A little slice of yesteryear...always comforting in bad times and the good.
Order some all day breakfast, put a twoonie in the Juke Box, and listen to Corb Lund while the rest of the world melts away.
The pork chop dinner is a fave...and breakfast is great all the time.
Love the HOME STYLE cooked meals, BIG portions... and impeccable friendly service , friendly place to come everyone is so nice .The juke box at the tables brings back memories from my childhood ! Would highly recommend and very affordable! Sunday Brunch ? this is the place you want to be! Jerry is so friendly :)
Stopped in today to try out this famous Flapper Pie I heard about. I bought the whole pie to take home with me. It was huge, mile high angel food merengue, and homemade in house. The pie was well worth $18. Thank you Blackfoot Diner for my first ever Flapper Pie experience. I’ll be back again; but next time I’ll be bringing home your strawberry rhubarb pie as well! OMG (drool).
Awesome staff, awesome food. A must for every meal: Fries and Gravy.
Best part of it all, they are open 24 hours!
Fries weren't the greatest but the place looks super cool. People were friendly and the eggs were like eating fluffy clouds! We will defo be back
I love the old school, dated look. The music had me singing along, and my waitress had me laughing. She was so cool. The food was great and my kids enjoyed the train when they saw it rolling around the restaurant. A great experience all around in my eyes. No "hoity toity" nonsense. Just great comfort food, real service, and a great experience for me, my friend, and my kids. One of my favorite places to go in Calgary.
We have introduced a lot of our friends to this place and they all love it, we have also met some friends there that we hadn't seen in awhile. We eat here quite often now that we have moved to Calgary...Great place...Great staff!
The meal and service was excellent, I will be going back soon, and would recommend this business to anyone!
Staff are friendly and food is 100% homemade fresh and delicious.
Can't really go wrong with a diner that's been around forever. And the decor has not changed which is what I love! It's busy and it's quick, it's clean and the staff is friendly. Will be coming back for lunch
This place is amazing. It’s open 24 hours and has a phenomenal homeyness to it. There is a woman named Helen who works there and she is an absolute doll when we roll in every Saturday in our ridiculous outfits (just me not my companions. I like dark lips and corsets.)
This place has classic, no nonsense, good food and the people who work there are awesome. There’s also a fancy dragon in a train that makes its rounds above which is awesome. We come there after a night of no good, and are always warmly welcomed and attended to.
I mean sure, there’s been a resurgence of greasy spoons as uber popular with the public, and anyone with eyes can see Calgary is a brunch mecca as people stand in lines for quite some time just to dine on potato pancakes and fancy eggs – but the good ol’, line ’em up on stools, blue plate special style diners are a lost breed.
This is in my 'hood and my wheelhouse. Yeah, it's trucker food in the heart of the city. But think about that for a second, these guys are working people. They don't want junk food, just simple honest cooking. Yeah we got burgers and fries. Lots of eggs and bacon and mystery meat sausages. It ain't pretty and isn't supposed to be -- this town got soft on $100 oil and your flaky eggs benny with herbs and whatever you pay $30 for on Stephen Ave. This is a real deal. Here's what you didn't know -- these guys cook a whole turkey every single day. The hot turkey sandwich? You're not going to get anything like it in this city. Oh and they do pie. Like, real pie like you're not going to find outside grandma's.
Your basic diner with great deals and food. . . Always busy. Where else can 4 people eat for under $50 including tip for a huge breakfast. Great pies, try the Flapper of Mile High Lemon. . .both great choices.
Always a great place for a quick and delicious breakfast. The server's are always really sweet and the food is consistently delicious. I would definitely recommend this place.
Food: Really good burger.. You can taste the char. Most of the menu here is pretty decent.
Value: Great value! Prices are so cheap and portions are good.
Service: Friendly and what you would expect from a truckstop.
Ambiance: The atmosphere defines truckstop. It's old and run down, there's a miniature train that runs around the perimeter of the dining room, the severs all wear pink nursing scrubs, the jukebox plays old country. The plates, cups, and cutlery have been used for probably years and years.
How could you not love this classic diner?! It looks like something out of a movie with classics such as Johnny Cash playing on the jukebox in the background, a train that circles the perimeter of the restaurant, pink walls, and fridge full of pies, down to earth patrons, and the friendliest gals serving!! The food is great home cooked style and ultra cheap. Open 24hrs! ☀️🌙This place will always be a fixture in Calgary. #calgarydiner 🍰🍔🍳
If you live in Calgary and haven't been here, you're seriously missing out. This is a great little diner that serves good food, excellent pies and they always do it with a smile. We always talk about how we need to come here more because it is such a good experience.
This is a 24 hour diner great for breakfast or a meal after a long night of work or partying! Service is always great and the food is amazing wether you want eggs and hash browns or a good piece of steak!
Best diner in Calgary love the food big portions and cheap prices! The service is always best. Love coming here with the girls after a night out :)
This spot is classic. The price is right and the food is simple and tasty. A great brunch idea to take any parent, friend, aunt, grandparent, cousin or colleague. If nothing else you can discuss the train on the roof and the decor from 1992.
Best bread ever-tall, super soft, gorgeous. Great pork chops with crunchy fried exterior. Meringue pies with 4 inch tall meringue-crazy height. Below average decor, and horrible canned vegetables-unedible really.
I wish more places like this existed. It's a truck stop diner just on the edge of downtown, open 24 hours-decor is kitschy and fun, it's a family run place where the servers have been there forever. The service is quick and at times surly, but for some reason this adds to the charm of the truck stop. Don't expect fancy trappings, glazes, or "reductions"-come as you are, and have a solid breakfast any time of the day or night!
This place is exactly what a diner should be: old school and proud of it! Calgary is full of fantastic (but pricey!) upscale brunch joints, but when you want some stick-to-your-ribs, no-fuss-no-muss, all-day breakfast... Blackfoot Truckstop Diner is the way to go. It's the small town feel, the old jukebox, the sweet servers that call you "darlin'", and the great prices that will keep you thinking it's the 1950s. The all day breakfast with the mini farmers sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, toast and coffee are the perfect hangover cure -- or in my case, a post-camping meal. The endless hot coffee, and the deluxe cheeseburger and fries were tasty; and the dessert is not to be missed. The Flapper Pie was bigger than my head, and the warm cherry pie and soft serve ice cream were a great combo to finish a comfort meal. All of the above, plus soft drinks was under $30! #Winning. Blackfoot Truckstop Diner - a Calgary Institution around for the long haul! #punintended
One can never, ever go wrong with a good old-fashioned clubhouse at this place! This is a fantastic late-night, go-to (with lots of character) during Stampede!
Charming and Unpretentious, always a good meal.. Always my go to Breakfast (anytime of day or night) place. I love the Character and decor of this place, yes it is old, and outdated and that's why people love it. I love the waitresses too, The one I had today was very busy but was on top of it while dancing to the old tunes and having a good time. The food has never been disappointing. Nothing fancy at all... no fancy dishes or presentation, no trendy BS and that's how a diner should be! just regular cool people & good food at a good price.
I come here a lot with my bf. It's our go to spit to eat. Great staff and love the feel. Portions are very big for what you pay. Bring change for the juke box
Delightful diner. I have been coming to this diner since i was a kid, and i remember the toy train going by and the waitresses wearing those pink jumpsuits. The waitresses are great and the food is pretty good as well. Its a good place to have lunch.
I like my breakfast any time of the day at Blackfoot Diner. I usually have the #1 breakfast listed on the whiteboard-mini farmer sausage, 2 eggs, hashbrowns, 1 slice of toast (I always ask for whole wheat), and tea (my husband always gets the coffee). All the staff we meet there are wonderful, which is why we always come back. The pancakes are another favourite for me.
I love this place....and all the lovely ladies, thank you girls
The best "Greasy Spoon" in town. Awesome for late night eats after the pub!
Good food but "iffy" service. Finally decided to try the Blackfoot Diner after hearing the good word about this place.
To start off, the food was way better than I expected. I grew up on roadside/truckstop diners as I would drive all over Alberta (from Fort McMurray down to Calgary) for many decades. Portion size was great for the price and the food tasted wonderful. Had the daily special (roast pork with mashed potatoes gravy, peas, dessert, and appetizer of cream of tomato soup), and I have absolutely no complaints with the flavour at all.
Food was received in a short amount of time: appetizer came in about 5 minutes of ordering, and the entrée came within 20 minutes at most.
My only concern is with the service. When I first ordered, one of the waitresses took my order and when she dropped off my appetizer soup, she gave me the bill at the same time. Ouch... I was going to be ordering some extra items for dessert (I have a very, very healthy appetite) but when someone gives you the total bill before your entrée even arrives, I feel that I am not welcome. Restaurant was only half to two-thirds full so it was not like they needed my table immediately.
After the soup was served, I never could not get my original waitress back. Had to ask another waitress for help as some items from my special were never served (tea/coffee & dessert). Not sure if my first waitress was just ready to leave after her shift change -- and that may explain why my bill arrived with my appetizer?? -- but that means that any tip I left would be for the disappearing first waitress (her name was on the bill) despite the fact that the second waitress looked after me for the bulk of my meal. As I pay with credit card, I do wish I had some extra cash to have specifically left with the helpful waitress.
While the food is very tasty, the service can be quite spotty, depending on who you get to wait on you. And make sure that you get all items that are included with your meal/daily special, as you may have to constantly remind the wait staff about missing items.
This is what a diner should be.. This place is like walking into a time machine. The decor is old, the menu is old and the servers are old. Still it's a great place. Not at all pretentious, like some of the newer and overpriced "diners" in Calgary. Don't go there if you're in a rush as the service is usually slow. Most of the clientele look old and retired, so I don't think they're in a rush, and the same goes for the staff at the diner. The food is simple, plentiful and tasty. I'm a big fan of their beef dip, and pancakes (but not together, of course). The only thing I would avoid is the coffee, as it is very weak.
A funky hangout with good food. Before getting to the food, this place has loads of atmosphere. The biggest cross section of Calgarians I've ever seen in a restaurant. And the open floor design makes for interesting people watching. Feels like being at a giant family reunion, except you don't know anyone, in my case anyways. The waitresses are sweet, hard working dears. The food quantities are generous, very reasonably priced and good quality for the price. Coffee is okay but I'm very particular about my java. Oh ya, free parking. And lots of it. Try this YYC institution, at least once.
Great canadian diner. Blackfoot diner makes the best burgers. The atmosphere is also great, kinda 50s style.. try it out.
Good food!good service! Don't go here if you're NOT hungry. Had the western omelette and was stuffed after eating half, hashbrowns were very good but next time I will order them crispy like an earlier post said to do. All in all a good experience :)
Tired of breakfast lines?. If you don't want to wait in line and don't care if there isn't duck eggs benedict on the menu then this place is for you. Good home food: bacon, eggs, hashbrowns (ask for them crispy btw), pancakes and french toast. On top of all that, its cheap. $9.95 for the truckers breakfast is a steal and it is good. You won't find that at any of the trendy spots where you have to wait for 45 minutes just to get a seat. As for service, its awesome. The ladies working are often older and are complete sweethearts, plus they all dress in nurse scrubs, gotta love them. Only downside, the coffee is not the best, but you learn to love it! Give the Blackfoot a try, you'll have a good time.
Lastly I have only eaten breakfast here and that is what I recommend.
An institution. This is your basic unassuming diner at just about the best you can expect. Good portions. Staff that takes care of you. A good mix of food possibilities. I enjoyed my cabbage roll special which came with fresh-baked bread, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and a soup. The clam chowder was good. The veggies were obviously frozen, but hey....it's a diner. Price was definitely right.
Best home style breakfast
Hot turkey Sandwich. One of my favourite meals at the blackfoot diner is the hot turkey sandwich, which I have had on numerous occasions, never have I had coldcut turkey slices or powdered gravy. The turkey has always been the real thing. All other people that have reviewed the turkey there also boast of real turkey,
I dont kknow why "sushi lover" would have gotten something different? hmmmm
Very good service, cleanliness of restaurant and servers/bussers can be questionable. Food is mostly average, depends what you get. It’s nothing outstanding but the prices are very cheap and it hits the spot. It has an endearing atmosphere I quite like.
Definitely Diner-tastic. If you want a diner experience that is as close to authentic as possible, well, I think this is it. The food wasn't extra special, it came fast, with friendly service, tasted good but not out-of-this-world memorable, but I'll never forget the atmosphere. The waitress snapped her gum, wore pink polyester pants and was really friendly. There is a train that goes around above your head and nicknacks to check out if you get lost on your way to the "loo". It was fun.
Our place to go.... We eat here once a month, and my son (3 years old) loves it. Usually I get the special, and my son will have something from the kid's menu. I let him pick a few songs on the jukebox too, which he loves. We've never been disappointed in the food or the service.
Highly recommend for anyone who loves a good diner. This diner is definitely not anything fancy, and that's what I love about it. I visited this late one night (11:45-12:00AM) on a Thursday/Friday.
My friend and I just walked in, grabbed a seat and was immediately greeted by our nice waitress asking for drinks- which came in a flash! We ordered right away, and bam! She was gone to put in the order. The atmosphere was great, the little "God Bless America" sticker I saw made me smile, being from the US, it made me feel like being back home!
I ordered the Deluxe Cheeseburger and added on some mushrooms. Our order came quickly, hot and ready. The burger was pretty darn good for the price, with some tasty toppings of a big slice of tomato, lettuce, some relish and mustard. The french fries were great, not too crispy, nor too soggy, just perfect. My friend ordered just a poutine, which I tried, and it was good, too. Our waitress was quick, friendly and professional. Considering she was the only server on at that time, she was doing great. Kudos to her for keeping all those guests happy (there was quite a few).
This is why I love truckstop restaurants- good food and service, all for a great price. I'd definitely come back when I need my diner-food fix, hopefully to try one of their pies that everyone talks about.
Yum!. Great breakfast! Great everything!
Great atmosphere. Real comfort, greasy spoon type food here. Good shakes too. Tried the working man's breakfast, with vanilla milkshake, topped off with a banana cream pie. While nothing stood out as being spectacular, food was good for cheap dinner fare. Good portions, friendly staff and good prices for what your getting. Would recommend for those "gotta have some greasy eggs and bacon" type cravings.
Great food. Service at times can be so so but food always good.
Edna Taylor. I was deeply saddened to hear of Edna's passing. Three years ago I forgot my wallet at home (Saskatchewan) and Edna gave me credit on a meal which I promptly paid for on my next trip. When I became ill with a severe nose bleed, Edna summonded a regular customer to drive me to a medical clinic. I always enjoyed chatting with her and she willingly activated the over-head train in her restaraunt whenever I made the request of her. Her kitchen staff always gave my St. Bernard a treat from the kitchen when I was in Calgary. She was a wonderful surrogate mother and friend to so many of us She will be deeply missed. St. Peter needed a cafe operator in the heavenly portals so he called Edna home.
My deepest condolences to family and Edna's thousands of friends and loyal customers.
Mr. Wayne Bonney. I have eaten at the Blackfoot Truck Stop Diner for 54years now.
I love the Hot Turkey sandwich or just a cold turkey sandwich.
This to me is the best along with the Beef Dip of course.
I have never had a real bad experience there and the food has always been good.
Thanks Edna for the great food!
Good honest food and LOTS of it. I guess this is probably one of those places you'll either love or hate. I love it!
When you want a huge portion of home style cooking, at a bargain price, served by friendly waitresses, then this is the place to go. We visit the Blackfoot fairly regularly as it's near our home but have only ever had room for dessert once.. if that ever happens to you (unlikely!) I can recommend the banana cream pie!
It's a Truck Stop and Food Go!. Just go in, find a seat and order a dagon burger!
Make sure you have a toonie for the jukebox, there's one at every table. You will get three plays for one dollar and seven songs for two dollars.
I NEVER, EVER leave without hearing "I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO" by Tony Bennett and "HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY" by George Jones. The third song is always a random one depending on my mood. I sing along out loud and once even had an older couple get up and dance in the isle to the old George Jones tune. It actually brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.
If you have a sweet tooth, save room for their famous FLAPPER PIE!
They will cook anything to order and get it right, which is an amazing thing these days! Tell the ladies what you want and they will make sure that the cooks get your message.
Also, they do a fabulous job of wrapping your take out orders and don't skimp on portions.
I recommend:
1. EXTRA crispy onion rings
2. Cole slaw
3. ANY of their hamburger's
4. ANY of their cream pies. Coconut, chocolate, banana, also the lemon meringue and flapper pies...
Leave a good tip. Those girls are on their feeties and work hard to serve you well.
The Blackfoot Diner may SEEM rough around the edges but it is soft in the middle and filled with homey goodness.
Give it a whirl, on your way through town!
Good food at a great price. I recommend Thr Working Man breakfast. Tons of food! Coffee refills are frequent. Check it out if you ever feel like getting a hearty breakfast at a decent price and check out the table-mounted juke boxes for some cheap thrill entertainment.
Kiss My Grits!. Calgary's best "cultural" spot for breakfast since 1956! For those of you who remember a little sitcom called "Alice"the Blackfoot Diner is like stepping on to the set. The ladies serving you even wear pink jumpsuits and every jukebox has Johnny Cash tunes. I cannot tell you how good their homemade pies are or how greasy their giant burgers are but I can tell you that I have yet to add a quantity of syrup that cannot be sucked up by their pancakes....and I love every morsel of them. Look, I love the Avenue Diner (my favorite breakfast spot) but if I am hungover, feeling nasty and not wanting to shower before entering a public place there is no other place I'd rather get my groove back. How can you beat a place with a toy train rolling around the ceiling? Oh, and those pies do look DAMN good...even if Flo isn't the one serving you! Ph: Do they have one?
Right out of the '50s... with original staff. On one particular trip to Calgary I recently did, I stopped for breakfast at what seemed a very bustling little diner. On the outside, this diner is definately the definition of "dive" and was falling apart, but as my dad once wisely told me "When you're in a city you don't know too well, follow the locals, they KNOW where to eat". And boy do they ever.
Being 10 A.M. on a saturday, breakfast was in full swing and the pancakes were flying, though not literally. They were probably the third best pancakes I've ever eaten, right after my mother's and the ones my uncle made on my previous trip.
We heard about Blackfoot Truckstop Diner and it’s all thing that I like – right in the name! So, I knew I would have to make a stop here eventually! I ordered their daily special when I got there, their Mini Breakfast which included mini farmer sausage, 2 eggs, hashbrowns, 1 slice of toast and coffee! It was enough to fill me up as I arrived here half asleep! The food was pretty decent and it was like a truckstop more than a diner! My husband ordered the Corned Beef Hash which they used the sliced corned beef and their hashbronws were the potato chunks! Although it tasted delicious, it wasn’t the corned beef out of a can with shredded potatoes that he loves so much. He did eat the entire plate of food up which was typical! Just when we thought we were about to leave, something in the fridge caught my attention! It was Flapper Pie ! And, if you don’t know what it is, clearly you’re not from a small town from Canada! I was excited to order a slice and have my husband try it. It wasn’t the best one, but it was neat as it was kind of a taste of history! Overall, we did have a fun and memorable experience! The food and service was excellent, and this place is always opened as it’s 24hours! You can stop by anytime for food and it’s a clean place as well!
