Review Blue Vinny Diner - Calgary

Shannon Barbella
I fell in love with this place! It has a beautiful calm vibe. The staff was super friendly and attentive with our requests. Food is AMAZING, everything is so fresh and well done, food quantity per plate is perfect. I'm absolutely coming back if I ever visit Calgary again.

Come cross this unique diner while visiting Calgary this April. Right on stephan Ave, I came cross this diner one morning and decide to go in for a quick breakfast The service was very friendly, and the interior of the diner is cozy and relaxing. I ordered a blueberry pancake and the taste was exceptional. I have to say it's one of the best blueberry pancake I have ever had. Coffee was delicious as well. If you ever visit Calgary, be sure to check out this little gem in downtown ❣️ Thank you for the great breakfast

Walked in and immediately felt like I was back home in my small town. The atmosphere gives you cozy and welcoming nothing like the busy bustling atmosphere outside. The lady who greeted me was very pleasant giving me all the time I needed to figure out my order and explain anything I needed. The food was phenomenal. The waffles melted on my tongue and tasted of cinnamon with every bite. Definitely 10/10! And I wish I had gone every day I had been here! I will definitely remember this place for any other trips I make to the big city.

Nice little location just off Centre St & 8th Ave in the Downtown core; pleasant atmosphere with a vintage feel to it. Serving staff was attentive & polite; making sure that our water was topped up for our tea/ coffee. Food was delicious; with a great portion size for what was ordered & prices so it didn't feel unjustified All in all really enjoyed the experience & will be sure to go again in the near future

Great service, nice ladies who know their regulars. Food and pricing of food need work.... the carrot cake pancakes came in an order of two, with a pathetic amount of maple syrup and then when asked for more was charged for it, in principle, does not work. Was a hotel guest from around the corner and this seemed to be a good option. Will now know to walk a bit further to oeb.. I think this is where all other hotel guests come!

Great food and coffee. Wanted to try the coconut French toast but they were out. The service was a bit slow, they might need to hire more people.

Not really impressed with our first experience here. The service was extremely slow. 15 before getting our coffee (had to brew a new batch) and 30+ min for food. Not impressed. One chef in the back apparently, but this was a Sunday brunch. We expected to be in and out. Paying for our tabs was painfully slow too. The food was pretty good. Blueberry pancakes were alright. Small blueberries and the maple syrup serving size was borderline pathetic. (1tbsp). My brother didn’t enjoy his carrot cake pancakes either. Others enjoyed their scrambles. Tables were a little wobbly. Might try it again, but unlikely. Breakfast is supposed to be quick.

This diner is centrally located, had good service and has a nice decor/ambiance, but overall I did not enjoy my experience. Ordered the carrot cake pancakes with a side of fresh fruit and a two-egg breakfast with ham, bacon, hash browns and toast. The pancakes were decent, but the maple syrup for the pancakes was not real (Aunt Jemima or equivalent) which really ruined the meal, and the side of fruit was basically just a garnish. Four blueberries, one small strawberry and two small slices of pear. The egg was cooked incorrectly (asked for medium, but got over easy) and the ham was just generic sandwich meat. The hash browns were great, but when I had asked for mayo, I was given caesar salad dressing (??). They also included only a single slice of toast. This wasn’t exactly a cheap meal either. I don’t intend on returning.

The mediterranean breakfast tasted awful...But the service was good. Maybe their breakfast bowls would be better. It seemed like someone who didn't know how to cook spinach with eggs somehow threw it together.

I am a little surprised at the low rating of this place. I used to come here once or twice a month on my way to the university. I always get the breakfast bowl. The potatoes are uniquely cooked (maybe a pressure cooker then pan fried?) with nice spices. I agree with some of the other reviewers that say the ambience could use some work, but the service has always been great for me. Unfortunately, the owner takes some getting used to and comes off a little abrasive at first but I got to know him better and really enjoyed coming here. I need to go back and try other dishes though.

Very tasty breakfast food and extremely quick service. Reasonable prices as well. And this last sentence is just to hit 140 characters because I've said enough already.

I think this is the best Diner downtown, fast service great ambiance nice sand stone walls, the food is always up to fresh standards, I always go to the same, ordering the chicken pizza and prosseco.
Love it.

This Little Diner is a great place to have a business breakfast as it is fast and the food is delicious, the eggs benedict with salmon, fresh fruit and hash browns is the best. If you are doing lunch , the cabbage rolls and the french onion soup oven baked is the best soup hands down. I love the location in restaurant row steps from The Hyatt and Marriott
hotels.

I was tempted to get an eggs florentine as that had been my fave dish from the place that occupied the space before Blue Vinny, but I opted for the traditional eggs benny instead. The dish as well as the menu is pretty no frills with the usual classic breakfast offerings. I actually really liked the diced potato hash and the benny itself came with a very generous topping of hollandaise sauce. The eggs were medium poached perfectly and the ham was not overly salty as ham sometimes gets. Service was very friendly and prompt so no complaints there. My only issue is that the price is a little steep for what you're getting. With the extra bucks I would have expected food more creative or with more unusual ingredients compared to your standard breakfast fare. But if you're wandering down Stephen Ave looking a decent, non-fussy breakfast meal, you'll definitely get it here.

Bad service. Took way too long to get seated and took too long to receive our food with a morning reservation. Will not come back here again.

A really cute place, nice decor for a greasy spoon type place.
We both enjoyed our meals, pretty standard breakfast fare. Service was friendly, a bit slow because there was only one server on - but it was still a really pleasant experience and we'll go back the next time we're in town.

This is a little diner on Stephen Ave. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The food was pretty basic and the coffee was too bitter. The food itself was good, but you could have prepared it yourself at home. Overall, the food was good, but we've had better for the same price. There was no wait to get in here at 11am on Sunday though, so that was a bonus! The service here was good as well (maybe because it was quiet?). Our coffees were always full and the food came out quickly.
Amy Erickson
I enjoyed the breakfast bowl here, it had lots of flavor. It was a bit over priced for what I got though. It was around $15.00 just for the breakfast dish. Service was a bit slow, however I would come back if I was in town again.

Stopped in for lunch on a Friday. The lack of customers should have been enough of a warning. Every other establishment on Stephen Avenue was full....this place had two customers. We walked in and couldn't find anyone to seat us...someone finally appeared from the back. Cheap looking interior with uncomfortable chairs. Menu was very unimpressive. Waiter finally came over - we were asking questions about items on the menu - waiter was surly and not very accommodating. All factors combined, we left without ordering and won't be back.

Working downtown on a Saturday. Stopped in for a quick lunch. Ordered Frankfurters ( 2 foot-longs with hash browns).
Took 35 minutes for food to arrive, 10 minutes to eat and another 12 minutes at the counter trying to pay for the lunch-$14 before tip for 2 wieners and approximately 4 ounces of what appeared to be frozen cubed hash browns that had been warmed up on the grill.
One lady and a man waiting tables, and two line cooks in the kitchen. When i commented on the long delay the lady said "we are really backed up" I counted 12 customers total and we did not all arrive at once.
Bottom line (my opinion)-Not good food, high prices, very nice people working there but painfully obvious that they are in over their head. I wish the owners all the best but i have to say that i will not be back.
YYCFoodie
The breakfast/brunch is a good portion with fresh ingredients. However, I couldn't really find any complimenting flavours. It's typical breakfast you can make at home.

Stopped by for lunch on Monday during Stampede, and was sadly unimpressed. We were surprised that at peak lunch hour on Stephen Ave, with massive crowds out and about in the sunshine, there were four tables of guests at this restaurant - including those seated on the nice patio out front. Very quiet and not at all busy - but from the frazzle of the owner and staff you'd think they were sinking.

We were seated and served by a fellow who turned out to be the owner - and it was like he was gripped by some kind of panic. He didn't listen to much we had to say, misheard or misunderstood both our orders, would ask questions and literally walk away without stopping to listen to our answers - it was a bit surreal.

Other reviewers here have noted that this restaurant doesn't really "cook" much - we were seated inside and could see directly into the kitchen, and everything was out of a bag, bottle or box. When a restaurant would rather use store bought salad dressing, that says a lot to me. Fresh made tastes better and costs a lot less.

I don't know what kind of issues the owner was having with the kitchen, but he rushed in, grabbed our plates and started "assembling" our lunch himself, with the kitchen staff kind of awkwardly stepping back. He'd been all over the place, inside and out, handling all kinds of things, and he didn't wash his hands or put on gloves or anything. I'm not a huge germ freak or anything, but...come on.

Seems like the kind of place that has good intentions but is being run by someone who knows little or nothing about how a restaurant actually works. They'd do well to hire a manager who knows how to run a restaurant and actually prepare and cook real food.

Great food! Great times. I would strongly recommend:)

Average breakfast at best.. Had breakfast this morning at the Blue Vinny Diner. A very pleasant and chatty waitress but the manager was not a very warm guy. Snapping at the waitress and talking down to her. Food was average at best and not good value. Potatoes in the scramble were under done and cold. Poor presentation.. My chair was unstable and felt like it was going to come apart under me. Don't recommend.

Amazing Spot for Breakfast!. Very nice atmosphere, extremely clean and reasonable prices. The atmosphere was very cool. My coffee was always full, my water glass filled often and my plate of food enormous and delicious. I had a herb infused omelette with a side salad of fresh greens and fruit. The salad was crispy and fresh and full of delicious strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. My omelette was incredible. I can't describe it, you just have to go and try it. Very polite and attentive service. You could see the kitchen from where we sat and it was well-organized, clean, and full of 3 diligent and hard working cooks. Kudos to this place. I can't wait to go back.

Absolutely Amazing!. Stumbled upon Blue Vinny Diner while roaming downtown for a breakfast joint. The service, food, and prices were fantastic. I can't explain how tasty both our breakfasts were! Everything tasted very fresh. I also had a clear view of the kitchen, which appeared very clean and was being staffed by two very hardworking cooks.

Justin. I had a great breakfast at the Viinny today , and it was very full but they squeezed us in , I have to say no diner makes the hash as this place nicely spiced and a lot of it could not eat it all , eggs benny very nicely done , my partner just wanted to run into some celebrity as we did last year when we walked in and there was gorgeous Demi Moor & Kiefer Sutherland and Donald Sutherland , they were shooting a movie just outside of the city and they ate at this diner several times because the owners did not go crazy and phone all the news media in the City , I think that's cool , celebrities not always like a line up for autographs , we would defenetly recommend this ....(not pretentious little place )

Terrific Eggs Benedict. Excellent Eggs Benny!...ordered medium...perfect temperature each time...Hollandaise is perfect...best bennys in Calgary!
Rob from CR

Basic and Bland. Food is assembled more than cooked at the Blue Vinny. 1. Remove from bag/box/bottle/can; 2. Heat if necessary; 3.Arrange arrange on plate; 4. Carry to table.

They really should take the trouble to pick the rotten bits from the bagged lettuce before putting it on the plate.

As others have observed, the coffee is better left alone.
NotaSnob
Decent breakfast........terrible coffee.. We went here for breakfast after a long run and we were ravenous (so really anything could have tasted good). Food was tasty and not too greasy, but the coffee! Ohhhh the coffee. Mediocre drip coffee is what expect from a diner, and there is something that is great about mediocre, black drip coffee. The drip coffee at Blue Vinny tasted like burnt plastic. There that's it. It almost ruined my breakfast with its awful bitter/plastic taste. How is that possible at a diner? It doesn't take much to buy a basic coffee drip machine and some ok beans. Time to step it up Blue Vinny, you are located in the core of downtown Calgary next to some of the best coffee bars in the city, and yet you serve synthetic tasting black stuff. Too bad :(
Andrea
Very over priced. Hard to read the menu. And why do ny eggs have to be scrambled. What ever happened to " how would you like your eggs done?"
Sj_loney
Awesome little place. Visited Blue Vinny for the first time today, great atmosphere.
Super clean with enough space to actually enjoy yourself, tables weren't crammed next to each other like other places where you can hear the mundane conversations of the people next to you.
Food was prepared quickly and came out hot; no greasy eggs or over-buttered toast either. The bacon and sausage were cooked perfectly and weren't fatty or of low quality.
The owner happened to be there and approached tables to ensure his guests were happy and that the food exceeded expectations.
This diner is certainly a new favorite, great vibe altogether.

Food is super fast and really good! The staff is friendly and very efficient. Will definitely eat here again.

Healthy whole wheat egg Florentines. Not greasy. Healthy tasty food fresh generous quantity of fruit

I feel this is a hidden gem. For anyone visiting Calgary and staying in hotels, this is A great breakfast/brunch place and so close to the Marriott and Hyatt.

Fantastic Breakfast Spot!! The breakfast was awesome. Sausage was delicious! The food came out quick and hot and staff very friendly. I will definitely be back! I recommend this to everyone!

Given two shots. But not more than a decent diner. Maybe I was just pampered by the past inhabitants of the space: The Avenue Diner. The decor doesn't really accent the beautiful space they have have there. The server was really nice. The food alright. Their breakfast sausages are unpleasantly mealy with what feels like connective tissue.

First time there the food was pretty good. The second time it was just alright. That's it. I could cook better breakfast at home. If you are passing by and hungry, it is there. But I'd go only because it is the sole breakfast joint I can think of in that small vicinity of (eastside) downtown.

Introduced to Blue Vinny by a good friend this week! Awesome breakfast and very pleasant service. I'll be back with my wife!

Been in Calgary for 3 months and by far the best breakfast I've had. Maple sausage to die for homemade fresh herbed hash browns and hard to get eggs cooked perfectly.
James
I just moved to Calgary with my girlfriend, I'm a huge fan of eggs Benedict I stumbled across the blue vinny while walking downtown and they are the best breakfast spot in town!!
Alicia Spelay
Best Eggs Benedict. I decided I needed some food stat. I saw this place and I saw it was not too busy. I was seated immediately and was asked what I wanted to drink I asked for a coffee. She went and grabbed my coffee and asked me if I was ready to order and I was. I got the eggs my eggs Benedict. As I waited my coffee was refilled and was asked if I wanted some ketchup. About 2 minutes later I asked were the washroom was my waitress directed me. By the time I came back after washing my hands my food was there. It took them maybe 6 minutes to make my food. I was very impressed. My coffee was constantly full which was nice because I was very tired that morning. All the waiters and waitress's were very cheerful and were very pleasant to talk to. Will be coming again. I can not believe the low review..... Best eggs Benedict I have had since I was going to school for culinary arts.

I stopped in to the Blue Vinny for brunch with a friend of mine this week. It was fairly buisy, but I was shown to a table right a way. I ordered the Mac and cheese, while my friend ordered bacon and eggs, both meals were served hot, food was very flavourful, and served in a timely fashion! I have eaten here a few times, and have never been disappointed! If you are looking for a great meal, friendly service, and at a reasonably priced place, make sure to check this place out!

Not Good. Overpriced and average to the point where I could have made it better. Maybe breakfast is better, but lunch was seriously lacking. Not much of a selection. Ordered the perogy bowl and mac and cheese. Sent the Mac back as it was gritty and overcooked, perogy bowl was Cheemo (pretty sure) perogies with sourcream for $11. A glass of juice was $4 - a bit much. Service was OK. Would I go there again? No, not even to try the breakfast as lunch was so disappointing.

My friends and I had breakfast at the Blue Vinny recently. I had the Eggs Benedict and the breakfast bowl. The food was fresh, and had a great taste. The service was friendly and prompt, even when busy. I would highly recommend the Blue Vinny Diner for anyone who likes breakfast!

Slow. 90 mins for basic lunch. Ran out of key ingredient but didn't offer to adjust bill. Gritty spinach in salad. Go elsewhere.
Cailee
Overall: Good. Food was pretty good. The service was great.

The potatoes did tastd old, and as one other diner indicated the fruit side if more of a garnish than a fruit side.

The decor was stylish and quaint. However, if you want breakfast in the downtown core, do go to Cora's. Its busier and not as ecclectic but the food is better.

Saturday morning breakfast. The BEST eggs benny ever!!!!!

Too many good things to say; the staff was extremely welcoming and friendly, the food was excellent, and even the owner was saying hello! This place is LEGIT!

Good stuff. Great breakfast, Service, Food, Comfortable - Thank you!

Delicious food, great hollandaise sauce mmm but unless you eat like a bird it's not worth your dollar hahah

It's a pretty nice place to go for breakfast! Great food and nice service! It was great! I will go there sometime soon!

A wonderful experience. The food was so tasty. Everything is fresh. Made to order. All natural ingredients. Nothing is frozen or processed. The staff was so sweet. As well as the owner. He actually came and sat with us. Talked to us. Made sure everything was good. I recommend this wonderful diner to everyone. I will totally be going back here every time I go to Calgary. It's very hard to find good restaurants. And in so glad I found this restaurant.

Watered down coffee, watered down espresso, hollandaise was flavorless. The Czech waitress, however, put a smile on my face

One of the best breakfasts I've had. Great food, great service, Great atmosphere!

Not good.. Seriously how can anyone screw up breakfast?? I won't be back until there is something new in that spot., judging by how empty it was, I'm guessing it won't be long.

Great Spot!. I checked out the Blue Vinny diner for the first time two days ago and was very impressed. I`ve lived in Calgary for 5 years and have struggled to find a `go to`spot for breakfeast and can say that the Vinny will be where I go from now on. The lay out is very open and the decor is nice and it is very clean, the staff is friendly and most importantly the food is great! If you`re in the area definately check out the Vinny you won`t be disappointed.

Matt

I'll be back again. I stopped in this morning to grab some Waffles because I walk by every day and I was craving them. I ordered them to go, when I got into work, I sat down and enjoyed every last bite of it. I loved the service, they were so friendly and incredibly helpful. I look forward to returning one weekend to try more on the menu with a few friends.

Awful. I stopped in to try it out as every place on Stephen Ave was full (Stampede Week), and this place was empty. In fact the only people eating at the time were staff.......I should have known right then what to expect.

Service was good, but then again, we were the only customers..... I ordered the macaroni with bacon, and it was seriously the worst macaroni I've ever had I have no idea how they made it or screwed it up so badly.
My wife ordered the beef on a bun sandwich and it was pretty good, but didn't seem freshly made, more like some cooked beef with some sauce out a can. Won't be back.

So a co worker and I went down to the Blue Vinny while we were downtown one day working. What a great diner! The pretty girl at the front smiled and showed us to a table right a ways.

We checked out the menu, and I like how the classic eggs, bacon, sausage, hash looked, so got it on an impulse. Turned out awesome! Seasoned hash browns were great! The whole meal tasted fresh and there was no grease!

The meal arrived before we knew it! The service was great and they were friendly.

I highly recommend the Blue Vinny Diner!

Seriously, try the hash browns!

On the recommendation of a friend I tried the Blue Vinny a few weeks ago. I've been going 2x a week since!

The staff are excellent! Quick to seat you, helpful with recommendations and always smiling.

I've had the breakfast bowl, fresh ingredients, it was delicious! Served warm and quickly!

I'll be back for sure!

I highly recommend anyone who loves a great breakfast experience to try the Blue Vinny!

Service very slow Waited 50 minutes for lunch Not impressed :(

Not Blue at Blue Vinny. Great breakfast, the second most important meal behind Wine. Service, Food, Comfortable - Thank you!

Great Change!!!. The Blue Vinny is a must if you're in the area! Everything is so personal and the eggs benny is amazing!! I have had it the last three times I have been there and now I find that I crave it! It's warm and inviting and when you're looking for good food and a relaxing good experience I would have to say you're good to go with this place… I am a stickler that customer service can ruin the best food but here bot the food and service, I have found to nothing but great! It's a great change from the normal Perkins or Denny's that's for sure!

Vinny does not value his customers!. We recently dined at blue vinny's. we waited forever for our food and after about 25 minutes, our server came up to us to tell us that the owner's friends had come in and he had bumped our order in the kitchen so that his friends' food could get cooked first. she said we would have to wait for their order to be done and then ours would be next! terrible!!! what a way to de-value your customers!!! we will never go back! food was average and cold....do NOT recommend at all!
Gwh4746
Great Breakfast. I had one of my all time favorites - eggs florentine; and my friend had the pancakes. The meals and the service were excellent. Blue Vinny is a very relaxing and convenient place to meet for an early morning downtown breakfast meeting
Drobins3
Not Impressed with the service or the food.. If not for the good company of a friend, I would have considered this a waste of 75 minutes on a work morning. We were served by a waiter that had a hard time showing any character at all, our food was average but it seems we were a low priority for someone as it took us an hour to get our food. $29.90 for two coffees, 3 slices of French Toast and an omelet. The servings of fruit consisted of 4 grapes, 2 slices of orange and 2 small chunks of tasteless cantaloupe each. The Omelet was spongy like it had been steamed in the pan with too much water and, touted as being 'herb infused' offered only a clump of basil smack in the middle. Disappointed. Not even an apology for the wait and the diner was not that busy.

The Blue Vinny is great. I have eaten here a few times & the atmosphere & prices are great. Good food at reasonable prices downtown, can't beat that.

FINALLY!. Finally a healthy alternative to a "diner" in the downtown core! i have gone to the Blue Vinnie several times now since it's opened...every visit has been an awesome experience. Great personalized service and breakfast food that is delicious with a focus on healthy, hearty selections. Definitely a modern version of what today's Diners should be!
Lensprofessional
Fabulous!!!. I was walking by and noticed the Blue Vinnie was occupying the old Avenue Diner location. My wife and I tried their breakfast - she had the eggs bendict and I had one of their breaky bowls. I am extremely fussy when it comes to Hollandaise sauce, and it was probably the BEST I have ever tasted. The potatoes were tasty and had finely chopped onions in them to make it more interesting. Waitress seemed to be Eastern European with a slight accent and was attentive and extremely friendly. Will definitely go back when I can!
Corner Deuce
No thanks..... I think what people want from a diner these days are a cool, unique atmosphere and great greasy diner food with a modern flavor twist..

This place has neither. Boring, unexcitable, and average to bellow average food.

My ribeye steak and eggs were boring. The steak was overcooked, the hashbrowns were unseasoned and bland, the toast was thin as paper. I ordered a side of Bearnaise sauce. I was gross, most likely packaged.

Services was alright.....but it was completely dead in there when I went. The staff/owner manager was doing book keeping at the table close to me.

Won't be back and suspect this place will be another failed restaurant on Stephen Ave.

This was my third visit in as many weeks. The food had always been excellent, and the staff very friendly.

Great Breakfast. I have just spent the last four days in Calgary, staying a the Fairmont. Had breakfast in the Blue Vinny Diner on Thursday 3 November and was happy enough to return from the next three days. As an Australian with slightly different taste expectations (not really taken with 'nuked' strips of bacon for instance) I was impressed by the quality and serving sizes of the breakfasts. The Lattes (the closest I can get to an Australian 'Flat White') was also delicious. The wait staff were attentive, friendly and efficient. Congratulations.
UltraBaguette
The diner is empty, country music playing softly, the whir of something mechanical to my left. I asked for orange juice. A clang of ice and metal later and a freshly squeezed sunny d is sitting in front of me. I order, I order again. No, I asked for the breakfast bowl. Waitressing is an art. Here it is, my bowl of breakfast. It's pretty. And small. The first bite is disappointing, undercooked potato. The second bite is the same. But the third... Scrambled eggs and the most glorious hollandaise I've ever tasted. Creamy, rich, thick. I'll take your whole batch and swim in it, thank you. The service is skeevy, the place is empty and there is country music and a picture of Kramer staring down at me, but the hollidaise is delicious.

Fantastic!. Our office recently held a breakfast meeting at the Blue Vinny Diner, and I have to tell you it was "Fantastic". The food was phenomenal, the staff extremely pleasant and for a new restaurant they have created a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. A co-worker ordered the eggs benedict and I swear she licked her plate clean. Everyone was extremely pleased with their meals and are re-arranging their schedules to accommodate our next breakfast meeting. Congratulations on your new restaurant. I am very pleased to see a new reasonable option on 8th Avenue. Looking forward to trying this restaurant for lunch one day!

I knew as soon as I walked into the completely empty diner that we were in for a bit of a "basic" lunch and although mine hit the spot, a few of my co-workers were a bit disappointed.

I’d recommend checking out Blue Vinny if you’re in the neighbourhood. It’s a nice place to stop into for breakfast or lunch if you’re shopping or hanging out downtown. I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to go, but I ahd a good experience.

I enjoyed my perogies and I ate the entire thing! The bacon was nice and smoked and it was perfect, tasty and crunchy! The other item we ordered from the menu was the Vinny’s Breakfast which was 6oz of Rib Eye steak, 2 sunny side eggs with ha
