I went with a friend, she was running late, but my server was amazing, was super patient and still kept checking up on me, until my friend showed. The service was fantastic, the food and drinks superb and it really does make all the difference when your server genuinely cares and is on top of things. I'd recommend this place to anyone.
The place, food and our server are awesome. They packed my "leftover" neatly abd even adding dip and sauces. It's my second time and both experience was excellent.

One of the best restaurants of been to. Atmosphere was great, service was great, and I've never like food as much as I did tonight, and I'm a picky person.
Went here for a friend’s birthday it was a nice atmosphere. The staff were nice and attentive. The food was cooked to my liking and nice and hot no complaints here. I wish there were a bit more of a selection but that is all I could say.
I went to S&M today looking so forward to ordering the tomato bacon bisque. Imagine my utter dismay finding out they have REMOVED it from their new menu. Omg! That was the absolute best ever!! I ended up with a chicken burger which was good, but not good enough to bring me back (like the bisque always did). Bad move State and Main.
Came here for a quick bite after volleyball. It wasn't too busy, making the wait for the food seem long. But I was in and out in about an hour. Sat in the bar, so service was good. Think of this place as an "upscale" Original Joe's. The menu ans concept of two sides with mains is similar. I ordered the Pacific noodle bowl which was flavoured in Thai spices. Lots of vegetables, shrimp, and chicken to go with a good portion of rice noodles. Surprisingly good. I would come here after playing rec league sports if I needed a place to quickly eat.
Great location conveniently access just off whitemud. Downside is that no reservation if you are planning to have a group of people there. Food was alright. Environment setup is comfy
Great atmosphere and staff. My husband and I always sit up at the bar during the casual Saturday lunch hours to order our drinks and food. We are always treated with such respect and every time we get served, the server or bartender go above and beyond to make sure we have a great experience.

State and main contains lots of relaxing features. One of those is the art work. The art is located on the walls. The art work is of a city by an artist who won over ten awards. The service in state and main is fast the food comes in two seconds. State and main is like a castle. The menu in state and main is the size of a 7 ft. tall man, but it is easy to choose from. State and main is futuristic.
In the restaurant state and main there is a variety of city artwork on the walls. The city contains the CN tower and the dazzling Eiffel tower. The city artwork go’s on and on and on till the window. It is as pretty as the world on top of the shining sun. Hanging above the table is stained glass lights each shines a reflection of the shade on the table. Then the table is a faded color and it looks spectacular. The chairs are tall and are made of iron and leather there is lever that adjusts the seats to your comfort. State and main can blow! Your mind.
The service in a restaurant is very important. In State and Main the waiters are interactive and talk to you. The service is very friendly. They have manners and stand tall every shift. The food comes quickly and tastes extremely good. Even if allot is ordered it still comes quickly. The food in state and main is to die for. It moves fluently with taste buds. Great location, just off the southgate train station. Good ambience. Love the Dragon boat lettuce wrap. The serving size was good. Ok service.
The Alberta Bison Burger contained lean ground bison, served on a butter grilled brioche bun with bacon ketchup, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickle, and melted cheddar cheese. It was a sight to behold! It was very big and definitely required two hands to pick up to eat. Unfortunately, I found that the bison patty itself was very thin.
Decent food but really great service. The beer selection is pretty limited but diverse. Seems worthy of another visit, plus the proximity to transit is a nice bonus.
I come here all the time, I love the atmosphere and the interior! Service is good usually, but can be very slow sometimes. I come here when I don't really have a craving for anything particular. The location is what gets me coming the most I think; if I come for lunch here it's so convenient to shop around after if I've got time or I can stop by after some shopping at the mall before heading home. I like their appetizers and cocktails, not too keen on their mains.
I had the fish and chips and was pleasantly surprised. I also love any place that has a good non alcoholic margarita. I would go again just to have fish and margaritas.
I've been here about 5 times since it opening and I've been pleased with the consistency of the product. The staff are polished and the food has been high quality. What makes this brand unique is their side dishes, you get to select 2 options and they are all unique options. The drink menu is good, but the prices are a little on the high side. Would consider coming here more frequently if the drink prices were lower.

Food is always really good but service needs a bit of work. Food came out and they must think it's really good and no need to comeback to ask how things are going, need more drinks etc. waitress was pleasant enough just need to be a bit more attentive.
Same ol'. Service has been good the two times we had lunch and the food is nothing to write home about but ok nonetheless. I guess my topic of contention is their menu is identical to the menu at Original Joes. Does management not have the creative wit about them to provide different items on either menu?? Any old Joe can copy a menu and put a different restaurant name on it! Come on management show us you can break away from the same old mold!
Good Food & Priced Right. Popped in on a Friday evening and had the Wedge Salad and Jalapeno Mac n' Cheese with Chorizo Sausage. Was not disappointed and will go back again!
Washed it all down withe a Shave and a Haircut drink. Excellent!
Good brunch. Wanted to go here to try out the banana bread French toast. was not disappointed. will have to try something off their regular menu next time.

Hit and Miss...but still good. First of all, shout out to my server Andrew for great service last night, thoroughly impressed with what he did for us. Located beside Southgate, it's my go-to restaurant when I'm in the area or hungry coming from the LRT and not wanting food court food. Arriving around 8pm on a Saturday night, there was no line and we were immediately seated. My friend and I, both very hungry, ordered the pretzel sticks, spicy tuna tartare, and lettuce wraps for appetizers, and I had the pulled pork burger with fries/dill dip and Caesar salad as sides, while my friend had the rocket salad. Both the pretzel sticks and lettuce wraps were delicious, however I didn't find the spicy tuna tartare to be as good, I couldn't taste the tuna at all and the rice felt too thick. The pulled pork burger was ok, definitely not as good as their Main Burger though. The Caesar salad was average at best, however their fries with dill dip are definitely my favourite part of the menu when coming here. My friend said her salad was good, and being able to have the dressing along the side to control how much you put on is a definite bonus. The food overall is hit and miss, but once you find the right food this place is a great place to eat when you're nearby Southgate and looking to avoid the food court!

State & Main is a chain of Original Joes. so most of the menu is the same! This was my second experience at this restaurant! My first experience was awesome!! This time I Was there with my grandmother. We were seated almost immediately. But then we waited 40 mins before a server from a different section asked if anybody has come by yet. He took our drink order and said someone will be right with us. A manager returned with our drinks and explained that there was confusion of which server the table belonged too... He apologized took our order and said "joe" will be looking after us. We then waited another Half hour for our food which was fine because they were pretty busy. "Joe" dropped off our food and filled up my water once...which is understanding seeing how busy he was entertaining the table beside us (including sitting down on the long bench chatting with them) seemed like he may have been bitter from gettin told we were his responsibility!
Anyways Food was amazing!! When we were done another manager came to our table acknowledged they screwed up earlier an apologized. Then said he will be taking care of the entire bill!
Even though the bill was probably $30 it was very courteous for the manager to do that! I am blown away that there are still people in the service industry that under stand that there is always a way to go above and beyond to make things right! I will return to this restaurant and I will be telling everybody how what seemed like a terrible experience turned into a positive one!!
Food was good. You can tell they are owned by original joes there are similar themes on the menu...
A few feedback notes: French onion soup, good flavour, needs a bit more broth, or a little less bread... Calamari was yummy, not boring flavour, but the sauce needs to be on the side, it was soggy under the sauce... But overall, good place to grab a bite.
Upscale pub food. We stopped in at State & Main's for lunch after passing by it a few times on the LRT.
Atmosphere is really nice - similar to a Joey's, Moxie's or Earl's. Lots of TVs in the bar where we could watch the football. Great service - our server was attentive, but not intrusive. Looks like they have a large patio that would be nice in the summer.
Menu is a dead rip-off of Original Joe's - right down to the wording on the fish and chips and the (delicious!) dill dip. Definitely not complaining though because we love OJ's, but we were just surprised to see such a similar menu - I didn't realize that they were a sister company. They do have some different items, but essentially if you like OJ's then you'll like this place too.
We'll definitely be back.

We were excited to have a new restaurant on the southside and decided to try State &Main last night to celebrate my sister in law's birthday. The wait was a little long but it was a Friday night. They have a great system for keeping you informed of how much longer your wait will be. You give them your cell number and they will call you when your table is ready, allowing you to browse at Southgate while you are waiting. Yiu cancheck in on your phone to see where you are in the queue.
We were seated in the bar at a nice spacious table. It was a little loud so if you prefer a quieter setting let the hostess know you would prefer not to be seated in the bar. Our waitress was fantadtic. Attentive but not overly intrusive. She was on top of drink refills which the guys appreciated. We started with the warm soft breadsticks with spicy brown mustard.they were yummy! Butter, soft, salty and warm!
We ordered the steak sandwich, the grilled cheeseburger, the buffalo chicken sandwhich and the grilled chicken sandwhich. All come with a choice of 2 sides, and there is a great selection available, from fries, to quinoa saladcto jalapeno cheddar mashed potatoes. We had the fries and gravy, caesar salad, cornbread and jalapeno cheddar mashed potatoes. All were very good...the mashed potatoes were amazing! I could have eaten a big bowl of them! The bugers and sandwhiches were all delicious and everyone said they would order them again. You get a very generous amount of food for reasonable prices. We were too full for dessert...next time! We will definitely be going back to try out the rest of the varied and yummy sounding menu.
Perfect. Tried State & Main yesterday and impressed with the decor, food & service. Had the steak sandwich which was one of the better ones I've had at this price. It came with a good choice of sides. I chose the bacon & tomato soup, fries & gravy, all of which was very tasty! We will be back!
User reviews. Five of us visited State & Main recently and just shortly after it opened. We had brunch on Saturday morning. The selection was excellent and everyone was very pleased with what they ordered. The portion sizes were just right and larger than you wold expect for the prices. The location at the ouside of Southgate Mall is very handy. We will be back.
I've been to State & Main a few times before and it's very similar to Original Joe's, but more modernized. It shares a few similar menu items with Original Joe's since both restaurant chains are owned by the same franchise group. I prefer going to State & Main over Original Joe's though because I like its atmosphere and menu better. I find that State & Main has more items to choose from, and options that have a twist on them such as the Jalapeno Mac & Cheese.
