Families and friends gathered for a early morning Dim Sum at BobbyChao’s on a rainy day .☔️
Servers were friendly and greetings with a WoW welcome .. 😃👏🏼Food was tasty and hot ...😋🥟
I wish they add more items to their dim sum menu .. My favourite Taro meat balls was not the list too bad... Overall food was delicious and very good service...👌🏼
If you're ever in the NW definitely try out Bobby Chao's. We came here for dim sum and was impressed by the variety of items they had to offer. We ordered the 1) Bobby Chao Peanut Dumplings (generous filling of meat and peanuts). With the peanut dumplings you can really taste the essence of the peanuts. 2) Seafood dumplings (unique wrapping presentation with a good balance of scallops and shrimp). The seafood dumplings were saucy with lots of scallop. 3)
The deep fried shrimp wontons (heavy filling of shrimp and the wontons had a golden look). These golden wontons had a nice crunch biting into it and flavor was good. 4) The beef tripe (good mix of scallions, tripe and ginger). The beef tripe was probably my least favorite as it didn't taste as fresh. 5) The bbq crepe (thicker crepe but chunks of bbq pork meat). They have a separate kitchen where they marinate the bbq pork asian style so you know it's fresh.
The dishes here are around $6 to $8 per dish but the quality and taste is worth the price paid. Now after being this full I'll probably pass out.
Can never say no to Bobby Chao’s! I live in Lebanon and trust me, I crave it but can’t fulfill my craving, it’s real torture for foodies! Their Pho soup is the best! Hits the spot! And the duck is delicious, glazed, sweet and fatty. I enjoyed everything I had there. I’m happy they are expanding and wish them even more success.
Went to Bobby Chaos for dim sum on a Friday afternoon. It's been so long since we've been here and was pleasantly surprised that it has been renovated. The restaurant is bright, modern and clean inside. We were greeted immediately by a waitress who pointed to a table and arrived shortly to wipe it while apologizing that it wasn't clean (which was understandable as the restaurant was full). She asked us for our tea order and made small chat about being off for work during the holidays.
Within a minute, another waitress showed up to ask for our tea order as she set the table. This same waitress could be overhead awhile later asking the kitchen why no dishes had come out for our table. It might not seem like a big hing, but this service at a Chinese restaurant doesn't always happen and should he acknowledged.
Rice pot w preserved meats $7.99
-includes two kinds of Chinese sausage, duck, pork belly and vegetables. You receive a side of soy sauce which you drizzle over. While the rice wasn't cooked in the pot (I miss the crusty pieces of rice against a clay pot), the rice still had subtle flavors of meat and it was also a good portion.
Steamed beef balls $5.75
- soft and moist
- 3 beef balls
Steamed spareribs in black bean sauce $5.25
Seafood dumplings w XO Sauce $5.99
- 3 large dumplings with big pieces of shrimp inside
- no XO taste though
Pretty good place for dim sum & dinner. One of the best dishes is the braised duck with taro. Make sure you call in advance for the dish. I find that the dishes are seasoned just right. Will definitely come back again.
Great peaking and very good vermicelli. Vietnamese soups not so good. Order from here at least 2 times a month. Best Chinese food in crowfoot/nosehill/symonds valley area.
Great food, Great service.

We got a flyer for this place two weeks ago and decided to give it a try. We have had take out twice and eaten in once... It is SO good!!! The dim sum menu is amazing, everything is so fresh and fragrant. I've noticed a few reviews complaining about the staff, we have not had this experience at all. Everyone we have encountered has been very warm, friendly and welcoming. This is definitely our new go to spot! :)
First time trying out this place and the food is good. We sat at one of the private rooms that they have (very convenient for family dinners) and the service is awesome. Everything was well seasoned, nothing was over cooked, presentation was good. The thing I love the most was the chasiu pork, IT WAS SO GOOD, perfectly seasoned, perfectly fried, the crunchiness of the skin and the tenderness of the meat OMG, you must try it if you have the opportunity to go there! Another thing that I liked was the deep fried doughnut with sweet sauce, perfect appetizer or dessert. I definitely recommend this place!
The food here was absolutely delicious. Everything was so flavourful and the chilli oil they had on the table added a nice kick of spice to everything. I will definitely be going back to try more items on the menu!
I think dim sum is descent here but girls dinner it changes. The food was okay... when you consider the type of food and alternative places you could go, there is better and cheaper... I saw reviews that wrote "the food was $13 and should have been priced at $2"... for me the worst was looking at your credit card to find they charged Twice for the food!
*update* they credited with cash once I spoke with the owner. She photocopied my credit card bill *
Great Dim Sum. What used to be our regular Chinese restaurant in NW Calgary (Peking Garden) has had serious public health difficulties recently and so we anxiously sought an alternative. We have had Dim Sum twice now at Bobby Chao's and have pretty much decided that it will be that alternative. The restaurant is not crowded but is fairly full, with a mix of Chinese and Caucasian customers. It seems to be scrupulously clean. We have found service to be very pleasant and attentive, despite a slip-up on our first visit that should not have happened but was very well handled. The food itself is invariably good and arrives piping hot: relatively mild flavours on the whole with some very different and quite sophisticated sauces using a lot of fresh ginger.
The Shrimp/Cilantro steamed dumplings, the various rice crepes, the shrimp egg rolls and the salt and pepper squid are particularly good. The squid is in a lunch size portion when ordered as part of Dim Sum and both my wife and I think it the best we have ever eaten, anywhere: more spicy than most of the other dishes, hot and crisp, not overloaded with onions as this dish all too often is, with slivered red peppers a nice additional touch. We shall be trying the take-out service shortly.
Overall, strongly recommended for Dim Sum.
Good food. Actually i've been going to this restaurant a few times. So far, the experiences with the food have been good. I've both stayed in for meals and done take out a few times. The quality and amount of the food i've had was pretty good.
I've had a difficult time finding a restaurant that even makes congee. Even in china town. This places serves good congee. I cannot complain about the food, it's great.
Service hasn't been that bad either. Sometimes a bit slow when not so busy. Don't know if it's me, the waitress I had seemed more receptive to the asian speaking customers that came in. However, her service was satisfactory.
Love the food here.
Authentic. Busy.. Many menu items to explore! We sometimes get take-out and order our favourites but vow to try other menu items. Bobby Chao has three spaces: Bobby Pho which has a casual sit down area; next to it a take -out BBQ counter. The BBQ counter had a couple of hanging Peking duck and other yummy items. Another door takes you into the larger slightly more dressed up restaurant. On Labour Day evening, the restaurant was packed with families who left by 7:30 or so. We arrived with a reservation, at 7 and they were really busy but I think they would have fit us in.
We ordered our favourites --Salt and Pepper Squid, long green beans in garlic sauce, and tried Bobby's beef in special sauce which was a bit sweeter. Our friends added chicken in cashews, and a noodle dish. We had pork dumplings as well. Everything tasted fresh and was served hot. The portions are very large.
The servers were a bit overrun but happy to serve. Bobby Chao himself was the chef that evening. This is his only location.
Next time we do take out, we will try the BBQ and another time, some of the weirder sounding menu items. Honestly, when I saw some of the interesting food items heading over to a large family table near us, I wished I could slide my chair over.
We plan on a family dim sum one weekend though they serve dim sum daily.
I love their fu kin fried rice, and its a pretty good place to eat for take out... It gets smokey in the restaurant and wouldn't recommend bringing any kids there .. You'll smell like Chinese for sure but I found another place .. Sorry bobby chao gotta let you go
We've only ever gotten "Take Out" in the past from Bobby Chao's, and it's been consistently okay. I think their portions are slightly larger than you get from other places, so that's always a plus.
Last night my dad was treating, so we decided we'd eat IN the restaurant for a change, rather than bring it all home. It was a very mediocre dining experience I must say. The place has zero ambience, and the two front end staff were about as friendly & personable as a couple of robots. The food was still good enough, but I think next time we "go out" for Chinese, there's much better options near-by for a more memorable dining experience. We WILL continue to patronize Bobby Chao's, but only on a Take-Away basis.
Great Chinese "fondue". Went here last year and I loved their Chinese fondue (da-bee-noe) because it also included fresh fish, which is now rare with Chinese fondue.
Great Take-away Chinese. I don't know why I waited so long to order from Bobby Chao's. I've heard good things for some time. I'm going to chalk it up to not ordering delivery very often and having a few favourite Chinese places we go to whenever we get the craving.
The website is under maintenance so I was not able to choose something interesting and feeling lazy, I had no desire to drive over and look. I figured what I'd do was just ask for three of their "Best" or signature items with some rice. I'd hoped the person on the phone would understand but sadly they had no idea what I was talking about. I ended up having them more or less argue me into the western style they thought I'd like, I wound up with Ginger Beef, Almond Chicken, and House Fried Rice. Oh, well when the wife gets home she can order in Cantonese next time and I now have a menu.
The delivery time was about 35 minutes, which was quite good in my book. The driver made sure to point out that there was a menu in the bag for me. They also had Debit-at-the-door, a thing I think all delivery places need.
The food looked very good and the portions were large. The food filled the containers completely. There were 3.5 full pieces of chicken in the one and normally I'd expect half that for almond/lemon chicken. The amount of shrimp, BBQ pork and other things in the rice was high, and the ginger beef touched the dome lid on it's container. Very good value.
All of the dishes were hot and fresh. I'm not one to normally like western style take-away Chinese due to it usually not being high quality but this was surprisingly good.
Suffice to say that I'll be ordering from Bobby Chao's the next time I feel like Chinese delivery. Next time though I'll be able to get what I want from the Chinese menu.
My most favorite Chinese restaurant. Since I moved to Calgary 3 years ago I have always been a fan of Bobby Chao. I live in NW so I was so happy when they moved down here too lol
Their dimsum is okie but I find the real kick is in their dinner menu! If you want to try real Cantonese foods, here is the place!
The reason why I like this place is that compare to other Cantonese restaurant, all of Bobby Chaos dishes are either the same or even better ,not worse; the amount of food is also quite decent and the price is just average .
I would highly recommend you try the Lamb Hotpot (don't forget to order a side of Hofan noodle to eat with it) , the Peking Duck course, baked scallop, and that rice wrap with crab inside.
Very good. My parents were in town and I was looking for a good Cantonese style restaurant. Went there on a recommendation from a friend. The food was very good, I especially liked the oysters in black bean sauce. Considering good seafood isn't easy to get in Calgary this passed the test.
The Many Faces of Bobby Chao's. Our family has been to many manifestations of Bobby's restaurant, from the tiny location in the Southeast, to the Shamrock(?) Hotel near the Manchester Yards, to their location in Chinatown, before finally settling in their current location in Edgemont -- and for me, they have done no wrong.
One of my earliest memories was a wonderful stewed stuffed duck (Shanghai style), and a pork belly soup laced with Szechwan peppercorns. The crispy taro duck was another...today, some of the aforementioned dishes may be available only by request, but from the simple to the sublime Bobby has aced it all. Even Singaporean curry noodles (Singchow tsaomai)!
Average dim sum, super close location,… go for the zhaliang!
When you look at Chinese cuisine, I find it to be an interesting study in regionalism. While we often lump “Chinese” food together into one category, I can think of no other culture that has such a clear differentiation in ingredients, styles, and techniq
