Review Bistro Praha - Edmonton

John Sparks
This place was great. The sauerkraut soup was excellent. So was the Cordon Bleu… although very thin, the ham and Edam cheese really make the dish. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would come back! (Was busy on game night… make a reservation)

It was excellent experience, with great and tasty European cousine. After 5 years in Canada I finally found Czech restaurant with authentic atmosphere. Service was best, friendly and fast!
Summer Dragonfly
So glad I found this place. I felt like I was transported back to Europe. Ambiance and furnishings very reminiscent of a German restaurant I used to frequent quite often in Frankfurt. I started with the sourcrout soup and was amazed how good it was with those chunky bits of double smoked bacon. The schnitzel and goulash are amazing. Fork tender tips in a rich gravy with a hint of caraway. Top it off with a refreshing Czech beer and you have a perfect meal. Looking forward to going back next time I'm in town. Impeccable friendly service too I might add.
Tino Brelak
My favourite place to eat in Edmonton. The cuisine is authentic Czech. Their goulash is particularly excellent. One feels like he's somewhere in Praha.

This place is like a magical teleport to my favourite country in the world. Felt just like home eating the delicious authentic food. The chlebíčky, smoked pork shoulder and crepe a la františek are must tries. Thank you to these wonderful people for making my birthday dinner so memorable 🇨🇿

A beautiful cozy spot in an unassuming building downtown. You walk in and are warmly greeted and made to feel at home. A diverse range of diners when we went, some families, some young couples, some young at heart. We enjoyed the Prague Egg (loved the potato salad) and smoked salmon to start. I would recommend the egg over the salmon which wasn't anything you haven't experienced elsewhere. Mains were the pork shoulder and chicken Alcron. With sauerkraut of course! (Delish). The highlight was the Valentine's dessert of raspberry mousse. Exquisite!

Stopped in for lunch while downtown. Restaurant was clean and well maintained. Food was hot, fresh and super flavorful. The marinated tomatoes in the starter salad were a wonderful touch. Potato salad was well seasoned, light and fresh.

Wow what a gem we happened upon! The menu is large, the food amazing and the atmosphere so charming and European. I loved the classical music playing, the smaller quiet ambiance, and the healthy portion sizes. Will definitely recommend and return!

First visit ever to the Bistro for me.
Not what I expected when we walked in the door. Restaurant is supper crowded and soooooo loud. We get told by the waitress that we can choose that one or than one for our table with our reservation. Who talks to customers that way? After choosing our own table we wait for the same waitress to come with menus. She leaves without taking our drink order. After several minutes she’s back tells us he specials and takes our drink order. Drinks arrive and we order our meals.
Salads arrive first. Simple tomato lettuce and grated cheese. Cheese spot tray to share is next followed by our entrees.
Duck is over cooked, served with check dumplings that have the texture of sliced bread and sauerkraut . Arctic char looks fabulous and is cooked well. Schnitzel is tough, over cooked and has a disappointing flavor served with a boring potato salad. Schnitzel is suppose to be the house speciality?
Apple strudel to share. Apples are still crunchy and pastry is flaky. Does not make up for the rest of our meal.
We will not be back

Service was excellent. I loved the sauerkraut soup, fried cheese and crepes. The soup was unique, flavourful and filling. It felt like I was in Prague

Amazing restaurant!
The food is delicious and the staff is truly dedicated and very friendly.
We've been there a few times and always left with a full belly and a smile on our faces. Their schnitzel is a must have! Location is excellent as it is in the heart of Edmonton Downtown.
Must try!

Food was good, service was good, prices not bad, and was fast! I would return and recommend! I had the Wiener schnitzel which comes with potato salad and either green or tomato salad - I had green. It was good but not amazing.

Great little spot downtown. The food is always great and the service friendly. I always have a good time when I visit. Love it. Location is great too especially for an after work dinner.

I really adore their crepe desserts. I first tried them when I visited during a Dishcrawl event several years ago and have only eaten a main course there once since that time... and I insisted on having more dessert as my memories of having it the first time were just that delicious!

The food quality here has always been high. The menu is almost always the same, making it a local favorite. The best dish, in my view, is the steak tartar with the crepes for dessert (especially crepe nadia) coming in second. The staff are always friendly and the owner has a great attitude.
James Woodrow
Awesome central location just north of Jasper Avenue. The beef tartar here is stellar and pairs so well with the slices of garlic toast - simple yet delicious. The wienerschnitzel is also simple and great. A staple when I want something that is not the homogenous fusion stuff offered by so many restaurants these days.

A great place to meet before or after attending a great evening out at a concert or just a movie .Wiz on by for a quick Weiner schnitzel and a strudel.

This is the most classic place. I have been here multiple times and it's always the best. The schnitzel cordon bleu is to die for. I always go in saying I will try something new but I can't because it is so good. The servers are amazing as well they remember you and let you enjoy your meal without being too nosy they always come to the table at the right time. I love this place. I would highly recommend it!

Quaint. Good food. Not the most amazing decor, but the food makes up for the lack-luster venue. Certainly worthy of a chance.
Wife and I rolled the dice a while back, and were pleasantly surprised. She had the lamb, I tried Schnitzel for the first time. We enjoyed our experience.
Had reservation and had to wait 5 min to be seated which was fine. The knowledge of the server was great. We asked for her recommendation for beer and we had two varieties of Czech beer and they both were fantastic. The meals came with salad which was fresh but not overly exciting. Tasted good. The pork schnitzel was cooked to perfection but was very bland and had no flavor. The sauerkraut was delicious. The dumplings were traditional Czech dumplings which is like a bland white bread which were not my preference.
The place was extremely packed and the table of four we sat at was technically for 2 with a leaf so both large men had to straddle the leg. There was no room to sit and one person had to sit at an angle even to fit. Very crowded...felt as if they were jamming the tables in just to have more business. Because of this we didn't get dessert. Overall not my cup of tea!

Horrible service, horrible tables, horrible experience. Went there for dinner tonight, the experience was horrible from the moment we walked through the door to the time we left the restaurant. We heard this place was busy so made a reservation when we got there the guy at the door was unfriendly. Did not even say hi, pointed us to a table in the back with menus already placed on the table. We were left there for 10 minutes then the server came and rudely asked "you ready to order?". She was so rude that she didn't bother saying hi or asked us what we wanted to drink. She took our order and went away. Came back a couple minutes later to drop off their so call "salad of tomatoes with onions". She did not mentioned anything about the two types of salads that were available. A few minutes later she dropped off our food and walked away, did not even bother come back and ask if things are okay or if we need anything else. (The typical service you would get at any restaurants). When we were done she gave us the bill, we asked for the machine she literally punched the bill total into the machine and walked away!!!! I was left there to operate the machine myself and got my own receipt. The total time for our meal was 35 minutes. It was as if they didn't want us there and didn't bother with the service

Overall- the food was alright, but over priced, the portion was small, it was not worth the $25 for a schnitzel dish.

The service was absolutely horrible!!!!!! The chairs were so high that my legs couldn't even fit under the table (and I am a small person).

I would never go back nor recommend this place to anyone else!!!

Overpriced and no taste. If you have no taste buds left and money to dispose of go here.

Great service... Good food. We were happy with the food we ordered. Had goulash and schnitzel similar to what we ate in prague on a recent visit... Service was excellent!
Moreiracathy
Didn't like anything we ordered.. To begin we got an open face sandwich, that we would told were starters. And it turned out to a piece of bread with salami. It was good but diffently not worth the price for a piece of bread only for one person.

Then we got Hungarian sausages and the spaghettini with salami flakes. The waiter should of mentioned that the sausages was like an appetizer dish. And the spaghettini was dry and tasteless. It tasted like pasta that just got taken out with no seasonings or sauce what so ever and put salami pieces on it.

Then for dessert we had a crepe "Henry Christian" it was so bad. It tasted like it was microwaved. The kiwi inside was super hot, and it made it sour tasting and soggy. I guess I didnt know there fruits were all warmed up in the crepes. Most of the ones I have the crepe is warm the fillings are cold. The orange liqueur did not compliment it at all it tasted even worse. So I basically just ate the whip cream on the plate at least that was good.

I didn't really like the environment either: we felt rushed, cause the waiter kept eyeing our table to give away. People come in asking for a seat and the other half of the restaurant you could clearly see 5 empty tables and they wouldn't sit the people down. We were at the restaurant for 1 hr 30 mins and when we left those tables were still open.

So we didn't like our first experience there, I probably won't go there again.

Goulash with Dumplings.... Simply Delicious!. Started out with Czech Beer; cold cuts meat plate with homemade potatoe salad, ahheeem which is better than moms! Then capping the evening with the Beef Goulash Soup which isn't a appetizer soup like most places. This one will fill you up as it's a solid main course meal! Be prepared! Rating service 10/10, Food 9/10 only because the ham on colds cuts meat plate was tad fatty for my liking. Anyhow... Still old faithful, love this place!

Decent German food but nothing special. First off the positive, the service was excellent. Our server was very attentive and prompt. He has a great personality and worked the table well. Now for the food. I had the goulash which was very tasty. Broth was thick and flavorful. Meat was plentiful but could have been a bit more tender but overall I liked it quite a bit. I also had the pork hocks full serving. It came with a huge portion of sauerkraut and some fresh bread. There was no bone instead three decent size portions of ham however this is where I have problem. Without the bone or skin it was just three pieces of ham, there wasn't anything special and for $22 I expected more. The sides were plain maybe some potatoes or something rather than bread and sauerkraut . It wasn't bad but it didn't make me good yum! I had the apple strudel . I'm a bit weak here as I haven't had a lot to compare with before but it was tasty without being too sweet. Ample whipped cream, portion could be a bit larger but it wasn't bad. Decent desert.
Overall it's not a bad restaurant and the service was very good however the food wasn't spectacular, solid but I wasn't incredibly impressed. I would give it a 3 out of 5.

Bistro Praha I'm never disappointed with! The food is fantastic the service is quick and friendly. I had their wiener schnitzel cordon bleu, perfect! So thin and crisp cooked perfectly. The potato salad is to die for. I will always go back.

Just a huge disappointment. My bf and I went here the other night after a friend said it was good and it got good reviews on Urbanspoon. I called that afternoon to book a reservation for the evening. When we got there we said we had a reservation. Somehow though, we weren't on the list! The hostess looked at us like we were crazy, did not apologize that our reservation never got written down, but they had one table available so they let us take it.
The table was uncomfortable, I could barely fit my legs under it and I'm pretty small. I know they're going for an antique look to the place but it just looks cheap, and the chairs are not antique, just old and rickety and they look like they were from an old Chinese restaurant.
Our waiter was not friendly at all, he didn't even introduce himself, just took our orders, and even questioned what we were getting with "really...?".
We got the fried breaded cheese to start, which was pretty unimpressive. We then ordered the half portion of steak tartare with green salad, and the Wiener schnitzel with potato salad.
I got my "green salad" within a minute of ordering. It was so bad. Chopped romaine with some grated cheese and bottled zesty Italian dressing. How hard is it to make your own viniagrette? The salad was swimming in store bought dressing, they put way too much on.
The tartare was decent, and my boyfriend liked his Wiener schnitzel ad potato salad. After we had finished, a dessert menu was thrown on our table without a word. We got the strawberry crepe to share. It came out in less than a minute, and it was alright.
We paid and left, and all we got was a polite nod from our server. I am so disappointed with this place. I'm not sure why so many people like it, the atmosphere is dreadful, the tables uncomfortable, and the service unapologetic and not friendly at all. Food is average, barely, and way overpriced.
Will not be back.

The service was great and the food was so good that it brought me back to my childhood, the cook did such a great job, can't wait to go back. 10/10

No Svickova and no beer on tap? do prdele.... I would actually come here more often if it had one of the most obvious, standard Czech dishes ever: Svickova . Also, it's pretty ridiculous that there is no beer on tap and that a bottle of Pilsner is 7 or so dollars (the Accent Lounge off Whyte has it on tap for the same price). I do find the service pretty Czech (i.e. they ignore you the whole time) which I enjoy, but is probably frustrating for Canadians. Overall, I think it needs to stop wanting to be Continental Treat II and just face facts and be a regular hospoda. If it did that I would be there every week.

What an absolute disappointment. Here's how my "Bistro Praha" experience went down. After years of my boyfriend and I saying "we have got to try this place", we decided to go there after a few other restaurants in the area were fully booked. Entering, the people ahead were seated and the two of us waited to be acknowledged. After a few minutes we were asked if we had a reservation and then told there was only table for four available and awkwardly bumbled around as if he would accommodate us. "5 minutes" he said. Then two people entered behind us, announced they had a reservation, and were quickly led to the only table left. "5 minutes" we were told again. 10 minutes later a table for two had left. 5 minutes later I peeked around the corner to see it already wiped down and set. "We're next" I thought.

Nope.

10-15 minutes later and nobody had led us to that table. Another table for two cleared. Then a table for four cleared. The two of us were sitting opposite each other in the small entrance where the host and waiters had to move through. They saw us. They just entirely forgot about us.

My first experience at this "bistro" and were were ignored and forgotten. At least 15 minutes after our tar was ready we sat there staring at it while the host filled water glasses, and thanked other guests as they left, and had entirely forgotten about us. Utterly insulting.

I was not about to do the host's job for him and say "ahem? This is when you serve us?". Especially not after how he treated us.

Will we back back? Nope. Plenty of other restraints in Edmonton who care about customers.

Protip: Continental Treat on Whyte is a fantastic European place with the best Tartar in the city. Go there first. Sylvester (the owner) does not treat customers the way Bistro Praha did.
Fran
We ate there as a group if 4. the service was great and the food as well. we had the weiner schnitzel and the trout as entree. this place has the best schnitzel ever. the banana crepes for dessert was awesome.
Andrew Hnatuk
Great food and atmosphere. Try the schnitzel, it's fantastic!

I prefer their old location on Rice Howard Way. Current location lacks character. Food is still good, especially the crepes for desert. Potato salad is amazing! Small, intimate, European restaurant, can't go wrong.

Bistro Praha,EXCELLENT. I been to Bistro many times,I always enjoyd the restaurant so I decided to bring friends from out of town. We went friday night, glad we made reservation as the place was packed. We started with wine, scallops, steak tartare and smoked salmon. It was amazing. The steak tartare is to die for,the scallops melted in my mouth, salmon was nice and fresh. For main course we had schnitzel, goose, pork hock(sour krout is just like back home) and chicken. The tomato salad that they bring with every meal was so good, the food was amazing, everything tasted just like it always did,.My friends loved it and Bistro Praha did not disappoint.Service was friendly and fast. The room is comfortable, cozy and some pretty famous people go there as hockey players were sighning a chairs. The waitress told us its a tradition they been doing for years.(not just hockey players)Anyways our friends were full, happy, glad we choose the Bistro Praha to dine at.We will be back soon as I am craving the goose already.Did not have room for deserts.Plese note to make a reservation and go hungry, portions are big ,.
BananaRocket
Good Goose Grub. Service was good, a bit abrupt but it was fast.

Room was full of over sized art from the owners travels. Looks over the top and cluttered but it works.

Portions are bigger, but not too big.

Two big highlights for me was the smoked ham hock and the roast goose. The ham hock was tender, fatty and meaty so good. This has got to be one of the few places in town to make roast goose and they nailed it.

A slight negative is that they really cut back on the beer selection to just the very main stream Euro brands. It time pour the Coors light down the drain and put a erdinger dunkel on the shelf.
Anna Maria Manalo
Underwhelmed. Wonderful ambiance and classical music soundtrack; however the wine was old and my friends pasta dish was basically plain spaghetti with olive oil. She ousted it with the pepper and Parmesan shakers
Zirto Yinr
Classic Slovac. We enjoyed the sole & slaw

My fav resto. I love their food 10/10 *****
Lettuce Eat
Czech it out. This restaurant specializing in traditional Czech Cuisine is truly a hidden gem in downtown Edmonton. I have been here on multiple occasions and have had the luxury of trying their many dishes.
The Filet of Sole is great. Pan-fried in olive oil and butter...some may say it is too greasy but to me, it was perfect. The fish itself is moist and the flavor is subtle but that just brings out the natural flavor of the fish. It comes with sautéed mushrooms and pan fried potatoes. I also tried the Rainbow Trout "Jizerka" - not bad but I personally prefer the sole because I typically dont like my fish with the head and tail in-tact.
The Grilled Chicken "Alcron" is tasty. It is grilled perfectly and retains its moisture so it was tender. You definitely notice the high quality and freshness of the ingredients.
The Wiener Schnitzel "Cordon Bleu" is adequately sized and does not fall short on flavor. It is essentially a deep fried pork fillet with ham and cheese inside. Delicious if you like fried food.
The "Cikanska Jehla" which is a beef tenderloin and ham skewer with sautéed vegetables is rich in flavor but a bit on the chewy side. Overall, the dish is good.
The Steak a la Tartare is also noteworthy - seasoned with the appropriate spices but not overpowering. However, it needs more garlic. A downside to this dish is the rye bread that accompanies it - saturated in butter. It was way too greasy. I would've preferred baked crostini. The half-order is more than enough for 1 person.

For dessert, try their Banana Crepe with cooked bananas. Not too rich, just right.

Service - attentive and warm staff that strive to give you a pleasant dining experience, very open to substitutions/modifications, fast service. 4/5
Ambience - outdated decor and furniture, quiet/older demographic. 2.5/5
Food - fresh and local ingredients, excellent quality, generous portions. 4/5

Delightful "real food' fare. From "Jim'', who took our reservation and promised to help our group of seven forget the miserable performance of our CFL Riders (Oct. 13 game), to our Roberto-Benigni reminiscent server, who worked hard to be attentive and polite, to the sumptuous schnitzel, wild boar and chicken dishes that drew top marks from all, our Praha experience was wonderful. Keep doing what your doing, folks. We'll be spreading the word here in Toon Town.

Mission accomplished, Jim. Big thanks to you and the staff.
Christine
Had the duck and fish. Fish was mediocre. Duck was yummy. Sauerkraut and sides were very yummy. Service was really crumby. Waited for 20 minutes to order dessert, then they had us move tables to accommodate a large group. They completely ignored us after that. Another 20 minutes and we had to catch our server to ask for the bill. The eye contact thing was not working to get his attention.
Overall, I you like a good schnitzel, it's a pretty good place, but the staff was very stressed out, so it wasn't a pleasant evening.
Jibberjabber
Good European style menu, despite being meat and potato based. There roast duck was moist, crispy skinned and reasonably priced. The half portion was surprisingly large, but it's side salad was mediocre. Escargot was small but tender, not chewy.

But the service was severely lacking. No one came to ask us about our meal and our empty drinks did not get refilled though the waiter passed by our table to take away the appetizer plate and drop off the main course. Tried asking for a refill but the waiter did not come within our sight until he handed us the bill. Bad service means a 3/5 rating in my book despite the tasty food.
Bobo
Nom nom nom. Sooooooo good! Thanks to random bro outside Korean restuarant who recommended this place! Definitely try the steak tartar thing. Lamb also good, but prefer the weiner schnitzel
IChang
Fantastic crepes. Came here ONLY for crepes, as I had heard of only great things regarding their desserts. Upon actually reading their full menu, I immediately held regrets for not coming earlier and having a full meal.

Anyways, both the banana and strawberry crepes that I tried were perfect. The fruit were swimming in a perfectly caramelized sauce, wrapped in a crispy/fluffy (yes, both at the same time) crepe and topped with generously thick whip cream. Very rarely have I had a crepe done this well.

The decor is open and clean, and the service although rushed was still acceptable. Next time I'm in Edmonton I'll try to stay for a full meal.

One of Edmontons best you won't be disappointed!

Okay Dining Experience, Will be Back. My first dining experience at Bistro Praha was good, but I'm not entirely convinced yet.
I really, really love the atmosphere and look of the place. The service was awesome too!
The tomato salad that came with my dish was unreal - super simple, but the tomatoes really stood out and had so much flavour.
As a schnitzel fiend though, I was a little disappointed with Bistro Praha's. I didn't hate it - but it didn't compare to anything that I've had in Germany or Austria. I guess that comparison might be a bit unfair. It was just disappointing after convincing myself that I was going to finally get to have great schnitzel again! The schnitzel wasn't oily at all but tasted quite bland and tough.
The bite of dessert I stole from my boyfriend was super tasty.
So in all, I'll definitely go back to Bistro Praha but I'll order something other than the schnitzel.
Joe
Ain't what it used to be........ Ate there before and was very happy, but tonight I was dissapointed. Starting from the service, to the quality of food. The lamb was over cooked and seemed deep fried, the potatoe salad tasted pre-peeled. Overall food experience: prepared without care and love. Do not be fooled by the name this is not the original Bisto Praha.

Loved it. It's simple real food made delicious.. Go for the tomato salad.

Average Food. I came here on a Friday night 2 friends around 6pm, and we were able to get a table for 3 right away.

My friend raved about the duck - but I wasn`t in the mood for duck.

Instead I had their salmon fish special of the night, and it was pretty bland and average. I didn`t know why so many people said this place was so good.

The waitress did not offer good service and did not offer us bread. I was pissed off when I left the restaurant, realizing that everyone else around us got bread.

I wont be returning to this overpriced place for just average food.
Love Bistro Praha
A definite fan of Bistro Praha. My boyfriend and I were told by a coworker of mine to go to Bistro Praha. This is where we had our first date.. before dinner, we went to the Winspearto see this amazing pianist William Joseph.
The ambience was lovely, the service was amazing, and the food was different, and delicious. Mouth watering. My boyfriend and I ordered different entrees, and shared because we enjoyed both so much. he had the chicken and I had the schnitzel(they serve the best potato salad ever with the schnitzel!). We don't drink alcoholic beverages, so our server brought us these really delicious mocktails, which we appreciated.
They had nice classical music playing and the artwork in the restaurant was stunning.
My boyfriend and I have been dating for 5 months, and are returning tomorrow for Valentine's dinner. We are both looking so forward to having another wonderful experience there.
I would suggest this restaurant to anyone who wants to enjoy good food, a nice, classy, yet casual environment, and a very friendly atmosphere.
ENJOY!

Best restaurant in the city. Period.. I've been going to the Bistro Praha for a while now, and I am never disappointed. The food is simple, yet absolutely excellent and well executed.

The schnitzel is the best I've ever had and is very fluffy and light, and is not greasy at all. Even the schnitzel at Spago is not as good as this one. You also get quite a bit. I also have to admit, that I'm not the biggest fan of potato salad but I am hooked on the Bistro Praha's. The addition of a salad at the start of the meal is the perfect touch as well. The Fried Cheese and the Steak Tartar are also extremely good as well.

The crepes for desert are also some of the best I've ever had. Even in Paris and in Europe it is hard to get as good crepes as these.

One other thing of note is the service. Best service in the city hands down. You are never left waiting and the waiters and waitresses are always very efficient.

I've been to pretty much all the top end restaurants in the city, as well as a lot in other cities such as Las Vegas and the Bistro Praha is always one of the highest on the list.

If you ever get the opportunity to go here, they please do yourself a favor and go. One of my all time favorite restaurants. It is consistently busy and is a true establishment in Edmonton for a reason. 10/10.

First time back after 20 years. Just moved back to edmonton after 22years...loved every and each morsel of my dinner

I went for lunch on Saturday! Very busy, excellent service, very very good food! Nice place to watch people! Could only have been better if my date showed up and more garlic in the tartare!!!! Excellent place!!!!

Glad It's Back. This is another old favourite. I first started frequenting Bistro Praha in about 1979. I fell in love with the fried cheese, and the love affair remains unabated though now with age, I no longer order fried potatoes as a side.

Bistro Praha still serves a great chicken at lunch. Their fried trout is wonderful as well, as is their schnitzel.

Bad service - server never came back after our table got food. She never came and asked if everything was ok, not even once yet she went to other tables many times to check on them. One piece of schnitzel and a small scoop of potato salad was over $20 it would have been better if service was ok
Sheldon
Over Priced, Cramped, and watered-down drinks. Went to this place with an open mind. The fish was tasteless, and not filleted - eyes, mouth, skin was all still there. Forget about comfort.. we were crammed into that place like sardines, and i could hear everyones conversations, and i'm sure they could hear mine.

We ordered shots of Ouzo, and got water/ouzo shots.. oh but they still charged us $6.50/shot
Gkwhmaz
Don't ever change. Fabulous. The only place in town for steak tartare. Wonderful professional service, consistent quality. You know exactly what to expect every time you go. (only 1 minor complaint - tables are uncomfortable for tall people and difficult to get your legs under)
Nicolausk
This is not a schnitzel. If you have any taste for German cuisine, I would recommend strongly against this restuarant. Probably one of the worst wiener schnitzels I've had. Deep fried and dry.

The sausage is definitely store bought.

Come on guys...

Had lunch with my Mom who was visiting & we both were very impressed. The food, service & quaint atmosphere made our outing very enjoyable! Thanks!

Fantastic Eastern European Cuisine. This place reminds me of my mom's cooking. Big portions (often half orders are more than enough to keep me full), quality ingredients, and favorite comfort foods out of my childhood such as dumplings. Yum. I'd highly recommend the goose & sauerkraut. I am so happy they re-opened. Prices are good. Helps to make reservations during popular times - I have had trouble getting tables.
Heather Anne Ritchie
Quaint little spot, certainly not what I would have expected from a bistro but surprisingly pleasant. Czech food, lots of pork on the menu but it's obvious that an eclectic mix of people enjoy it regularly. While a number of items looked interesting, I chose to play it safe with the smoked salmon on rye and a glass of the house Cabernet. Simply done but delicious. Nice presentation and delightful staff.
Essen
Claaaaassic. I like this place because it's not the usual foreign fair. It's different and they do a good job of it. The goulash is legit--it's like being back in Praha.
CyniC-
Wiener Schnitzel - yet again. What a strangely familiar taste... like Accent.

Except this place actually looks like a nice joint with good lighting and more restaurant-like instead of pub-like. And I do miss my steamed vegetables that I would get at Accent. Tough decision.

The veal cutlet is cut so thinly it must've been an art! it was nicely deep fried in half-re-used oil that makes it more down to earth and tasty. The pan fried tomatoes integrated with the veal cutlet effortlessly.

The half order portion here will get you to be 85% full, which is the healthy kind of full...

Most people there were well over 40... so if you feel left out because you are younger, well, don't, better to try this gem out now instead of waiting for a retirement hang-out place.

Love it. I love this restaurant.

Great schnitzel and warm atmosphere. Yummy potato salad!!!

Staff is wonderful
Chubby Chicken
Disappointing, Very Disappointing. I was disappointed as I know this restaurant has a good reputation. The new location is cramped, the service is inattentive and the food is only average to below average. I ordered the schnitzel, which is their signature dish, and it was perhaps the worst I have ever had. I think it must have gone downhill after it reopened.

Classic European Bistro. This is one of the better European style bistros in the city and it is evident from the moment you walk in and glance over the menu. A fairly good selection of beer, spirits, and wine, complements some classic staples on the menu. The five of us shared several appetizers, and also ordered entrees that came with starter salads. Everything was great, and we were completely stuffed by the time we were done. The portion sizes were huge and I would recommend ordering half sizes for the entrees. All in all a great place to eat although I think I could only handle it about once a month.

Fried Cheese and Potato Salad.... I went with a friend who recommended the fried cheese and potato salad. I don't have much experience in this type of food but I always approach food with an open mind. It was good but not what I imagined, it felt heavy and I was satisfied, but oddly not full. Being full isn't always the goal but hey, it's nice to go back to work on enough fuel to get you through to supper for the price. I would go back just to try other items and explore the cuisine.
The reviews seem to indicate that it's not living up to the reputation of the old location. I was at the old location once many years ago for supper and came away very impressed (and full!). Unfortunately, I don't feel the same way about my first visit to the new location.

Good food lost in fire?. Finally tried out their new location. While I was glad to have an Edmonton staple back I didn't enjoy my first meal. The roast goose was bone dry. And it didn't even come with a sauce. I ended up picking through half of it and taking the rest home where I tried to bring it back to life. Two others at my table ordered schnitzels which were not finished either. I won't give up on the Bistro Praha after one bad meal, but I hope they didn't leave the good food in the old location.

Old World Charm didn't work for me.. I spent hours of time trying to organize an event that generated substantial revenue for Bistro Praha. Weeks in advance. Restaurant behaved as though not interested in our business, difficult to reach persons in charge as staff were unable to comment on behalf of management. Apparently did not trust fax machines so had to do either phone for answers or deliver written needs/seating in person, snapped they were busy (I phoned three times in as many weeks) and didn't want to talk on phone; call later at night. Finally picked up a menu in person to have some idea about what they could provide. (No website. no fax, not phone-friendly) Not friendly in general. They wanted a guaranteed revenue amount to take our reservations and they select the date so not to lose revenue from walk-ins. They were late for our one scheduled meeting to review the menu as we were pre-ordering. I sat in their restaurant for almost half an hour ready to cry with frustration until someone showed up - but we had participants who regularly attended and this was their choice, so I perservered. Extremely frustrating. Food was mediocre; menu unexciting; service okay given the circumstances. On the night of, in addition to off the street guests, the restaurant booked another party of 18 persons. This was in addition to the 35 places/meals we had reserved. We were over-crowded. I feel sorry for those poor people who walked in off the street and were shoved in the back corner; their evening must have been very disappointing as well. We had pre-ordered so getting our meals was not an issue, the wait staff were very kind, but they were distinctly stressed. Any old world charm wasn't even discernible.

Went back a month later to try the lunch menu at the urging of one of the persons who had advocated for it for the main event. Fish portion looked huge, but fillet was so thin was mostly batter. Prices were appropriate for what was served, no problem there.

Would this group ever go back and spend another $1.5K? No. Would any of the people who attended ever return - probably only those who liked it in the first place.

Czech it OFF. What is with the attitude? The main man with all the personality of a twig keeps ushering me and me buds out because of some apocryphal reservations. "We need this table in a few minutes." Remember the old place....one could sit till the cows came home at sundown the next day.
And what is with the coffee? Left over chickory from one of those Great Wars???? Maybe give it another try in a year if it is still there.

Diassponted. Used to be a great place to dine. I was sad when they closed. The returning experiance was not good. Service was poor (they were busy, but not an excuse) Overcharged but chose not to argue. But will give them another go, hopefully will see some improvement.

I have been going to the Bistro Praha since the 80's! Thank goodness it's back! A bottle of wine and dinner for 2 comes in at around 60$! It's romantic and beautiful! I'm so ecstatic that Sharka and Milan have recreated their iconic little bistro!

Famous for ........ If a restaurant says that they are famous for a dish then when you order that dish is better be extra-ordinary. That is not the case here. One of a group of seven ordered the famous Snitzel which was way to thin therefore very dry and hard to cut. The server was very unattentive and we had to ask for anything that we needed. The room was small and very over crowded which made it hard to carry on any type of conservation.

Basically a very good cafeteria meal. Very outdated plain room with a limited wine list. Salad was very weak, my teenage son makes better salads. Main course chicken was very good but took a very long time (90 min) to get. Potatoes/mushrooms were very good as well. Good filling meal but not a great dining experience. I don't see myself returning.

Definitely a busy place, however my extremely weak stomach is upset (like because everything I ordered is pan fried). Because of that this restaurant is not for me. Everything tasted wonderful though!

My life is back to normal. The Bistro Praha has been my escape to genuine European civility and food since I can remember. Nothing has changed except the shape of the room and the address. Yes, there is a God and Bistro Praha is proof that he loves us.

Tastes Better Than I Remember. I'm so glad Bistro Praha reopened. Amazing schnitzel, crepes, atmosphere...everything! I'm just so happy to be back eating at one of my favorite places. For those who want to try some delicious European food, you must eat at the Bistro Praha!

Good to be back.. A cornerstone of Edmonton restaurant culture has finally re-opened. Great to see Sharka and Milan again. Still the best Steak Tartare for miles. Schnitzels rule and fabulous crépes for dessert.

Bistro Praha - they're back!. The new Bistro Praha is now open. It's fabulous. Same staff, same food (even the same menus from the other place were cleaned up and brought over). We had fried cheese, schnitzel, crepes, steak tartare - all the usuals. If you are a Bistro Praha fan, rejoice. They're back!
New location: 10117 101 St. (just north of Jasper, by the LRT entrance, old Zenari's on First.) Same phone number, 780-424-4218.

Fond Farewell. It is indeed sad to see this landmark go. I have enjoyed many an evening at the bistro. Crepes were great, the people even better. The Schnitzel was always fantastic.

Sadness. It's extremely sad to hear that this restaurant will not be opening again.

One block over, we headed to Bistro Praha for our next dish. This time a Hungarian sausage, seasoned with Hungarian paprika from Vancouver and a side of potato salad. The dish was well done although nothing fantastic. I was eye-ing the menu, however, and with a good selection of schnizel, I wouldn’t mind coming back to try! The drinks menu also featured Czech beer, something I had never seen anywhere else. Joe tried the Krusovice (light) and said it wasn’t bad. Most noticeable is the decor of the restaurant, bringing me back to the couple of days I was in Prague. Very cute place!

What better way to start a new blog about restaurants in Edmonton than by visiting an Edmonton staple? Bistro Praha first opened its doors in 1977, and, even enduring a terrible fire and relocation in 2010, remains a fixture today. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and I got the impression the restaurant has many regulars that the staff has come to know well. Prague Cabbage Soup (1/2 order) Bistro Praha has plenty of hearty options to offer, but I made the mistake of coming on a less-than-empty stomach. While I've heard rave reviews of the fried cheese, I had a feeling I would need to be peeled up off the floor by the end of the meal if I went there. The Prague cabbage soup I opted for was a marvelous blend creamy, sweet, and a touch of sour all at once in a mild tomato base. I really appreciated when our server offered half order -- an option available on most dishes -- since I knew I had to pace myself. Rye Bread Dinners are serve

I was recently in Edmonton to celebrate my birthday and we stumbled to Bistro Praha as it was walking distance from our hotel located in downtown Edmonton. I recognized “Praha” from my travels to Czech a few years ago, so I figured it was European food here – which I loved! We went inside and it was quite busy but they had a table for two, just for us! We wanted to start the dinner off with some appetizers and we picked some out on the menu – until I found in the soup section some Bistro Beef Goulash “Zhorelec” which was basically a beef stew with some Czech bread, which is known as dumplings. This dish offered tender and juicy pieces of beef flank and with their Czech bread to soak up the sauce, it was almost a meal on it’s own! For dinner, I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel which came with a salad. The salad was really large and I asked for their green garden salad which the dressing was an interesting vinaigrette! It was light and refreshing, and actually quite tasty! The Wiener Schnitz

...walking through a heavy fabric curtain, you step into a strangely bohemian world with the an odd assortment of chairs and mismatched tables

The summation of a meal at Bistro Praha is an old school, Old World feed of meat and starch. Don't expect anything fussy - thank goodness.

The roasted duck (or goose when available) is amazing as always, coming out picture perfect and served on a warmed plate. When you bring your utensils down on your meal the browned skin speckled with fennel seeds and spice breaks away revealing tender meat beneath that beads with its own juices in anticipation. There is no need to really “cut” into the meat as it can just as easily be pulled away in succulent threads. With a bit of the warm seasoned skin to go along with your first bite and enjoy. Now even though the roasted duck plays by itself nicely the two supporting sides makes this a complete dish. Sauerkraut with bits of smoked pork cooked together to create the perfect acidity to enhance the flavours of the meat. The bread dumplings, I believe are steamed, reminded me of Chinese “mantou” buns. Though softer and less sweet than their Chinese counterpart, are equally delicious as they are drizzled with jus from the roasted duck which absorb and retain the savouriness in its fluff
