The Wasabi is not the biggest, but is the best. Freshest fish in the city and quiet atmosphere with very good service. It' like being home and eating home made food. The prices are reasonable and surprise a lot of people. Check the hours as they are not always open. Serve Japanese food at the Devonian Festival. Enjoy

Here's food for thought. If you could choose (preferably not while on death row), what would your last meal be? Or for something less morbid, what's one food that you can eat for the rest of your life? I'm the type of person to get tired of eating just one thing really easily, but I guess there is one exception to that. You've probably already guessed the answer considering what restaurant we're talking about today.

Top 5, top 5, top 5, top 5

Wasabi still the GOAT in Edmonton for sushi. First plate has the Salmon roe, chop chop, spot prawn, freshwater eel, and toro. These are my top 5. Chop chop always good, probably the only sushi I like that creamy. Salmon roe always tasting sweet when they burst in your mouth. Hahaha. Spot prawn is something everyone should get. Don’t ever get the shitty small shrimp sushi. They are the worst. Freshwater eel (unagi) has such a good flavor and one of the only sushi I liked grilled up. Toro is my go to, and at Wasabi it’s the best. So much flavor in the fat. Fat is tasty all the time. Had to get a second plate cause sushi was too good. Got regular meguro tuna, a piece of seawater eel and mackerel. Seawater eel is less fatty than freshwater eel, also a little fluffier but it’s still aight. I sitll consider it the diet option of eel, a little bland, but still good. Mackerel is dope because it’s one of the sushi that has the skin on it and has that fishy smell and taste. Delicious stuff.

Wasabi might be one of the oldest places in Edmonton. Been going here since I was a kid and it’s still dope AF. It’s usually packed every night of the week for dinner so don’t expect fast service. Expect good food.

I've visited Sushi Wasabi in the past, way before I even had a single review. So I thought it was time to pay them a well deserved visit. Location hasn't changed much; cute little strip mall locale and still Japanese owned and operated. This place is super cozy with a rather small sushi bar. Only gripe I have is that the table seatings are a tad too close. I got super lucky at around 7:15pm on Saturday to get a table in less then 15mins. All the servers here are super pleasant and very attentive.

My girlfriend and I were starving so we wasted no time going through their menu. We started off with their Beef Tataki and that was spectacular. Perfect sear on the outside and their ponzu is super light. And they definitely don't skimp on the meat slices, they loaded our plate up. Next was 14pcs of Assorted Sashimi. The quality of their fish is simply superb. The octopus (tako) was super tender, along with the salmon, yellowtail and the tuna that melts in your mouth.

I got their Wasabi Combination which comes with 28pcs including Eel (unagi), Tuna Belly (toro), Chop Chop, 6pcs of avocado & shiitake roll and shrimp & asparagus. Salmon, tuna, tako and yellowtail make another return for our Nigiri. All the pieces were made beautifully. Their chop chop lacked masago but was nonetheless delicious. And their Unagi literally melts and becomes one with the rice as soon as you put it in your mouth. Their rice is really something; perfectly seasoned. Slightly warm and sweet from the rice vinegar. Me and my girlfriend have a special love for Uni (Sea Urchin) and we ordered 4pcs to finish off our meal. Probably the best bites of Uni I've had in Edmonton at least. Perfectly umami and creamy with the rice, it's a pure mouthgasm. Worth the price of $5.50 per piece.

Sushi Wasabi is by far one of the best places to go to get amazing quality sushi in Edmonton. It's atmosphere is warm & friendly. I just might have to make a few more visits in the near future.

Yum yum. My go to Japanese food place in Edmonton. The rice itself is perfection. Each individual grain is evident and you can tell the sushi was made with great hands. The sashimi is fresh and worth the price every visit.

Expensive, but good sushi always is. Typically a very special occasion place for me because of it, but this is without question as good as you can get for sushi in Edmonton. The place isn't too big, and almost always is packed so reservations are always recommended, even on a weekday. The service has always been prompt and friendly.

We were craving for Sushi on one of our Sunday Dinner meetups; not rolls or tapas but fresh slices of meaty fish on a bed of well prepped rice. Which led us to discover Sushi Wasabi, with incredibly high ratings. Just a few blocks away from Southgate, it’s in a well known little strip mall, in and around Sunterra Market and Quickly!

We got there just a little over an hour before they close, and the restaurant was still quite busy. The space is quite tight, with spacing maximized, and tables squished around every corner possible. Cozy to say the least. Service was attentive, and food came out quickly and smoothly throughout the whole service.

Beef Tataki ($15.00) 5/5 Seared and served with ponzu, the citrus lemon sauce was awesome. Didn’t overpower the actual taste of the beef and it was a hefty amount of pieces too!
Gyoza ($6.50) ⅖ Wasn’t crispy. somewhat soggy; room temperature at best.
Assorted Tempura ($15.00) ⅘ Hefty price tag, but what was given was crispy and batter was seasoned well!
Sushi Combination #8 ($68.00) 5/5 Worth the price on all levels, this alone would have made us satisfied. Tuna,Surf clam and the yellowtail were my favorite. Each piece of fish was a decent size and had a good fish to rice ratio!

Will be back to try more! The menu is quite extensive, and there were a lot of rolls that caught my eye. Beef tataki is a must, that dish alone would have me coming back for sure!

We are huge fans of this restaurant. The service is excellent, of course.

But the food is amazing. We have gone there at least 7-8 times and ordered different things each time. Each time, we have had excellent food.

Legit Japanese family run restaurant, the environment isn't great but the food is authentic, very few places serve aburi(seared) sushi, negitoro(tunabelly) sushi, and blue fin tuna. Price is expensive but worth a try if youre looking for authentic traditional.

Stopped for a sushi supper fix. We shared combo 5,6 yam tempura and gyoza. Our meal was prepared quickly, service was friendly, attentive and chatty and our meal was very good. Crisp tempura, big pieces of fish on the sushi and flavorful pork dumplings. This local, tiny, slightly worn, family operated, restaurant is a food find. Enjoyed our meal! Our next sushi craving will end with a stop here.

Sushi Wasabi is by far the best Japanese restaurant in Edmonton. The food here has time and time again been consistently delicious with the best quality of sushi and sashimi. If you're looking for fairly traditional Japanese sushi and sashimi you'll find it here. This place doesn't have a lot of those fancy (north Americanized rolls) that you'll find in other restaurants. The staff are friendly and the service is good! The specials that they have are great! I would recommend making a reservation as they can get quite busy!

Sushi Wasabi is the only restaurant I will go for sushi in Edmonton. I first started coming here about 2 years ago by a recommendation from a coworker who raved about this place, and am so glad I tried it. They have the most fresh, most flavourful, delicious sushi that I have ever had. I have a list of favourite sushi that I always get and I also like trying whatever they have on special. If you come often enough, and order your favourites every time, the staff actually remember your order so they just ask you if you're okay with the usual, how cool is that! The restaurant however, is tiny and fills up very quickly. I was turned away my first visit because there were simply no seats left; bar was full, all the other tables were either taken or had reservations already so I definitely recommend making reservations at all times. Service is always excellent; staff are attentive, and very friendly. The food can take a bit long to come out sometimes, but it is so worth the wait. I will always come back as long as they stay open! Visited (again) on November, 2015.

Best nigiri in Edmonton. Much better than Mikado. Some of the hot dishes are great too,  particularly the shitake tempura. IMO best sushi in Alberta, since Wa's closed in Calgary. Better sushi than Sushi Bar Zipang in Calgary. Any Calgary peeps out there, I would welcome any Calgary recommendations.

Last week I was in the mood for some fish so me and Jessy decided to go to Sushi Wasabi right after work. It’s located near Southgate Mall in a little strip of shops. We got there right around 5:30PM and it was already starting to get busy so I definitely recommend making a reservation if possible. There’s an ample amount of parking out front, so that is always a plus. I’ve been here multiple times before, and it’s always a debate between here or Ichiban. Ichiban has been closed for some construction, so that made my choice a lot easier.

Food quality varies each visit! Been to this place more than 10 times. Love the service that they provide. The "grandma" there is polite and serves in a very Japanese way! Food is good most of the time! But I went there in new year one time, the food wasn't quite good! I noticed that the old Japanese cook was away! I felt disappointed for the assorted sashimi that I ordered as it only had tuna and salmon 😢

The other night, my friend was craving Japanese food so we went to Sushi Wasabi. It actually felt nice to not pick the food place for once. My friends usually make me pick the place to eat since I'm a "foodie" and it actually gets pretty stressful sometimes!  Sushi Wasabi is located on the southside in a little strip mall area, probably about 2 minutes away from Southgate Mall. It's a small and intimate restaurant that gives off a warm, cozy feel.

Excellent Sushi in Edmonton. It is a definite visit if you are a sushi lover travelling to Edmonton or living in Edmonton.

It's a small restaurant beside farmer's market, small but warm feeling. Service are pretty good.

Menu is not too big and not too small, with new fresh items hand-written on blackboard hanging on the wall, you know what's the most fresh you could get. Salt water Eel is one of the most famous item. Sashimi is fresh, deep fry food is crispy yet covering with right amount of batter.

Give it a try. You will love it.

Absolute best sushi in Edmonton. Finally made it in to check this place out. It's a busy spot and a little cramped; ideally you probably want to make a reservation for dinner on a Friday night. We didn't, but we managed to grab a spot at the bar with a view of the chefs doing their work. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get any better than that. Service was fantastic, efficient, and friendly and the prices were reasonable.

The green tea is on par with the best I've had in Japan myself, as was the vegetable tempura (the batter was perfectly light and crispy) and the agedashi-dofu (Fried Tofu with dashi sauce. They actually garnished the dish with dried dashi, grated daikon, and spring onion, which I've yet to see in Canada before. Amazing!).

We moved on to an assortment of sushi, all of which was exceptionally prepared, with all the flavours proudly represented without being drowned in overwhelming sauces. In particular, the spicy octopus cone, negitoro maki, and the unagi were great. Their hand rolls (cones) are huge; you definitely get your monies worth. The california roll was just okay; I've had better, but only rarely and at one or two other places not in Edmonton.

To wrap things up the lovely woman from the counter with whom my friend from Japan struck up a conversation as dinner concluded recommended the grapefruit jello for dessert, stating that it was her own recipe. In Japan it would more aptly be referred to as Jelly I was told, so don't be fooled by a trade name. It was amazing! Fresh, sweet and yet tart ruby grapefruit riddle a basic gelatin topped with a little whipped cream. It was a simple yet perfect end to an incredible meal.

All in all I had an remarkable experience and I look forward to returning again soon. Yes, the place is owned by a Japanese family and frankly it does make all the difference. It was nice to hear Japanese spoken in the background, it definitely adds a little something special!

What? Japanese owners of a sushi restaurant? Miracles.. This restaurant falls under the category of “if you value good service more than great food, this isn’t the place for you.” We were so offended the first time we went here by the sheer racism of the owners that we almost didn’t go back. But it’s delicious and that is my priority.
If you are not Japanese or a regular you absolutely must be there at 5pm or make a reservation a day in advance. If you don’t, they will treat you like you are the bane of their existence. It’s pretty brutal. As well, if you are a large person (not just fat, but tall) they stare at you like you have a 5th head and it takes you twice as long to become a “regular” so beware.
Moving along, my favourite place to sit in any sushi restaurant is the sushi bar. I love watching them work; and despite the rather rude waitresses and owner, the 2 sushi chefs are charming and interesting to chat with and watch.
When you look over the menu you’ll notice they lack a variety of rolls. But what they have is amazing. My fiancé is deeply in love with their house California rolls (which are nearly the size of your face and have the perfect touch of grapefruit (I don’t even like grapefruit and I think it’s delicious), avocado and asparagus.). While my favourite is the chopchop/flying fish roe cone.
Once they have deemed you a regular you are allowed to ask for substitutions and special made rolls. I often ask for the tuna roll with avocado.
So, then you get your food (after a while, admittedly), and you eat away and your drinks are regularly refilled even if you are a (gasp) outsider. And the closer you get to having to pay the nicer the waitresses are to you (funny.) and then you go to pay and it is a surprisingly low amount for what you get. The only items on the menu that are unfairly priced are the appetizers. Just avoid that mess of a page. The octopus balls are pretty good, as is the goma-ae, but definitely not worth the cost. Stick to miso soup, tempura and sushi/rolls.
As a disclaimer, neither my fiancé or I have ordered salmon. He is too busy ordering the California rolls and I don’t like salmon in the raw. After reading the other reviews here, we will both be avoiding it.
To sum up, they make great sushi (see disclaimer), at decent prices with bad, racist service.
Overall, it’s still the best sushi in the city so I’ll always be back. (And I’m at regular status now so my service is GREAT. :P)

Very impressived with their menu and the atmosphere of the restaurant. The waiters were nice and the food came with 20 minutes of ordering. Though they were slow with the unagi don everything tasted good. The California roll was huge and filling. On the other hand the sashimi was only sub-par compared to other places. The unagi don was great and was grilled to the point where the oil came out of the eel and into the rice. By doing so the rice was rich with the eel flavour.

Overall very impressed with the food and service.

Yummy sashimi, but limited selection. I ordered take out from Sushi Wasabi last week with a friend. I ordered their tuna sashimi, and she had two rolls. We both really enjoyed our selections. My sashimi was kept nice and cold even though it was take out, and was very fresh. They also have the option of ordering half orders of sushi and sashimi which is nice if you don't need a huge meal. The pricing was also fair, and pretty typical of other sushi restaurants in Edmonton.

The downside to Sushi Wasabi is their selection of rolls. They have more basic types (avocado, uni etc.) and do not have any specialty rolls. The food they do have is delicious, but they could definitely benefit from an expansion of their menu. I am sure that their sushi chefs could handle some more complicated rolls judging from how well they prepared their existing items. I will definitely return, and it is nice to have such a delicious sushi restaurant so close to home!

After seeing all the positive reviews about this place I decided to give it a try. I went there for lunch and it was pretty busy so I was excited. I shared a Ebro box that had mediocre teriyaki chicken. The salad, tempura and rolls were just ok. One of the spicy tuna rolls I ordered was very poorly put together, the rice was all over the place and wasn't Ben in the shape of a circle. This place was not worth the drive at all, I've had much better

P: !. As far as eating sushi in edmonton goes, sushi wasabi is one of the best places to get an "authentic" japanese meal.

i've been there a few times over this past summer and the service and food has been consistently and reliably good. as commented below, all the cooks and servers are actually japanese.

freshness of fish: about as fresh as you can reliably get in edmonton. 4/5
portion sizes: very fairly sized, imo. i don't feel like they skimp at all. 4/5
price/value: i'd say it's a bit expensive, but not completely unreasonable. 3.5/5

I've had their beef tataki (loaded with lots of green onions, sliced thinly and soaking in their vinegary sauce), tempura (always piping hot and not too oily when we get it, crunchy, their vegetable tempuras have vegetables such as onions, broccoli, potato, which some other restaurants don't do i've noticed.), chirashi (always a good thing to start off with if you want a sampling of a restaurant's sashimi & sushi rice), california rolls (i can't resist getting these), and plenty of their sushi combination plates.

i find the best value in their sushi platters, especially when you're sharing with 2 - 4 people; you can easily split the sushi pieces so that each person gets one type.

man i went on a bit of a rambling tangent here, but the bottom line is: sushi wasabi could benefit from fresher ingredients, but hey we're in edmonton. otherwise it's very good.

2016 Review:

It's been 5 years since I've been forced to come here to pay high prices.  Several things have changed.  Service has gotten way better.  The prices are here to stay.  The menu has gotten a lot more diverse.  It is authentically Japanese and I have been to Japan and back to verify that :).  It's all about the ingredients and preparation methods.  This place has it pat down.  This is a great place to splurge yourself if you can't make it to Yuzen, Izakaya Tomo, Ikki Izakaya, or Dorinku.  Those are my "authentic" Japanese places for Edmonton.  I can't elaborate further otherwise Zomato may find it offensive to some audiences.  Viewer discretion is advised. :D

2011 Review:

Huh... so this is what REAL REAL Japanese food is eh?. Comparing to the "not-as-authentic" I love sushi, Kyoto, Hakone, Sakana, etc... I'd rather eat the non-authentic stuff that has more variety, taste better, and is quite a bit cheaper.

I don't mean to hate on this place. This is a great Japanese mom and pop family restaurant. The service really sucks, especially with that one guy. With the high food prices and the crappy service this is the only restaurant in which I tip 10% consistently... most other places get 15% or more.

The food does truly taste fresh. I'm no sashimi expert so to me it tastes just the same as any other place. My friends that are experts say it's a lot better here though. I almost feel that I want the food to taste better because of the price I'm paying. You guys know what I mean? The effect of "I'm paying so much it must be awesome so I'll savour every last bite..."

All in all, I feel that the servers are way too cocky for their own good. I also feel that my business is not wanted here because they have so many customers loving the place already. Sushi Wasabi's owners have been spoiled silly by customers. I will never return again on my own unless my friends beg me to come.

The BEST Sushi in the City. I absolutely love Sushi Wasabi, I first discovered it when I lived on the south side and it fast became my favorite. I moved to a new area a couple months ago, and searched high and low for a new sushi spot that could replace my favorite southside spot. No place even came close to comparing. Their food is absolutely delicious, and although the service can be a little slow at times, I am willing to accept that, for the high quality of food. Even though I have moved about 20 - 30 minutes away, I still make that long drive to get the best sushi rather than be stuck with the mediocre stuff I have found in my new area of the city.

One of the few JAPANESE (not Chinese run) gold mines.. Wasabi is at the top of ACTUAL Japanese run restaurants in Edmonton. Many Japanese restaurants here, but if you like your Japanese food cooked by Chinese and Vietnamese non-trained or concerned about the Japanese culture people, then go see them and save a few bucks.
Wasabi is tops with Koto Japanese Restaurant in St. Albert. Mikado is a close runner up. Mom and Pop, and all homemade. Their Sushi is the freshest and most flavourful. Not a complete menu, but mostly for sushi lovers. All Japanese service with the expected courtesies ever few moments. .

Nice fresh food. Had myself a solo dinner (business trip) at Sushi Wasabi and enjoyed the mozuku salad (seaweed) and the unagi donburi (hopefully I got that right). The server had the kindness to point out that the mozuku can be a bit slimy to some (good tip for those with texture issues), but it was lovely to me. The vinegar dressing was just nice, not overpowering. The unagi (bbq eel) was awesome. The fish was in no way overcooked and the sauce was flavourful, and also not overpowering. It was a nice light meal (after hefty business trip/training lunches), but if your appetite's a bit bigger, I'd order something else too.

I noticed one minor service issue at the neighbouring table where a dish was brought out well after the patrons had finished their meal; they naturally turned it away. That sort of thing has happened to me in other places and gets my feathers ruffled, but I had a simple enough order that it was no problem. I don't know that I saw too many other 'ruffled' patrons though, so it might've been a "one of".

It's a small-ish place, btw, so either call ahead or consider sitting at the bar if it's busy.

The best Japanese restaurant in Edmonton.. We have tried many Japanese restaurants in Edmonton but none are close to Wasabi. You can tell just by the texture of the rice in any of their menu items. The rice is not stuck together like a hunk of soft carbohydrate but is tasty and the individual grains are distinguishable. Most "Japanese" restaurants the rice is very poorly cooked. I assure you I know rice because I have been eating it for nearly all my life.
The size of the fish in their sushi is by far the largest and tastiest in the city. If you are looking for good Japanese food then go to Wasabi and don't be ripped off by the imitators.

Don't forget to try their coffee jello or grapefruit jello for dessert! The grapefruit jello has real grapefruit in it and I assume the coffee is made from real coffee. It is a nice treat to end a meal but not too heavy like most desserts.

Fresh, great service... best in edmonton. Those who gave this a lukewarm to not very good review puzzle me... especially the condescending comment that those who love it don't know sushi. I live in Vancouver... and Wasabi is better than many places here. It is very basic and not big on wow factor or creativity, but fresh and dependable and owned/operated by lovely Japanese family. My favourite in Edmonton easily.

4/5 for Sushi Wasabi. I'd heard from a few sources that this was a great place for sushi, so I thought I'd give it a shot!
It's a tiny location in a strip mall, but it's one of the good strip malls that contains other high-end businesses like Sunterra Market (the ritzy grocery store) and Jack's Grill (an Original Fare restaurant).
I've also heard that this restaurant is actually owned by a Japanese family! That's a huge plus, I think. The sense of authenticity is pleasing.
Inside, the place is cute. There's a sushi bar and a handfull of tables. There are screens separating some of the different areas and Japanese decorations and art on the walls, but it's not overdone. I feel like if they upped the decor a little - maybe a little classier - it would be a REALLY contending place to all others.

We got seated near the back and started flipping through the menu. We were promptly brought hot cloths, which is a touch that I always look for in an authentic Japanese restaurant. We also ordered a pot of Green Tea (1.50$).
I was a little tossed up. When I'm just ordering for myself at a sushi place, I tend to like to get a combo so that I'll be able to get some variety. All I really wanted was some miso soup, sashimi, and a spicy tuna roll... But none of those come in a one-person-friendly quantity. So combo it was.

I ordered the Bento Box (24.80$), as it did contain many of my favourite things.
It started with miso soup, which was mostly standard except for the little pieces of fried tofu in it, which was great as opposed to the usual un-fried, white cube kind.
The wait was a little while, but I only could imagine that they were busy preparing everything, so I didn't mind. Soon my Bento came, which included tempura, nigiris & maki, cooked salmon, some kind of a sunomono-esque spinach salad, some purple things that tasted pickled - which I just ate and didn't ask questions, sashimi, and rice.

I've gotten a little bored of tempura, but I liked that this one contained some items that weren't typical - zucchini, broccoli. I was also very pleased with the nigiris. I'm very picky about the fish to rice ratio, and they were doing it up to my standards here, which is rare. There was much more fish then rice, and it came with a tasty crab (pollock) one that I've never seen anywhere else. The cooked salmon was pretty uninteresting to me and I didn't finish it. There was nothing wrong with it, but I wasn't in a sushi place for COOKED salmon... Lastly, the sashimi was great. The chunks were large and fresh - no complaints there.

I was very satisfied with this meal! While I still have other sushi places on my list to try, I think that I would put this one in the lead at the moment.

One of the best!. Sushi Wasabi is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Edmonton. They serve traditional Japanese food and they do it very well. Best agedashi tofu in the city.

It's All About the People. I can't imagine going anywhere else for sushi or food than Sushi Wasabi. It's a family affair and second to none anywhere for us. Plain and simply; if you want a taste of Japanese Food but with the politeness and respect of people who have invited you into their culture, take some time to visit them.

I've been a big fan for the past 12 years. They serve the biggest slices of sashimi and the best tasting chop chop. Love it.

Sushi Wasabi is a small but cozy Japanese restaurant located on the south side of town. The restaurant is hidden in a tiny strip mall area (look for the Petro Canada gas station) but is definitely worth checking out. It reminded me of Vancouver as Sushi Wasabi has that cramped, intimate feel to it (to some extent). Does that mean you can skip the trip to Vancouver? Haha, let’s not go overboard with those type of expectations youngin’...

Everybody has a favorite sushi place in Edmonton and Sushi Wasabi is one of mine. New sushi restaurants can pop up here and there but when it comes down to it, it’s hard to beat favorites for a reason! Stellar food (in this case, fresh fish), good speedy service, family-owned, are just the few things I look for in restaurants. Sadly enough, those are the ones that I don’t actually post a lot about. They’re the restaurants that don’t have a lot a hype and are easily missed on big lists, such as Avenue’s Best Restaurants, or the like. So this will save me from answering the common question, “What’s your favorite sushi place in Edmonton” Sushi Wasabi for nigiri sushi and sashimi. Ichiban if I’m feeling like eating rolls… that post will come eventually.

As this was placed in front of me, my eyes sparkled. At $22.50, this was a fabulous price to try out a bunch of different fish.

Best place for sushi in Edmonton hands down! Perfectly cooked and seasoned sushi rice, freshest quality fish you’ll get in the city, the toro (and salmon belly too) is buttery and mouth watering. We always get the beef tataki, nigiri, and a few rolls: shrimp tempura roll, avocado shiitake roll, small California, and negitoro. Everything is delicious. We do takeout often but love that they’re back open for dine in!

The menu seems more simple and traditional than the usual Japanese restaurants in the city. Service is great; their kitchen is small and the chefs seem to be careful so it's not rushed. It is a very small restaurant (maybe 5 tables), so reservations are highly recommended.

The sashimi is fresh, sushi is tasty and the rolls are put together well! I especially love the rice they use, it's a perfect combo in a roll or with a nice slice of fish on top. Service is quick and very friendly. Highly recommend reservations as it's tough to get a table during the evening.
