This is my favourite restaurant in Calgary. The flavours are amazing and the dishes can be served mild, medium, or hot. I like to get medium with hot sauce on the side because the hot sauce is delicious. Our server most times we go is a young man and he makes excellent recommendations and is not afraid to tell you if something doesn’t go as well together or if dishes are too similar and make alternate suggestions which I really appreciate. A must try in Calgary!
This place is my favourite place to go whenever I'm in Calgary - the staff practically know me by name. They have a great atmosphere and outstanding service. You can really feel the pride that comes from a family-run operation.
The food is spectacular and has subtle little enhancements like cucumber in the water to add that extra hint of refreshment. I'm a sucker for their mango chicken, but everything I've had here is top notch.
Considering the high quality of food and experience, the cost is *very* reasonable.
The only downside is that with such good food at such a low cost it's wise to get a reservation. The Himalayan is always in demand.
C and I had our annual birthday/Christmas dinner this year without L and it wasn’t the same without him. We swapped presents and everything! That being said, we did pick a great restaurant called The Himalayan on 17th Avenue and had a tasty (inexpensive) dinner, so we can’t complain!. Honestly, I was expecting the restaurant to be a little more rustic and the food to taste like something I’d never had before. But, alas, the food was filled with familiar tastes – naan bread, paneer, and lots of veggies in a tomato based curry sauce. If my eyes were closed I would have thought we were in an East Indian restaurant!
I enjoyed my dinner here very much. We had the Fish Tareko to start, which was delicious, bu the sauce was very spicy. Thankfully my years of travel to Beijing have bolstered my taste buds against spicy food. We shared a Butter Chicken as well as the Himalayan Grill with Lamb and Dal. To finish off, we shared the Mango Rice Pudding and the Himalayan Cake, which were both delicious.
Service was very good, and the price is very reasonable.
Phenomenal food, nice decor and friendly fast service ! We came on a Friday evening for a birthday and we were all pleasantly surprised and left feeling full (also thinking about what we will order next time we come!). We started with the pork mo:mo (dumping) very flavourful. Followed by 5 delicious entrees (I can’t remember the exact names): veggie, tofu, garlic chicken, lamb spinach and Chili paneer cheese. Yum yum yum ! We also had saffron rice, bread and the special coconut bread (loaded with sweet coconut). Highly recommend coming here and highly recommend ordering a little bit of everything ! We will be back.
We’ve been here multiple times & loved everything we’ve tried! Unique flavours as well as hints of Chinese & Indian cuisines. Beautiful restaurant & professional service. (5/5)
What an incredible surprise! (Didn’t know anything about this place - just drove by and saw it) Staff were extremely friendly and attentive, and the food was amazing! There were great options for spice lovers and non. I had the himalayan with lamb and the sauce was so tasty! Highly recommended!!!
Awesome Nepali restaurant! The atmosphere of the restaurant is great and very friendly service. Highly recommended the dal-bhat, a great sample of all the yummy goodness! I am definitely coming back and try out the rest of the menu!
Thoughtfully prepared food in a beautiful setting, but it didn't quite live up to the hype. We managed to snag a table by sheer luck in this impossibly busy restaurant, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation. The service here is incredible: warm, genuine, efficient, and attentive without hovering; the staff instantly make you feel at home and definitely make your meal very enjoyable. To start we tried the pork mo:mo dumplings ($7.95 for 6 pieces) - garlicky and with a nicely steamed exterior, but slightly bland. These are almost like soup dumplings since when you cut into them a pool of oil spills out. For our mains we tried the Chicken Himalayan Grill ($20, comes with daal), Machha ko Jhol ($16), and Chicken Chau Chau ($14.50). The Chau Chau was again very garlicky and quite oily. The himalayan grill came on a sizzling plate (bonus points for exciting presentation) and the meat itself was beautifully seasoned and meltingly tender. The daal it came with was creamy and slightly sweet. The Machha ko Jhol was definitely the highlight of the meal for me: buttery pieces of basa enrobed in a slightly sweet, faintly mustard-y sauce - I'd definitely recommend it! The mains (except the Chau Chau) all come with rice, bread, and a himalayan salad. The salad was really nice - tangy and creamy. The bread was similar to naan and was fluffy and buttery. For dessert we tried the coconut tapioca cake ($4). Sweet and with a cool bouncy texture, it was a nice end to the meal. I'd definitely give this place a visit if you haven't already!
Always a great place for not only food but atmosphere and service as well. So worth the trip, so what are you waiting for?! But make reservations...it’s generally very busy!
Nice decor, pleasant service, reasonable prices. It was packed when we were there, so better to make a reservation in advance. Pork dumplings are surprisingly tasty, different flavor from the Chinese, Korean or Japanese dumplings and quite juicy. Grilled lamb was nicely done and cottage cheese and spinach in creamy broth was a good choice to go with the bread or rice. Eggplant and fish as per photos are also very tasty. Will definitely go back sometimes.
I love this place! The restaurant is nice and atmosphere is fantastic. These come second only to how delicious everything is. EVERYTHING!
Great place to eat out with friends and the portions are certainly large enough for sharing.
Went here for a meal last night with friends. Not the easiest to get to from Airdrie but well worth the visit. We arrived at opening and were shown to our table, I would recommend booking as by 5.30pm the place was packed. Staff were amazing and the ambiance of the place fantastic. Ordered drinks, starters and mains which all arrived timely which considering the customer load was incredible. Food was fresh, tasty and hot. We took the advice from our server and ordered dishes ‘medium’ in spice level. Lamb was well cooked, chicken dishes were super tender, would recommend the fish tareko but be careful with the hot sauce! Many options available for gluten free.
The bill was not excessive and it included a bottle of wine, highly recommend this restaurant and we will definitely be back for another visit soon.
All food was excellent. Unfamiliar with the cuisine, staff were very helpful about ordering. Great prices but could've used a light tidy up in the seating area. Would recommend. Would go again.
Absolutely awesome food. Took friends from Toronto to try this place, all of us had such a great time. The service was good, and we didn't have to wait long for our food. We ordered their special lamb, fish, butter chicken, and a vegetable dish (can't remember the name). The size of the lambs were huge, and the seasoning was perfect, not too salty nor too light. I would recommend this place to everyone
Amazing... mouth watering butter chicken
The dal is just the "momz cooked dal"
Just the perfect blend of food and spices
Awesome ambience, amazing food n absolutely good service
After all these years we finally took in The Himalayan. We mad a reservation for early Tuesday evening (5:30 pm), and the restaurant was full (all reservations) in no time at all. And I must say I'm so glad we finally went to this lovely and delicious restaurant. It's located in a crappy little strip plaza, and the outside is nothing to write home about. But inside ... OMG, what a beautiful place! You would never know from the outside. What a delightful surprise. And the ambience is awesome. We were served by a very nice and polite young man who clearly knew his menu and the ingredients. Polite, friendly, and knowledgeable. A pleasure to be served by him.We started with a shared appetizer, the "Vegetable Mo:Mo"; 6 beautifully artistically created steamed dumplings filled with veggies, mozzarella cheese and herbs & spices. Absolutely delicious, with perfect texture, layered with flavours and delightfully light. Right away, I was more than happy.Linda had the "Mango Chicken Fruity", which is creamy mango, beautiful white chicken pieces, in a tomato and cashew nut sauce. She ordered it "medium" spiced. She loved it. I tried some and it was as nice as I have every tasted. Perhaps the best ever.I had the "Machha ko Johl", which is a nice light basa fish cooked a tomato, onion and mustard-based sauce. OMG, this was good! I've had this dish several times in Thai restaurants, but this Himalayan version beats them all. I was more than impressed by the layers of flavour, and how the sauce brought the fish to life. I ordered it "mild" spiced. I would definitely have it again. And again. These dishes came with saffron rice, which was perfectly done and worked very well. It also came with a Nepali Salad, which was really a different type of cold potato salad. I didn't think this worked as well, and thought the vinegar was a bit forward. However, everything else was so perfect, this did not affect my opinion overall; which is, You have to eat here! This is one of the finest restaurants in Calgary, without a doubt. We will definitely be back often to try the many other interesting items on their menu. And, yes, even the price was right. It's so delightful to see restaurants like this in Calgary.Service: 5/5. Presentation: 5/5. Ambience: 5/5. Portion Size: 5/5. Flavors: 5/5. Parking: 3/5. Value: 5/5.
Soooooo good. It'll be one of those meals where you're so full but can't stop eating, cause it's so delish. Definitely a must-try, then repeat as often as possible
I use to live across from the Himalayan and was one of the first customers. It is nice to see that Sanjay has grown his business into the amazing restaurant that it is today. When I asked what he recommended, he came across as passionate and gave me amazing advice. The restaurant used to have a very different vibe in the interior which I miss, but fortunately it managed to maintain its appeal. The owner makes you feel special by having short conversations with the patrons despite how busy the restaurant may be. I have tried everything on the menu over the years, and while I enjoyed all dishes, my favorite is the dal bhat because of the variety. The vegatarian version is just as good as the meat version.
Great service, ambiance, and delicious food! We came in on a Friday night without reservation but they found a spot for a limited time which was enough for us. Loved the food, it was tasty, and unusual. The deserts were especially good!
By far a gem in Calgary ! Some of the best and most authentic restaurants in the city. Once unknown this restaurant is always packed and with a line out the door year round.
My husband liked this restaurant more than I. We started with their dumplings which were tasty, but not spectacular. My husband had one of their grilled plates and I had a shrimp curry with naan bread. The curry was quite sweet and not what I was expecting. There was nothing in its description to indicate that it would be sweet. I ordered a medium spice and I could taste more sweetness than heat. My girlfriend loves this place and says that I should give it another try. I'll report back here if I have a different experience the next time.
Update (Dec 2018):
I came back again and the waiter did tell us that the creamy shrimp dish whose sauce is similar to their butter chicken is on the sweet side. He said that taking it at the medium spice level helps balance the sweetness. My friend ordered it at Medium ( as I had previously), and I still found it too sweet for my taste.
I ordered the lamb grill and my husband had the paneer grill. As we like spicy, we ordered it hot and really enjoyed the dishes. Their nan bread is delicious...light, and slightly chewy, and not overdone. To start we shared the pork dumplings which were excellent and their fish cake appetizer which were tasty. The sauce that cake with the fish cakes was quite spicy...even for us. I prefer the sauce that comes with the dumplings. If I ordered the fish cakes again, I'd ask if it could be served with the dumpling sauce. I would go back again and probably stick to the grilled items. If I tried another curry, I'd double check about it's sweetness.
The food is good. But the price doesn't match the amount of food I got. Services are just meh (no refill of waters even after I called waiters twice and put it in front of table corner). Wants to rush you out even though it was not busy.
Fantastic Food!
Food: Overall Outstanding! Highy recommend!
Several Nepalese dishes were top notch. Spice level adjustable. Variety veg and non veg dishes. Highly recommend the melt in your mouth fish dishes! May not be traditional Nepalese but wow!

We are exceptionally fortunate to have this restaurant in our neighbourhood.
Yum factor is VERY high!
Eat the Mango Fruity and Chatpat and DO NOT MISS Momo..salivating just thinking about it all.
A little pricey with kids (although they are totally kid friendly). Grab some adult friends and ENJOY!
Wow, just wow. This is not even fine dining, but should be considered as such. There are no words to describe the experience here, you just have to try it. Enough said, make resos cuz they're always full (rightfully so).
After the renovation, the decor and ambiance is definitely more lively and pleasant. Thought I've noticed that their portions are smaller. Flavours are still awesome, I enjoyed every dish we ordered. The servers are very helpful with the menus and helping you pick out the things you want. I loved the naan bread with all the different sauces!
I just moved to Calgary from Toronto and checking out the Cowtown food scene, and I am impressed! There are a few restaurants with food like Himalayan in TO, but none that rivals the quality and consistency of this place. I live and work in DT, and have gone out of my way to dine at Himalayan four times since moving here two months ago. This place is that good! My parents came to visit last weekend, and I took them here, they agreed that this place was top quality and unexpected for a small city like Calgary. Can't wait for my fifth visit, I await the mo mo's!!!
First an foremost, amazing customer service. I have not experienced better customer service anywhere else. I want to give this restaurant a higher rating, but I just didn't like the food very much. We ordered 2 plates that were recommended by the waiter who said they were the most popular dishes. My friend and I didn't 'love' the food but we thought it was decent. Nothing really stood out for us. If you come here during dinner hours don't even bother trying to park infront. You will most likely have park on the street beside the building. The place is cozy and the food came out quickly. If you're really into Indian/Nepalese food, this place is worth checking out.
This is one of the best restaurants to which I have been in years. While living in Toronto for 25 years, I was a big foodie for East Indian food, as well as frequenting a popular Nepalese restaurant in the Annex and a friend's, who had been a chef for Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Not only does the food at the Himalayan have an incredible depth of flavour yet not in the least bit heavy (we each had the Dal-Bhat), the service was informative, genuinely friendly, and attentive without request. One instantly feels welcome upon arrival. I also was introduced to a new Malbec wine, "The Trumpeter," which surpassed "Andeluna," my former favourite. The massala chai at the end with dessert was wonderfully spiced and simmered to that lovely, lightly creamy consistency, which I love. Suffice it to say, I was disappointed they opened at 5pm the following day, well-after we had to leave Calgary. A definite favourite now in town!!! Be sure to make a reservation as it is justly quite busy. (There is also ample, additional, inexpensive public parking across the street.)
I like the Himalayan! I think it's fairly unique to Calgary. Prices were reasonable. Will definitely return in the future! Need to open a second in a better location.
I received the best service I have ever had at a restaurant. It was prompt, warm, and polite. I felt very welcome at this restaurant even though my guest and I were unusually underdressed on this occasion. The cucumber-infused water is a nice touch. After the complimentary papadums with dips, we started with the pork momos. They were perfect, oozing with a light spiced juice when forked. I only wish there was more of the spicy sauce that accompanied them. We then had the spicy cottage cheese chilli, hot. I like that you can choose the level of spice. The cottage cheese was similar to paneer in texture, with a crisp sere on the outside. The chicken chau chau was like an earthy, hearty pad thai with beans and crunchy cabbage. A great meal!
One of my favorite places to go eat. Always consistent and very fresh! Momo's are amazing, same with the naan bread. Service is spectacular. Very down to earth and sincere. I've been here several times and will definitely be going back.
Finally tried this place as it is quite far from home. So glad we did. Everything was delicious and so many different flavours. Basically it's very similar to Indian food but 10 times better. Try anything, but definately get a side of their house hot sauce.
The Pretentious Food Snob

There are few places that I trust to consistently provide warm service, a welcoming atmosphere and delicious food.
The Himalayan is one of them.
The food here is amazing and the service is even better. Great flavours. The server waited on us very attentively and was engaging and thoughtful. They recognized that we had been here before and acknowledged it. Definitely going to be regulars! Keep up the great work!
Love the food, love the service, love the atmosphere.
Didn't make reservation, waited 30 mins for a table, so worth the wait.
Nepali cuisine?? What is this? take the best of Chinese and Indian food you have Himalayan. After a longer-than-necessary delay I finally made the trip out to visit this little restaurant nestled in an easy-to-miss strip mall. Parking is a pain but it'll be worth it. The food was so flavourful and perfectly cooked, no wonder it's got such raving reviews. The dumpling appetizer was a pleasant surprise and should be on everyone's table!
Great food, reasonable prices, and great service! Triple threat! We ordered the butter chicken, Himalayan lamb, and mango fruity shrimp. We shared all three among three of us. Only improvement is it was a bit sweet and not salty enough but still tasted decent. Comes with rice and naan type flatbread. The staff was amazing and very genuine. Even though it was quite busy, the food was fast and we didn't feel rushed to pay and leave which was nice :)
This place has been on my list for years. Finally made it. It was very good. Super busy but we squeezed in before the rush. You'll love this place if you love Indian curries. The pork dumplings were very flavorful. The platter was tasty. Right amount of heat I asked for. I like the fact you can get a taste of everything on one plate. The naan was amazing too. The service was casual friendly and informative. The place itself is modern, nice and very clean. A really nice spot. I want to head back
And try a few other dishes I saw come out.
The Yen had to head back to Vancouver. For her last supper in Cowtown, I wanted something close to my house, and something hot and filling to warm us from the cold weather. The Himalayan fit the bill. Based on our server’s recommendation, we ordered the Kathmadnu Vegetables ($14) Himalayan Eggplant ($14.50), Mango Fruity Shrimp ($16.50), and the Butter Chicken ($16.50). Our server said two dishes would do, but I wanted to take the leftovers for my husband, who was again, working late.

Absolutely fabulous! Been here twice and both times I was not disappointed and will definitely be back again. The wait staff was friendly and on the ball! The food is full of flavor and spices are incredible!
Elegant dining area with delicious Nepalese cuisine, modest in size but big in flavor and very gracious staff to accomodate you. Saturday lunch buffet is priced reasonably.
Great place!
My friends and I came here last night to try something new, everyone was extremely impressed with the restaurant.
The fish, mango rice pudding and Chai are some items on the menu I believe everyone should try.
The Chai tea can take some time to brew but is well worth it. It did take an extra 20 mins at the end of the meal to receive it, but the service there is so spectacular we did not mind waiting.
Will definitely return to try the rest their menu
Food was amazing.
Everything was perfect.
Was greeted as we came in and seated right away. Cucumber water was poured and a small complimentary appetizer was brought out. We ordered our meal, I ordered a house tap beer that was amazing.
Food was hot and delicious.
Good value, fantastic service, wonderful atmosphere.
Great place and awesome food! If you love lamb you need to try the lamb dishes there. I have been here twice now and it never disappoints. You most make reservations as it is always busy. If you need to add a seat last minute of your reservations, that will not happen. It is literally busy there, but most try too.
I have been here twice before and always enjoyed it. The ambience is calming and leads you to enjoy it even more. The foods are cooked perfectly and seasoned ideally without being overpowering. The combination of ambience and taste is what made this restaurant great to me
Really great food and amazing service. Only wish is that it was closer to me because it would totally be one of my favs. I would not hesitate to recommend to people. I would recommend making reservations if you want to avoid a wait as the place was extremely busy and seems like it would be most nights.
The parking lot is really weird here. I would just be very careful of other confused people parking in this uneven, bizarre parking lot.
The place looks like it is recently newly renovated. A small bar greets you as soon as you walk in past the doors. You can sit here and dine as well although it would not be ideal unless you are on your own. Lots more tables inside.
Our server was extremely friendly and helpful, asking if it was our first time there which it was. We asked for some recommendations and he pointed out the most popular appies, mains, etc.
They gave us a basket of chips (?) with some sauces that we munched on while waiting for our ordered food. We started off with the momos which are basically dumplings. Yummy! Definitely a good appetizer, good for sharing.
We had the Himalayan egg plant, spinach tarkari and a chicken dish that I can't remember the name of. I want to say the Himalayan but I don't see it with chicken as a meat option on the online menu so I could be wrong.
The mains are served with a side of saffron rice and chickpeas which we both liked. The mains are served in a little individual pot like dish so it's easy to place in the middle and share.
Everything we ordered was great. You can choose how spicy to get some of your dishes so we got the eggplant on the spicy side and it had a good kick. I've never had an eggplant dish with a texture or flavour like this one, it almost tasted like it was BBQed with a smokey flavour and a more firm texture unlike most eggplant dishes that are very mushy.
We had a cake-like dessert dish and a mango pudding and we surprisingly liked the cake dish a lot more. It was very chewy and coconut-y which I loved. Mango dessert wasn't what I expected, it had a lot of other flavours in it that reminded me of something like chai. Would not order if you are looking for a pure mango, extremely fruity dessert but if you are willing to try something different, you can go ahead with this dish!
Overall, I would definitely recommend this place and can't wait to go back next time I'm in the mood for asian food.
A "hole-in-the-wall" quality of food but in a nice atmosphere. Great flavours in the food. With a mixture of different ethnic cultures, they incorporate the Nepali cuisine very well. They clearly have lots of regulars as they knew the customers by name and what they usually order. Reservations are recommended as waits can be an hour if you're looking for a table. Food portions was perfect as it was just enough to fit some dessert.
The Himalayan is one of Calgary's most reputable restaurants, and with great reason! This local eatery has set a strong standard for itself, one that it has maintained and consistently met, year after year. Specializing in Nepalese food, the Himalayan offers a unique sensory experience as spices and herbs test your palate. We started with the pork dumplings, which had a rich flavour that was complimented with the natural juices of the meat and herbs. The butter chicken and noodle dishes were amazing as well, with a smooth consistency to the sauce, and a fantastic texture to the noodles, with a natural balance of spices and seasonings to complete each dish. This place has achieved a legendary stature, and is definitely well worthy of the title!
An amazing stop for meat lovers and vegetarians, The Himalayan has a very broad menu that people with restrictive diets will enjoy.
The Himalayan Grilled Lamb was very tender and juicy. A bit of the medium rare side, which is how I prefer it. Good grilled spiced flavour, and although there was an additional sauce, I thought it was satisfying enough on its own.
The Tofu Chau Chau noodles were also great with their nice firm texture and loaded with veggies and chopped tofu, another fantastic vegetable dish were the Vegetable Mo:Mo dumplings, stuffed with diced veggies and complimented by a mild spicy sauce.
The cottage cheese dishes are the highlight of the menu for me so far. Simple, but really well done, the cheese is firm to the point that it has the consistency of tofu. The Cottage Cheese Chili is loaded with bell peppers but has a nice coating that makes it almost hard like it's been candied. The Cottage Cheese and Peas is a nice thick creamy sauce that's flavourful and perfect to sop up with the flatbread.
For my first foray into Nepalese food I was quite impressed. Great influences of Indian and Chinese cuisine with a distinct flavour of its own, it's definitely a great experience. It's definitely a busy place, so be sure to make reservations. They were really apprehensive when they thought I was making reservations only a week in advance, but were relieved when it was an advance reservation.
Service was amazing. We went with regulars, so the staff treated us well, joking around with us, making recommendations and gauging if we were ordering too much food.
I highly recommend this place for unique cuisine, a flexible and tasty menu, and a great dining experience.
This was our first visit to The Himalayan, with friends visiting from out of town. We most certainly will be back to introduce more friends to the great food.
The outside is inconspicuous, with a small "open" sign. Don't be turned away as the dining room is inviting and cosy. Recommend making a booking.
The service was friendly and attentive from when we arrived until the end of the night.
We started with chicken and pork Mo Mo dumplings, which were home made, flavoursome and well cooked.
We had a selection of curries. It is great to be able to select your meat or seafood all at the same price, and select the heat to suit your taste.
The curries include rice, naan and a refreshing Nepali side, which makes it great value! Plenty of choice, and all meals were loved.
5 out of 5 for this little gem!
I've been waiting to try this restaurant for a while now and finally came the other night. It gets very busy so call a day or 2 in advance for reservations. The servers were very friendly and explained everything about the menu or any questions we had. The food was flavourful and not too spicy if you choose mild. The fish appetizer was really tasty! I ordered the dal baht which I didn't think was amazing but my boyfriend had the grilled lamb and it was delicious!
Our first time visiting and certainly not our last. From start to finish, a fantastic dining experience. LOVE this place!!!
The bf and I made reservations for 8pm on a Saturday night, highly recommend making a reso because this place was packed! We were warmly greeted and promptly sat at our table. From the second we walked in the door the smell of the restaurant was intoxicating. We already knew our meals would be delicious.
We were asked if we had been to the restaurant before and were told by our greeter that if we had any questions we could ask our server and he would be happy to help. We were already being treated like gold! So nice! The excellent service didn't stop there. When our server came we ordered drinks and he promptly returned with our drinks and a little snack to start. Nepali chick pea bread with two dipping sauces, one ginger (sweet and spicy) on yogurt (tangy and mild). The yogurt dip was OUT OF THIS WORLD delicious. I licked the serving dish clean. The ginger dip was also very good but the yogurt was the star.
We ordered the pork momo dumplings to start, the bf ordered the chicken grill mild and I ordered the mango fruity shrimp mild. Wow! Wow! Wow! The flavours, my goodness. Our pork momo dumplings (6) were served with a delicious tomato sauce for dipping. We devoured the dumplings and eagerly awaited our mains. Definitely getting these dumplings again!
The dishes came with perfectly cooked rice, a potato and green pea salad (with nepali spices, yum!) and a basket of grilled bread. The chicken grill also came with a lentil soup. The server mentioned that the grill having no sauce needs a little moisture to enjoy in the best way, so it is to be eaten with the lentil soup to help wash it down. That is not to say the chicken was dry, it wasn't, it was also cooked perfectly. The dish just doesn't come with a sauce as many of the other mains do. The bf loved the chicken grill, though when he tried my mango fruity dish, he continued to dip his chicken in it, it was THAT GOOD!!! :D The mango fruity sauce was so flavourful and amazing as I write this I want it again RIGHT NOW!!! I am a bit sensitive to spice so I ordered it mild, but I'd go for medium next time as it was not spicy at all. Not lacking in flavour though, it was unreal delicious. But would be great with spice also.
We ate everything. Not a piece of food left on either of our plates. We were stuffed, but could not resist when we saw the dessert menu. We both got chyia (unsweetened chai tea served with sugar so you can adjust to taste) and the cassava coconut cake. We also really wanted to try the mango rice pudding, it looked amazing, we will get it next time. There was also a clotted cream pistachio dish that looked incredible. So many excellent choices. The chiya is home made and spiced just right. We finished our chiya and the cake and then rolled out of the restaurant with the biggest smiles on our faces.
Our server chatted with us right until the very end of the meal. He was very professional, friendly, and we can not wait to go back. This place is going to be a new staple.
What a hidden gem! The food and service were both extraordinary! Do not let the outside of the restaurant fool you, when you walk inside its like you've stepped in to Nepal!
Had the chicken momo dumplings to start. The sauce was delicious.
For main had Kathmandu vegetable & the Himalayan chicken grill. Loved the Kathmandu, chicken was also good. Had the coconut rice & garlic flat bread which had good flavour. Best curry I've had in Calgary.
Been here several times & I've never been disappointed. Make sure you get a reservation. Nepalese cuisine at its finest. Try momos, chauchau, tofu, eggplant. I love everything on their menu. Service is excellent. Thalis are great too! Yummy!
Simply amazing! I'm still craving their food and it's been over a week since I've been there! The staff are so wonderful and the food divine! Make sure you make a reservation, they are busy from open to close.
The food was absolutely delicious and the portions were perfect - not too heavy or light. I also like the presentation of the food! The servers were friendly and remembered who ordered what, and even our glasses of water were not left empty for too long.
Fantastic evening. Initially came to get take out but was seated so quickly that we stayed. Although busy, such a wonderful and comfortable environment to dine in. We ordered the chicken mo-mo this is a must appetizer to get when coming here. Also ordered the Himalayan lamb and the Himalayan tofu. The lamb was as expected, but the tofu we both agreed we would come back for!! We're not big veggie dish eaters but this was exceptionally surprisingly fantastic. It's a must visit, great staff, great food and great environment. You won't regret it!!
This is one of my favourite spots in the city. The service is friendly and warm. The food came out in a timely manner. The restaurant has a really nice feel to it. The layout isn't the greatest by the front door, but that's just a minor inconvenience. The food is incredible. I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I've tried. I try to go every couple weeks. Great Nepalese food.
We had a lovely experience here - food was delicious, the atmosphere is really nice, we loved the Nepal art and the service was so warm and friendly!! Definitely a gem you should try!!
Food was great. Each bite was full of flavour. I would recommend to make a reservation. The price is pricier with less quantity. The servers were friendly though We will be back for more.
I love exploring Calgary's food scene so I am frequently eating out. This is, hands down, my absolute favourite restaurant in the city. The food is absolutely delicious, the portions are generous, and the service is warm and genuine. You'd expect a restaurant this great to be expensive but, in fact, the Himalayan is cheaper than most restaurants, including chains like Moxies and Earls. On top of all of that, they recently renovated the place so it is now absolutely stunning. I want to have my wedding here (is that possible?!)! If you decide to try this place out, I recommend making a reservations as they fill up very quickly. Enjoy!
Had the Himalayan shrimp and the cottage cheese chili and they were two of the most delicious dishes I've had in a long time. Service was attentive and extremely friendly. Lovely atmosphere. Chai tea for dessert was perfect finisher. Go here. Go here now.
Tried the buffet lunch on a Wednesday and the place was packed. Good value for the selection fo food. I "chau chau" (noodles) was my favourite but all the other items were good too. Friendly service as well.
We had Chicken Mo Mo, Mango Fruity Shrimp and Spinach Tarkari with lamb, they all tasted amazing!!! The service was also awesome. We also loved the paintings and the decorations inside the restaurant! Will definitely come back again!!!!!
Came here about three weeks ago with friends.
First of all, great service! Really friendly servers that kindly explain the menu. They were really attentive.
Their chicken dishes were so good but the texture on lamb was not what I come to expect from lamb curry dishes.
Overall great experience.
It was best customer service I had in Calgary.
The Himalayan is my go-to for great food. The lunch buffet is incredible (especially if the macha ko johl is on!), dinner is awesome (try the Himalayan lamb and veggie momos). The service, provided by one of my favorite families, is always personal, friendly, and prompt. I could go on, but there's no reason for you to keep reading when you could be heading to Himalayan!
Awesome family run and owned restaurant. The service and food are always so good. Mango chicken is my favorite. The servers are great at explaining the menu and answering any questions you have.
Amazing food! Great service! One of my favorite restaurants in Calgary!
We usually always order the same thing from here. It's delicious as always. Not one bad thing to say about this place. The staff are very attentive and we are loving the renos as well.
Delicious. If you want a delicious meal and genuine service then this is your place. Amazing food and atmosphere every time I go.
I've been here several times over the years and last nights was great once again. The service, atmosphere, menu diversity, portion sizes, flavours and authenticity are all top notch. Mono Dumplings are great, Himalayan grill a large portion with 6-7 chunks of lamb, and the chauchau noodles are excellent and large. The only downside was the naan (coconut) wasn't as light and fluffy as usual it was more like pizza crust.
So much more than I was expecting!. Title says it all. Flavors were amazing and the atmosphere and staff are great.
It had been awhile. What was I thinking? The Himalayan remains one of the best examples of a restaurant operated for the comfort and pleasure of its customers. We went for the lunch buffet today and were warmly greeted, seated and served. As mentioned by others, the new reno is beautiful. And the food is fantastic. It remains as good - fresh and tasty - as when we first visited this restaurant at an earlier location in an earlier era. (Hard to remember that far back... ) Over the years its always been a favourite. But do remember, if going for lunch, go early as its full by noon. I think that says it all! We'll be back soon.
Love it!. The lunch buffet is amazing!
The dinner menu is amazing!
Everything about this restaurant is...Amazing.
Stop reading reviews and go!
Just make sure to have a nice empty stomach before you get there because you'll want to eat everything in site.
Don't forget to try the momos!
This time we were prepared and made reservations beforehand so that we were able to get a table at The Himalayan! Ryan was kind enough to join us again! The place was quite lovely with wonderful decor. The delightful aroma in the restaurant really stimulated our appetites.
Delicious. Went for lunch today, third time being there and it was exceptional. The variety, the depth of flavour (slow and careful cooking) was really excellent. 10/10
So good. I always love going to this restaurant. The food is amazing and consistent. One of the best restaurants in Calgary.
Never disappoints!. I'm so glad we took a chance to try this place a few months ago. Every time we go back either to dine in, or take out the flavours, service, price are dead on! They renovated the restaurant and it looks very fresh and clean. I like the layout better as well!
Little gem!. I always love coming to this restaurant as it has delicious food and the service is great. Staff is very kind and friendly, especially the owner. Love the recent renovations!
Friendly staff, good ambiance, great food. We ordered lamb dal Bhat, grilled chicken, and shrimp bhuteko. All were great, and we like the shrimp bhuteko the best. Our server Jon was very friendly and attentive.
A great restaurant. Himalayan food is closed to Indian but it's not as spicy hot. The Indian food base is already hot, here you can choose to make it hot but by default it's not hot. It's very tasty and we tried everything. Grilled lamb was great, the curries were delicious, and the Momo's were there best. My favorites were the coconut naan and the eggplant dish. The desserts were great as well, would recommend the mango ice cream. The service was the bonus. Exceptional service to go with the great food makes this a must try.
I can definitely say that this is a great place. First time I got to taste their dishes was when I was with my mom. She and I were visiting a friend in the area. We were told to try this place since it's already lunch time and we were craving something delicious. The inside was neat and simple yet very nice and easy to the eyes with a nice ambiance. Our orders came quickly and we enjoyed our foods still warm. They were all delicious and fulfilling. We love every bit of them.
The food is very delicious, the price is reasonable, and the service is great! All waiters are super attentive! We tried medium spicy level and it was actually quite spicy (I'm confident to say I can eat very very spicy food). The Chiya black tea with spices are very exotic and tastes actually quite interesting and nice (Unlimited refill! What a nice place!) The Bhuteko Shrimp is very well balanced with eggplant tomato and onions. This is the first time I've ever try Nepali food and I love it. Would definitely visit again next time I'm in Clagary.
Great first experience for Nepali cuisine. Restaurant is well decorated and service was friendly and attentive. My favourites were the garlic naan and shrimp chau chau (egg flour noodles).
Authentic Nepalese resturant. Most resturant in calgary have Indian flavor spice base but this resturant gives Nepali flavor. Not too much spices or little less...just the perfect. Pork Momo was the best, very juicy and flavorful. Chicken chowmin was totally awesome. Grilled poleko lamb had very nice smoky flavor.
My dad treated me to a meal here and we were so amazed at how the service and foods are so good. Firstly, the place has a good ambiance and it's neat. Secondly, the foods we ordered are all delicious and fulfilling. Good portions and presentation is very appealing to the eyes. Just the look of them is already mouth watering. Service is fast and servers are nice too!
