Review Vic's Hong Kong Style Cafe - Calgary

Great friendly service (chinese standard) and a good extensive menu for your typical "fast food" like hk food. Brekafast here goes for 6.25-7.50 including a hot drink. Meals are approx $11-14 and comes with soup and hot drink. The HK style coffee is decent here and prob best within yyc at least. Would not describe it as most amazing hk style food but it hits the spot and especially with the fact yyc doesnt have much asian food options esp in chinatown.

Vic's is our go-to eatery for casual Chinese food. The service is prompt, the food is fresh, well prepared and always delicious. Their dinner special comes with soup, entree, a hot or cold drink, and a dessert (tapioca). The restaurant/cafe is on the second floor, overlooking Centre Street. Nothing fancy, just delicious Chinese "fast" food.

HK style food.. always comforting to eat here with friends for lunch. Always ordered their 2 type of meat with rice.. Homemade BBQ pork is full of flavor and goodness.

My favorite spot in town for BBQ pork, little tip be there right at 11am for an early lunch they usually bring the pork out from the kitchen at 11am and its great really enjoy this place for a weekend lunch. To be honest i haven't tried most things on the menu, can't help but order the bbq pork.

I would give 4.5 stars for my stir fry beef noodles but bf ordered a pork chop with onion sauce and they gave him a spicy fried pork chop rice with onion instead. We were speechless but we were too tired to say anything after a long ride from Kelowna

Really friendly service, good price and incredible food. The bbq was a must get and the portions where huge. Will definitely be coming back.

Worth a trip out to Chinatown. I got the BBQ combination, and it came with soup and a drink. It felt like I was eating in Hong Kong. Food was delicious and full of flavour. They also offered a breakfast special from 10-11 am. If you enjoy my reviews, please check out my YouTube food channel!

Food came fast. Food was good. Although the "crispy" roast pork wasn't crispy at all.

The food here was very good. Tasty and hot. We all agreed that we’d come back here again!!
I tried the wonton noodle soup here. It was cheap. 7.50, had cabbage vegetables, noodles, and some nice sized wontons with shrimp. Pretty hearty meal that was easy on the wallet.

I was there and got a lunch box today (roast duck and bbq pork with veg and rice), I went there because Wai Kee BBQ is closed on Tuesdays but I am craving for roast duck. I think their food quality was below average, and their sauce is nearly tasteless which makes the white rice tasteless. Price is relatively high, as Wai Kee charges for $9 while they charge $12.60. Quantity was relatively less, it's not a concern for me but it may be for some gentlemen.

We have been ordering take out from Vic's at least twice per month. We usually order the rice box from Vic's ( BBQ meat combination with rice and some vege). The quality of the meat is inconsistence. It really depends on the day you go, sometimes is good sometime is just soso. And we also realize that instead of take out if you have the same dish in the restaurant. The "having here" dish seems to have a better quality than take out. Anyway, this is a typical Cantonese Café style restaurant in Chinatown. Standard service.

Went to Vic’s for lunch. It is a typical Hong Kong diner with a BBQ stand at the side – nothing like efficiency.

We ordered the Roast Duck Noodle Soup and Beef Brisket Noodle Soup. You have the option of selecting what type of noodles you would like (additional charges may apply). The roast duck noodle soup was delicious (should have known with the BBQ station inside the restaurant) while the beef brisket noodle soup was average.

Service is standard for a Chinese restaurant (not particularly friendly or customer service oriented). There’s also a high probability of “table sharing” with strangers due to the limited space inside –designating all tables in the middle of the restaurant “communal”.

The meal came to $21 after tax.

My buddy Office Dad told me the owner of Vic’s HK hired David Lo, a chef from Vancouver. According to Office Dad, it’s hard to convince a chef to move from Vancouver to Calgary. There isn’t much of an Asian community in Calgary compared to Vancouver and the weather is too cold for many Asian expats. For this post I’m going to play Paper Planes by M.I.A. because this song came out about the time I moved to Calgary and I’m trying to relate to Chef Lo.

Happened to be passing through Chinatown today and the lady and I were hungry. Let's try a new place she said , how about this place she said. Never again.

We came in and ordered chicken and barbecue pork on rice which was good. But our Chinese soup had a fly in it that upon bringing to the server's attention , she tried to destroy it with the spoon so that it looks like pepper. Her response after was I don't see a fly what fly.

Good thing I took a picture and I'm attaching it to this review. She ended up bringing me an alternate soup however which had a lot of pepper so I had a harder time trying to sift through to see if it was flies or grains of pepper.

We also had beef noodle soup which there was a hair in.

Two for two with red flags here.

Sent it back to the kitchen and they clearly made a fresh dish for us so we think. I've also taken a picture and attached it in this review.

Here's where the major failure happened. The server could have come and talk to us and said that she was going to do something special considering we had two major problems arise from our first visit. She at this point just went on like business as usual and ignored us from this point on. Burn.

Now it's more like being in the middle of a Vietnamese nails salon where the staff are talking in Vietnamese about the customers.

I would have actually rated this place a zero , but the barbecue pork is actually good and the manager who rang us in was polite. Though he did pretend like he didn't know there was a problem.

We almost had to pay full price until I asked him if he was going to do anything about the bill because of that incident.

His response was let me give you 10% off and a free drink to take on the road. Wasn't too happy about this but at this point at least the visit is over. Highly doubt I'll ever come back. At 15%-20% i might have not uploaded the pictures. But a good place that cares about their service would have removed the effected items from the bill.

Came here on a Sunday afternoon as I was recovering from a hangover and the girlfriend and I were craving soup. We ordered the egg drop, hot and sour soup, alongside two types of BBQ meat (Roasted pork and soy chicken)

The egg drop soup was watery and girlfriend and I did not like the addition of the water chestnuts as it gave an odd texture to the soup. (imagine the texture of a pear in your soup)

The hot and sour soup was well made, very flavorful and filling. Right amount of sourness and spicy. I would definitely come back for this soup.

The roast duck was crispy and tender, soy chicken was soft and flavourful. My only complaint is that I felt the dish to be expensive for the amount of meat received. (13.95)

Service was average. What you would expect from an Asian restaurant.

This is probably the best service I get from a Chinese restaurant! The servers are very nice and efficient. I have yet to encounter a rude server that I would usually at other Chinese restaurants. They have an extensive menu with huge portions for a decent price! They also have good BBQ, which is their specialty. I love getting their BBQ pork and BBQ duck that they sometimes run out of come evening.

The BBQ pork here is probably the best in town. Succulent, flavorful and tender. If you have $10 to spend on a lunch this is the place to be. Their takeout combo has extremely generous portions.

Gone are the days of Happy Valley. It was replaced with Vics or should I say Sicks. That is what happened when we ate some prawns. Sick .. sick sick. I have avoided it since the opening but a work friend picked this for dinner .. Good lord anyone that says this is good food must like mall food. Zero customer service, everything took forever, and it was greasy and salty. How is this place still open?

Every time I go there, I order the BBQ Duck Noodle Soup and HK Milk Tea/Coffee. Their food never fails to disappoint, reminds me of the Chinatown in Victoria that I grew up in. Service is quick and prompt, none of that "coming-by-your-table-while-mouth-is-full" and I like it that way. Lunch time is super busy but you'll find a table quickly. If you like food at a reasonable price, great portions, and bbq meat then this is the place to go!

I came here for lunch with some friends. It gets very busy during lunch time. The food came out pretty slow. There was only one person working. Food is pretty good. Very greasy though.

Cheap Chinese breakfasts. For $15 we had 2 set breakfasts including a drink each, a noodle soup, egg and hot dog sandwich. What a steal! They also have BBQ duck, pork and etc.

Good food at an affordable price!! It can get really busy so if you are planning to have lunch or dinner, make sure to get there earlier. The staff is very friendly and the environment of the place is good for groups of 2-6 people. Their duck and BBQ pork is amazing!! A definitely must try out food!!!

Come up the stairs, and you can either sit in, or just walk to the left to the BBQ station to get your BBQ rice box take out order. Small restaurant, decent service with a relatively fast turnover. Breakfast is good value, if you can wait till they open at 10 am. Whatever you're craving, get a hot HK Style Milk Tea with it and put a teaspoon or two of sugar to get the authentic HK cafe experience.

Great wonton soup. I love the idea of a Hong Kong cafe. Probably the most interesting fusion that I have ever seen and I cant believe it took me this long to try it. Lots of items I will return to try. The wonton with extra noodle was amazing for a lighter lunch.

45 minute wait. Thanks viva for making me wait 45 minutes on a simple rice order. Won't be coming back

Average at best. After hearing bad review from many Asian (including Hongkongese) friends, I wanted to try it for myself. I went with a friend, ordered 2 dishes and 2 drinks. The cold milk tea was not bad. Satay beef stir-fry noodle was not bad either. The real test was the baked pork chop with rice and it failed miserably. The tomato based sauce was very bland. The supposedly baked dish was not really baked. No melted cheese on top which means it is not the true Hong Kong style. Service is so-so. Overall, it is not awful, but it is not a good Hong Kong style cafe. Calgary Court in the next block is the real deal.

Would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Ordered wonton soup and the pork was raw !!! The beef noodle dish was tasteless and mushy. When I told the what seemed to be the owner/manager about the food he argued about the food being perfectly cooked. Do your stomach and wallet a favor and avoid this place

We just had lunch here. The food and service was the best I've had in Chinatown. We'll be back.

Never again. I ordered Fish fillet congee. It was too salty and disgusting to eat. That was NOT what I used to get from other HK style restaurant. I only had three spoons and I stopped eatting. My fiance didnt like his curry too. He said it was under average curry he ever had..
NEVER GO BACK.

I've tried their wanton soup in the past and enjoyed it. So I assumed they were authentic HongKong style. So I took my entire family there for dinner this was after their reno. The staff was different so we ordered. Boy was I ever disappointed and embarassed to my kids. Rude as ever staff . Bad service and the food wss either too salty or too sweet,

Real HK Style Cantonese Food!. I really like their Cantonese dishes, such as the black bean beef fried ho fan, BBQ duck & noodles and beef flank noodle soup. So delicious! I have been there three times since the name change from Happy Valley and it still tastes good to me. For a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown, the service is actually not bad. The waitresses are very busy and are expected to look after a lot of tables, so as long as you can get their attention, they will help you. One note of caution though - I've ordered the BBQ meat takeout many times and it looks better than it tastes.

VERY Disappointed. The soup was overly salted. We ordered a Portuguese style baked chicken with rice, the sauce just tasted like a curry sauce and the chicken was burnt. The roasted BBQ pork belly was bland and not crispy. Service was acceptable. The quality of the food is needed to be improved in order to stay in business.

Overall experienced you'll get what you pay for the price. Nothing fancy, but the services was good despite how full packed the restaurant with customer, they served the food fast and the staff attended to ur needs fast, and the food tasted good. Not salty nor too spicy.
The roasted pork is good pair it with plain rice...

I really enjoy simple Hong Kong style breakfasts and lunches and Vic’s Hong Kong Style BBQ & Cafe is in the old location of Happy Valley Restaurant, which is on the top floor of this building. They have newly renovated the place so it looks simple, masculine and clean actually! It’s very comfortable and you still get the Hong Kong style ambiance. This visit, we went quite late for breakfast and yet too early for lunch… so we just ordered whatever we felt like. I ordered one of my favorites which is with preserved vegetables (zha choy) with pork in rice vermicelli! I have always loved this dish and I ordered it – and loved it! My husband ordered what he loves most – which was stuff from the BBQ, where he picked roasted duck with roasted pork belly over rice. It’s normally called a 2-item combo from here. The BBQ wasn’t the best but its’ always a delicious treat to have anything from the Chinese BBQ! Overall, he inahaled his dish as I inhaled my bowl. We loved it! We have actually been b
