Wasabi Restaurant Calgary
"I Brake For Sushi"
I love sushi and for decades searched every corner of the globe to satisfy my cravings for the appetite-quenching healing high amino flavours only the best knives prepare. Spending half my time in Asia, I fell in love with what at the time a relative hole-in-the-wall .... Couldn't stay away.
On my third visit that first week (the prices are very very low for the quality) I even brought my wife who doesn't eat sushi (yah, surprise) knowing anyone who can do it this good can do anything with fish; and I brought the young owner Eddie Sung a doppler magnum of champagne to impress upon him my gratitude having him move to my home city and my hope that he would stay.
Actions are almost always, better than words. So is his sushi.
I have been going to Wasabi for years and have not found a better sushi restaurant in Calgary. The fish is always fresh and melt-in-your-mouth, something you rarely find anywhere. As another reviewer noted, their crispy salmon skin is amazing. I have never seen that served at another Japanese restaurant.
The staff, especially the owner, is always friendly and they go out of their way to accommodate any requests. The restaurant is very clean, comfortable and quiet.
There have been so many new sushi restaurants opened in Calgary since Wasabi first opened their doors. Some offer quantity over quality, like the all-you-can-eat places, and some focus on creating new options. There's a place for everyone's preferences. But if you just want basic, fresh, and tasty sushi, this is the place to go.
Came here tonight for the first time and had a quick dinner. The place is very quaint and the service was pleasant. My boyfriend and I shared an assortment of nigiri and two rolls. The fish was decently fresh and the rolls held together well. I really enjoyed the $1.00 nigiri. It's always nice when you can get a good feed of sushi for an affordable price. I'll go back for sure
I have been going to this restaurant for years, 15 to be more precise, about once a month in the average. I mostly order one of the lunch menu items (combos) or salmon or tuna don if I go for dinner. I don't recall the food not to be fresh or tasty ever. Prices are very convenient, service is fast, and the place is a bit humble but pleasant.
The server is so nice and check everything is good fluently. The food is very fresh and sometimes it's food is so late but we can understand it's busy night. We are all human beings. The owner is a very nice person which is the chef there call eddy the server told me he is best owner in the town.
I will come back!
The sushi was good, the service was fast, and there was steady walk in traffic here. I also enjoyed the fact I didn't have to break the bank to fill myself up.
Delightful staff & scrumptious dishes. We had a large dinner party, but our server remained cheerful, considerate, and professional throughout the evening. She did not appear at all impatient, and she would attend to our glasses at appropriate times. The dishes were brought out promptly. The sushi and sashimi dishes had that fresh and buttery texture. My favourite that evening would have to be the red snapper. For cooked dishes, I would certainly recommend the tempura yam fries and the grilled squid.
Not bad. Good prices... stick with the sushi. I don't come here for cooked food or noodles. :)
Best bang for your buck. Been going here for YEARS, its always good and well priced!
Forbidden Rice / Black Rice Maki & Sushi. Healthy and delicious choice of Japaneses black rice maki and sushi finally here in Calgary! definitely will visit again for more!
Excellent lunch specials. Delicious bento boxes. Really enjoyed it. Bang for your buck ! Tempura was fabulous !
Nope. Eddy is still the owner :-)
I've driven by this place a million times and thought it looked a little sketchy. But it is really good. Prices are great and the sushi is made by hand rather than being mass produced out of a rice pressing machine. Nice size portions and very fresh. Will definitely return!
I was there today for lunch. It was quiet and service was great. Ordered the yam tempura and dynamite rolls. Both were fantastic!! Will definately be back again!!
A word of warning first- Wasabi is very different from Kinjo, Sakana, etc.
They focus on traditional Japanese cuisine, so you will not find creative rolls here.
With that said, best place for sashimi in Calgary! Always fresh, beautifully cut, and delicious! They also serve certain kinds of fish according to the season that are not available at other Japanese restaurants, such as aji.
However their cooked foods is a hit or miss, but their chicken yakiudon is worth a try.
The atmosphere is nice and quiet, and the servers are sweet.
Wasabi has become a weekly ritual for me :)
Oh and no matter how full you are, you gotta try the green tea ice cream!!! Creamy and smooth, unlike some others that are gritty, hard and leave a fishy aftertaste. You won't be disappointed!
Amazing price and quality! .... Amazing price and quality!
Went for lunch and was completely blown away by how cheap and fresh the sushi is!
My new fav sushi place :D
LOVE THIS PLACE.. I really really love wasabi! The staff is super kind and friendly, the sushi is very cheap and very delicious. I really only come here with my parents because it's pretty far from my house, but it's well worth it. The place is never too crowded or loud, the service is amazing and food comes out pretty quickly. HIGHLY recommended to anyone in calgary looking for a sushi restaurant.
Good food, reasonably priced. I found this to be a place for Inexpensive good dinners. I like the daily dinner specials that include tempura and miso soup, salmon is my favorite. Absolute must is the appetizer tempura yams.
We had sashimi. Some of it was incredible; sweet amaebei (prawn) & scallop. Some pieces almost could have melted in your mouth, but not quite. Decent for delivery.
They got the order wrong, as we'd asked for sashimi and no rice. Due to a language barrier we received rice. They apologized but didn't seem to acknowledge compensation because it was written as sushi instead of sashimi.
Friendly Service
Still searching
My favourite favourite place EVER. You just can't beat the hospitality and the quality... and of course the price. this little gem dishes up great gyoza and unique dishes that have an authentic japanese flair. they don't have a huge selection of original rolls but you come here for the sashimi... or i do anyways!
Decent food at affordable prices. I haven't had Sushi for a while since it's so overpriced in Calgary. Then today I decided to try Wasabi. $40 for the luxurious boat for two with the amazing yam fries (44 pieces) soup and salad is almost unheard of in Calgary. The tuna, scallops, salmon, salmon roe are all fresh.
Good service all around and most importantly good food at very reasonable price. Definitely could be my new favorite spot for Sushi.
One of my favorite sushi places. Yum Yum, I always go there, the sushi is great and the prices are really good. The atmosphere is very relaxing and the service is really good.
If you like rolls though then this is not the place for you because they don't have a good selection.
I love this place, unassuming exterior tucked in the corner of a small strip mall, but consistently above the norm for sushi in Calgary. If you dare, try the tempura yam, but be warned that this is all you'll be craving until your next Wasabi fix Delicious will not even do justice in describing these little beauties. All tempura dishes are outstanding, though, it's very hard to pick favorites. This is my favorite sushi place, and trust me, I love to eat!!
Went during a weekday for lunch. Had a lunch combo. Portions were just right. Teriyaki sauce was flavorful. Service was friendly and attentive.
Excellent food and service. My husband and I are new to the Calgary area. We both love Sushi and decided to go to the Wasabi Japanese Restaraunt last Sat March 19th.for the first time. The food was absolutely wonderful and the server was very friendly and her sevice was GREAT. We loved that it was a small ...quaint restaraunt. The presentation was wonderful and tastey. We both highly recommend this restaraunt and we look forward to going back. Oh yeah......the prices are very resonable. Thank you for such good service :-)
Try catering service at your home with 7-10 friends. All you can eat type of food choice is much better than any restaurants. It is real good value with the price! ($30 each include tip)
Love it and the prices. I love this place it's authentic and the prices are great. seriously if there's better prices out there for great food let me know. the spicy tuna sashimi is to die for. so friendly and totally a family owned and operated restaurant.
Not bad, but pricey. I've been here a couple of times and have found that things can go either way as far as the food. On some visits I've found the fish to be fresh and the preparation to be good while other times the opposite was true.
I do think the prices are a bit high for what they offer and if the quality was consistent I'd say go here.
... great little location! The fish is fresh and good, and the prices aren't bad either! We came for dinner, and the service was quick too!!
