Excellent dim sum. Slightly cheaper than Forbidden City. Very fast service & minimal wait despite busy lunch crowd. Has all the dim sum favourites & more. (5/5)
Just finished eating dinner here for the first time, talk about a busy place! The portions are a really good size so no need to order a ton. All the food that comes out of the kitchen looks so tasty! We ordered steamed rice, ginger chicken, pineapple sweet & sour shrimp and peking duck (one course). Everything was delicious and flavorful. The only thing I would’ve preferred is shredded duck instead of slices of the peking duck. Also it would’ve made it easier to roll in the wrap. Will definitely come again as there are many items on the menu I want to try!
Really great dim sum! My girlfriend and I came here on Saturday for brunch and had a great experience. We came at 1:00 just as the morning rush was slowing down. The food was hot, fresh and tasty and our service was prompt and friendly. I will definitely be back to try more items
Ginger Beef – the local takeout franchise actually has a location dedicated to dim sum in Harvest Hills….and it’s good. So good that despite residing in the burbs, it was packed on a Tuesday at lunch. I love the fact that the restaurant is exceptionally clean and open – so open in fact, that you can see right into the kitchen…with it’s stacks of giant bamboo steamer baskets (I didn’t know these existed prior to this visit)! I was excited to order! We stuck with safe items like steamed dumplings, green onion cake, Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce, sticky rice in lotus leaf and shrimp in rice crepe. Next time I will try congee. The wide round tables are also great for visiting with large groups, and the larger the group, the more dishes you can share. Cost was ~ $20/pp, but again it depends on your size of group. This meal really hit the spot and may have induced my labour later that night. ha!
Probably some of the best dim sum you'll find outside of Chinatown! The interior is very inviting, and it's fun to be able to watch the kitchen through a glass wall during your meal. Service isn't overly friendly, but it's not rude either, and it's definitely very efficient. The Steamed BBQ Pork Buns ($5.25) were really good, but I do prefer a slightly sweeter pastry. The filling in both these and the Baked BBQ Pork Buns ($5.25) was generous and nicely seasoned: a good ratio of sweet, salty, and umami. The Steamed Creamy Custard Buns ($5.25) and the Baked Sweeten Egg Tart ($5.25) were also very good: an eggy, perfectly sweetened custard inside a fluffy bun or lovely flaky pastry. The Coconut Sponge Cake ($5.25) was definitely a highlight: a four tiered, golden, moist sponge cake with a faint coconut-y taste. The Steamed Shrimp Rice Crepes ($5.95) were pretty good, however the crepes were not quite as nice as some I've had at other dim sum places. The Deep Fried Shrimp Balls ($5.95) had a nice bouncy texture and came with a tasty sweet sauce. The Deep Fried Chinese Donut ($2.00) wasn't terribly exciting - I might have preferred if it came with a sauce or topping of some kind. The Golden Balls stuffed with Red Bean Paste ($5.25) were really, really good: a perfectly fried glutinous rice ball filled with a generous amount of silky, subtly sweet red bean paste. We also tried the Ginger Beef ($5.95) - nice pieces of beef and crispy batter. While not my absolute favourite dim sum in Calgary, it's still a pretty solid option - definitely worth checking out!
AMAZING!!! Absolutely amazing. We got the pork dumplings and the 2 person meal deal with wonton soup, spring rolls, s&s pork, and lemon chicken w/ chicken fried rice. We will be making this our regular Chinese food place. Hands down.
always come to Ginger Beef for dim sum as it is a short distance from our home and it is clean since they have a giant wall of windows that looks directly into the kitchen. Not only do you know how clean and fresh your food is (as let’s be honest, there’s some restaurants that you question), but it is fascinating to watch the intricacies in making dim sum dishes.
The prices are a bit higher (around $5/dim sum dish) compared to other dim sum restaurants but did I mention the window where you can see how clean and fresh your food is?
I should also mention the service is still “Asian” service where the goal is just to serve you, not provide you with a friendly smile or any type of customer service that you may be accustomed to at other restaurants.
The open kitchen was an immediate attraction and the food was served hot and fresh, unlike a lot of the regular Dim Sum places in Calgary. Good service, tasty food and some items I had never had before, like roasted turnip in puff pastry....delicious. Taking a vegetarian and a Dim Sum hater there for brunch on Saturday; they will be happy!
Came in on a Saturday night after a movie. Tried sakė for the first time. We tried the deep fried wings, ginger beef and chicken fried rice. The quantity is good enough. 2 ppl couldn't finish it. The best part is they give u fortune cookies when u r done.
Great peking duck, prices are decent, service is good not sure why overall it is only 3.5/5 I think its more like 4/5. They did raise their prices a few times thats the only thing.
Living in the area ,I have had take out and dine in several times, its always been consistant,My wife totaly enjoys the Ginger Beef, the salt and peper squid was nice and crispy, all the noodle dishes were hot and tasty, the peking Duck was quite good, I was with a fairly large group 20 ppl and while everyone argeed that the food was good, again nothing that would blow you out of the water, but I eat out a lot and its getting harder to be really blowen away....but this is good, I thought the service was a bit on the slow side, however on the whole it was nice dinner and I left content, thanks
Invited to dinner here in a group of 10. The main course was Peking duck 3 ways (Peking duck with crepes, Tofu soup, and stir fry duck noodles). Other dishes included ginger beef, beans, pork chop, pork dumplings, chicken. The free dessert was sweet tofu. Everything is delicious. Reasonable service given that it was very busy. Price is also reasonable. Good value for what you get. Will definitely go back!
Love the dim sum here. The food is always made fresh. They have the best "xiao long bao" in the city with the insides filled with a nice broth. I also love their tofu dessert that is served only on Sundays and it's only $3.25 for this huge bowl.
I came here for dim sum and I actually like this place. I really enjoyed how they had a glass wall so your able to look into the kitchen. Also the food was actually tasty. I think the price is similar to all the dim sum places around Calgary so come here for the taste. Also, service is the same as any Chinese dim sum place.
Also, just like any dim sum place some early to get a seat!
This place is very easy to find as it in next to the movie theatre. Also tons of parking spaces available.
Had Dim sum here today. Probably ordered way too much for four people, but it's all so good, how could we resist!
We had congee, siu mai, steamed pork buns, xlb's, rice crepes with prawns, prawn dumplings, salt and pepper squid and a couple of other dishes.
Always love coming here for dim sum, and especially love the siu mai and the salt and pepper squid. Better than any calamari you can get in most western restaurants to be honest.
This is a great place to come for traditional dim sum on a weekend, and it's pretty reasonably priced. Probably about 5 or 6 bucks per dish. We had 12 dishes for 72 bucks between 4 of us, and that was more than enough food!
Definitely recommend it. We've been here loads of times and it's always great. Today, with it being the weekend, there was a big line, so expect a bit of a wait. Not sure if they take reservations unless you've got a big party.
Will be coming back here again and again
Great replacement to what used to be here. Food was hot and fresh . Came at a pretty busy time and still didn't wait long. Service was fast, and we didn't have to ask for much. Check it out if your in the mood for some fresh food that's tasty. I would vote one of the top places in the north end of Calgary.
Ginger Beef House is a huge improvement from the Chinese buffet that previously took up that spot.
It's become one of my two spots for dim sum in the NW. It's a huge restaurant that can accommodate large parties if you can get in at the right time (make a reservation if you can).
The dim sum is good. Maybe not the top of my favourite spots in Calgary, but it's reliable and a huge menu to choose from so there are some good finds. In particular I'll always give a shout out to any place that serves decent pork soup dumplings. I haven't found many places in Calgary that can do this, so I'll embrace any place that offers them.
Prices are around $5 for most plates and servings are pretty conservative (four pieces in one serving). It's also an order by menu spot so you get what you want and it all comes out really quickly. In fact, it's an open kitchen concept so if you want to see the action in the kitchen you can peer in. If you haven't been here for dim sum, definitely give it a shot.
Excellent Peking duck! It's a 3 course that includes soup, rice and Peking duck. Well worth it. Their bbq meats are pretty decent too. The servers are actually nice here compared to other servers at other Chinese restaurants. It's a spacious restaurant and with lots of tables! If you come for dim sum, expect to wait!
A very good place to go to for a quick dim sum since its close by (don't have to drive downtown), love the baked custard buns 😍 Siu Mai is really good and well portioned, when going at the right time wait isn't that bad. Would not get dinner here though, last time we ordered for take out, food was overly greasy......
We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and were briskly greeted and brought to our enormous round table. I'm glad to have dawdled as I passed the floor to ceiling glass wall into the steam kitchen - it is an impressive feature. The food was fresh and arrived quickly to be placed upon the giant lazy susan on our table where a pecking order soon formed as the impromptu tug of war ensued. The salt and pepper squid was crisp and tender - I recommend it. I tried the green onion cakes and enjoyed the salty delicate texture. I found the seasoning overall to be milder than one might expect from asian fare, but the broths and sauces cater less to the western palate and our host explained they were authentic. It was soon obvious this is a great choice for families or groups. Lots of action - this is a busy place!
Awesome ginger beef and chinese dishes! I've only had dimsum here once or twice, but everytime we do go, the food is always tasty and great! Definitely my go to for delicious ginger crispy beef!
We went to try some authentic chinese food at Ginger Beef Bistro House on the northside of Calgary and we did not regret going at all! It was one of the best chinese food I had in Alberta. The name was kinda misleading at first….thinking ginger beef would be white washed chinese food….but we were proven wrong!
Very traditional Chinese dim sum. They do not take reservation less than 7 people. Most of other places are not that good. They are usually very busy, so try to go in early or make it 7.
Love the food, love the dim sum! Definitely recommend the Chinese savoury carrot cakes and the dumplings! They are so good!
If you know people working there, the service is quite nice as they know you in person. The restaurant is very busy in the morning time so make sure you make reservation before going to ensure less waiting time! (They always have a huge wait line).
This place stands out for it's food in Chinese cuisine for Calgary. As someone who comes from Hong Kong and eats Chinese food regularly, this restaurant is one to drop by every now and then. Their prices are good, the food comes out relatively fast and tastes great. There's not many outstanding Chinese restaurants in Calgary besides the big chain of Forbidden City/Tpot, but this restaurant stands firmly as one of Calgary's best to offer in Chinese food while being family run and authentic.
Excellent dim sum made fresh to order! Nice and friendly service. Will definitely return and recommend to friends. High quality ingredients and generous portions.
Love the dim sum! Baked and fried custard buns are really good! Wouldn't recommend for dinner during busy nights because once our noodles were really greasy when we ordered take out, will definitely return, service is average I guess it's because they're usually really busy... Go early!
I have been regularly coming to this restaurant for a couple of years now, and while you might, like I did, brush this off because of the name, I urge you to give this restaurant a shot - it's probably the best dim sum in the north central part of Calgary.
Reservations: This restaurant is always busy during dim sum time (11-1PM) and dinner time (6-8 PM) but if you go at the beginning of the dining periods you can generally get a table. If you have a large party ( > 6 people) I'd call ahead so you can get one of the bigger tables with a lazy-susan in the middle to facilitate food sharing.
Decor: The restaurant is well lit with two sections - it is wheelchair friendly but the chairs are closely packed and when the restaurant is full you have to snake your way through the chairs. The kitchen is glassed-in and you are able to see the chefs at work making dumplings and pulling fresh noodles - and the kitchen is spotless! No dingy restaurant dirt here!
Food:
The dim sum is fantastic - the order system is by slip, and servers come by with the hot dishes and stamp off each item as it is complete. It's best to try to order everything you want at once as the server that takes the orders doesn't come around as often after the initial seating. My 'must-orders':
- Xiao Long Bao: This is the only restaurant in Calgary I've found that serves them with a good amount of broth, and proper skins. I like the pork ones best.
- Fried Eggplant stuffed with shrimp sausage
- Har Gow
- Deep Fried Shrimp Balls
- Deep Fried Custard Buns - these are amazing and I order them no matter how full I am and take them home.
Their plated dishes are also good - the hand pulled noodles with lamb are fantastic, and the 4-course peking duck meal is well worth it.
For dessert we get the fried bananas, which are dipped in hot toffee. These are amazing.
It's a great family restaurant, and almost always full of happy Asian families (which I consider a good sign for a restaurant).
If you have to choose a dim sum place in the North Central region, I'd choose this over T-Pot. While the service is equally poor as its neighbourhood competitor, the food consistency is better and a bit less salty. Dinner is not bad here too, it is a good place for take-out orders. I do miss the BBQ pork though.
Exceeded Expectations. Found Ginger Beef after investigating the candidates for best xiao long bao (pork soup dumplings) in Calgary, and had an excellent experience. Even the pot of tea was good, made with whole fragrant leaves. Two servers were attentive and exceptionally helpful- we ended up ordering two items that weren't listed on the menu (and which printed on our bill as Chinese characters), plus the XLB's and an order of the famous ginger beef. All 4 dishes were well-prepared, tasty, and served piping hot from the kitchen. About the XLB's, the dough was on the thicker side but there was a good amount of soup inside each one plus little pork meatballs. Very good and i'l happily go back the next time i'm in Calgary.
Needs to improve service quality. Food taste good. But not the service. It took a half hour to pay the bill. Someone should work at the front and take care of the bills.
Great service, great food. I enjoy the dim sum and dinner food here
Chinese Restaurant?. We decided to go to this "new-to-us" Chinese restaurant up in Country Hills area after a number of people said good things about it.
At first, as we drove up- my husband wondered if it was open- for there are not too many lights that illuminated the front of the place. But we were welcomed with a smile and my husband commented that it didn't look like a Chinese restaurant- but their fish tank harbouring a prehistoric fish and a view into the kitchen made me quickly forget about the décor.
The waiters and waitresses were dressed nicely and we were was politely shown to a table near the plexiglass looking into the kitchen.
We had ordered the 3-course Peking duck: 3 courses which consisted of 1) Crispy duck skin and breast meat served with thin Mandarin pancakes and cucumber and green onion with Hoisin sauce 2) Shredded Duck Meat Soup and 3) Duck meat with fried handmade noodles. In addition- from my husbands' co-worker- ordered the salt & pepper squid. Of course he and my brother had to order the hot & sour soup....for each of them.
The meal came out pretty fast, we started with the duck meat soup- which was about 5 min. after we had ordered, then the pancakes with the duck meat followed by the guy's hot and sour soup and finally the noodles and the squid. According to my brother, the hot & sour soup was spicy but my husband hoped it would be more sour. The squid was nice and crunchy and a bit spicy. Overall- the meal was quite satisfying.
Although- take note; when the waiter came and asked if we needed more pancakes which we actually had some left over duck, ask first what the charge would be. Forgot to look at the bill to see how much we got charged. Or at least I think we were charged for 6 extra ones. Some places charge $1 per extra pancake.
We finished off the meal with an un-ordinary complementary dessert: tapioca-taro-coconut pudding instead of the normal- red bean-in-sugar soup.
Overall- it wasn't too bad.
Went with a group of 11 here on a Saturday night. Place was busy but we were seated relatively quickly. Server was excellent and food was delicious. Ordered the three couse duck meal which was enough wraps for everyone plus some, it was fantastic. Scallop fried rice, ginger beef, salt n pepper squid, chow mien, all were very good. The main complaint about this place is that it shares parking with a theatre and lots of other places so finding a parking spot can be a pain.
Long wait on a Friday nights. I called for a reservation but they don't take them for parties under 6, there was 5 of us. However, the food is always excellent! 4 course Peking duck is delicious! We also order the sautéed shrimp with salted egg yolk (no shells) from the Chinese menu and it is divine. Ginger beef is pretty tasty & Chinese broccoli in garlic is flavourful. Service was also consistent and attentive.
Great Dim Sum!. Went there on a Sunday with 6 people. Was able to make reservations. Got a table beside the kitchen, fun to watch them make it from scratch. Delicious food. HUGE portions. Very clean place. Will go back again even though it's very far for us. Good service too.
Good food, poor service. We went here on a Thursday night, and it was surprising there was no line up. We've been here a number of times when it was packed. We were seated right away and had good service to the point our food was ordered. After that, the only service we got was when our food was delivered by the delivery lady - no one asked us if we needed more tea or water... service basically sucked. BUT we really like the food - the salt and pepper seafood is our favorite. And this time we tried the peking duck and the dumplings. The duck was cooked perfectly - so moist but not greasy - the skin was nice and crisp. The dumplings were very good! Their homemade chilli sauce is delish, and you can buy it to take home. Anyways, we will continue to go back because we like the food, but one has to have the time to hang out for a while...
Stick with the seafood dishes. Calgary doesn't have the best Chinese food offerings but this one is pretty decent relative to the competition available. it's a super busy restaurant so make reservations for dinner and prepare to wait a bit for dim sum.
They are known for their xiao long bao Shanghai pork dumplings where there's soup inside along with the pork. The key to this dish is a really savoury and flavourful soup and a melt in your mouth pork filling inside. The soup was good and the dumpling skin was pretty good but the pork ball was more stiff then I expected. Stilll good but not great.
We ordered the ginger beef dish only because the restaurant is named after that dish! It was too sweet for my tastes but then again I don't normally order ginger beef for that reason. The lemon chicken was disappointing - lemon sauce was too sweet and the batter chicken had no flavour.
For this place, stick with the more Cantonese style dishes - their seafood is exceptional. The halibut and a seafood medley dish with gai lan was really good. The peking duck was on par with most places I've dined at.
Place is packed with patrons, service is prompt and restaurant is clean.
Great atmosphere and good food however service can be very rude or unpleasant. Can be also very busy! Quality of service dips down drastically when they are busy which can be understandable to a degree but it is not acceptable to be asked 8 times if we are ready to order. We usually order the pork dumplings first as an appetizer which are very fresh and tasty. We order them first so that we can enjoy our appetizer without having the main course coming right away. This practice was not appreciated by the staff one time and we were hounded many times to order. We even had one order missing of the dumplings and we told the manager who came to our table that we didn't get a second plate and he basically called us liars because the ordering sheet on our table said only one order. We couldn't read the ticket because it was written in Cantonese/Mardarin. Very unprofessional to push us to eat and call us liars. The food is quite good overall but poor service makes us hesitate to go back.
Dim Sum. This place is packed on weekends. I've been for dim sum, dinner and a late night meal and I always enjoy the food. As with most Chinese restaurants, service is usually quick, but blunt. They bring you your food, but they don't stop to chat, which is fine by me! I appreciate the fact that we can snag an order list while we wait for a table. Usually, by the time we get a table we've already checked off what food we want. A server gets us tea, grabs the list and then it's game on! My favourite dim sum dish is sui mai. It's not the absolute best or the biggest here, but pretty darn good. I also enjoy the beef rice crepe. But the zaa leong (Chinese fried donut wrapped in a rice crepe) doesn't have enough of the soy sauce on the plate and they skimp out on the peanut sauce. Tripe here is good too as is the har gao. The xiao long bao is decent and it's always funny (in a sad way) when you watch someone try to eat one, but tear the skin. There goes all the juices! I'd definitely come back if I was craving dim sum!
Used to come here when it was a buffet.. It was average. I recently came back when my sister told me they turned into a dim sum restaurant and I'm glad I did. The food was great- classic dim sum and the dim sum viewing glass is a unique idea. Do yourself a favor and try their chili oil, made in house and probably the best seasoned chili oil I've ever tasted. They know it's good because the actually sell it by the jar!
Has improved significantly since it opened..... I went once when it opened and wrote it off the first time, went back half a year later because I heard it was better and was pleasantly impressed. Since then, have gone numerous times and have ordered take-out from them as well. Very consistent now -- for dinner, usually order 4 course Peking Duck special with lettuce wrap on the weeknights, along with their ginger beef. And it is very good! Dim Sum on the weekends is not bad for something close to home. They do have ok XLB...nothing to write home about and can be hit and miss with the soup juice in it....sometimes the juice makes it and sometimes it doesn't. Service has also improved -- some servers are friendlier than others but most are great! Overall, happy with Ginger Beef and definitely a good addition to the neighbourhood!
Hidden Gem! But as with all places, you have to know what to order. I was skeptical because it was a Ginger Beef chain - I am not a fan of western style Chinese food. But a friend told me that we finally had a place that served XLB (xiao long bao) in calgary so I was super excited to see how this place would compare to the joints in Van, HK & Taiwan. The menu highlights a small selection of popular Shanghai style dishes so that's mostly what we ordered. So far, my favorites are the xiao long bao (be careful not to puncture them or the soup inside will be lost, if you're a noob, YouTube it) and stir fried pork & lotus root with beancurd sauce. They also have a passable ja jiang mien (noodles tossed in meat sauce). We also tried the 3course Peking duck for $35 which was pretty good. The decor is modern and comfortable. Service was on the better end for a Chinese restaurant. And there's a cool view of the part of the kitchen that makes the dumplings. The XLB were very good. As good as most places in Van & even the Ding Tai Fung in HK. But definitely not as good as the Ding Tai Fung in Taiwan. I am just happy I don't have to drive to Van to get my XLB fix :D
I've been here 3 times since it has opened, twice for dinner and once for dim sum. The first time we came for dinner was when it just opened. Their 3 course Peking duck was on special for $35. We ordered that along with a number of other dishes. The actual peking duck course was a huge disappointment. The duck was dry and the sweet sauce was extremely gritty. It was a different sauce than the hoisin we're used to getting. I'm assuming that it's made in house but the sugar they used was not even close to being dissolved. We also decided to order the xiao long bao since we saw it being hand wrapped through their open kitchen. It turned out to be decent for what you can get in Calgary. It was juicy but not filled with as much broth as it should be. The potstickers were actually quite good with a perfectly crispy skin and juicy filling. The crispy fried chicken, satay beef gai lan and and stir fried green beans were on par with some of the other Chinese restaurants. The second time we came for peking duck was about a month later when it was no longer on promo. What a difference! The duck was actually plump and juicy compared to the first time and the sauce was properly cooked. I don't know if it was a poor night the first time or if they decided it was not worth the trouble to do a good job when it was on promo. The dim sum was pretty good although a bit pricey than the other places. When I tried the xiao long bao this time I found the quality to have deteriorated. The skin broke once we went to pick it up and the filling seemed dry. The lamb fried handmade noodles were very good! The portion is small but it's good enough that I'd order again. The service is nothing to rave about but I'd like to return again to try some of the more unique dim sum items.
Some of the best Dim Sum in Cowtown. There are not many Dim Sum places in Calgary that I would visit more than once in my life...However I have been visiting this specific Ginger Beef Bistro House on a near weekly basis for the past few months. The food quality is very consistent, and can hold its own with most mid-ranged Vancouver Dim Sum locations. The best is that the wait times are not as bad as some other popular Dim Sum locations in Calgary, and the pricing is also cheaper or on-par with other locations. My favorite dish here is their XO turnip cake. They also have some pretty neat items here that is not usually offered elsewhere (not at Dim Sum at least) such as pineapple bbq pork pastry (which is pretty tasty), Xiaolongbao (not bad) and tofu pudding (not bad) to list a few...
The decor is great, but seating is cramped. The staff at most Calgary Chinese Restaurants are lazy, not too bright and generally do not care about the customer but not at Ginger Beef Bistro House, their staff is great, they walk fast, they get you what you want, and even chat your table up sometimes for a good laugh.
I have also been here for dinner and although their dinner dishes were not nearly as good as their Dim Sum, it was definitely not bad either by Calgary standards.
Wonderful experience. Loved the fact that you could see all the work that goes into creating wonderful dim sum.
Suprised, in the good way.. When did it become the norm to expect terrible service and sketch seating at Chinese restaurants? I never realized how much ingrained into my head the idea of exclusively being able to get “authentic Chinese food” from the hole-in-the-wall-grime-on-the-windows/can’t-get-tea-refills-when-you-speak-English-or-isn’t-related-to-the-server kind of places, until I stepped foot into Ginger Beef. How wrong I was.
Thumbs way up for the level of staff decorum, service, and (gasp!) food. Our server was very accommodating to my very Chinese mother’s request of light salt and zero MSG usage. We ordered a wide variety of dishes ranging from Western style, dim sum, to traditional. The standouts were: the Shanghai Fried Noodle and Szechuan Style Noodle (not greasy, proper noodle length/width/texture), ginger beef, steamed lobster in ginger & green onion sauce, and grilled pickerel. The peeking duck dish was mediocre (doesn’t compare to Tai Pan) and the dim sum isn’t anything to write home about, but still, not a deal breaker by any means. I will be returning.
Best Dim Sum place in the city. My family loves dim sum just because we are Asian and have that palette. There are many restaurants in Calgary that serve dim sum but so far we found that Ginger Beef in Country Hills is the best we had in a long time. The food is really good quality, good service and you can see the chefs make their food meaning a very clean restaurant which is unusual for a Chinese restaurant. I would recommend the deep fried turnip rolls, and deep fried custard buns. If you live in the South..it's still worth the long trip up north for this restaurant. Remember different ginger beefs in Calgary have their own individual menu.
Service is Good. Finally a clean Chinese restaurant with good and friendly service. We went earlier in the evening and it was not too busy. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was good. We ordered the chicken with pepper sauce hot plate and I love the fact that it was all chicken and not filled with left-over veggies as filler. We will return.
We ordered from ginger beef bistro house it was excellent !Yummy food and not greasy . We asked for little salt and no MSG .They said no problem . Great new restaurant !
Later visits.... I've been back to Ginger Beef a few times for dim sum after my first review and found the quality has improved. They also introduce new dim sum dishes once in a while. I've also been there for dinner once but did not quite enjoy it. I find their dishes too small for the price and a lot of salt/msg is used. They have their new BBQ meats stand but again, the prices are very high and the meats left little to be desired for (dry, small portions). Therefore I'm only liking this restaurant for the dim sum.
-----06 Jan, 2012-----
Yet another dim sum restaurant. One of my friends and my mom told me about this new restaurant, especially recommending their pork soup dumplings (xiao long bao). Since they got me so excited about it I decided to have lunch here a couple of days ago. Thinking that the lunch rush would be way over by 1:30pm, imagine my surprise when I walked in to a busy crowd at the front door. But then, surely, the amount of people must mean the food was really good! After putting our names down on the waiting list, my brother and I waited roughly 15 minutes before we were sat down to our table.
I had no idea this was a dim sum restaurant. I was thinking maybe Shanghai style plates, so I was surprised again when the dim sum sheet was brought to me. Very standard items, with prices being slightly lower than the nearby T. Pot. Still, I had high expectations since the table next to me claimed they`ve been here several times. So... returning customers... surely that`s a good sign for good food!!
After placing our orders the food didn`t take too long to arrive. Can`t remember the order they arrived, but when the soup dumplings arrived... I was so disappointed. Small, shriveled, and lacking the gelatinous soup that makes the dumpling `soupy`. Also lacking in flavor. What was my friend and my mom thinking? The rice rolls were decent. It wasn`t oversteamed or soggy. Steamed shrimp balls on tofu was lacking taste of any kind. Deep fried shrimp balls were accompanied by a sweet and sour sauce... and man, did we drench those suckers in the sauce. The potstickers were of the thin skin variety... kind of like gyozas. I actually thought they were the most decent thing we ordered.
Overall I wouldn`t say I dislike the restaurant but it`s not that great either. I guess it`s just another option for dim sum in the N.W. and I swear the crowds are just there for the hype. Service was ok but slow - I recognized the servers from other surrounding Chinese restaurants. Pricing is average to a tad expensive (their stir fried noodle and rice dishes are expensive for the small portions). I was planning on returning to try their peking duck for dinner one day but... not sure when that'll be.
After sightseeing in downtown Calgary, C’s family took me to Ginger Beef in the NE area. It was a Cantonese restaurant, with a floor-to-ceiling glass window at the back wall so you can see all the chefs preparing the food.
It was quite empty when we went so we were quickly seated at a round table and the food started coming quickly. C’s mom had ordered the three course Peking Duck ($38), which was the standard Peking duck with pancake but the other parts of the duck are used to cook Duck Meat Tofu Gai Choy Soup and Shredded Duck Meat Fried Rice. I thought it was quite good since there wasn’t too much fat on the duck and the skin was crispy.
It was 1:30pm on a Saturday afternoon and since we had to go to Costco right after, we didn’t want to travel far. I wasn’t sure if it would be packed at Ginger Beef but thought we should try our luck anyway. Imagine my surprise when there was a few free tables and we got seated right away!
I think the Shanghai Style Juicy Pork Dumplings was a little disappointment for me. I was expecting a nice bit of broth when I bite in, but it was just a pork dumpling that was “juicy” – but no broth. It could be the fact it may have all leaked out, but I don’t know. The texture of the pork dumpling wasn’t as smooth as I would like it, but the taste wasn’t bad. Even though this may have been my least favourite dish of the experience, by no means was it “bad” or “gross”. So, overall, I really loved my experience here and think it’s one of the better dim sum places in Calgary. I’ll definitely be back, as long as they keep up their quality without increasing their prices!
Overall, a good place for dim sum with strengths in their in house made pastries and buns. Need to head back to try more of their dim sum dishes!
