We were meaning to go to another Japanese place but their hours were inaccurate and so therefore closed on our trip through. This was highly aggravating, and I won't lie, it was going to affect my visit to the next place that I go to. Or so I thought.
As we were driving down the street to leave the area we stopped to see El's Japanese restuarant. We went inside and sat down and we were the only table but hey it was a Sunday night.
The location was clean but not a lot of reading material up in terms of advertising or featured stuff except for one chalkboard that had stuff on it.
The menu had a lot of items and as with most Japanese places there is word soup when you try to pick items out of the menu. We ended up having seaweed salad miso soup and a few rolls.
The portions were very good, we had enough to have leftovers for later. The Miso soup was fresh and one of the big highlights was the seaweed salad. Normally there is a lot of fishy aftertaste or small portions of which this particular location had neither. Their seaweed salad was on point.
I ordered a roll that had unagi and three cheese types in it. It was awesome, it was hot crispy, and filling.
One thing I noticed was that all of their roles were well packed with fish and not rice so you can tell the quality and love they put into their preparation.
Definitely coming back.
So far, tastiest sushi in calgary. I like coming in to their place for some good sushi! It's a small sushi joint in SW. I like sushi so much and I recommend this place.
My go-to Japanese in marda loop! Place is small, I usually take out. Specialty rolls are awesome! Way better than the Globefish across the street...
Small authentic Japanese restaurant. They have a great selection of rolls. Service is a bit slow as it seems to be a family run restaurant.
The menu was a bit confusing but they have lots and lots of rolls to pick from. My gf and I had the volcano roll and superstar maki (this was really good and perfectly crunched). The rolls were decently portioned. The toro sashimi melted in my mouth. Oddly enough the tea is the thing I'll complain about as it was super light like water. I will definitely be back to try their other rolls!
I have yet to find a better sushi place in Calgary than Els. I'm not talking about the 'dining experience' but the actual food quality and taste. I try other places but always go back to Els....dine in or take out. They usually fill orders in 15-20 mins. One con is parking...there is parking available around back if you aren't driving a hummer or something else obnoxious...it does get pretty tight back there.
I actually wanted to come here for E week during ABC’s of YYC, but we went to Escoba instead with my mama for her Birthday. I passed this place again going to Phil and Sebastian’s and suggested to John we had to try this place!. Tuna and Salmon Sashimi– 4 slices of tuna and 4 slices of salmon- $15.95
I remember wanting to come here for E week, but my mama picked Escoba instead. Couldn't wait to try this place out. It's small and they don't sell alcohol (which was fine with me, John was sad). The sashimi was so fresh and no frozen bits whatsoever. The rolls were all delicious and different. The kamikaze roll was a large roll and had a great spicy sauce on top! The kiwi paradise was so refreshing and the volcano maki had chunks of fish on top as well as a nice piece inside the roll. The chopped scallop sushi had large chunks and wasn't overwhelmed by mayo. Can't wait to come back!
I've walked passed el's hundreds of times and never thought to step in. Today I was craving sushi and didn't want to go to globe fish so we decided to give it a shot. The first thing I noticed was that the restaurant was very clean. I enjoyed my chicken teriyaki bento box. The California rolls and salad were good. However, they gave very little rice and I had to get an extra side of it.
I have somewhat mixed feelings about this place. Decided to drop by for lunch after seeing some good reviews. The place was empty when we got there which puts me off a bit, but we still sat down and ordered.
Pros: service was great. Our server was friendly and efficient. Food was also excellent. I had a bento box and my friend had some rolls. Both orders were fairly big for the price and it was good quality.
Cons: only one major con - the atmosphere. The restaurant, while in a great location, isn't very pretty. Clearly the attention is put elsewhere.
As a result I would recommend for some take out but would probably no go back for the dining experience.
Love this place , excellent food , and nice staff ! We go here often for sushi and udon. It's small so go early ... It's worth it. Portion size is good too , so not pricey for what you get.
