Very tasty food. I have been going to Garlic & Chili for 9 years, my favorite is the spicy chicken lunch special. They are always on time on my pickup orders. Just a warning here if you try this place you will never go anywhere else for Chinese food.
I love this place , big servings and reasonably spicy for an out of the way place in North Burnaby , a real mom and pop operation , good Mongolian Beef and Maipo Tofu
Located in a strip mall hidden one block northeast of Lougheed Highway at Holdom Avenue, Garlic & Chili Restaurant 蓬萊川魯菜館 is a ma-and-pa shop that serves homey Chinese dishes that will satisfy your simple cravings.
Since I work nearby (less than a two-minute drive), I was a bit shocked that this place never made an appearance on our blog. My apologies.
The two of us ordered three Lunch Special rice plates and each came with a complimentary bowl of soup. With only two options, we opted for two bowls of wonton soup and one bowl of hot & sour soup.
The Wonton Soup 云吞汤 has always been my priority choice. Served in pork bone broth, each bowl had four small yet plump wontons. The filling was pork, nothing but pork, and it was seasoned mildly with salt and pepper.
Unless it's my vegetarian day, or else I usually would not order the Hot & Sour Soup 酸辣汤. However, I did order one this time just so Buddha Boy could have a taste. Thickened with corn starch, the soup had very limited julienne cuts of canned bamboo shoot, carrot, tofu and black fungus. Oh, egg was there too, but it was pretty hard to detect.
Buddha Boy ordered two items from the Lunch Special menu. The first was Chicken with Chinese Mushroom & Bamboo 双冬鸡肉. Flavor was predominately sweet bean paste. Generous amount of tenderized chicken with onions (lots of it) and green/red bell peppers acting as fillers. Honestly, we love onions, but it was a bit overwhelming. The iceberg lettuce salad was lightly drizzled with a sweet and tangy dressing.
Buddha Boy's second plate was Chicken with Satay Sauce 沙爹鸡肉. Yes, the dish looked similar to the previous. Flavor was the Cantonese-style satay sauce. Again, the plate had a considerable amount of tenderized chicken, a reasonable portion of green/red bell peppers and a massive load of onions.
I had my usual Lunch Special of Diced Chicken with Chili & Garlic Sauce 渔香鸡丁. The garlicky soy mix had a nice spicy kick. Similar to the previous two dishes, plenty of tenderized chicken with identical fillers. Yes, by now, we've realized that all the Lunch Special chicken dishes used the same ingredients with only the flavoring agents being different.
One of my favorite dish here was the Drunken Chicken with Homemade Chili Garlic Sauce 口水鸡, aka saliva chicken. While not authentic, Buddha Boy and I have always enjoyed this cold dish. Unlike the classic version where only green onions are used as the refreshing element, the version here used a lot of cilantro to balance the spiciness. This version was also a lot less oily than the classic version.
We also had three orders of Crispy Spring Roll 炸春卷 (one roll per order). The meatless spring rolls had only cabbage and carrots. The stuffing was lightly seasoned white pepper. While these were nicely deep-fried with crispy outer coats, the rolls, as a whole, were not too satisfying. Most likely not a repeat for us.
With six tables, twenty-two seats and only one man in the kitchen, this clean yet divey joint is not meant for large groups. Price points can be a bit high if ordering off the regular menu. The Lunch Special menu is a much better bang for the buck and it runs daily from 11am to 4pm.
This place is very good, large portions, low prices,good quality food and very nice staff. I will definitely be recommending this place to friends.
Best chinese good value2. We stumbled on tgis little gem by axccident, we were looking for the buy low next door, talk about lucky! regular patrons now, have brought numerous friends here, who now come from all over without us! talk abput cheating! lovely fresh food, never too much grease, dont get the msg throat after a meal, huge portions even on lunch specials
Will be back again. The specialty "ko shui ji" (meaning delicious chicken) is yummy. it looks like hainanese chicken with dark soy sauce and chilii. they also have many other dishes with lots of sauces and flavor. the restaurant is really small though so be patient to wait for seat at lunch. will go back again.
Delicious Canadian Style Chinese food for delivery. After upon reading the reviews here, I decided to order some Chinese food for delivery. We ordered..Dinner Combo B for 2, Chicken Chow Mein, Mixed Seafood with black bean sauce and Mapo Tofu.
My family members are picky eaters yet they all commented on the quality of the dishes.
1. Not Salty ( We enjoy eating with less sauce/sodium...even a little bland is good.)
2. Smaller portion than other restaurants but ingredients are fresh! ( Scallops were perfectly cooked, not overdone)
3. Without the strong Chinese food spice/herb. It is very westernized.
The only thing I didn't like was the eggroll that came with the combo. I never like the smell of eggrolls...more into spring rolls so...that's a no no.
Wish they served fortune cookies.LOL

Szechuan Style Beef Noodle in Soup - the broth was SO flavourful. The noodles were perfectly cooked and did a fantastic job of absorbing the wonderful soup. The large chunks of beef were so tender and delicious. Well worth the $6.50 we paid!
Spicy Chicken Szechuan Style - delicious sauce. There isn't a ton of meat - but it was still a big hit with the husband and I. The veggies were cooked well (I hate when restaurants get lazy and the peppers and onions are only slightly cooked and still mostly raw) and the few hot chili peppers we found really added a BIG kick. For $6.50 this meal was a great value.
I definitely recommend this restaurant if you want a nice spicy kick with your Chinese food!
Best chineese in north Burnaby fresh and good flavor
Good, cheap lunch. With my main I was served a nice bowl of wonton soup - not the starchy rubber balls that are served in too many places but rather tender, tasty meat in a subtle wrapper in a good broth. My good size plate of Szechuan chicken was loaded with vegetables and chicken and they added broccoli for me without a fuss. Very tasty and at $6.50 for the whole thing, a total steal.
The place is the definition of a whole in the wall sitting in a tired strip mall north of Lougheed at Holdom. No more than 20 seats and zero atmosphere but the lady serving is very pleasant and accommodating and appears to be the front of house half of a husband and wife team. My office is a couple of minutes away so we'll try take out the next time we need to feed the crew.
