I really like their chicken. We also tried their shrimp which was fantastic. I'm in love with their Mardi Gras mustard sauce. It's like a horseradish meets Dijon sort of dipping sauce and it's amazing.
The shrimp is super succulent and the Cajun fries are not to be missed!!! Our go to solution for the freezing Calgary cold. Good that their drive through is open even in the late hours.
Honestly for a fast food place, they are pretty good. If you can't handle the spicy, you have a bad tongue. The prices are very reasonable, and they have a lot of variety with their sides. Ultimately, the spicy chicken here is why I return and they often have seasonal things to change things up occasionally.
The apple pie tasted like a scrumptious churro. The pastry crust was thin and crisp, covered with a fine dusting of cinnamon and sugar. The apple filling had a gel-like consistency but it still tasted like a delicious balance of apples, cinnamon and sugar. I would order this again.
I stopped in here here once before to test out the junk food. I liked it. This time I ordered the 12 piece family package, fries, onion rings and gravy. It was all fantastic tasting junk food!! In a way I am glad they are not in the Richmond Hill area otherwise I would be going there all the time, and turning into a blimp! Yes it all tasted way better than KFC. Definitely would get more next time I am in the SE Calgary. Like most people, this junk food is really hard to resist!!!
FYI: I had one giant wing, some fries and a helping of onion ring as soon as I pulled away from the pickup window. All was fantastic! 15 minutes later at home I had more of the same, everything still decently warm and crispy. All was still fantastic! 7 hours later I ate two more chicken pieces, fries and onion rings with gravy, all was still nice and crispy after reheating in my toaster over at 300f for 10 minutes. Tasted fantastic, to my astonishment. It actually tasted good cold too!! LOL !! Great tasting junk food!! 7/11 fried chicken would be #2. But this junk food joint is definitely # 1 for fried chicken, fries and gravy.
I went inside to eat the chicken and other things and it was not too bad. The chicken has some sort of cleaner or crispier taste than the fast food restaurant, "KFC." The chicken is less oily as well. The fast food restaurant has corn and biscuits you can eat as well. The corn is a whole cob of corn or at least half of a cob. The bicuits were on the saltier side, so I did not enjoy it as much. The service was friendly and got our order right. The prices for the food is inexpensive and family combos are fulfilling.
Stopped in one night on our way home. Got the meal with 8 pieces of chicken and sides. Onion rings were terrible, soggy, limp, and bland. The biscuits were incredibly salty and dry. The chicken was very good though. The coating was nice and crispy, and the chicken on the inside was moist and juicy. The spicy chicken was just that. Would come again just for the chicken, skip the sides though.
When Siddall thinks Popeye’s – it’s the supplement place where you buy giant barrels of protein powder and receive these shaker cups that begin to overfill your cupboards. When I think Popeye’s however, it’s all about the fried chicken. Popeye’s opened on 17th Avenue SE this past winter, while it was to the chagrin of some locals, it was to the fried chicken delights of others. I didn’t make it to Popeye’s until earlier this month when a co-worker and I was in the area. Never one to say no to fried chicken we decided to stop in.
I still think KFC is a bit better than Popeyes. Sad to say more grease and softer skin is a bit more appealing to me. One thing Popeyes is better is the chicken for sure is much juicy but slightly saltier.
Besides the crazy lineup and cramped eating area, I enjoyed my first time eating here. We ordered the family meal: 8 Piece Bonafide Meal which came with 1 side and four hot buttery Biscuits. I tried the Mashed Potatoes as my side and it was covered with flavourful Cajun gravy. The spicy chicken was juicy and moist, though I personally didn't find it spicy but that's probably because I eat a lot of hot food. But the flavour and seasoning on the chicken were great. The Biscuits were fluffy and fresh, loved them. Next time I will try the Cajun fries instead of the mashed potatoes. Granted this is more expensive than KFC but I did enjoy Popeyes and will be back.
Was ecstatic when I heard they were opening a Popeyes in Calgary as it was one of my favourite chains in America. And I'm glad to say that my expectations were met when I tried Popeyes in Calgary. I have probably been here around 6 times since it opened and haven't had a bad experience yet. The spicy chicken is always fresh and juicy as well as the fluffy biscuit and the Cajun mash which is my favourite side.
Since Popeyes has opened I haven't been able to eat any other fried chicken as it does not compare in taste! I will continue to come and eat this delicious chicken.
Tip: make sure you ask for honey and drizzle it on the spicy chicken and biscuit , it'll take it over the top!!
Check it out !
The Cajun chicken combo was delicious and only $8.49. I know it's fast food but I like it. Fried chicken reminds me why I am not vegetarian. It was Quite a bit better than KFC, Wendy's or Mary browns. I was there at 4:30pm on Tuesday (today) and still very busy! Got 2nd last parking spot. And last table. The service is quick and friendly. And they are good at upselling. The bathroom and dining areas were very clean.
I don't understand why people have rated this so low. I've loved the spicy little kick from the spicy chicken. The gravy was something my boyfriend and I have never tasted before. Worked so well with the Cajun fries and chicken. Definitely recommend. There's clearly a reason it was packed inside and the line up was super long for the drive
Thru. Definitely worth it. Will be back
I found that I loved Popeye's down in the States, and so after yearly outings trying to relive my childhood treat of KFC, I finally gave up on the inedible garbage served there and started trying anything else. Literally everything is better than KFC, but Popeye's is near the tops if not the top. As per one of the other reviewers, I too noticed that 17th Ave has become chicken row so I'll have to try some of the others as well - but I digress. Popeye's serves good size chicken portions, and if you go inside you will be served promptly. My order was quick, complete and properly packaged for take-out. The place was swamped with cars literally out on the street waiting for the drive through, so the prompt completion of my order was a bit of a surprise, but they do have wall-to-wall staff. You don't really want to be seated in the relatively cramped and crowded eating area. I got a 12 piece mixed spicy/normal. I'll have to try the spicy down in the States again, but here, it didn't do too much for me. It was definitely spicy, but didn't improve upon the flavour of the normal coating. I loved the mashed potatoes and the coleslaw was perfect. I guess everyone has something specific that they are looking for in coleslaw. For me, this was absolutely on the mark. As for the Cajun fries - meh. Biscuits - they're a southern thing: I don't see the fuss, but they were good enough. $40.00 for a 12 piece combo meal with one extra side. Worth it.
No complaints here !!! The place is packed but they have tons of staff and if you go inside rather then the drive thru it's super fast and efficient ! I have had Popeyes in other cities and this location is just as good. I wouldn't compare it to other fast food chains (as KFC makes me incredibly sick) we got a 8 piece mix (4 spicy and 4 regular), large Cajun fries, 4 biscuits, small mac & cheese and a ton of dipping sauces. Delightful and a good treat.
I was at Popeye's during lunchtime on a weekday and it was pretty busy. I got a 3 piece combo with spicy dark meat and beans & rice as my side, and all were very good. Chicken pieces were larger than KFC. I just found it to be a little too salty for my taste, but the amount of spice was just right.
Was just there for takeout. Got the fish & shrimp combo. Was pretty good except the 1 piece of fish looked like a piece of chicken, could barely taste the fish, ample shrimp, the biscuit wad light and fluffy. My daughter got a chicken sandwich (good), not many fries given as a side. However tasted pretty good, except for the fish. Will try again.
Would be nice to be able to park in the p.lot though, can't get in becauseof the line up for the drive through, very frustrating!!!
Went to new Calgary location last week , was expecting the huge line up as it's a new restaurant to us so I was ok with it. But had issue with ordering what I wanted. Was super stoked to have the hush puppies but they weren't on the menu like the commercial ( maybe it's an American thing only) so ended up with the butterfly shrimp meal - got the corn on the cob which was good but needed butter and salt , wasn't put in our bag as we left , also asked for cocktail sauce for dipping ( lady said they were all out. Also ordered two chicken breasts (spicy) the chicken was amazing love it and also ordered the apple pie which was also great. Over all we liked Popeyes and will be going back again. Thanks for the great food.
