Visited this place on the weekend. You can tell by the people who go here that it is an authentic Korean place. Had the split dish with black bean noodles and the spicy seafood soup. Also had the red pepper and garlic chicken. Really enjoyed the chicken it had good flavour, some of the pieces were a bit fatty but overall good. The black bean noodles were also tasty. The spicy soup however I could not eat, it was SO spicy. I cannot handle a lot of heat but of the 2 spoonfuls I did have it was good. Be aware tho, that this is not a Korean BBQ place. I was craving bulgogi and they do not sell it. Most of their dishes are noodles, soups, rice dishes and some fried chicken/pork dishes. No grilled meat dishes.
This was a nice little restaurant in our neighborhood. Service was friendly and recommend the seafood pancake and black bean noodles. Will definitely be back to try other dishes
Hidden gem!! Was so happy my gf and I stumbled upon this place. On a Thursday evening at 8:30pm this med sized restaurant was near full house.
Between the 2 of us we had the set dinner for 2-3 which included sweet and sour pork - we ordered the sauce on the side. Portions are huge, battered perfectly and the sauce was more sour than sweet but def different from the typical Chinese style. The veggies with pork and steamed buns were my fave! Sauce was so addicting and they had some bamboo shoots which gave the dish good texture. Buns were soft and couldn't resist soaking up the sauce. Then the ultimate spicy seafood noodle soup - AMAZING! The noodles are endless which is very rare. And the soup was perfect, right level of kick and can taste the seafood.
The service was mediocre but given how busy it was it's acceptable. The chefs are awesome too, we packed our noodles to go and asked if we could get more soup, they made us some to take home. My gf and I can't wait to come back here!
Amazing Chinese/ Korean dishes. Always fresh and flavourful. The majority of customers are Korean so that is a good sign for me that it is authentic.
We always order the black bean noodles and sweet & sour pork and in addition add a new dish each time to try. Last time we tried the spicy beef noodle soup and that was incredible! We are making our way through the menu.
Service has always been friendly and efficient.
We have frequented this mall many times as our puppy used to attend Dogma but we never really noticed this restaurant. Recently, while watching youtube, I discovered black bean noodles and they seemed quite intriguing. I looked up the closest Korean restaurant and stumbled upon this gem. We went at a slow time (5pm) and got a lovely seat right away. As soon as you open the door to this place you get a waft of amazing food smell. The ambiance is nothing special but the delicious smells make up for it.
Service was quick and friendly. We ordered the half-half (spicy seafood noodle and black bean noodle -jajangmyeon) and the starchy noodle soup. The starchy soup was good but was not what the hubby was expecting, it was just too filling, but still good. My half-half on the other hand, was great. The spicy seafood noodle soup was good. I particularly enjoyed the amount of seafood it contained. Totally worth the reasonable price. The black bean sauce is very tasty and not as sweet as I imagined, which made it unique and delicious. The noodles were perfectly chewy and enjoyable. I would probably just order the black bean noodle next time (it was that good), along with their garlic fried pork (I've heard good things).
We are definitely going back there as they have created a black bean noodle-lover!
This is one of my favorite places for a hearty home cooked meal when you need to carb up or just need some comfort food. I always get the half and half dish. Half spicy soup, half sweet noodles. The tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and sweet pork is also great.
I can't recall anywhere that has better Jambon than this place. My girlfriend visits from Toronto all the time and agrees, this is our favourite Korean noodle spot. Period. For example, she was super mad at me one day, and I was like "lets go get noodles". We came to this place and she was super happy after. Thanks San Dong Banjeom!
Consistently delicious every time I go. The half-half is the way to go if it's your first time. I get the spicy seafood noodles now. The red pepper and garlic deep fried pork is crazy good, kind of reminiscent of ginger beef but 2000x better.
I would recommend making a reservation on weekdays just in case they get busy, and to go earlier on weekends as they don't take reservations on weekends and it fills up quick. The only thing that could be better is that the parking could be tricky when it's busy. Especially when the store owner they share the plaza with doesn't allow any parking from restaurant patrons, even when they have all of their parking stalls empty. The store owners obviously haven't tried the noodles yet.
We dropped by for lunch with friends. The place was busy but we were seated quickly. Tried the half and half by way of an introduction. Yummy. The seafood soup is awesome. And the black bean sauce very good. Hole in the wall is a great description of the place. Small and popular, the staff seem justly proud of their food. Seek it out for a unique experience.
We had a craving for korean chinese food after coming back from Korea. We were surprised to see how similar this tasted with what we had in Korea. We got 1 beef and 1 seafood spicy noodle and they both tasted pretty good. Not too spicy but it had a nice kick. We both found the soup a bit oily but I guess it's somewhat expected. We'd definitely come back and try the deep fried pork dish as everyone else around us was getting it
This place is what I consider a hole in the wall...hidden gem...no hype. Truly authentic Korean, owners are Korean, and majority of the diners are Korean. When we sat down, I thought this is what Korea would be like... I think. I even saw a diner eat sitting cross legged with their shoes off..
Your not going to see any Korean side dishes, or hotpot, or Korean BBQ here. It's soups, noodles, rice, chicken and beer. I can truly appreciate that! It's different and delicious.
We ordered the noodles in seafood black bean sauce and the tomorrow garlic fried pork. Both were very good. I definitely need to come back and try the glass noodles.
Plenty of street parking too. Inside is not very fancy.
This place is a hidden GEM! The food is fresh and flavourful. I have a few favourite dishes that I consistently order and I am always amazed at how well the dishes are executed and how fresh the ingredients are. Try the fried chicken with jalepenos, deep fried pork in either tomato or red pepper sauce and dumplings. Their noodles dishes are also amazing.
When we decided to pop into San Dong for lunch, we were expecting to find bibimbap on the menu, but to our surprise it wasn't offered. So with the servers advice we selected a couple of popular dishes to try, and we were pleasantly surprised. The black bean noodles and spicy seafood soup were both tasty. The broth of the soup reminds me of goulash in some way (must be the paprika and sweet onions) and the amount of heat was perfect! I have to admit that seeing the picture of the black bean noodles on the menu seemed a little intimidating at first, but after tasting it, it was probably one of my favourite dishes of the day. The last dish we tried was the tofu and shrimp with spicy sauce. Although the taste was okay, I found the texture of the sauce to be a little too gelatinous for my liking - I think they used too much corn starch. Overall, I really enjoyed the food, and the service was good, especially tending to my little toddler while he made a mess!
I have always loved noodle. When I used to live in Marda Loop I would come here almost every week. Now that I live in downtown I don't come to this place very often. Today I did and boy am I glad! I used to order their spicy seafood noodle soup (my super favorite). Nowadays I try to eat a little less spice and to my surprise they now seem to have 3 versions of the seafood noodle, one with "two peppers", one with "one pepper" and one with no pepper on the menu. I had the "one pepper" version and it's still a little hot but was it good!
For this "seafood noodle in white soup" version that I had, the soup is probably the same soup they used for the beef noodle which I don't mind at all, because it still tastes great. It's not overly salty. They use delicious noodle too - it's always very al dente.
I wish they had a location closer to downtown and I can go there every week again!
I came around 2pm to San Dong because I really wanted some jjangmyun. It's a pretty small restaurant but it wasn't busy the time I went. I got the bowl that gives you half of the jjangmyun and half of this spicy seafood noodle soup. Both were delicious. Especially with the pickled radishes they provided. We also got a small sweet and sour pork which I really enjoyed. The small is more than enough for two to three people. The price threw me off though, for $18. Overall, I enjoyed coming here and will definitely be back!
It's really good,, I don't really like jajangmeyon very much but it changed my mind. Worth it. It's actually pretty cheap too.
The only thing was my friend and me were gonna get seafood pancake however they only serve it after 8pm.
My go-to place for Korean style Chinese cuisine. This place is small and is always busy during peak hours. Even though there are only 2 servers working, dishes come out very fast and they are fairly attentive. I recommend this place!
Their best dish is the half spicy and half black bean noodles! You get a good mix of spicy and flavour. Super good and authentic. Korean take on Chinese cuisine.
This place is fantastic!! Always fresh and always delicious! Definitely worth checking out. We come here for lunch often and it's become one of our favorites.
Omg, I never expected that there was an authentic Korean Chinese restaurant here in Calgary! This place is the best place ever to dine in!!! No doubt. The spicy noodle soup is so *ucking good. Omg I am so craving for it.
I like the jja jang myun and jjam pong from this cozy restaurant. If you come with someone that doesn't like to share I love how you can order a bowl that's half half! I like the jjam pong broth it's nice and flavorful. The servers are pretty attentive. I heard that the cold noodles are good so I need to try to come back before summer is over.
Had the regular jja jang myun with seafood. Pretty solid offering with squid, shrimp and a few small scallops. Tang Soo Yuk was good as well. Not too greasy or too crispy.
Prompt attentive service and decent prices.
Plenty of parking.
Comparable to Won Jang Gak in Edmonton in case you're from Edmonton or visiting.
Nice service at this authentic Korean Style dishes. Recommend the spicy & sour fried chicken. Half (black bean) & half ( spicy seafood) noodle dish.
Super yummy jajangmyun, but the spicy noodle is extremely spicy. I would not be able to finish the spicy noodle, but the jajangmyun helps to cool down. It's a small and cute location, service is pretty good. :)
Favourite place for Korean noodles! Probably because they specialize in it, but I think it's the best in Calgary and we don't really have a ton of selection here. If you don't have a huge appetite, you're probably fine sharing one bowl of noodles and a small deep fried pork dish. Parking sucks in front of the restaurant, walk a little and park behind it in the strip mall.
I like this place. Probably not the healthiest choice. Really greasy and lots of msg but it tastes so good. Has the best jja-jang-myun. Their fried rice is great .And I love their deep fried dumplings.
This place has really good jjangmeun. Their service is quick and food is served hot and fresh. The prices are pretty good and relatively lower than other places. This time I ordered a seafood fried rice that came with a side of the black bean sauce. This is a large portion for me so I managed to have some to take home. It has a bit of a homestyle kick to it. I don't come here often because I much prefer Korean food in Vancouver, but in Calgary's standards this is good.
Authentic San Dong Chinese/Korean noodles. First off, this place isn't Korean BBQ. Koreans don't just eat BBQ, just like American food isn't just Hamburgers. This is authentic & traditional Chinese/Korean noodles & rice. Shan Dong is a little place nestled between China/Korea and their food is distinctly their own. Do NOT expect Korean BBQ People!! So please take some of the other reviews with a grain of salt...
This is however a TASTY little place for Chinese noodles/rice with Korean Black Bean sauce (Jja Jang Myun or Ja Jiang Mien). Very simple but very flavorful, and the prices are very reasonable. I recommend the staple Noodles with black bean sauce, and if you want, get the spicy seafood/black bean sauce noodle mix. The black bean sauce might not be for everybody, but it's simple, thick and contains a bit of pork, onion, & a mix of spice. You can't go wrong in my mind, but don't expect a smorgasbord of food. This is comfort food, plain and simple, and so enjoy the simplicity of it.
Service could indeed be better, as the staff speak mostly Korean, but this just means this is authentic. If you look around, you'll be surrounded by mostly other Korean customers. You know you're in the right place.
Every good big city has at least 1 good San Dong style noodle house. This is Calgary's.
Good traditional food. Portions are huge!
Not Korean BBQ. This isn't a Korean BBQ resaurant. Its mostly noodle dishes and yes they don't load up the sea food. This is a very traditional style of Korean food. The black bean sauce and fresh noodles are awesome. Try the sweet and sour pork its delicious. Don't go in expecting westernized korean/chinese food you won't find it here this is the real deal.
Something different! Yay! Some friends brought me here for dinner today. I've never had Korean style Chinese food before but I'm always open to try new things. The bad reviews on here are totally unfounded. Come with an open mind. Don't expect standard Korean dishes. The menu has english and pictures of each dish which is really helpful. We had the fried dumplings which didn't come with a dip but that's ok, I made one with the soy sauce and spice powder on the table (I think it was either chili powder or paprika or a mixture of both). It was good. Then we had the dish with the buns (hope that helps). This was my favorite of the dishes we had. You take the steamed bun and make a pocket with your chopsticks, then stuff the filling into the pockets. Delicious. We also had the half spicy noodle soup and half black bean noodles. My friend really like the spicy noodle soup, I thought it was just ok because the broth had a graininess, as if thickened with slow cooked potatoes. The black bean noodles however were delicious. I've had this dish before but this was the best I've had it. The noodles were a fantastic chewiness, not too soft and not too hard. I will note that I did find everything just a bit under salted. Not that that is a bad thing because you can adjust to personal taste. I added a few (and I mean just a few) drops of soy sauce and it was perfect. I'll be back!
Do not expect BBQ. They don't have it. I had to laugh when reading the other reviews. If they really knew what this was before coming they would have had a different and better experience. It's a Korean (albeit Korean-Chinese) restaurant made for Koreans by Koreans, hence the minimal English and mostly Korean patrons. My mom makes the noodle with black bean sauce dish, so I grew up with it. Theirs is absolutely yummy. It's supposed to be room temperature. It's all about the noodles and sauce. The seafood is meant to be minimal. If you order it definitely pay the extra dollar for the fresh sauce. If you're nervous ordering this dish order the sweet and sour pork. You will not be disappointed. It's one of the best sweet and sour pork dishes I've ever had. It comes in one size definitely for sharing. The trick to enjoying this restaurant is to come with an open mind and order the sweet and sour pork unless you're used to the noodle dishes. Then get the half black bean and half Korean spicy soup. Yum!
The Fooderados Special - San Dong Banjeom. Another month, and another meeting of the Fooderados; this time we have taken our journey deep into the city's southwest to San Dong Banjeom for some Korean-style Chinese cuisine. It's not your run-of-the-mill style Chinese, but from research, shown to be extremely popular in Korea.
Each member of the party ordered a dish that they liked, and as the dishes came out from the kitchen, it filled our table with some wonderful flavours. To start was a cold beef dish (which some of us speculated to be kidney) which was absolutely delicious alone or with a piece of cucumber or jalapeno chile that came with the plate.
Other dishes, such as a "ginger beef" and the "spicy chicken" and the "Yurin sauce chicken" (which was the source of a few jokes throughout the evening!) appeared to me as Korean spins on some classic Chinese dishes (sauced chicken, etc.), and while I personally would not order some of those stereotypical dishes at a regular Chinese restaurant, the new spins put some new life into these dishes...one dish that I found strange was the seafood jajangmyeon, which had a darker sauce than the Cantonese version that I am used to.
For a party of 8, the bill came to a respectable $203 (including drinks, but before tip) -- approximately $22-$27 a person. If you like a new spin on your run of the mill Chinese, this place is definitely for you.
San Dong Banjeom is a convenient neighbourhood restaurant to visit when you’re in the mood for Korean/Chinese noodles. Quick and simple comfort food! Go-to dishes include: Half portion of Korean style black bean sauce noodles (jajangmyeon), half portion of spicy seafood noddle soup Sweet and sour deep fried pork
For those looking for traditional Korean dishes and the traditional Korean restaurant experience, they will be sorely disappointed. This is not the place to get “banchan” or order any type of BBQ meat to grill in the centre of the table.
San Dong Banjeom is not what you'd expect at a Korean restaurant. There's no bbq (sad face), no seafood hot pot (double sad face), bibimbap (more sad face). I later found out that it was Korean inspired Chinese food. Fusion, if you will. In the grand sche
