Shanghai Dimsum House is located on the 2nd floor of Crystal Mall, Burnaby. They have changed their English name throughout the years. They won the Chinese Restaurant Award silver award in 2010 as Wang’s Shanghai Cuisine. Then sold the restaurant with the name changed to Xu’s Wonton House. Recently, it is changed to it’s current name, Shanghai Dimsum House. Please note, this 白玉蘭麵家 is different from the one in Richmond, which is called Chen’s Shanghai Restaurant.

This is gonna be a short and simple review. Previously known as xu's, it has been renovated to Shanghai dimsum house. The majority of the menu has been carried over.

The prices are very fair, and yes, you may get a grumpy person at the counter from time to time. But with value like this, your gonna draw different walks of life and unfortunately the rude cheapskate customers with no manners. I don't blame the merchant, I've seen some pretty rude customers demanding ridiculous things.

Highly recommend the siu long baos. Very flavourful broth, melt in your mouth delights. The skin was thin. Be careful, you can burn yourself, if your not a experienced soup dumping eater.

I would recommend this place to anyone.

A lot of reviews seem to grumble a bit about the service here. I think maybe one should imagine what it would be like to be so busy all day everyday. The young woman who took my order anticipated my questions (they were painfully obvious) and then kept track of me as I waited for my order (some guy lost and out of place in a bustling Asian food court), so thank you. This is the first place that I had ever tried Xi Long Boa (a long time ago) and after having them a few other places and getting an idea of what they should be, these are still very good. Tasty broth (which I still get all over myself), flavorful little meatball and decent thin wrapping. The green onion pancake that I also tried was a little less exciting, maybe a little thiner than I expected but still tasty. Two women working hard at the front counter making dumplings, leave no doubt that you are getting a hand crafted product. And a smoking deal at less than $10 for 5 dumplings and the pancake!

Have heard great reviews of this place and decided to check it out for myself.

The girl at the till wasn't uber friendly but when I asked for a noodle recommendation she did suggest a great tasting one. I did not want spicy that day so the chicken and vegetable noodle soup was a great suggestion.

The Xiao Long bao (steamed juicy buns) came with 5 and seemed larger compared to what I am used to. By the time I brought it to my table (after waiting for one) the buns seemed to have deflated into flat buns. They still had great juice in them with good flavours but felt the skin was a little dry and got a little hard to the point it stuck onto the side of the bamboo tier.

Overall great flavours and will be back to try other dishes.

One of my favourite spots for Shanghai Dumplings in Burnaby. The xiao long baos are delicious and consistently good! I really love the dumplings. They're relatively bigger dumplings compared to other places, but are just big enough to fit perfectly into my mouth. When that broth explodes on the first chew.. mini foodgasm!

I bought Xiao long bao (5 pieces) for a late lunch. The Xiao long bao was packed in a foam plastic box. Obviously the presentation was not very nice because I ordered takeout. However it tasted ok or above average. The soup inside the Xiao long bao had a bigger portion. It was great that the skin of the Xiao long bao was thin (not too thick). The meat inside was very soft that it melted in my mouth immediately.

The service was okay. A customer in front of me had complained that her order took quite long that she almost wanted to cancel the order. This food stall was quite busy and popular. I ordered the Xiao long bao with a number. The server told me that it would take about 10 mins., so I walked away and shopped around the mall and then walked back to the stall to pick up my food.

After renovations, Xu's Wonton House is now Shanghai Dimsum House. Menu looks the same. Went back with a friend today and this time I also tried the pan fried version. 1. Bayulan Steamed Mini Pork Buns ($4.95 for 5). Tasty (and slightly fatty tasting?), flavourful broth inside. 7. Shanghai Style Pan Fried Pork Buns ($5.55 for 5)

Previously known as Xu's Dimsum, but changed name after renovations!

I've always heard great reviews about their handmade soup dumpling (Xiao Long Baos) and Shanghainese pastries. My friend and I decided to check out this place after a long day studying at the library right across the street!

For less than $5, you get a steamer with 5 freshly made and steamed soup dumplings! The wait was roughly five minutes. Definitely considered long for a food court vendor, but I can say it was definitely worth it! The skin of the dumpling is a bit thicker than machine made wrappers, but you definitely need it to keep in all the juice of the dumpling! Be careful it's very hot! I would suggest getting extra napkins and carefully suck out the soup first by making a small hole from the top. Don't wait for it to cool down because once it cools, it will start sticking to the bottom of the steamer, ripping the dumpling and you lose all the amazing soup!

We also ordered the Shanghai-style fried pork buns. The bun had a similar filling to the previous dish, but because it was pan fried, the soup was extra hot! Be careful with this one because the soup squirts out when you make that first bite! I definitely preferred the steam one as this was slightly greaser for my taste.

Would come back again because we were full and spent only $10 between the two of us! :)

Crystal Mall was our venue for early-afternoon walkabout recently, and then we returned to the food court to try dumplings at Shanghai Dimsum, for an early-evening 'snack-type' dinner.

We ended up trying (via separate orders) two different preparations of their soup dumplings:   XLB - steamed Xiao Long Bao dumplings, and SJB - pan-fried Sheng Jian Bao dumplings.  We did the steamed dumplings first, and when I returned to the counter to place a second order I was convinced (by a fellow customer in line) to give the pan-fried dumplings a try (I really enjoyed this friendly and informative before-ordering chat, and decided to go with her suggestion).  Wait times, after placing the orders, were about 5-7 minutes (small price to pay for receiving food prepared 'for you', and piping hot from the kitchen!).

Service at the counter was very friendly - I really liked the staff, although busy, they had warm smiles, were attentive, and really did seem to enjoy what they were doing.  A fun note:  one person from the kitchen came out into the Mall area for a short 'stretch' break while we were eating nearby, and popped over to our table to see how we were enjoying the dumplings - then with a big, warm smile and grin, told us how to "slurp" them!  :-)

This was our first taste of these dumplings, so can't relate what we had to any others.  We enjoyed our dining experience -- the dumplings were fun to eat, and the soup and meats inside the dough coverings hot, and tasty.  I thought the coverings on the pan-fried dumplings were a touch dry and tough (maybe fried a little too long?), but the 'rewards' inside were sure good.

We enjoyed Shanghai Dimsum for our "snacky-dinner" experience!!

I love a good xiao long bao.  These steamed Shanghai soup dumplings are bite-sized delights with the a thin wrapper, seasoned pork filling and rich, flavourful savoury broth.  I had heard from some fellow foodies that Shanghai Dimsum House made very good xiao long bao, so I eagerly headed there to try out their take on it.

What I like about their dumplings is that the broth inside the dumplings are not too salty and there's a good amount of soup as well. The meat tasted pretty fresh and was a pretty good ratio to skin. My only complaint is that the skin can get pretty thick sometimes.

Also the fried dumplings have a very crispy outside and holds quite a lot of soup.

Overall my favourite place for Shanghai dumplings. It's not really a secret anymore because the wait for dumplings is a good 10-15 minutes which is long for a food court.

My first experience of Xiao Long Bao in Canada. Right next door to Bubble Waffle Cafe in Crystal Mall (for which I had a SocialShopper coupon) and based on my dining buddy's recommendation we got XLB there as well. Eat it fast. Once it got colder, the skin at the bottom stuck to the paper and it tore when we lifted it off.

One the Best xiao long Bao (XLB) I've ever had on the west coast. The place is located on the top floor in the Crystal Mall food court. Even though food courts has the perception of fast food, they do make each dumpling from scratch and right infront of you! Once ready, you will need to wait as the soup inside so steaming hot. The XLB is big and has a lot to juice inside the wrapper (just the way it should be)! Absolutely love, love, love! And easily, a line up to order! That's how good it is!

Delicious XLB and chili wontons! Their XLB are so big in size because they are filled with meat and hot soup! I know their XLB are really popular cuz pretty much that's what everyone orders, but I actually like their chili wontons more! I love how they are cooked perfectly and packed with so much flavors. The sauce is not overly spicy and it has a hint of sweetness, which I really enjoy! And the portion is pretty big too, comes with 10 pieces!

Finally had a chance to stop by Xu's for a revisit. I seriously hate the parking at Crystal Mall so you know that the food here must be good.

If you look at the English menu, you might not be a bit confused on what to order... pick the "Bayulan" Steamed Mini Pork Buns (aka Shanghai Pork Dumplings aka Xiao Long Bao). There's nothing mini about these... full of soup inside the thin wrappers.

This is yet another chapter on who has the best XLB around.  In this case, this is the best I've had in Vancouver...  so far.  I'm sure there are plenty who would argue...  but I must say on the balance of things, this hits all the right notes.

There's a LOT of soup
The skin is just thin enough
It's served with the right vinegar.

I also like the other variety of bites sold here.  Afterall, XLB should be street food snacks, not high end dining.  If you haven't been here, you're doing yourself a dis-service.

This is so far the best XLB I have had in Burnaby. The XLB here is never a disappointment, esp with the oozing pork broth when you take a bite! This is definitely a to go place if you want a hearty snack. However, wait time can be sometimes long as they would only steam fresh when you order and always a bit of a line-up during the lunch rush hour at Crystal Mall!

Awesome Food Court meal. Needed a quick dinner and this was on my wishlist so came and had a bowl of Dan Dan Noodle which is very good. The peanut butter with a bit of spicyness made for a good soup base to give the noodles a very unique taste.

Also had the Beef Roll which is also pretty good too, will definitely come back since I do visit the mall next door often.

I went to Xu's on a relative's recommendation and I would return in a heartbeat. I had the Shanghai dumplings and potstickers - to die for! It was clearly evident that they were fresh and made by people who understand the delicacies of the cuisine. As Shanghai buns were meant to be juicy, the juice emanated from them. You won't be disappointed if you go - but be prepared to bring a healthy dose of patience with you as the place gets busy, especially on weekends.

Very yummy, but heed the warning to "be aware of the hot juice in our buns." The Shanghai style fried pork dumplings are sprinkled with sesame seeds and chopped green onions and the thick exterior hides enough lip-scorching broth to injure the person sitting across from you. The taste is quite delicate and not too greasy. The Bayulan steamed mini pork buns are just as juicy (and potentially dangerous). The workers make the dumplings fresh on site. Fantastic taste and I can't wait to come back and try more from their menu.

My favourite place for Shanghainese soup dumplings (xiao long bao) is located in Crystal Mall, at Xu's Wonton House. The food stall is also apparently known for a few other dishes, with one including their rice cake which I have never tried. Actually, the only item I have tried here is the XLB! As for the service, man… the staff ain't friendly. However, I decided to speak in Chinese this time and wow… what a big difference it makes! The owner's wife was super friendly and even asked how many plates I needed. FML even the cashier was friendly when I returned the steamers after saying "thank you" in Chinese.

...ordered some Xiao Long Bao (XLB) from Xu's Wonton House. We have not tried enough XLB to judge the taste but we both liked it. They were very hot and juicy inside but felt like the skin was a bit too thick on the top.

I’ve heard many good things about the xiao long bao at Xu’s Wonton House in Crystal Mall but, I must admit, I was confused when I first visited and couldn’t find them on the menu. I’ve never heard of “Bayulan” Steamed Mini Pork Buns but that’s what they call it here.

The XLB served by Xu’s are far larger and soupier than the more delicate dumplings at Din Tai Fung in Taipei. The skin is still just the right thickness and the soup is fantastic.
