Enjoyed an amazing dinner here. Loved all the different courses offered, very small portions given but nonetheless every dish came out plated beautifully and delicious! It’s on the pricier side. A place worth checking out with it’s amazing chef’s and exceptional drink menu. Service was quick and fast, our waitress was very knowledgeable and explained the menu and options for us.Unfortunately didn’t take any pictures which I wish I would have, will have to come back to try out this lovely restaurant again!
Went into this cute little joint today. First impressions are that it's small and hot! If they had air conditioning.. it wasn't on. I left with all my clothes sticking to me. We ordered the fresh pasta, mushroom "steak" and gnocchi, popcorn chicken, and carrot cake French toast with London fog ice cream for dessert. The fresh pasta was good but it wasn't anything special. It came with a tomato sauce a little bit of some sort of cheese. It was pretty simple and lacked flavour. The mushroom "steak" with gnocchi, which is a portobello mushroom and contains no steak, was absolutely incredible. So so good. It was bursting with flavour and made us same "mmm" with every bite. The popcorn chicken was meh. It kinda tastes like a fried chicken ball you would get at a Chinese food restaurant. We got the dill sauce to go with the popcorn chicken and the sauce was really good. Lastly, the carrot cake French toast with London fog ice cream was incredible. The French toast was soft and flavourful, and the ice cream was so good I could have ate a whole bowl of it. Together, it was a magical duo. The service was very good as well, and I always had water in my class. Overall, I would definatly recommend north 53.
The brunch game in Edmonton is blowing up and I am so glad. Lazy unproductive Sunday with grumbling stomachs led to the decision of trying the new brunch menu at North 53.
Having been wanting to try North for quite some time now, it was a great opportunity to see the space during the day!
Offering a more casual atmosphere, dinner menu is meant to be shared within your dining partners while they also have an extensive drink menu. (Also had one for brunch)(no shame in drinking at 11am on a sunday) Inside is very spacious, looking to be more narrow than wide. The stretched bar is pretty impressive, running from the entrance to the back squeezing in a lot more bar seatings. North also has the most eye catching color scheme I’ve seen in awhile, the detail mixes seamlessly with grey tiled backsplash transitioning to wood than more of a sophisticated glossy black up on the ceiling. Playing with both color and texture. Totally in love with the design.
Service was off and on, she seemed to be the only server and was responsible for seating and hosting each tables. Mind you, we got there around 1130 and there was only 3 other tables and she still asked if we had a reservation. Probably safe to say it’s usually busy and probably a good idea to make a reservation in advance. She was friendly though and no complaints since the food came out pretty quickly.
Fried Chicken and Sweet Grits - ($11) - 3/5 - Not the best fried chicken I’ve ever tasted, but I’ll give props on the crispness of the skin, and the portion. Honestly, the chicken just needed more seasoning, was very bland. The grits on the other hand was delicious, creamy and rich with meaty bites of sausage, definition of comfort food is right.
Pork and Oats - ($14) - 4/5 - I only got a bite of this but the pork belly tasted sooo good. The pork belly had a very strong flavor from the maple soy sauce marinade topped with a gorgeous color, great presentation.
Old Bay Cheddar Biscuit - ($2) - ⅖ - Added this since I was dreaming of the biscuits from red lobster. Sadly enough, the half of the biscuit I had was disappointing to say the least. Firm browned exterior, somewhat flakey interior but not a lot of flavor going on, relying mostly on the glop of butter.
Wasn’t blown away with the dishes from brunch but i’m not deterred!
Will not be back for brunch, but this visit has bumped up my anticipation for dinner at North 53.
I was extremely impressed with everything here and not just because I'm the biggest sucker for the smoky wood stove smell. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and timely. The drinks were creative and delicious, the ambience was quiet enough to have a conversation but loud enough to hear some rad music. And also there were no tv's! Can't wait to go back!
Love the interior! This place has such a cool vibe and their drink menu is awesome. My party and I tried several of their cocktails and every single one was delicious! The food was so-so... each dish was just missing something. The bulghogi game hen had some good components - the hen was delicious, the crispy mushrooms were good too, but the kim chi pancakes were very soggy from the sauce, a maple gojujang sauce (for those that don't know, gojujang is a Korean hot pepper paste). The sauce was okay. I just think the whole dish could have been executed better. The kibbeh meatballs tasted overwhelmingly like cumin, just not good... and I typically like cumin. I will be back though, I would like to try their other menu items!
I'll be honest - when I first glanced at the menu, I wasn't sure there would be anything that I would really like. My husband, who usually is a meat and potatoes kind of guy, also was skeptical. Let's just say the dishes blew our minds! We ordered several things we usually wouldn't eat, and they were so delicious! The portion sizes are pretty generous - we had four of us when we went and ordered about six dishes, and we were stuffed by the end of it. The only thing I would "complain" about is that they waitress didn't bring fresh plates and cutlery throughout the service - some of the tastes from the other dishes didn't mesh well together, so we did have to ask for clean plate and utensils, but other than that, I would highly recommend North 53 to anyone.
I've only been here once, though North 53 has been open for a few years, but I had a pretty decent experience overall. For starters, I appreciated the funky decor-it's very hip and modern, which is what one would expect of a restaurant located in Glenora. Now, I have always adored the Glenora location, it has an awesome trendy feel paired with the fact that it is a well-known, historically old-school Edmonton neighbourhood. There are some really unique little restaurants here that I thoroughly enjoy visiting, and North 53 was definitely one of them.
That's enough gushing for now though, as let's get to some main points of importance. Location-wise, while it looks great and all-it is inconvenient as hell when it comes to parking in Glenora. For one thing it's hard enough finding parking to begin with in the area at all. This restaurant is really no exception, and let's face it-no one likes paying for parking if they don't have to. In this area though, you have to, because this is one of the worst places in the city for those damn parking ticket people to congregate with absolutely nothing better to do that everyone despises.
I'm getting off topic here though with my ranting.. To get back on track here, the food and drinks on the menus were different. Not bad different, just weird different-like you have to try it at least once kind of different, because it sounds strangely good, but also just.. odd. Apparently they change up the menus often too, so they try to keep things new to prevent people from getting bored. Which was all pretty great, but my biggest complaint was prices. While everything I tried was pretty tasty-I didn't really find the portion sizes worth the price. Nor did I find the restaurant really fancy enough to excuse the fairly high cost of everything, especially since the restaurant is really more pub-style that stresses they are "casual." I found that a bit contradictory, but flavour-wise everything was high-quality and well-made.
It is a bit crowded inside, as the place is pretty small so you are seated quite close to other tables in a squishy kind of way. I am not overly fond of that, but I enjoy that the restaurant only allows minors until 10pm, and then the pub aspect becomes more dominant. Fridays and Saturdays they also serve food until 2am, which is a definite plus in my books. All in all, it's a really great place to dine at if you're on a date or looking for a cool place to check out with friends-and I definitely plan to return soon and try out the new menu.
Great place for flavourful tapas and unique drinks in a small chic, modern setting. This is the spot in the Westmount area if you're looking to indulge your tastebuds with some delicious small plates while sipping on good quality drinks. Love the interior design and the ambiance at this place. The service was very personable and friendly. This place is worth checking out if you're looking for a lovely evening spot to take a date to or meet up with friends.
First off, The food was great. delicious and interesting and some of the most striking plating and general presentation in Edmonton. However, I wouldn't recommend going to North 53 for dinner. No. The food is too expensive and the portions are too small. You know when you see a commercial or a TV show making fun of the tiny portions at fancy restaurants? That. If you came with 3-4 people and you got one of their large sharing plates then maybe it would work out alright, I don't know, I didn't see the large plates. but if you are going with the medium and small plates it can be pricey and fail to fill.
Now, the real draw to North 53? For me, and many many others, its the drinks. Their bar staff is really top notch and they come up with some really unique house specials. this is on a short but very upstanding list of quality cocktail bars in Edmonton.
I'd go back for an intimate cocktail with someone special and maybe a late night snack. I really think that's the experience that North 53 had in mind when putting the whole ensemble together, this place really is all about the cocktails.
North 53 is a corner restaurant on 124th Street in Edmonton. They offer a late night menu that starts from 11pm - 2am (Friday and Saturday) that includes Crustacean Cracker, Griddled Mushrooms, Filipino Pork Buns and Fried Chicken. Fried Chicken!!!!!!. Fried chicken has to be one of my favourite foods to eat and I judge fried chicken on five factors.
