I would have rated 4.5 if I could based on the shrimp Okonomiyaki I ordered, a kind of Japanese pizza. It was enough for me as I am not a big eater. It was recommended in other people’s comments :) and it was nicely done and very tasty! I was also happy to get to know a new Japanese dish. Sea food udon soup has many different sea foods inside and vegetables, for people who like noodle soup, it is a good choice, too. The owners are a senior Japanese couple, who also cook and serve the food. I assume you can have authentic home made food here :)
This is a really charming mom and pop place that I regularly come to because I love the atmosphere. The restaurant is owned by an elderly Japanese couple and you get the feeling that you are eating a home cooked meal in their kitchen when you come here. The sushi and sashimi are just average but I would really reccomend their hot dishes. I always get their shrimp okonomiyaki which is excellent. The katsu curry dishes and nabeyaki udon are also really great.
I only just recently noticed this place. Walking in, it felt like a fairly typical mom and pop shop. Nothing fancy, pretty basic. The folks whom I presume to be the proprietors were very nice. It was cold out so I opted for udon. I picked the nabeyaki udon mostly cos I was wanting some vegetable content. I also ordered a negi toro roll. The udon was ginormous. It came out in a clay pit and as I dug into it I discovered all sorts of treasures beneath the surface. Clams, mussels, squid, octopus, shiitake mushrooms, kombu, egg, enoki mushrooms, shrimp, spinach, it was chock full of good stuff. Well worth the price tag. The food reminded me a lot of home cooking. Comfort food if you will. I definitely enjoyed my visit and would happily go back.
Super cute family business! The food was delicious, and it came within a reasonable time. The service was great; the chef came out to ask us what we thought of the food. Will definitely come back!
What an awesome little mom and pop shop. It's so nice to support local business. Their menu was extensive and the prices were reasonable. The lady who took our order was super friendly I think she was the owner since it looked like it was a family restaurant where the wife manages the front and the husband is the cook. Food came out fast and we enjoyed everything. We got an order of beef taki udon and it came out on a sizzling plate. It was delicious and flavorful. The BC roll was super crunchy with salmon skin and unagi sauce. When we went up to pay we looked into the kitchen and was surprised to see a regular stove that you see at home. I was really impressed with this place and think this will become our regular spot from now on.
Japanese Noodle House is probably the most generic name you can think of but don’t let that fool you. It’s a mom and pop shop run by a humble, kind family. The inside is cute and quaint. It can probably fit about 25 people or so inside. Their specials for the day. That cold ramen was tempting. We also didn’t realize that the “R” stood for rolls. Oops.
EXCELLENT VALUE! Their beef tataki is BY FAR the best in Calagary. They do a pretty good marinade of sour, spicy and zing. The spinach is a nice twist and only $9.99! Other food is average but their prices are really LOW!
One of my favourite places to go in Calgary. The chirashidon, chicken udon, Zaria soba, and beef tataki is imo the best in Calgary. I know the other ratings are lower for this place but try these items and you will not be disappointed.
This little mom and pop restaurant is truly a hidden gem. The ambiance is like your childhood Asian friend's kitchen in 1985. But the food makes up for it. The staff is smiley and friendly and the food very prompt.
We ordered the spicy ramen, one with soy broth and the other with miso broth. They were both delightful, which one you choose will really depend on your mom and hankering for umami. The bowl was the perfect size and abundant in noodles (my favourite part). The broth was just the perfect amount of spicy, the kind that tingles but doesn't make you cough or sweat and subsides soon after you eat and doesn't burn when you drink hot tea. The level of spice was fully approved by Gour.mand.
We will go back and try the sushi next time!
One of my favorite mom and pop shops in Calgary. I have been going here for years and I have nothing bad to say. The sushi is always fresh and the soups are very delish. Chicken Katsu is super yummy.
I feel the chirashi Don here is probably one of the best in town. I give 5 for foods I feel is the best in the city. I'm not comparing to Japan if I did it would be 2.5 at most.
This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the city! Their beef tataki is absolutely superior and their sushi is always very fresh and delicious. This is a 'hole in the wall' type of place but is family owned and is very friendly. It's like dining with family actually. The owner and wife actually cook off of a kitchen stove! The best casual Japanese place in town.
The okonomiyaki at this small little hole-in-the-wall kitchen is the best I've had in the city. It's the most authentic, home-made okonomiyaki I've had outside of Japan. Thick batter, a crispy bottom sticking to the cast iron skillet and liberal uses of strong flavoured sweet okonomiyaki sauce and Japanese mayo. This dish alone compels me to return for another meal.
The noodle dishes are pretty traditional and basic for a noodle house. The soba had a good broth and nice chunks of tempura flakes for texture. The noodles were average, but did the trick of making a solid bowl of soba. The Spicy Ramen Pork had a very kimchi-like spice. If you don't like spicy this one is a bit more than mild (you can ask for it to be stronger or milder), however, the broth is really nice with strong sesame and nut flavours. The chunks of pork in the bowl were large and pretty well-done.
It's a small, unassuming place that I've passed hundreds of times, but never tried to visit. Walking in, it's like walking into an old Japanese couple's home. The back looks like a kitchen in your friend's home and the couple are always smiling and asking how you like their food. Plenty of pride in their dishes and as a Japanese shop it's a decent sized menu full of basic noodle and rice bowls and sushi dishes. Very enjoyable for a really casual experience.
I parked at WestPark across the street and paid, but realized that there was free on street parking after 6pm right outside after walking into the restaurant. The middle-aged waitress/owner tsked at me for my stupidity, which as an Asian, felt like I was being told by a mom but found it somewhat endearing. Anyways, don't be stupid like me. The decor is tacky, but in a way that feels like someone would call this place home if they lived in the middle of the Japanese countryside. The walls are cherry blossom pink with a bright green accent line as traditional Japan/nature images hang from them. Flower vinyl picnic covers top the tables and off to the side is a purple wall divider that just was never meant to be. The menus were in plastic report covers and Staples branded page protectors.
The Beef Tataki came with tons of beef, and while it was a bit chewy, we thought that it kind of added to the experience. The beef was lined with onion and then spinach, and it all went well together. This was slightly spicy, which was not expected.
The Crispy Spicy Tuna wasn't the prettiest we've seen, but it was good nonetheless. The crispiness came in the form of random bits of.. tempura(?) scattered on the surface of the roll, but was not a coating in any manner.
The Salmon Sashimi was cut somewhat roughly, but it was acceptable.
The Chicken Udon had only chicken, udon, and green onions. The chicken wasn't dry nor rough, but it felt unseasoned nor prepared in any manner; it was just plain chicken. The noodles itself were a good consistency, and the soup was quite tasty. Simplicity well done?
The Spicy Pork Ramen was a soy base, and this was an instance where the dish tastes better when you have a bit of everything together on one bite. It was good and had a nutty undertone, but lacked the depth of flavours like Chaya in Banff. As a 'noodle house', Japanese Noodle House did not really have a big selection when it came to their noodles.
The food took a little while to come out, but everything was decent.

This place was fantastic and totally authentic! The staff is amazing and it is overall just a fantastic little place! I can't wait to go back again and again! They also offer a large variety of foods so I have a lot to look forward to! The Mom and Pop feel really adds to the experience in my opinion; I just loved that. Highly recommended!!!
We heard great things about this place and we finally got to try it out for J week! It is very homely and the owners are very hospitable. We tried to order a little bit of everything since there were just so many delicious things to try.
*6.5/10* Decent place to grab a bowl a ramen, soy based recommended over miso based, sashimi was average at best same with rolls, if you're in the area grab a bowl, if not no loss
Amazing Japanese Food!. I love coming to this quaint Japanese restaurant! The owners are so friendly and welcoming and really take pride in their food and customers. Today I tried some different menu items- I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry and Assorted Tempura and my partner had Sashimi and Miso soup. The chef is very precise in his cooking and presentation- the food is very delicious! I highly recommend coming to this hidden 'food' gem!
The Taste of Japanese Home. If you ever wondered what Japanese people eat at home, please, stop by the Japanese Noodle House. When it first opened in 2004, we lived in the area and dropped in quite often. We gradually worked through the menu and realized, that.in addition to his wonderful sushi chef knife skills, Mr. Kishida maintains the tastes of his dishes as he remembers them when he grew up in Japan. We got to know the owners better each time we ate there and Mr. Kishida took the time explaining the ingredients and seasonings and how the dishes come together. In culinary science there is an expression "tongue memory", this is precisely why the dishes at this cosy restaurant feel like they are made by your Japanese relative (if you had one) who cares about you.
The service is impeccable - the owners will go out of their way to make you comfortable and serve you promptly and skilfully. Try Mrs. Kishida's chicken soup and realize that it is the taste of home!
Lunch combo was good and cheap. Miso was nice. Rice a tad dry though. Fish is fresh and good size pieces. I would come back for their noodles.
First time trying this lovely mom and pop restaurant. It's a cozy environment and service was extremely friendly. I ordered the beef Tataki to start and it was very tasty. It was spiced and seared just right! The homemade sauce is spicy and sour. Their spicy ramen is delicious and filling. I can honestly say that I'd recommend this place even after only eating two of their dishes; I assume everything else on their menu would be just as yummy! The prices are average, not expensive. I can't wait to go back ;)
Great sushi. Really cute little restaurant. The kitchen is just like a regular home kitchen, so it gives a really cool feel to the whole place, like you're eating at someones house! Very friendly staff, and great quality sushi. Edamame tasted so-so...not salted as much as I would have liked it. That's about it. Worth checking out for sure.
Awesome little place. Been coming here for years. The atmosphere might not be at most desired, but the quality vs price is more than satisfactory.
Sashimi was very fresh and very generous portions. Very tiny place which was good because there was only
One other table that was taken at 4pm
On a Monday. Soup was standard miso soup but I did not prefer the salad only because of the dressing. Overall very good bang for your buck. Will be back soon :)
Great. Food is really amazing. Price is even more amazing for what you get, great value. Fantastic and very friendly service. A must to go try and will be going back for sure.
Great ramen noodles! Affordable price!
Authentic Taste. Great lunch specials and a very authentic taste. I brought some Japanese Business Men to Calgary and managed to disappoint them with various sushi restaurants. When we came into the meager setting of Japanese Noodle House I was going out on a limb in an attempt to please mu guests. They were quite pleased with the food and made many positive comments about its authenticity. Personally, I always found the food excellent and of good value. They also serve and sell green tea with brown rice, check it out for this reason alone; sweet and delicious.
Great Mom & Pop Shop. This is our favourite little mom & pop sushi place. There oysters are amazing! We order them everytime we go. Big pieces of sashmi and excellent udon soups!
Great little restaurant opened by two older couples. You can always expect to see tv japan on but it adds to the feel of the restaurant. You feel like you are eating in someone's house and you are their guests. We love coming here with friends and for a inexpensive place to grab a quick sushi meal. Make sure you try the love boat. 2 ppl won't be able to finish the entire thing. Also highly recommend the tuna tataki.
Quick and friendly service, really cheap rolls ($3 salmon, $4 spicy tuna, $4 Cali ), delicious overall. Get the yam rolls, they are quite substantial!!
