening
I will not come back.

I've been on a patisserie hunt recently - especially hole-in-the-wall, hidden gem types - and I decided to give Passion de France a try.
It's on the east side of 118th Ave just between 97 and 82nd St. Definitely wouldn't have noticed this patisserie there but it's not hard to find if you're purposely looking for it.
I went in quite early, about 10am, and there was nobody inside. There was a decent amount of pastry selections on the shelf.
I got the lemon meringue tart, lorraine quiche, coffee macaron, and pain au chocolat to bring home. The lemon meringue tart was really good. It's sour, had a very strong lemon taste, and I liked how the filling was not too soft and runny. I've tried some lemon meringue tarts in the past which would get so messy to eat after the first bite because they're so runny.
I didn't try the lorraine quiche but my bf said that it's really good and tastes similar to The Pie Hole's quiche which I absolutely loved.
Honestly, I didn't have any expectations for the macaron because I saw that their macarons are displayed in a plastic packaging (refer to pictures) - as if they're not made in store (I don't know if they are or not). However when I had a bite of it I was impressed by the flavour and how soft it was. It was not stale nor hard, however it's definitely not the best (not as good as Duchess). The coffee flavour is very strong and prominent. I'd guess their other macaron flavours are the same.
The pain au chocolat was really good, just as you would expect it to be. It's not the best pain au chocolat I've tried but it still meets my expectations of what it should be.
Would I go back? Probably, but I'm not in a rush to do so.

Better than most bakeries but definitely not a good one of France quality. The had their almond croissant in a cooler. Made the croissant soggy.

Stopped by this quaint bakery for a treat to take home. It was such a difficult choice because of the variety of selections available! My mother picked the red fruit tart and I decided to have the pistachio chocolate cake. The tart was a custard with raspberries, cherries and blueberries in a rich butter pastry. The raspberries had a tartness that balanced the sweetness of the other fruits perfectly . The elegant pistachio cake had a delicious pairing of nut and dark chocolate separated by soft layers of cake and cream...a perfect choice for someone who doesn't want an overly sweet dessert. Also available were a multitude of very beautiful and tasty looking pastries, cookies, and several lunch time options like sandwiches, soup, quiche and crepes. I saw the chef busy in the kitchen and from reading a newspaper article about the shop know that she had difficulty sourcing halal and kosher baking items. In a previous review it was suggested that items were not baked in house, if this is the case I can only assume it was from sourcing issues from early days after first opening. The staff were pleasant and helpfully and gave some great suggestions that helped us make our final choices. We will definitely be visiting again and hopefully enjoying the patio area once it is set up.

Amazing Quiche (get the chicken mushroom quiche!), the Macarons were not too sweet, great apple crumble. You can't go wrong with this place. I was pleasantly surprised. This place got me hooked!

Tried it for the first time recently and LOVED the almond croissant. It was amazing and the staff were lovely.

Will deinitely be back to try more treats!
You've Got To Be Kidding
You have to try this place!. We had the triple chocolate torte and some macarons and they were all out of this world. I also had an americano with my desserts and it was probably the best americano I've tasted.
Amazing.
The setting is really lovely too. Nestled on 86 st., right across from Eastwood park, the patio will be really pleasant in the summer. My daughter has decided to come here for her birthday and I am looking forward to being a regular here.

I was really excited to try the macarons, bought one of every flavour, just to find out they don't even make them, they are not good at all.

The macarons though.... They're not fresh or even made in store. My sister and I got suspicious after seeing the same ones at the petite bakery in WEM and found out that they're not even made in Canada, let alone in this particular bakery Once I figured that out the place just didn't seem right anymore. I forgave her for using her fingers to pick up my pastries and cookies, but now the place just seems tainted. The pistachio cake was really good, but I'm beginning to wonder whether that was made in house or was it made elsewhere, frozen, and brought in. My advice? Just go to Duchess.

PLEASE use TONGS!. I went to Passion de France today and picked up 4 pastries. The pastries themselves weren't bad (although the texture of the almond pain au chocolate was more bread-like), but I can't get past the fact that the person helping me used her hands to grab my pastries. Eventhough she was also handling money and there were tongs right in front of her. We ended up cutting off the majority of the pastries and ate just the middle bits.

I won't be back just for this reason. Too bad.

Decadent pastries. I read about this place in the local paper and decided to try it out. I purchased a variety of pastries, a coconut truffle and a latte. The pastries were fresh and has lovely texture and flavour and the truffle was incredible. I also ordered a latte to go and it had a perfect blend of coffee strength and milk.
The service was quick and with a friendly smile.
A very nice addition to the Avenue and I am looking forward to my next visit.

Lacking in quality. I review bakeries, so I have eaten a lot of croissants, pastries...you name it. I bought about 15 items when I came here on the weekend so as to fairly assess quality, flavour, and price. 3 of these items passed my checks, they were tasty, fresh, and fairly priced as to ingredients and labour involved in making them. The other 12 were at most sub-par. I was really disappointed with this place and won't be back.

Passion De France opened quietly in early December. One isn't likely to drive by it, for this tiny house of baked goods is set back from the main avenue by at least half a block, and separated from the street from a patio's worth of space. Though the front walk is buttressed by heaving snowdrifts now, one can imagine a smart set of patio furniture and umbrellas nodding like heavy-headed sunflowers in the breeze once the northern hemisphere turns back towards the light. Inside, a tidy and efficient space, dressed in cool mint green and white, breathes the beguiling scent of fresh baking, resplendent in rich butter and sighing with dark chocolate and spices. The display cooler is not yet full, though the menu promises a smattering of sandwiches, quiche and soup. Make no mistake, though; I've come for the baking. Specifically - croissants and macarons. Though I must confess to have never been in Paris (neither the French nor Ontarian locals, though I suspect the latter holds to a different standard of baked goods), a journeyman baker once explained to me that a real croissant - a real one and not the questionable supermarket variety - ought to make a mess when eaten. For all those glorious strata of butter, so lovingly layered throughout the dough, transform via some sort of culinary alchemy into a shattering mess. Yes, one bite ought to send croissant shards e
