The best Jamaican Patty I’ve had. I eat here weekly and always enjoy the food and the friendly staff.
Absolutely delicious! I especially loved the fall off the bone, tender amazing oxtail! We tried the roti, snapper and the jerk wings and all of the dishes we ordered were delicious and really hit the spot!
I love this place.
Tried this place for the first time a few weeks ago and have been back for more. Probably the best food I’ve eaten in a very long time. I would recommend anything on the menu. Perfect flavour combinations! Simply delish!
Incredible spot for authentic Caribbean fare. All the staff here are so sweet and helpful, instantly making you feel right at home. To start we ordered the fried plantains ($4.95), which were fried to order and arrived quickly. Nicely caramelized, they made a simple but tasty appetizer. For our mains we decided to try the Jerk Chicken (13.95) and the Beef Roti ($15.95), which is my friend's (who is a regular) favourite. Portions are definitely very generous here! The jerk chicken came with a side of rice and coleslaw and three large pieces of beautifully seasoned chicken. The chicken was tender and juicy with richly spiced skin, the rice had great depth of flavour, and the coleslaw provided the perfect creaminess to instantly cool your palate. I asked for a little of the scotch bonnet sauce to try, and I'm glad I did! With a hint of citrus, it added a nice kick. However, after trying both dishes, I can safely say the Beef Roti is my favourite: a perfectly balanced beef and potato curry packed inside a warm, buttery roti. Pretty amazing stuff. For dessert we decided to try sweet potato pudding ($6.95). The pudding was pretty good (heavily spiced with nutmeg and speckled with raisins), but I would have preferred if it was slightly sweeter and not quite as dense. Our lovely server brought us a complementary scoop of rum and raisin ice cream, which definitely added a lot to the dish! I know I'll be coming back to Simply Irie again and again.
Authentic Jamaican atmosphere; service and food were great; jerk chicken just like in Jamaica. First time there and will definitely go back when we are in Calgary.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Irie place mon! When I'm missing Jamaica this is my go to place. Eat in or take out, both are good options...yes you may wait about 15-20 minutes for certain dishes, especially seafood, but.... DON'T PPL WANT FRESHLY COOKED FOOD?!? I DO!! prices are up there but it's good quality, tastes like it does in j.a, mostly healthy/natural and they have many options! There are a few other places in the city to get authentic Jamaican food but I drive by all of them, way from the north end of the city, to get food here. Food is amazing, the staff is sweet, and the guys working there are cute!! Mi luv di place baaad!! 😀
Great spot!! Location leaves something to be desired, but the food is always on point. Traditional beverages and a relaxed atmosphere just add to it. Service is fantastic and friendly - feels more like visiting a home than a food spot. Don't let the appearance put you off, the traditional Caribbean cuisine is A+. Save room for the carrot cake, too!
The Jerk chicken is really good! Very tender and juicy with a just right amount of spicy heat. I will definitely be back to try some other items that they were out of when we were there.
This place is amazing! The jerk chicken is fresh and tender and the coleslaw is to die for. Been here a couple of times and its been consistent. The owner is super warm and friendly. Can't wait to go back. Highly recommended
Love this spot. Location is odd but they are friendly, relaxed and welcoming. The patties are alright maybe a tad dry, but the oxtail (typical Jamaican) is great with a side of coleslaw and a peas and rice side too with potatoes. For $15 it's great value and there aren't a lot of Jamaican spots in yyc.
I'm so happy I finally went! The jerk chicken pizza is INCREDIBLE and the curry chicken dish is sublime. I had a malibu rum and mango slush drink which was also delicious. No complaints. Super impressed with the taste of the food and the service was aliright too. The guys have great smiles! Can't wait to try more. Totally thought the prices were reasonable for the portions as well.
I've tried several things at Simply Irie but it took the last two visits to find the sweet spot and it's absolutely fantastic: It's the beef roti. I'd had goat and boneless chicken as well and some other things that I'm not recalling right now, but nothing that had really slayed me, and as others have noted, the prices are high relative to what you'd find for West Indian in, say, Toronto. All that said, the beef roti is worth the price- it's worth a drive across town. Perfectly spicy with a rich curry broth, ample tender beef and the most perfectly cooked potatoes in a nice tender roti shell. It's also massive, a fact that reduced the $15 price shock considerably.
Located in downtown Calgary, Simply Irie is a pleasant little restaurant that brings a taste of vibrant Caribbean culture to Alberta. From the bright white and yellow interior, to their friendly staff, right of the bat you’ll notice how welcoming the restaurant is. The atmosphere inside is really great, although, I do wish they played more Caribbean music! Their menu is also rather large compared to other Caribbean restaurants I’ve visited in North America.
To start, my friends and I tried the Jamaican Patty and the Chicken Roti. I really enjoyed the Jamaican Patty actually, it was a little different compared to the more common yellow patties. The Chicken roti was not bad as well, the curry flavour was great.
For entrees, we ordered the large Oxtail and large Jerk Chicken Platters. Both plates were huge, tasty, and cooked to perfection. The oxtail was beyond tender, and the jerk chicken was moist. My only problem was that I just felt like in both the oxtail and jerk chicken, they used way too much browning. I found that the gravy/sauce in both dishes were rather sweet and not as savoury or spicy as most other oxtail and jerk chicken dishes I have tried. The rice and peas was delicious, but I even felt like the overly sweet gravy took away from the flavour of the rice. It’s by no means horrible, but it’s not my preferred flavour profile.
Another thing to note is that there food takes a little while to be prepared. I’ve actually dined in and grabbed take out from them, and on both occasions I felt like the food took longer than expected.
Overall, considering it’s tough to find great Caribbean cuisine in western Canada — I would still totally check Simply Irie to explore more of their menu and enjoy a taste of the tropical islands. 🏝
This Jamaican food was delicious. Size and price are fair. The music, colours, and everything there make you feel you are in Jamaica. Servers are friendly and the place is clean. They have many options to choose from and I will definitely will go back.
Sorry for the half-eaten food, I was really hungary before I took these photos.
My fiancee and I came here for lunch on Sunday, and we were craving for soup and decided to order their chicken soup. It was really hearty and you can tell that its made from scratch and has great depth of flavour.
One thing to comment is that the music is a little bit loud. It rumbles your brain as you are trying to eat... so maybe they can turn it down a bit!
Overall a great experience!
listen. Ox tail as odd as it seems, you GOTTA try it. the fact they got sided of sweet fried plantains just hits so close to home and they got great drink choices.
Mango slush 🤤
Visited from Toronto and ordered with my sister, hubby and nephew. We were impressed for a few reasons (in no particular order)
1. The service was amazing! They were friendly, courteous and we had a good banter with the owner/manager. Perhaps the best service I've seen at a Jamaican restaurant. 5 stars for excellent service.
2. Very nice patio for outdoor dining. The restaurant was clean and very inviting.
3. Very good/wide selection of patties!! There's the regular beef etc but there's also ackee and saltfish and a beyond meat patty for vegetarians. They were all delish!
3. The food was tasty and the serving size was good. We ordered escovitch fish, oxtail, jerk chicken and jerk wings, beef, ackee and saltfish and beyond meat patties. Oooh, side plantains of fried breadfruit is a winner!
The only downside is that the meals and patties were a bit pricey. Oxtail runs you a cool $23. Perhaps this is the norm for Calgary. Outside of the price it was an overall great experience. I would visit again!
I went there yesterday. I ordered the Tofu Curry dish and it was super excellent. I got almost three meals out of it! My partner had the jerk chicken meal and he said it was amazing! The lovely young lady at the counter was....lovely! The food was fresh, the place is super clean and has a great vibe! Thank you Simply Irie, I will be back!
First time going to simply Irie and wow what an experience. We sat outside in the patio which was such a delight. The staff from the moment we arrived to the moment we left Never skipped a beat in making our experience such an enjoyable one. Management came outside to ask if we needed the heaters on as it was a bit chilly and that blew us with hotel much they cared about there customers. The food was so great and fresh we ended up trying different dishes and carrying home a lot as well. Perfectly centred with their location downtown and be sure to visit and experience the food and the culture of the Caribbean.
