Really good food, I have been going there for a really long time, excellent service and a large choice of dishes. I would recommend going there.
Too good food. the pepperoni poutine was very good. me and my friends were a few dollars off and the worker filled in the rest with his own money from his pocket. all my experiences were great. I highly recommend. it might be a bit pricey, but worth it.
Love their poutine - great flavour and great price. The Wild West sandwich and Queen smoked meat sandwich were delicious too! Nice place for eating in but also easy to call for take out.
I haven't been in a while, and I was a little nervous because some poor reviews seem to be cropping up. As an ex-pat Montrealer, I have enjoyed this place since it opened (late 80s?). They hand carve the smoked meat, which is juicy and flavourful - as authentic as I've ever had. The fries are appropriately double fried (very important), the pickle is salty, tart and garlicky and the coleslaw is very tasty. I loved the unexpected "gift" of an Original Jos Louis - brought back great memories of my childhood. The gentleman behind the counter couldn't have been kinder. He was working alone, but it was after the lunch rush and I didn't feel the wait was unreasonable. This is NOT a fast food joint - expectations need to be adjusted accordingly. The only thing I didn't love was the "light rye bread", which is really white bread with indistinct brown flecks. Traditional smoked meat is served on heavier rye bread, which is fairly dense, kind of a greyish colour and full of caraway seeds. I'm disappointed they've changed, but it's still a great sandwich and I'll be back.
Had the smoked meat and onion sub.....damn it was good. Will defo come back for another sub. The staff was friendly and hooked my buddy and I up with a free poutine.
Amazing subs and poutines!
Having missed this iconic place for so many years, I finally made it out a few days ago. It was early afternoon. It was empty as could be. The lunch rush was over, we were told. We saw that as a good thing, since we knew our order would be well taken care of. At least, we hoped so. We came for the poutine. Nothing else. At the order desk (they don't serve), we were greeted with a smile. Miss L ordered the smoked meat poutine, and I ordered the regular, since I intended to share some of her smoked meat pieces. In a reasonable time, our orders were ready. Fresh and good. The orders were *huge*, and a single fries and poutine is just too much for one normal person. Well, for most. But this was poutine heaven! Havening lived in Montreal for 7 years, I've tasted some excellent poutines. This was, IMO, the very best I've ever had in Calgary! The gravy was layered, not just on the top of the fries; and the cheese curds were awesome high quality; and there was plenty. I loved it. I tasted some of Miss L's smoked meat that came with her poutine, and it was exceptional! It was lean, but very tasty ... and not overly salty, as so many are. I loved it. So did she, and she's not a true lover of smoked meat. She said she would even have one of their smoked meat sandwiches next time we travel to the far reaches of Calgary close to the airport. They had everything you could imagine on their menu, which is usually not a good sign. Trying to be a restaurant that is everything to everyone is usually futile, and a sign of a struggle. Not the case here, as far as their poutine and smoked meat goes, and as far as their wonderful, smiling attitude. I highly recommend this place. Parking: 3/5. Service: 5/5 (smiles all around, but no table delivery.). Presentation: 3/5 (in a take-out box). Ambience: 4/5 (it's a fast-food place). Portion Size: 5/5 Flavors: 5/5. Value: 5/5.
Absolutely amazing experience. The food was incredible and authentic to Quebec, the service was wonderful even they were backed up with others they took the time to make sure we were happy and enjoying our experience. We will definitely be coming back!
Ate the poutine, was very pleased with the taste. Could have used some more salt and the pepperoni was very tasty. Could have had more pepperoni. Home made fries are awesome!
ok so i went in for lunch one day thought this place might be good and i was surprised as the 6 inch sub cost 10 dollars and took about 20 minutes to make so i had to eat on my way back as i started to run late although the food is good and maybe not what you pay for but its still really good i would reccomend this place to anyone but the ambience isnt the best and it seems like it needs some renovating Over all the topics i discussed it is a ok place to eat would come back
A little piece of home!. Love this place! Wish it was bigger and it really use some renovations to look cleaner but the food is awesome!!
Great smoked meat, great fries, great coleslaw. Highly recommended! However, on my first visit the staff decided to mop the floor using a highly smelly industrial cleaner. Was not conducive to enjoying a smoked meat platter. Please use a milder cleaning agent if you MUST mop the floor when customers are present.
Yankee loves Alberta King. Went to Alberta king of Subs Feb. 18, 2013 and had a Jester sub (steak, smoked meat, fried onions) and it was really good. In the States we would call smoked meat pastrami I think. Had onion rings which were the best I've had in ages, crispy, not an over abundance of batter. Staff was super friendly.
I've been going to king of subs for a few years now. Modestly placed in the side of a gas station strip mall, next to a 7-11 as well. This place has shined for me as a beacon of food lust despite the location since i first went there. The staff are wonderful and kind, also wonderfully unique as a goid few aren't scared to wesr their ink and style openly (in a sanitary and respectful manner of course). The dining area is lack luster, however the few pieces of montreal sheek covering the walls and big windows do well to create a simple and inviting, albeit basic environment.
Now, finally the food. If i was pressed to describe it in the fewest words possible i'd have to use "culinary orgasms riding against the insides of my mouth bordering so vicously on erotic it's grinding in delicous agony". I tradionally order the a regular (sized, also the largest, and about the size of two babies head) poutine with smoked meat put into it, and a sub, one which i fill with thin sliced steak and smoked meat, as well as a number of veg with oregano and italian sub sauce. This comes up to about 16-18$ for just me and i ussually finish it in a sitting.
Now, thats a big cheque for anyone looking for a quick bite. But if you really want to eat, the portions are massive (i reccomend eating in if you order a poutine, they fill it higher without a need for a lid on top.) and the food is always amazing. You simply can't go wrong.
Yum!. Just got back from this place and it really hit the spot. I have the Traditional Cut of Smoked Meat and a Regular Poutine. When I leave other places after having tried the Smoked Meat, I am always dissatisfied, but the smoked meat was quite good. I agree with other reviews on the lack of cheese, apparently they portion the cheese so you need to order extra cheese. As a Montrealer, I'd return to this place whenever I want some smoked meat! Only thing missing in the decor is a map of the metro!
We were trying to decided on a light meal for a good price and not been to this sub place as we are sick of subway we went to the king of subs for 3 people it came to 43 dollars one full sub , six inch a large chicken poutine, small poutine and 3 drinks ..the food was tasty ill give it that but wow way to much cash for sub sammys in my book probably wont go there again unless someone else is paying
Alberta King of Subs has never failed to satisfy my craving for authentic poutine! The fries are homemade and crispy, covered with cheese curds and covered with their delicious gravy made from their smoked meat drippings! It's to die for! Their smoked meat sandwiches are equally delish as well.
Always a treat for any French Canadians out there. Poutine is awesome and the Montreal smoked meat is to die for. Really affordable, and a perfect fix for the craving that is rarely filled!
Authentic Montreal smoked meat. A little pricey but I guess you get what you pay for.
A flavourful and bountiful meal fit for a king!. My boyfriend went to Alberta King of Subs to pick up the 12-inches Jester sub (with finely sliced pieces of steak, smoked meat, and fried onions at $12.95) and a regular smoked meat poutine ($9.75). The poutine is filled with thickly cut fries, loads of juicy and chunky pieces of smoked meat, mounds of rich and stringy cheese curds, and globs of malt-coloured gravy. As for the Jester sub, it was was superbly made. The softness and warmness of the buns offered a nice introduction to the sub. They invited me to immediately take notice of the crispiness and tanginess of meat and fried onions. Next, the fresh and crunchy nature of the lettuce and tomato gave a nice contrast to the meat. Finally, the special sauce the sub was drizzled with gave a nice denouement to this terrific piece of edible goodness. This is a meal worthy of the average king. Anyone who thinks highly of their palate, but is on a budget should give Alberta King of Subs a try.
A 'lil piece of home with great subs!. Dropped by on Saturday with my husband for some lunch at this humble little sub/smoked meat/poutine shop in a small gas station strip mall. I'd seen the picture menu and knew exactly the type of sub they were selling: my kind of sub :)
You can choose a cold sub, but their hot subs are as I remember them from such places as Paju Le Roi Du Sous-Marin (translated: Paju the King of Subs; located in Candiac, a suburb of Montréal). The meat, onions and whatever other veg you got are fried on a griddle-type surface and then heaped onto a sub bun and topped with shredded lettuce, tomato slices and then sprinkled with oregano and drizzled with some type of sub sauce (reminds me of a simple italian dressing). Superb. The bun held up just fine to the luscious juices without being an overly crusty bread.
I got the Jester (6") - steak, smoked meat, onions, etc (check the menu) and my husband got the Gate House (6"). I ended up preferring the Gate House 'cause it had some mushrooms and I think some green pepper in it, but both were delicious. We shared a small fry and I must say they were also very good. It's a matter of opinion, of course, but I like these ones 'cause they're bigger than shoestring, smaller than beefeater, a bit browned, and on the somewhat softer side of crispy. Sprinkle some vinegar and salt on those puppies and I'm in heaven. Of course I washed down my meal with a diet Pepsi (I know... diet... my husand shook his head). I could've ordered a Labatt 50 if I'd wanted to (not that I like it) - they had some!
The staff was friendly, food took the expected 10 or so mins to be ready (hey, they're makin' it for you, be patient), and the simple walls were interrupted here and there with road maps of Montréal, a Schwartz's menu, a couple pizza box lids (one from Mike's - a chain in Québec). I saw an old bottle of spruce beer (yuck... my mom likes that stuff) and their fridge listed prices for their home made beef jerky and Lafleur cretons (mmm... pork spread...). I can't beef jerky's a Québec thing (I've yet to try some), but whatever, they sell some.
I'll have to go back and try a smoked meat sandwich and poutine some time if their subs & regular fries were any indication of their skills at making good ole greasy Montréal food :)
Just Like What You Would Get In Montreal. I have not tried the subs, thus I cannot comment on them. However, the Montreal smoked meat is juicy, tender, and served at the right temperature. If you are craving traditional Montreal smoked meat, this is the place. My only wish, is that they would lower their prices a bit.
Yum. The smoked meat sandwiches are lovely, the fries are good and you always leave stuffed.
I prefer to get one of the toasted subs (The Big King, loaded... the sauce they put on the subs just works for me) and an order of the Smoked Meat Poutine to share with whomever I'm with. On Tuesdays they special on where you order two hot dogs for a great price. I recommend them loaded, mainly because they have cabbage (not sauerkraut) on them.
They also deliver, but due to they don't take debit/credit a the door, cash only (due to it be an out-sourced service).
Montreal Smoked Meat. Its about as close to Montreal smoked meat as you can get West of Hull. Always large portions and great home chipped fries but unfortunately no Black Cherry Soda. (Standard accompaniment in Montreal)
This poutine is filled with thickly cut fries, loads of juicy and chunky pieces of smoked meat, mounds of rich and stringy cheese curds, and globs of malt-coloured gravy. Don't underestimate the power of the Alberta King of Subs' smoked meat poutine. It is big enough to feed two hungry adults with some extra left for midnight snacking. The fries were cooked to a soft exterior with the rich potato flavour bursting out
