Chicken biryani: I absolutely love my chicken biryani, and it is what I usually order. Some places can be hit or miss though so I was hoping Desi Turka would be the former. The portion was huge! The takeout box was jam packed to the brim, as evident in this photo.
The chicken biryani was absolutely delicious and writing about it is making my mouth water. The basmati rice was incredibly fluffy and fragrant with all the spices and herbs they used. The chicken was juicy, tender and very flavourful although there could have been a few more pieces.
The lunch buffet was great and has a good variety of food. The environment was clean and quiet except for the mantra music in the background. My only complaint is that there wasn't much to offer for drinks and there was no dessert! The curry and masala was amazing though! Oh and the okra was just fantasticly done. Will come again.
Along 6th Street, near the Burnaby-New Westminster border, a rather unassuming restaurant named Desi Turka Indian Cuisine serves up some fairly good East Indian fare. If it wasn’t for the aroma of Indian spices emanating from restaurant, you’d hardly know that it was there. Inside the smallish restaurant (about 28-30 seats), the decor is sparse yet well maintained. On all of my visits during the weekday lunch hour, it was hardly busy and I was usually the only one there. They’ve mentioned that it gets busier during the evening and that they have a fairly robust take-out business.
This gem is located smack dab in the middle of a very competitive East Indian restaurant row. Because it is the BEST in the area, a competitor is bringing their rating down. Justice must be "served"! You can go to the competitors for the simple dishes but if you are ready to take your taste buds to the next level, order desi lamb and seafood dishes. Keep picky vegetarian and vegan friends happy too. Witty owner and waitresses. Order take out early! Delivery times decent for such a busy place. Parking hard to find in this area. Desi has 7 spots in the back. Prices okay. Clean newly remodeled restaurant. Not big. Bollywood videos! If you don't have an East Indian grandma that can cook for you, this is the next best thing.
I usually come to Desi Turka with my husband Dave weekly, however, after reading some reviews I was ticked off with some individuals below. We came in around 1pm today for lunch (even with the snow), we had the karhai chicken, lamb curry, rice, and garlic naan, we kept everything medium since I can't take that much spice. Everything tasted good as always and the service from Gurdip was great. He talked with us until our meal was ready! We will be coming on the weekend with our 2 sons and parents to get another meal in! ~ Rupi Kalsi
Good Quality authentic Indian food. Been there a few times, and am never disappointed. Quantities are sufficient for normal people. Lunch specials are perfect quantity, and quality is as always excellent, you get the same quality food for lunch special as you would if you order it for dinner. Will recommend for authenticity and quality of food!
Ordered for delivery on a Friday night. Food arrived within about 70 minutes. I consider this to be very decent.
Ordered the usual - vegetable pakora, vegetable samosa, chana masala and garlic naan.
The samosa was fantastic. Very flavourful and crisp.
Chana masala was great as well.
Garlic naan was the usual - not amazing, certainly not bad.
The vegetable pakora was not very good but I don't fault the restaurant for this. It's a deep fried item and I didn't consider this when making the order. I wouldn't order this item again for delivery but would certainly order it if dining in.
Was a lot spicier than I expected which was a great surprise as I find most Indian (and Thai and Mexican...) restaurants in Metro Vancouver to go light with spice.
Overall, prices quite decent, food very good. I'd certainly recommend this.
We wanted to try a new place tonight and headed to the website of our trusty Entertainment Book to find a likely spot. Desi Turka popped up as a local place that has good ratings across several review sites,so we decided to give it a try. What a good move that proved to be!! The restaurant is small, but clean and fresh looking. The menu has a good mix of meat and vegetarian options, with various naan and side dishes. The food was fast and delicious, not too oily or greasy, portion sizes are very generous, and the peshwari naan is to die for! I could go back and visit again just for that alone. Really happy to have found this little gem - will definitely be back especially as I forgot to use our voucher!!
Can't say much for their decor, as I've only used Orderit.ca to order delivery.
Butter chicken is great, and if you want spicy, you really have to tell them, "Indian hot", then they'll know ;)
Garlic naan also pretty yummy, not oily at the bottom.
Delivery's pretty prompt, though you have to tell them if you pay by credit card.
Delicious food...my favorite restaurant now! thank you!. Simply irresistible food! Great service. Great prices. Great restaurant in lower mainland! Whole family loved it!
Gobhi Manchurian. Cauliflower pieces covered in batter, deep-fried and then tossed in a spicy, tangy sauce.
Fantastic food in an intimate restaurant. Will definitely be back. The chicken karhai was outstanding.
AMAZING!!!. First and foremost I am a very picky eater when it comes to my indian food! I was recommended to this restuarant by my friend who lives locally. I was very surprised by how amazing the food was. My boyfriend and I ate the chilli paneer, butter chicken, pulao rice, a few garlic naans, and the SUPER TASTY mango lassi's. The price was super cheap coming to about $35 with tip. The server was friendly and it is a family owned restaurant which made the atmosphere feel welcoming. The owner came to great us after the meal and asked us how everything was :) the owner and his wife are the cooking duo and we definitely assured them that this is going to be our regular indian spot and that he should keep this table for us every week!! RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE WHO LOVES THEIR INDIAN FOOD!
Tasty new spot along East Burnaby's short Indo-Canadian strip. Have just tried the take-out here so far. Everyone was quite pleased with all the dishes ordered. The layers of spices tasted pefectly and it was cooked well. The Palak/Spinach Naan was delicious! Service was quite friendly. Will be back.
We were recommended to Desi Turka by a Punjabi friend of ours who is a major foodie and an authority on Indian cuisine. Wow! I love this place! Not only are they super friendly, their food rocks and it's not at all expensive. The chicken pakoras are awesome and we also had Butter Chicken and Lamb Vindaloo - the Naan is fresh too. Everything was super tasty. I've had Indian food all over the place and this is among the very best I've had. I'll definitely be back!
Fantastic food and friendly service. We went and tried out the newest indian restaurant in its first week of opening and were very impressed. the food was delicious and we got great family style service. Definitely recommend everyone checks it out. Desi Turks is my new favorite indian restaurant!
