A Pleasant Surprise
came upon this restaurant by accident and glad we did. normally only come to this mall to shop at T&T and a Bubble Tea. this time, we happened to come at supper time and so originally thought to go to Pebble Street, but due to where we parked
This place is pretty great. The portions are decent, and the soup is delicious. Go in expecting Chinese restaurant service, and stop complaining about it. It's not a surprise. You gotta get BOLD in places like this. Hold up a hand to get their attention. Don't be white and polite. Just get it done.
My boyfriend and I went to The Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot Restaurant. It was us “N” times been to this restaurant, but it was the first time having food at the Calgary location. Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot is a Chinese Hot Pot restaurant. It has so many locations in all over the world. There are lots of locations in Canada. There is only one location in Calgary. The Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot Restaurant in Calgary is located at 999 36 St NE #100a Calgary.
Environment:
The restaurant was opened around 11 am. We arrived Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot Restaurant around 11:30 am. The restaurant was not busy. We could get a table very easy. Inside the restaurant, it was very nice and clean.
Service:
After we sat down, the server brought the menu to the table. There were two different kinds of menus. One is for all you can eat and another one is lunch menu. We had the Lunch Menu to order. We ordered two lunch combos and two lamb strews for lunch. The food came out the kitchen fast.
Food:
The meat was super fresh. The soup base was very tasty. There are lots of dipping sauces, which is great. Each combo includes noodles, vegetable, and meat. But, it was a super small portion. Also, the lamb strews were small and cold. I’m not very like it. But, my boyfriend loved them.
Price:
The prices of the lunch combos were around $15 include the tax. It was great. The lamb strews were over prices.
The service at the restaurant was excellent. We went during the time that it was not too busy. We went on a weekday, later in the afternoon. The waitress that served us was very friendly, informative and
knowledgeable. The waitress asked us if it was our first time at the restaurant and we replied with, "yes." The waitress then proceeded to explain how ordering went about and gave us free beverages because it was our first time there. We got the plum juice and the plum juice tasted like the dried and salted plums, but was delicious because it reminded me of that taste. The hot pot was delicious and the price was not that expensive. There are different broths for the hot pot that you can choose from. The restaurant looks very nice inside and is very large. The tables have hot plates to heat up the hot pots. The washrooms are clean and well kept. The atmosphere of the restaurant is friendly and lively. I would go to this restuarant again.
First time eating here. Been to 1 pot. This place is far better. Was very clean and great service. Severs explained how everything works for the all you can eat. Large amounts of food for each order. Definitely didn't go hungry. Wasn't rushed to eat. Will be going back!
I've been here twice now, both times with groupons. Each time we opted for the half and half, and really enjoyed both broths. The spicy was especially good for cooking in, though it was a bit hard to eat around all the chile's which were really bitter when I accidentally ate one.
I haven't had hot pot before, so don't have anything to compare it too, but the selection seemed good, the fatty steak, kimchi, and dumplings in particular were tasty. But the lamb was really strong though, and the shrimp weren't de-veined, and after you pull a hot shrimp from broth it's kinda hard to take the shell off and clean it... we didn't eat them. All the seafood was actually pretty bad. Chewy and frozen.
I'd have given them a higher rating except both times I've been here they didn't bring us some of the things we ordered, and brought us things that we didn't.
Over all I quite enjoyed the experience of hot pot, but it's likely I'll go elsewhere next time.
We tried Little Sheep twice using a Groupon. We never had Asian hotspot so it was a new experience for us. The first time, we got half of each broth type. We liked the spicy, but found it made more sense to go with the regular the second time and spice things up from the dip buffet. I found that for the vegetables, it was not clear how much you were ordering. Unlike the meats, there was nothing on the menu that indicated how much was one portion. The garlic beef is yummy and we also love the wontons. I wish that the dip counter had more options. Both times we went they also had no green onions
Even though there was a place for it. It was good on a cold Winter night.
This is likely the best hot pot I have been to in Calgary. They have an all you can eat option where you can order all the meat,
Vegetables, tofu, Noodles and dumplings you want ! The original broth is delicious with tons of flavor once some meat has cooked in it. They have a "dip" bar where you can create your own dips with: garlic, coriander, Chili oil, sate, peanut sauce etc etc. Very delicious !! The dumplings were probably my favorite - they were fresh made and turned out delicious in the broth. I also really enjoyed the slices of beef, white turnip, mushrooms, Napa cabbage, and glass noodles. I am already planning my next trip back ! The staff are very friendly and helpful.
Definitely one of the better places in Calgary for Hot Pot. There prices are average even when you factor in the fact that broth is an additional charge. Free refills on pop and plum juice. Meats are seafood seems very fresh. The quality is also better than most. Menu is slightly limited though. I wouldn't say REALLY limited. but it's about 80% of what you would get at most places. Service is okay, but you can't expect too much when you're going to a Chinese place.
Tried out this place today and I was actually quite pleased! The beef and seafood for the all you can eat hotpot was nice and fresh, and I really enjoyed making my own dipping sauce. Price was also very reasonable - restaurant looks newly renovated and place was very clean. Will definitely be coming back!
I've been to this place a few times and I have to agree with some of the complaints. Service is spotty. The AYcE is expensive, especially if you have to pay for broth. Selection is limited and some of the choices are lousy -- I've never been to a Chinese restaurant that served fake crab, most would be embarrassed.
That said, if you order ala carte you do much better with fewer items -- the neck bones are amazing and maybe some spinach. If you go mid week the broth is free and they top it up regularly. Some of the non soup items like the squid skewers are awesome and cheap. My kid loves the sauce bar. If you have one of those $5 vouchers you can walk out of there for $10 at lunch and $15 at dinner and still have more than enough to eat for me and an 8 year old. The place is clean and the atmosphere is bright. We've become regulars, we're in there every other week. Overall it's decent but I agree the AYCE is a ripoff.
So fun...SO FULL. This was a great first time experience for our whole group of friends, and we definitely want to go back. We are hot pot noobs so we had to do some research ahead of time on etiquette and recommendations, and learned a lot about how we'd do it differently next time. It was a little tough to figure some things out as the staff didn't speak great English, but they were friendly and helpful anyways.
We want to take our big families here for a party!
First time came here after hockey with 2 buddies, food was great for the price we paid. Service was on point, kept refilling our drinks, clean facilities. Went back to celebrate Chinese New Years, literally could not finish what was given to us. Service was standard considering how busy it was, will definitely go back.
Little Sheep is solid. The food quality is decent, service is good, the facility is clean, the lunch special is a reasonably good deal, everyone gets their own hot pot, and the broths have really nice flavor.
Besides the relatively limited selection of food, it's one of the better hot pot places I've been to in Calgary.
This restaurant is really nicely decorated and located right next to Forbidden City in the NE. The servers are really attentive and it does not take much to get their attention and things you're requesting for (extra napkins, refills, etc) unlike some other AYCE hot pot. We got the half and half broth which came with the original hot pot and spicy pot broth. You do have to pay a surplus for the broth, however it is split between the people at the table. I didn't like the spicy hot pot as I found it had a lot of peppercorns which you'd get bites of if not careful, however the selection of meats and vegetables is great and everything appears vey fresh. We would return again.
This is a belated review from a visit in the summer. At the time, I think it was about $25/person plus $13 for the broth. Quite a few items like the oysters, fish, are extra. It is a little bit more expensive than other fondu establishment. I think it's worth the extra and my experience was positive.
FIrst, the service was professional and attentive. The servers always checked on us. We ordered 2 kinds of broth: original and szechuan. Both were delicious. Though the selection wasn't as huge as other restaurants, it was sufficient. I will always pick quality than quantity. I will certainly be back!
Compared to the "Little Sheep" in Toronto, this doesn't compare. Toronto had individual pots, more variety of food, and no limits on how much to order. Compared to other Calgary hot point joints, I'd still say it ranks pretty high.
Soup is delish! Don't make the mistake of opting for those special broths for $10.99 when the normal broth comes free. You can always make your own dipping sauces if the soup flavor isn't to your liking.
As for food, the sucky part is that you can only order two rounds. There's also a limit to how much you can get of each meat. Doesn't live up to the "AYCE" title..
Service and atmosphere was nicer than I was expecting. Waiters were actually very friendly and made an effort to help with our orders. It's also much cleaner than most asian restaurants you'll come across.
Overall, it's nothing TOO special, but compared to what we have in Calgary, I'd recommend it. Just plan out what you want to order well!
I went here with my brother yesterday, their lunch special hot pots are pretty good size and at a fair price. I had their beef skewers and their Mongolian meat pie (tastes like a salty flattened pork dumping), don't bother getting those they're a waste of money and wasn't all that tasty. Their warm soy milk is not bad at all.
I wasn't really interested in trying this restaurant at first because the price is a little high, $23.99 for an adult and you have to pay $10.99 for the soup base. Additionally, it's not technically all you can eat because you can only order 2 rounds of food. That being said my foodie friend recommended this place to me so I had to try it.
They don't offer as much variety as 1 pot and all the ready to eat food is an additional cost. Even though there wasn't as much variety the quality of the food was really good. The fish balls and meat balls etc are all freshly made in house. I like the Szechuan style kimchi it's quite tasty and refreshing. The soup bases were good and it was similar to some of the soup bases I've had in Taiwan but the spicy soup base wasn't spicy.
The kitchen staff didn't seem to care about portion sizes. Many items on the menu specify how many pieces are included per order but when our food arrived the portions were all random. That being said I did enjoy the food and i'm already craving it.
This place is huge!!!! I'll be honest I'm not a fan of hotpot or all you can eat. But my friend convinced me and she lives for hotpot.
Got there at 8ish on a Friday night it wasn't very busy, and there's lots of parking. Their last call is around 930.
They don't have a huge selection of condiments to make your own dipping sauce, but I'm a huge fan of their satay mixed with a little peanut butter and onions and cilantro. Menu is lacking desserts too 😔
Garlic beef is a favourite and can't forget to mention that their meat/fish balls are all hand made and NOT frozen! The food was all really fresh. And they refill broth at no cost!
Will return, but I have to remind myself not to over eat, or else I regret AYCE every time.
It was my first visit at this restaurant and I was surprised at how spacious, clean and open this place was - not the usual layout for a typical Chinese restaurant.
Despite the lack of variety, the quality of the food was very good. Unlike 1pot, they have enoki mushrooms. The seating was very comfortable as well. AC was blasting to let customers enjoy the heat from the hot pot.
I knew going in that it would be more pricey than other AYCE hot pot. It was $23.99 for adults ayce, $10.99 for the broth (which was very yummy) and additional charges for beverages outside of tea or water. Luckily, I had bought a groupon earlier this summer (Pay $11 for $20 worth of hot pot for 2 people), and when we sat down, one of the workers told us that since we are a party of 2, we can opt for the mini pot priced for $5 instead of $10.99. We went with that option since a small pot would be sufficient for the two of us. We had iced water and tea for our choice of drinks. I ordered an egg to add to my sauce bowl and it was an additional $1 charge. Overall, it came out to $38 for two people (before tips). We were also given a $5 voucher to use for next visit. It was a very good price for what we had. I would return again for sure, but I'm a little unsure if I would return as frequent due to the full price that I would have to pay outside of groupon and mini pot charges. Definitely worth it with a coupon and mini pot - which is recommended for a party of 2.
I like the soup base at this place in a communal hot pot style restaurant because it has good flavour. The food portions are generous for an on average $30/person after factoring the hidden costs of the soup base and unlimited pop, prune juice, or iced tea. Service is inconsistent and you need to follow up with the orders and make sure they do not bring the wrong items. Would go back again, but it would be a tough call between 1Pot.
Five out of Five for Authentic Chinese Hot Pot.
By now this restaurant is ranked as my second favorite place for Chinese hot pot in North America, only falls behind one in New York.
My wife and I went there at 5pm, so the service was nothing but fantastic. The AYCE dinner came with tasty soup base and plenty of choices of food. We were seriously regretting for having too much for lunch.
I personally cannot believe the score for this place is so low here.
We made reservations only to arrive and found that someone else gave our name. The staff was able to seat us quickly and apologized for the mix up. We ordered and sat and sat and waited and waited. I think they are understaffed. The first dish arrived after 20 minutes but no hot pot to cook it in. More dishes but still no hot pot. Thankfully there were a couple of pickled veggie dishes that we could have. The hostess came by and realized we had no pot and called the kitchen. More dishes, still no pot. And no paper listing the dishes we ordered. Another 13 minutes before the pot arrived. The food was great! And the dishes plentiful. Overall quality is very good. Hopefully it doesn't take as long to eat next time.
Very Asian Experience. Busy place, great aroma of spices when we walked in. Ambience was good with seating for almost 350+ people with VIP rooms.
Choice to go all you can eat for about $30/person or a la carte. Good variety, fresh food and servers were helpful. Recommended stay of 90 min with about 6-8 TV screens showing sports coverage.
Would recommend for the experience and I would go back again with friends and family.
Finally a decent hot pot place in Calgary that is setting the standard of what it should be!
A large setting area with an open high ceiling. The meat, seafood and vegetables were all very fresh. They even had fresh Tung Ho which is hard to come by in Calgary and is expensive when they are available. All the meat was all nicely cut into thin slices and the meat balls were not the frozen ones that you can buy from the supermarket! Great part was that they actually had the meat shaped in balls so it didn't taste like they just brought it out of the freezer. Can't wait to go back!
