Review Sushi Wasabi - Edmonton

Cathy Teranishi
Best place for sushi in Edmonton hands down! Perfectly cooked and seasoned sushi rice, freshest quality fish you’ll get in the city, the toro (and salmon belly too) is buttery and mouth watering. We always get the beef tataki, nigiri, and a few rolls: shrimp tempura roll, avocado shiitake roll, small California, and negitoro. Everything is delicious. We do takeout often but love that they’re back open for dine in!

The menu seems more simple and traditional than the usual Japanese restaurants in the city. Service is great; their kitchen is small and the chefs seem to be careful so it's not rushed. It is a very small restaurant (maybe 5 tables), so reservations are highly recommended.

One of the favorite Japanese restaurants in town. It's a busy place . Their rice is perfect cooked and flavored. The sashimi is very fresh and great size.

My families always recommended Sushi Wasabi to me, so I ordered a lot sushi from them for Christmas Eve, however my partner and I were extremely disappointed. The fish were not fresh and had becoming very watery, especially the Hamachi and Salmon, Salmon tasted like worst than All you can eat quality. *Update* came back to try again on July 21, 2022. Ordered a Chirashi don, portion was bad, lots of rice, only came with a few pieces of fish, not even tasted good, not worth $30.

Got supper for my fiance here. She absolutely loved it! Said it was among the best sushi she had ever ate (in Canada). Will definitely be going back.

Update 2018: This is still some of the best sushi in Edmonton if you know what to order, but it's rolls are not great and the sushi is unfortunately inconsistent. The green tea, tuna, and unagi we're excellent, the scallop was good, but the salmon and hamachi were disappointing. The tuna was so tender and delicate, I ordered another piece. The salmon and hamachi both had a very firm "snappy" texture to them that I didn't like; I have always preferred the soft buttery salmon and tender savoury hamachi. I even tried the salmon Toro but it was not better. I also tried another roll, this time dynamite, but I didn't enjoy it. Again, the roll had too much mayonnaise (I've never had a dynamite roll with mayonnaise before) and it was so big I could barely fit one piece in my mouth (see picture with two tempura shrimp in the roll). It also took 30-40 minutes to get my order even though I was alone, but it was the end of the night (7:40) so maybe they were slowing down prep staff and starting to clean. I still think this place may be overrated, but maybe their non-sushi menu is more consistent. 2016: This is the best sushi I have had in Edmonton, but that is not really a compliment. Sashimi and Nigiri were OK but the couple of rolls they recommended were poor. The Scallop roll in particular was mostly mayonnaise. The other rolls were mostly rice (see photo). I feel overall the hype and price are overdone.

So friendly and very delicious.

The sashimi is fresh, sushi is tasty and the rolls are put together well! I especially love the rice they use, it's a perfect combo in a roll or with a nice slice of fish on top. Service is quick and very friendly. Highly recommend reservations as it's tough to get a table during the evening.

The Wasabi is not the biggest, but is the best. Freshest fish in the city and quiet atmosphere with very good service. It' like being home and eating home made food. The prices are reasonable and surprise a lot of people. Check the hours as they are not always open. Serve Japanese food at the Devonian Festival. Enjoy

Beef takaki was amazing and the sushi was extremely fresh. However, the preparation and cooking is average. This is a case of fine ingredients not having its potential realized which is a bit of a shame. Prices were higher than other sushi restaurants, for lower quantity and quality. Would not go out of my way to come back.

Not sure why by zomato won't let me give out half-stars. I will be honest, not one of us were overly thrilled by this place, which is sad because it came universally highly recommended to us. Don't get me wrong, it is just fine. The fish is quite good, the service is good, and portion is adequate. However, I have had better sushi experiences elsewhere. I think the biggest problem we had was with the rice. Simply put, it didn't have much flavour overall, and was crumbly so that when picked up half immediately fell away. The grains were individually identifiable, but there was little hold to them so that eating this on informed rice probably would have been of equal or greater benefit. Sushi literally means vinegar rice, and it was just fine for us. I'd probably go back for sashimi or cooked foods, but we just were not that impressed.

Here's food for thought. If you could choose (preferably not while on death row), what would your last meal be? Or for something less morbid, what's one food that you can eat for the rest of your life? I'm the type of person to get tired of eating just one thing really easily, but I guess there is one exception to that. You've probably already guessed the answer considering what restaurant we're talking about today.

Top 5, top 5, top 5, top 5<br/><br/>Wasabi still the GOAT in Edmonton for sushi. First plate has the Salmon roe, chop chop, spot prawn, freshwater eel, and toro. These are my top 5. Chop chop always good, probably the only sushi I like that creamy. Salmon roe always tasting sweet when they burst in your mouth. Hahaha. Spot prawn is something everyone should get. Don’t ever get the shitty small shrimp sushi. They are the worst. Freshwater eel (unagi) has such a good flavor and one of the only sushi I liked grilled up. Toro is my go to, and at Wasabi it’s the best. So much flavor in the fat. Fat is tasty all the time. Had to get a second plate cause sushi was too good. Got regular meguro tuna, a piece of seawater eel and mackerel. Seawater eel is less fatty than freshwater eel, also a little fluffier but it’s still aight. I sitll consider it the diet option of eel, a little bland, but still good. Mackerel is dope because it’s one of the sushi that has the skin on it and has that fishy smell and taste. Delicious stuff.<br/><br/>Wasabi might be one of the oldest places in Edmonton. Been going here since I was a kid and it’s still dope AF. It’s usually packed every night of the week for dinner so don’t expect fast service. Expect good food.<br/><br/>Sal says :Just Eat It<br/><br/>#yeg #yegfood #food #foodie #foodporn #foodgasm #foodpics #foodstagram #instafood #delicious #hungry #yummy #dinner #lunch #sushi #japanese

I've visited Sushi Wasabi in the past, way before I even had a single review. So I thought it was time to pay them a well deserved visit. Location hasn't changed much; cute little strip mall locale and still Japanese owned and operated. This place is super cozy with a rather small sushi bar. Only gripe I have is that the table seatings are a tad too close. I got super lucky at around 7:15pm on Saturday to get a table in less then 15mins. All the servers here are super pleasant and very attentive. <br/><br/>My girlfriend and I were starving so we wasted no time going through their menu. We started off with their Beef Tataki and that was spectacular. Perfect sear on the outside and their ponzu is super light. And they definitely don't skimp on the meat slices, they loaded our plate up. Next was 14pcs of Assorted Sashimi. The quality of their fish is simply superb. The octopus (tako) was super tender, along with the salmon, yellowtail and the tuna that melts in your mouth. <br/><br/>I got their Wasabi Combination which comes with 28pcs including Eel (unagi), Tuna Belly (toro), Chop Chop, 6pcs of avocado & shiitake roll and shrimp & asparagus. Salmon, tuna, tako and yellowtail make another return for our Nigiri. All the pieces were made beautifully. Their chop chop lacked masago but was nonetheless delicious. And their Unagi literally melts and becomes one with the rice as soon as you put it in your mouth. Their rice is really something; perfectly seasoned. Slightly warm and sweet from the rice vinegar. Me and my girlfriend have a special love for Uni (Sea Urchin) and we ordered 4pcs to finish off our meal. Probably the best bites of Uni I've had in Edmonton at least. Perfectly umami and creamy with the rice, it's a pure mouthgasm. Worth the price of $5.50 per piece. <br/><br/>Sushi Wasabi is by far one of the best places to go to get amazing quality sushi in Edmonton. It's atmosphere is warm & friendly. I just might have to make a few more visits in the near future.
Around The City
Yum yum. My go to Japanese food place in Edmonton. The rice itself is perfection. Each individual grain is evident and you can tell the sushi was made with great hands. The sashimi is fresh and worth the price every visit.
R
Expensive, but good sushi always is. Typically a very special occasion place for me because of it, but this is without question as good as you can get for sushi in Edmonton. The place isn't too big, and almost always is packed so reservations are always recommended, even on a weekday. The service has always been prompt and friendly.
Ah
We were craving for Sushi on one of our Sunday Dinner meetups; not rolls or tapas but fresh slices of meaty fish on a bed of well prepped rice. Which led us to discover Sushi Wasabi, with incredibly high ratings. Just a few blocks away from Southgate, it’s in a well known little strip mall, in and around Sunterra Market and Quickly! <br/><br/>We got there just a little over an hour before they close, and the restaurant was still quite busy. The space is quite tight, with spacing maximized, and tables squished around every corner possible. Cozy to say the least. Service was attentive, and food came out quickly and smoothly throughout the whole service. <br/><br/>Beef Tataki ($15.00) 5/5 Seared and served with ponzu, the citrus lemon sauce was awesome. Didn’t overpower the actual taste of the beef and it was a hefty amount of pieces too! <br/>Gyoza ($6.50) ⅖ Wasn’t crispy. somewhat soggy; room temperature at best. <br/>Assorted Tempura ($15.00) ⅘ Hefty price tag, but what was given was crispy and batter was seasoned well! <br/>Sushi Combination #8 ($68.00) 5/5 Worth the price on all levels, this alone would have made us satisfied. Tuna,Surf clam and the yellowtail were my favorite. Each piece of fish was a decent size and had a good fish to rice ratio! <br/><br/>Will be back to try more! The menu is quite extensive, and there were a lot of rolls that caught my eye. Beef tataki is a must, that dish alone would have me coming back for sure!

We are huge fans of this restaurant. The service is excellent, of course. <br/><br/>But the food is amazing. We have gone there at least 7-8 times and ordered different things each time. Each time, we have had excellent food.

Legit Japanese family run restaurant, the environment isn't great but the food is authentic, very few places serve aburi(seared) sushi, negitoro(tunabelly) sushi, and blue fin tuna. Price is expensive but worth a try if youre looking for authentic traditional.
Ladyrose
Stopped for a sushi supper fix. We shared combo 5,6 yam tempura and gyoza. Our meal was prepared quickly, service was friendly, attentive and chatty and our meal was very good. Crisp tempura, big pieces of fish on the sushi and flavorful pork dumplings. This local, tiny, slightly worn, family operated, restaurant is a food find. Enjoyed our meal! Our next sushi craving will end with a stop here.

Based on the reviews, my friends and I while visiting Edmonton beginning of April decided to eat here. We called ahead for a table of 4. We arrived on time but the hostess could not sit us down. She seemed stressed out that we had come in at the same time a guy was picking up take out order. She had to ring up his order completely before sitting us down which took about 8 minutes while we blocked the small entry way. The agedashi tofu was tasteless. The tuna and minced green onions were not minced in together for the tuna tataki roll. My friend's yam roll was a big mess. Rolled so loosely so regardless of how you try eating, it fell apart. The teriyaki chicken bowl had cold salad and warm chicken with sauce in a deep bowl together - this could have been easily served on a flatter plate so the salad would be a bit separated. My friend said the chicken tasted good. Rice had to be ordered separately adding more cost. My friend did like her regular tuna roll. The waitress asked us if we would like tea so we said yes. Didn't know we'd get charged $2 each which was a surprise as tea is served without cost at most Metro Vancouver sushi restaurant. I don't know how this restaurant received such high reviews. My friends and I were very disappointed. It was overpriced, service and taste was mediocre. a

Authentic, delicious, quality of food was amazing. Not overly expensive as most of the other Japanese restaurants in town are. Very impressed, this is my new favourite Sushi spot.

Sushi Wasabi is by far the best Japanese restaurant in Edmonton. The food here has time and time again been consistently delicious with the best quality of sushi and sashimi. If you're looking for fairly traditional Japanese sushi and sashimi you'll find it here. This place doesn't have a lot of those fancy (north Americanized rolls) that you'll find in other restaurants. The staff are friendly and the service is good! The specials that they have are great! I would recommend making a reservation as they can get quite busy!
James Woodrow
Hands down the best Japanese restaurant in Edmonton.  Great sushi, fresh seafood - satisfies my craving every time.  The one thing that I did not like was their takoyaki - but hey - I do it up at Wasabi for fish!
Mikey B
In my opinion this is the best Japanese restaurant in Edmonton if you are looking for fresh sushi done right.  No matter what you order here everything is great.  Definitely try this place, you will not be disappointed.

Sushi Wasabi is the only restaurant I will go for sushi in Edmonton. I first started coming here about 2 years ago by a recommendation from a coworker who raved about this place, and am so glad I tried it. They have the most fresh, most flavourful, delicious sushi that I have ever had. I have a list of favourite sushi that I always get and I also like trying whatever they have on special. If you come often enough, and order your favourites every time, the staff actually remember your order so they just ask you if you're okay with the usual, how cool is that! The restaurant however, is tiny and fills up very quickly. I was turned away my first visit because there were simply no seats left; bar was full, all the other tables were either taken or had reservations already so I definitely recommend making reservations at all times. Service is always excellent; staff are attentive, and very friendly. The food can take a bit long to come out sometimes, but it is so worth the wait. I will always come back as long as they stay open! Visited (again) on November, 2015.

Best nigiri in Edmonton. Much better than Mikado. Some of the hot dishes are great too,  particularly the shitake tempura. IMO best sushi in Alberta, since Wa's closed in Calgary. Better sushi than Sushi Bar Zipang in Calgary. Any Calgary peeps out there, I would welcome any Calgary recommendations.

Last week I was in the mood for some fish so me and Jessy decided to go to Sushi Wasabi right after work. It’s located near Southgate Mall in a little strip of shops. We got there right around 5:30PM and it was already starting to get busy so I definitely recommend making a reservation if possible. There’s an ample amount of parking out front, so that is always a plus. I’ve been here multiple times before, and it’s always a debate between here or Ichiban. Ichiban has been closed for some construction, so that made my choice a lot easier.

Food quality varies each visit! Been to this place more than 10 times. Love the service that they provide. The "grandma" there is polite and serves in a very Japanese way! Food is good most of the time! But I went there in new year one time, the food wasn't quite good! I noticed that the old Japanese cook was away! I felt disappointed for the assorted sashimi that I ordered as it only had tuna and salmon 😢
Vivian Wang
The sushi chef has 50+ years experience and the restaurant is family own. Definitely need reservation for weekends and busy Thursday. If you are a foodie,I strongly recommend you to try their special menu. It's always so fresh and so special! Please enjoy the food and you will agree that this is the best Japanese food you can get in YEG!

Great authentic sushi; by far the best sushi and sashimi place in town. If you want a billion different types of rolls, go elsewhere and probably avoid going to Japan.
Brian.dw.kim
Authentic sushi and sashimi. Pretty close to authentic sushi and sashimi from their homeland Japan.

The other night, my friend was craving Japanese food so we went to Sushi Wasabi. It actually felt nice to not pick the food place for once. My friends usually make me pick the place to eat since I'm a "foodie" and it actually gets pretty stressful sometimes!  Sushi Wasabi is located on the southside in a little strip mall area, probably about 2 minutes away from Southgate Mall. It's a small and intimate restaurant that gives off a warm, cozy feel.

Excellent Sushi in Edmonton. It is a definite visit if you are a sushi lover travelling to Edmonton or living in Edmonton.<br/><br/>It's a small restaurant beside farmer's market, small but warm feeling. Service are pretty good.<br/><br/>Menu is not too big and not too small, with new fresh items hand-written on blackboard hanging on the wall, you know what's the most fresh you could get. Salt water Eel is one of the most famous item. Sashimi is fresh, deep fry food is crispy yet covering with right amount of batter.<br/><br/>Give it a try. You will love it.
Ron Darrin
It's not great, but it's not bad! Sushi in Edmonton is outrageous for price and this place is sorta in the middle for price. Fish was fresh and food was not the best I've ever had but also not the worst.
Hemsa_12
Don't bother trying to get take out. Don't advertise take out option if one never accepts take out orders. This is the 3rd time in 6 months we have attempted to get take out and every time we were told they are "too busy to accept take out" during the 5:30pm-7:30pm time period. We even suggested picking it up 30 minutes to 45 minutes later and they still said 'no'. We live in the area and would love to support local restaurants but this will be our last time trying.

Review. Service was good, she asked if we had a reservation, no we do not, she found a place for the two of us anyway. I ordered a California roll, two Chop Chop Cones and two spicy tuna Cones scallop Cones where good; except Rice has to much Vinegar, spicy Tuna is just scrap meat, but has a good kick of spice to it. the California roll, has GRAPEFRUIT in it?!? I have been eating Sushi for over 25 Years, NEVER have I seen GRAPEFRUIT in a California roll (granted I seen California roll as the Header and have not read further. after all California roll is California roll, right? , well apparent I am wrong. and the roll is not a roll its a log of about 4" in Diameter. how are you going to eat that log? very carefully. Menu prices are expensive, California roll is $24. ok, the size of it, but Size is not everything maybe I am spoiled from the West Coast, the choices and Prices of Sushi.
Yikes
All and all my family had an ok experience except for 2 concerns. I am by no means a health food fanatic but I try to avoid deep fried foods so I was quite disappointed to discover that they would not under any circumstances substitute anything for the huge pieces of tempura included in their bento boxes. My second concern was their request for us to consider leaving after 80 minutes as there were people waiting for our table. That was totally unacceptable.
Tonaaay
Borderline. This is one of the few Japanese restaurants that I've been to that has very few special rolls, or rolls in general actually. I guess they had an ok selection of sashimi. <br/><br/>I ended up ordering sushi combo #6 which turned out to be pretty delicious. However, due to the lack of rolls, I wouldn't return a second time.
Sushi
Worse Sushi Place in Edmonton. As an avid sushi lover, I can tell you this place is not one of the worse but THE worse sushi I have ever tasted.<br/>The restaurant and service is nice but the actual food is not.<br/>Glad I was able to try it but will never return.
Demonicpudding
Great!. The Udon bowl pretty much feeds my family of 3 for under $30. Their (Salmon) Sashimi is wonderful and I prefer it over the sushi, however the Salmon-avocado rolls are superb. It's busy Friday-Sunday and it's recommended you reserve a spot. The sushi chefs are definitely professional, and super sweet, the staff will remember you if you frequent, just a wonderful little restaurant overall..
Naslemon
Excellent!. Excellent, the sushi chef is a pro. Quality sushi delivered in a non-pretentious manner.
Scared Mole Rat
Large Portions of Fresh Sushi : ). Great Sushi !!!!!!!.........large portions.....very fresh fish and rolls ....but it's small so make reservations for dinner........definitely go : )
Marsha W
Some of the best sushi in Edmonton, good portion sizes. Sashimi served nicely cool, not cold.
G_birdie
The Best!. This is the best sushi restaurant in town. Period. My family and I have been coming here since the mid-90's and it never disappoints! The fish is always perfect quality and the service is always great.
Omnomnomnivore
Overrated. Was quite disappointed after reading all the great reviews on urbanspoon. Sushi rolls had more rice than fish and would fall apart upon picking up and the rice had far too much vinegar in it. Definitely not worth the price either.
Inukshuk
Absolute best sushi in Edmonton. Finally made it in to check this place out. It's a busy spot and a little cramped; ideally you probably want to make a reservation for dinner on a Friday night. We didn't, but we managed to grab a spot at the bar with a view of the chefs doing their work. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get any better than that. Service was fantastic, efficient, and friendly and the prices were reasonable. <br/><br/>The green tea is on par with the best I've had in Japan myself, as was the vegetable tempura (the batter was perfectly light and crispy) and the agedashi-dofu (Fried Tofu with dashi sauce. They actually garnished the dish with dried dashi, grated daikon, and spring onion, which I've yet to see in Canada before. Amazing!). <br/><br/>We moved on to an assortment of sushi, all of which was exceptionally prepared, with all the flavours proudly represented without being drowned in overwhelming sauces. In particular, the spicy octopus cone, negitoro maki, and the unagi were great. Their hand rolls (cones) are huge; you definitely get your monies worth. The california roll was just okay; I've had better, but only rarely and at one or two other places not in Edmonton. <br/><br/>To wrap things up the lovely woman from the counter with whom my friend from Japan struck up a conversation as dinner concluded recommended the grapefruit jello for dessert, stating that it was her own recipe. In Japan it would more aptly be referred to as Jelly I was told, so don't be fooled by a trade name. It was amazing! Fresh, sweet and yet tart ruby grapefruit riddle a basic gelatin topped with a little whipped cream. It was a simple yet perfect end to an incredible meal.<br/><br/>All in all I had an remarkable experience and I look forward to returning again soon. Yes, the place is owned by a Japanese family and frankly it does make all the difference. It was nice to hear Japanese spoken in the background, it definitely adds a little something special!
Herdofwhat
Great food, great service and not badly priced. Would definitely recommend to friends.
Skye
Decent sushi. Not a lot of great choices for Japanese food in Edmonton, and Sushi Wasabi would be my choice if I were to pick one. Tried various sushi, sashimi, bento boxes and they were all good. Service was ok. A family-run restaurant which is a model I like to support whenever possible and reasonable.
RM
Best sushi in Edmonton hands down. I grew up on the west coast and never thought I'd waste money getting sushi here. But I have this place a try and it's awesome. Only place ill buy sashimi in Edmonton.
Haji Mustapha
Spectacular. I have been eating at Wasabi for nearly twenty years, and have never had anything less than a top notch meal. Without a doubt the best sushi in Edmonton--and the best tempura, and teriyaki, and bento, and maki etc....Do not hesitate--go now!

What? Japanese owners of a sushi restaurant? Miracles.. This restaurant falls under the category of “if you value good service more than great food, this isn’t the place for you.” We were so offended the first time we went here by the sheer racism of the owners that we almost didn’t go back. But it’s delicious and that is my priority. <br/>If you are not Japanese or a regular you absolutely must be there at 5pm or make a reservation a day in advance. If you don’t, they will treat you like you are the bane of their existence. It’s pretty brutal. As well, if you are a large person (not just fat, but tall) they stare at you like you have a 5th head and it takes you twice as long to become a “regular” so beware.<br/>Moving along, my favourite place to sit in any sushi restaurant is the sushi bar. I love watching them work; and despite the rather rude waitresses and owner, the 2 sushi chefs are charming and interesting to chat with and watch.<br/>When you look over the menu you’ll notice they lack a variety of rolls. But what they have is amazing. My fiancé is deeply in love with their house California rolls (which are nearly the size of your face and have the perfect touch of grapefruit (I don’t even like grapefruit and I think it’s delicious), avocado and asparagus.). While my favourite is the chopchop/flying fish roe cone.<br/>Once they have deemed you a regular you are allowed to ask for substitutions and special made rolls. I often ask for the tuna roll with avocado.<br/>So, then you get your food (after a while, admittedly), and you eat away and your drinks are regularly refilled even if you are a (gasp) outsider. And the closer you get to having to pay the nicer the waitresses are to you (funny.) and then you go to pay and it is a surprisingly low amount for what you get. The only items on the menu that are unfairly priced are the appetizers. Just avoid that mess of a page. The octopus balls are pretty good, as is the goma-ae, but definitely not worth the cost. Stick to miso soup, tempura and sushi/rolls.<br/>As a disclaimer, neither my fiancé or I have ordered salmon. He is too busy ordering the California rolls and I don’t like salmon in the raw. After reading the other reviews here, we will both be avoiding it.<br/>To sum up, they make great sushi (see disclaimer), at decent prices with bad, racist service.<br/>Overall, it’s still the best sushi in the city so I’ll always be back. (And I’m at regular status now so my service is GREAT. :P)
Jewjitsu
Good quality food and staff is actually japanese. I can see why people like it and recommend it. It's actually run by japanese people. Free parking and it was quite busy (which is a good sign). Prices are quite high but probably just a smidgen above average for edmonton. I ordered a house salad and half order of salmon sashimi. $10 for 5 pieces and $8.50 for a house salad. My brother had their $26 dinner box which had sushi (kappa and another roll), tempura and some sashimi/salmon bbq. I had some tempura pieces and it tasted the same as an all u can eat place. Salmon was good quality and well cut, just average portion. I'm not sure why this is listed as $$
Foodie
Yum!. I've tried a fair bit of sushi places in edmonton and Sushi Wasabi is definitely my favorite, with Mikado coming second. I highly recommend their chop chop hand roll, hokkigai sashimi, agetashi tofu and sesame icecream (love love! ). Their unagi don is pretty good too.
Swong
Very impressived with their menu and the atmosphere of the restaurant. The waiters were nice and the food came with 20 minutes of ordering. Though they were slow with the unagi don everything tasted good. The California roll was huge and filling. On the other hand the sashimi was only sub-par compared to other places. The unagi don was great and was grilled to the point where the oil came out of the eel and into the rice. By doing so the rice was rich with the eel flavour.<br/><br/>Overall very impressed with the food and service.
Edmonton Wingman
Very best Japanese food in town. Same friendly owner over years. Highest quality ingredients without doubt.
Urban Eats
Edmontons best sushi restaurant. Also the most Authentic considering they are actually Japanese unlike most of the Chinese owned restaurants in Edmonton. Great prices and amazing quality.
Otaku San
The only place you will ever come close. Seriously, this is the only Sushi restaurant that's worth going to in Edmonton, and the only Sushi restaurant that comes close to serving you real sushi.
Ms
Dinner for 5 people at 5:30pm. One baby is in the group, they asked us to put her drink away because of their regulations on outside food, it was a baby drink???<br/>The waitress so far should check her attitude at the door before she starts her shift.<br/>No explanation to their dishes, not that we need help, but no interest from the waitress to show new customers the specials or there popular items.<br/>Food came, portion was good, everything tasted good & the cod dish was delightful. Unfortunately our waitress never came back to check on us, out refill our drinks.<br/>Overall I have to say I was very disappointed with the whole experience & very doubt I'd be back.<br/>Good product quality can not overcome poor customer service, unimpressive atmosphere, & the feel of being un welcomed.<br/>I wouldn't recommend this spot to any of my friends & family. Even though it's a family run business, it doesn't show.
Whitney Frann
My sushi was old :( and owners didnt care about it. Told me that it was still good to eat. Not impressed
Amanda K
After reading reviews about sushi wasabi I decided to go try it out. I recently moved from Vancouver to edmonton . And have yet to find anything remotely close to sushi back home .. Sushi wasabi wasn't bad but it wasn't good either . They wouldn't make a deep fried spicy tuna roll , which every sushi place back home has. I have come to the conclusion that I will only get sushi when back in bc
Bstewart
Yummy sashimi, but limited selection. I ordered take out from Sushi Wasabi last week with a friend. I ordered their tuna sashimi, and she had two rolls. We both really enjoyed our selections. My sashimi was kept nice and cold even though it was take out, and was very fresh. They also have the option of ordering half orders of sushi and sashimi which is nice if you don't need a huge meal. The pricing was also fair, and pretty typical of other sushi restaurants in Edmonton.<br/><br/>The downside to Sushi Wasabi is their selection of rolls. They have more basic types (avocado, uni etc.) and do not have any specialty rolls. The food they do have is delicious, but they could definitely benefit from an expansion of their menu. I am sure that their sushi chefs could handle some more complicated rolls judging from how well they prepared their existing items. I will definitely return, and it is nice to have such a delicious sushi restaurant so close to home!
Kaitlyn Chapman
Very little variety in rolls, rolls are heavy in rice. Friendly staff but certainly not the best sushi in Edmonton. Not likely to go back or recommend.
Mike
Unimpressed. Salmon sashimi was gross and would be subpar for tokyo express. one piece i took out of my mouth because it had something lumpy and solid in it i couldn't bite through (tumor? i dont know but that was discusting). i have never encountered sashimi like that before. <br/><br/>rolls were ok, nothing special, but ok. service was terrible. 3 different people serving our table came by within a 2 minute span to ask us the same questions (drinks, ready to order, etc) but then there would be a 20 minute+ time span before u'd see anyone again. <br/><br/>now maybe that was an off day for food and service, but my impressions are its a disorganized restaurant with questionable food. i'm not seeing why it has such a good review.
Cliffsays
Great Sushi. Cute little place, very intimate, great sashimi and beef tataki!
Burberry
Waste of Time. My party drove from the north end to get there only to get rejected at the door two times now. We've heard some good reviews about the place but it's not worth our gas money. They can't guarantee a reservation but they tell you to arrive at an earlier time to try and get some seating. We arrived when they just opened their doors and they proceed to tell us that they are all booked up. They should have told us in the first place so that we didn't have to waste our time. We ended up going to Sushi Garden by Mayfield and had all you can eat sushi. It was good and worth it. Overall, I am very disappointed at their level of service there.

Only ate here once and the time i did it was good. However earlier on in the week I asked if I could reserve a table for 10 and was told do to the time and how busy they will not do reservations of over 7 people and to come earlier at 5 pm so that we have a better chance. So I changed the plans with my friends to come earlier and we all showed up at 5 pm and got turned away for service because they ended up reserving the place anyways. This is twice that we got turned away. Once with a party of 4 and now today. Was given really bad advice by either the front end supervisor and now I have 9 other people that doesn't have a good first impression for this restaurant as it wasted their time.

Fishy salmon sashimi and so-so service. Overall I was rather unimpressed. The salmon sashimi was almost fishy in taste, the maki rolls were made with too much rice and the service was lacking. We had to wait forever to get our tea and water refilled, which our server made us feel like it was a chore for her. We also felt like we were being pushed out the door though it was only 8:30 PM and there were several tables still full.

After seeing all the positive reviews about this place I decided to give it a try. I went there for lunch and it was pretty busy so I was excited. I shared a Ebro box that had mediocre teriyaki chicken. The salad, tempura and rolls were just ok. One of the spicy tuna rolls I ordered was very poorly put together, the rice was all over the place and wasn't Ben in the shape of a circle. This place was not worth the drive at all, I've had much better

It's a great place. Does the classic sushi to the best. Who needs surprises all the time?! And yes sometimes they are busy and tend to missed tables., just call out and remind them, no big deal. The food is just too good.
Bigeater Small Town
Expensive but mediocre food. True to it's name, the wasabi is good but you don't get enough of it. The assorted sashimi was good but not out of the ordinary. The hokkiGai was amazing. The service we found polite but sparse. Sushi was decent but no soft shell crab on the menu. In summary, this is not a go out of your way for sushi place.

Fantastic. I usually go to Kobe, but my friend took me here and it was amazing. Great service too! The sashimi was super fresh and it is a great find! Reservations are a great idea because they seem to have a loyal following and we were lucky to get a table quickly.

Never even made it to the sushi.... I am from Ottawa, but visit Edmonton on a regular basis. Typically to have sushi, I will go to the Tokyo Noodle Shop (I highly recommend! Nice ambiance, quick service, delicious food, moderately priced) or Kyoto (also recommend, however I do prefer the atmosphere of TNS). However, on this trip my boyfriend and I wanted to visit Sushi Wasabi since it was closer to his place and there were so many positive reviews online. Our first two attempts were thwarted by reduced hours and then too busy to accommodate us. Finally, we made a reservation for a weekday evening. We were seated at a two person table within half an arms reach of another couple. I was not impressed by the atmosphere or the proximity to other people (very cramped). The waitress (also the hostess) brought us water right away and hot towels. I thought 'Perhaps this won't be so bad...'. And then that was the last we saw of her. THIRTY minutes pass and she had yet to even acknowledge our existence. However, a group of six people (who arrived 10 minutes after us) seemed to have no problem being served, who within that twenty minutes had received a full order of drinks and their first round of food. When my boyfriend and I decided to leave, the waitress seemed surprised. Really? I told her that the wait was unacceptable and we left. I unfortunately cannot provide a review on the quality of sushi, however I can on the service - or lack there of. <br/><br/>Sushi Wasabi, a disregard for your customers is completely unacceptable and I (and my boyfriend) do not and will not recommend your establishment on service alone.

Very happy!. My boyfriend and I are fanatics for Japanese food and have tried several places in Edmonton. <br/>The service was very friendly and polite, our food came out quickly, and everything tasted great!<br/>The salmon sashimi was the absolute BEST we've had in Edmonton. Hands down.<br/>The freshness of all the ingredients was worth the couple extra bucks you're paying compared to a less authentic japanese restaurant in Edmonton.<br/><br/>Overall, we are definitely going back. Definitely.

P: !. As far as eating sushi in edmonton goes, sushi wasabi is one of the best places to get an "authentic" japanese meal.<br/><br/>i've been there a few times over this past summer and the service and food has been consistently and reliably good. as commented below, all the cooks and servers are actually japanese.<br/><br/>freshness of fish: about as fresh as you can reliably get in edmonton. 4/5<br/>portion sizes: very fairly sized, imo. i don't feel like they skimp at all. 4/5<br/>price/value: i'd say it's a bit expensive, but not completely unreasonable. 3.5/5<br/><br/>I've had their beef tataki (loaded with lots of green onions, sliced thinly and soaking in their vinegary sauce), tempura (always piping hot and not too oily when we get it, crunchy, their vegetable tempuras have vegetables such as onions, broccoli, potato, which some other restaurants don't do i've noticed.), chirashi (always a good thing to start off with if you want a sampling of a restaurant's sashimi & sushi rice), california rolls (i can't resist getting these), and plenty of their sushi combination plates.<br/><br/>i find the best value in their sushi platters, especially when you're sharing with 2 - 4 people; you can easily split the sushi pieces so that each person gets one type.<br/><br/>man i went on a bit of a rambling tangent here, but the bottom line is: sushi wasabi could benefit from fresher ingredients, but hey we're in edmonton. otherwise it's very good.

2016 Review:<br/><br/>It's been 5 years since I've been forced to come here to pay high prices.  Several things have changed.  Service has gotten way better.  The prices are here to stay.  The menu has gotten a lot more diverse.  It is authentically Japanese and I have been to Japan and back to verify that :).  It's all about the ingredients and preparation methods.  This place has it pat down.  This is a great place to splurge yourself if you can't make it to Yuzen, Izakaya Tomo, Ikki Izakaya, or Dorinku.  Those are my "authentic" Japanese places for Edmonton.  I can't elaborate further otherwise Zomato may find it offensive to some audiences.  Viewer discretion is advised. :D<br/><br/>2011 Review:<br/><br/> Huh... so this is what REAL REAL Japanese food is eh?. Comparing to the "not-as-authentic" I love sushi, Kyoto, Hakone, Sakana, etc... I'd rather eat the non-authentic stuff that has more variety, taste better, and is quite a bit cheaper.<br/><br/>I don't mean to hate on this place. This is a great Japanese mom and pop family restaurant. The service really sucks, especially with that one guy. With the high food prices and the crappy service this is the only restaurant in which I tip 10% consistently... most other places get 15% or more. <br/><br/>The food does truly taste fresh. I'm no sashimi expert so to me it tastes just the same as any other place. My friends that are experts say it's a lot better here though. I almost feel that I want the food to taste better because of the price I'm paying. You guys know what I mean? The effect of "I'm paying so much it must be awesome so I'll savour every last bite..." <br/><br/>All in all, I feel that the servers are way too cocky for their own good. I also feel that my business is not wanted here because they have so many customers loving the place already. Sushi Wasabi's owners have been spoiled silly by customers. I will never return again on my own unless my friends beg me to come.

The BEST Sushi in the City. I absolutely love Sushi Wasabi, I first discovered it when I lived on the south side and it fast became my favorite. I moved to a new area a couple months ago, and searched high and low for a new sushi spot that could replace my favorite southside spot. No place even came close to comparing. Their food is absolutely delicious, and although the service can be a little slow at times, I am willing to accept that, for the high quality of food. Even though I have moved about 20 - 30 minutes away, I still make that long drive to get the best sushi rather than be stuck with the mediocre stuff I have found in my new area of the city.

First time I ever tried sashimi was here! And it was incredible!!! So fresh. The beef tataki was great too. My only complaint is that some of the rolls are much too large. I had to end up breaking them apart because they were huge! I rather pop a roll in my mouth and get the full flavor and effect! Other than that, great place!
Stephen Gladwin
#7 is a great sashimi and maki combo. They hide wasabi in all the sushi though so ask for no wasabi when you order unless you can handle the wasabi surprise in each bite.
Sho
First time here. Comparable to the good sushi from zipang in calgary. Love the texture of the fish. Can actually taste the fish. Rice was cooked and seasoned well. Beef tataki lacked a bit of the tart kick but still ok. And was a bit more cooked than I'm used too. Overall great authentic Japanese restaurant. Favorite restuarant in Edmonton for me now

One of the few JAPANESE (not Chinese run) gold mines.. Wasabi is at the top of ACTUAL Japanese run restaurants in Edmonton. Many Japanese restaurants here, but if you like your Japanese food cooked by Chinese and Vietnamese non-trained or concerned about the Japanese culture people, then go see them and save a few bucks. <br/>Wasabi is tops with Koto Japanese Restaurant in St. Albert. Mikado is a close runner up. Mom and Pop, and all homemade. Their Sushi is the freshest and most flavourful. Not a complete menu, but mostly for sushi lovers. All Japanese service with the expected courtesies ever few moments. .
Quebecoise
Nice fresh food. Had myself a solo dinner (business trip) at Sushi Wasabi and enjoyed the mozuku salad (seaweed) and the unagi donburi (hopefully I got that right). The server had the kindness to point out that the mozuku can be a bit slimy to some (good tip for those with texture issues), but it was lovely to me. The vinegar dressing was just nice, not overpowering. The unagi (bbq eel) was awesome. The fish was in no way overcooked and the sauce was flavourful, and also not overpowering. It was a nice light meal (after hefty business trip/training lunches), but if your appetite's a bit bigger, I'd order something else too.<br/><br/>I noticed one minor service issue at the neighbouring table where a dish was brought out well after the patrons had finished their meal; they naturally turned it away. That sort of thing has happened to me in other places and gets my feathers ruffled, but I had a simple enough order that it was no problem. I don't know that I saw too many other 'ruffled' patrons though, so it might've been a "one of".<br/><br/>It's a small-ish place, btw, so either call ahead or consider sitting at the bar if it's busy.

Wasabi has been my favorite Japanese restaurant in the city for years. The service is always polite and efficient, and the food is always fresh with that family made quality to it. I highly recommend the Goma-ae spinach salad, and the yam tempura.
The BerzerkeR
Been a Sushi Wasabi customer for 14 years and never had a bad experience. Actually, this is the best place in Edmonton for sashimi and sushi. Period.

Salmon smelled like fish

The best Japanese restaurant in Edmonton.. We have tried many Japanese restaurants in Edmonton but none are close to Wasabi. You can tell just by the texture of the rice in any of their menu items. The rice is not stuck together like a hunk of soft carbohydrate but is tasty and the individual grains are distinguishable. Most "Japanese" restaurants the rice is very poorly cooked. I assure you I know rice because I have been eating it for nearly all my life. <br/>The size of the fish in their sushi is by far the largest and tastiest in the city. If you are looking for good Japanese food then go to Wasabi and don't be ripped off by the imitators.<br/><br/>Don't forget to try their coffee jello or grapefruit jello for dessert! The grapefruit jello has real grapefruit in it and I assume the coffee is made from real coffee. It is a nice treat to end a meal but not too heavy like most desserts.

Awesome Food & Service. Excellent sushi and sashimi with some excellent specials. Small number of tables so reserve but truly outstanding.

Beef sashimi is good. But little bit over priced

THE BEST JAP FOOD EVER!!!. Ive been a customer of sushi wasabi for a very long time now and their food has been one of the best! if you don't like it i dunno what your missing!<br/>their beef tataki is one of the finest and so is the nabeyaki udon which btw is a MUST TRY of all times. sushi wasabi is great and probably one of my all time favorite japanese resturants no doubt about it, sushi wasabi will reign supreme when it comes to japanese cuisine

Not impressed. We made a reservation for a big party a month ahead. The person who answered the phone has agreed to accept our reservation. So we called the day before the reservation date. to confirm They told us they could not accomondate us because we are a large party. Why wouldnt they tell us earlier? And the lady who was talking to us seems to not care with our situation. It was painful for us to look for another place at the last minute.<br/><br/>NOT impress at all

Fresh, great service... best in edmonton. Those who gave this a lukewarm to not very good review puzzle me... especially the condescending comment that those who love it don't know sushi. I live in Vancouver... and Wasabi is better than many places here. It is very basic and not big on wow factor or creativity, but fresh and dependable and owned/operated by lovely Japanese family. My favourite in Edmonton easily.
Bob
First time visit - yet another typical Edmonton sushi restaturant. I would have to agree with Chris, this place isn't that good at all and they wouldn't survive in an environment where there were better options but alas, this is Edmonton. Other people who have given good reviews to this place just don't know what good sushi is so it is like asking a 4 year old their opinion on which religion is best....<br/><br/>Ok what we had there on our first visit:<br/><br/>Miso. Nothing special but more costly than everywhere else.<br/><br/>Lobster tempura. Bad choice, never again. Rock lobster, not atlantic. The tempura batter didn't cook through and was soggy. Over priced. May try some other tempura next time but it is obvious that they don't make this on a regular basis.<br/><br/>Wasabi. You would think that they would actually go out and get real wasabi but no. The wasabi here is pretty bad, lightly colored and definitely strong horseradish.<br/><br/>Sashimi. Salmon sashimi was actually pretty good. Not rubbery or chewy like most Edmonton places. Bit pricey though <br/><br/>Shrimp tempura roll. This was actually good and we would get it again.<br/><br/>Salmon roll. One line describes this - 'where's the fish?'<br/><br/>In general. Prices are high for what you get. If the prices were more respectable then i would add it to my list of places to go to in a pinch. We are going to try some of the other items on our next visit, but it doesn't look very promising that we are going to change our opinion on this one.
The Red Hot Chili Pepper
Not as good as Ichiban. Overpriced.. I've lived in Osaka where the family who owns Wasabi is from. Osaka is famous for its food, however this still does not compare to sushi eaten in Japan!<br/>,<br/>Like the other reviewer I've been many times however I am now giving up after experiencing very long waits for my food. <br/><br/>I've often arrived at the restaurant - tacky strip mall, tacky decor (and uncomfortable chairs), with half the restaurant empty. For some reason - Mama-san (who speaks almost no English), will not seat us due to reservations - very frustrating!<br/>My single biggest complaint with the sushi , is that it has way too much Wasabi on it! Sometimes my pieces of sushi are almost inedible.<br/>We have found the meals very expensive too - for better sushi try Ichiban!

4/5 for Sushi Wasabi. I'd heard from a few sources that this was a great place for sushi, so I thought I'd give it a shot!<br/>It's a tiny location in a strip mall, but it's one of the good strip malls that contains other high-end businesses like Sunterra Market (the ritzy grocery store) and Jack's Grill (an Original Fare restaurant). <br/>I've also heard that this restaurant is actually owned by a Japanese family! That's a huge plus, I think. The sense of authenticity is pleasing. <br/>Inside, the place is cute. There's a sushi bar and a handfull of tables. There are screens separating some of the different areas and Japanese decorations and art on the walls, but it's not overdone. I feel like if they upped the decor a little - maybe a little classier - it would be a REALLY contending place to all others.<br/><br/>We got seated near the back and started flipping through the menu. We were promptly brought hot cloths, which is a touch that I always look for in an authentic Japanese restaurant. We also ordered a pot of Green Tea (1.50$). <br/>I was a little tossed up. When I'm just ordering for myself at a sushi place, I tend to like to get a combo so that I'll be able to get some variety. All I really wanted was some miso soup, sashimi, and a spicy tuna roll... But none of those come in a one-person-friendly quantity. So combo it was.<br/><br/>I ordered the Bento Box (24.80$), as it did contain many of my favourite things.<br/>It started with miso soup, which was mostly standard except for the little pieces of fried tofu in it, which was great as opposed to the usual un-fried, white cube kind.<br/>The wait was a little while, but I only could imagine that they were busy preparing everything, so I didn't mind. Soon my Bento came, which included tempura, nigiris & maki, cooked salmon, some kind of a sunomono-esque spinach salad, some purple things that tasted pickled - which I just ate and didn't ask questions, sashimi, and rice.<br/><br/>I've gotten a little bored of tempura, but I liked that this one contained some items that weren't typical - zucchini, broccoli. I was also very pleased with the nigiris. I'm very picky about the fish to rice ratio, and they were doing it up to my standards here, which is rare. There was much more fish then rice, and it came with a tasty crab (pollock) one that I've never seen anywhere else. The cooked salmon was pretty uninteresting to me and I didn't finish it. There was nothing wrong with it, but I wasn't in a sushi place for COOKED salmon... Lastly, the sashimi was great. The chunks were large and fresh - no complaints there.<br/><br/>I was very satisfied with this meal! While I still have other sushi places on my list to try, I think that I would put this one in the lead at the moment.

Unfortunately, we cannot share many of the rave reviews for wasabi. When we called to make a reservation, we were immediately put on hold for a few minutes and then told that they likely wouldn't have space for two diners. However, upon arrival, there were atleast three tables free and it just got emptier as the night went on. However, this is not our main complaint. After waiting for half an hour for our small order, the salmon sashimi appeared to be cut inapropriately. It was stringy and fishy tasting. Unfortunately, it has to be nearer to the worst than the best sashimi we've ever had. The rolls were quite good, but certainly not enough to help us forget what we had just ate. The pricing was quite standard for sushi in Edmonton. Perhaps we just caught them on a bad night. However, we will certainly be choosing Kobe next tome for some real sashimi.

One of the best!. Sushi Wasabi is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Edmonton. They serve traditional Japanese food and they do it very well. Best agedashi tofu in the city.

It's All About the People. I can't imagine going anywhere else for sushi or food than Sushi Wasabi. It's a family affair and second to none anywhere for us. Plain and simply; if you want a taste of Japanese Food but with the politeness and respect of people who have invited you into their culture, take some time to visit them.
Heidi
Best in Edmonton by far!

I don't know much about sushi.... ...but I found this place to offer the best I have ever tasted. And other friends who know sushi better than I, thought it was brilliant too.<br/><br/>The Green Tea ice cream is sublime! So leave some room for pudding!

Great sushi, inside-out avocado/shittake maki was the fave! Good service, small venue so call ahead.

I've been a big fan for the past 12 years. They serve the biggest slices of sashimi and the best tasting chop chop. Love it.
Rob
A Japanese family actually owns this place! Food isn't bad.

Sushi Wasabi is a small but cozy Japanese restaurant located on the south side of town. The restaurant is hidden in a tiny strip mall area (look for the Petro Canada gas station) but is definitely worth checking out. It reminded me of Vancouver as Sushi Wasabi has that cramped, intimate feel to it (to some extent). Does that mean you can skip the trip to Vancouver? Haha, let’s not go overboard with those type of expectations youngin’...

After hearing about how good the place is and how you need reservations or wait for a long time, my love of sushi drove me to visit Sushi Wasabi. The decor was nothing special if not looking a bit run down. The cutlery and plates used were clean and chip free which is great (some asian restaurants have so many chips and scraps and marks it really puts you off your meal) Unfortunately, the sushi here is not cheap at all. After looking at the menu I gulped ( I had hope the price would be at least comparable to Kyoto... it is a bit more expensive in my opinion for the amount of food you get)  Due to not reserving and a long line we finally got to sit down at the sushi bar. Perhaps their food has been hailed as "DELICIOUS" " THE BEST SUSHI" so their service sucks. They speak in Japan

Everybody has a favorite sushi place in Edmonton and Sushi Wasabi is one of mine. New sushi restaurants can pop up here and there but when it comes down to it, it’s hard to beat favorites for a reason! Stellar food (in this case, fresh fish), good speedy service, family-owned, are just the few things I look for in restaurants. Sadly enough, those are the ones that I don’t actually post a lot about. They’re the restaurants that don’t have a lot a hype and are easily missed on big lists, such as Avenue’s Best Restaurants, or the like. So this will save me from answering the common question, “What’s your favorite sushi place in Edmonton” Sushi Wasabi for nigiri sushi and sashimi. Ichiban if I’m feeling like eating rolls… that post will come eventually.

As this was placed in front of me, my eyes sparkled. At $22.50, this was a fabulous price to try out a bunch of different fish.
