Fortune House Seafood Restaurant 福聯海鮮酒家 is located inside Metrotown. It is convenient to have a restaurant inside a mall, but it would mean the restaurant is always crowded. Highly recommend making reservation.

We came here for dim sum. It is just another typical Chinese dim sum place. It is not bad, but it isn't the best.

Golden Yolk Custard Lava Buns (Liu Sha Bao) 疏乎蛋流沙包 is very cute for photo taking, but it is very dry. It isn't what we are expected.

Decent priced dim sum with very large portions. The flavours were there and everything was crispy and steaming hot. Only miss was the Chinese donut wrapped in crepe which was too doughy and almost impossible to eat. It was incredibly heavy. Would recommend coming... Had to wait on a Monday afternoon at 1pm for 2 people. Super busy which means their customers are always coming back for good food.

Did not need to wait too long for a table (My visit was on Sunday right about 11:30am)No special disount/time for the tea unless you're their memeber, so no rushA variety of Cantonese item options: 薑汁純雙皮奶 :pService was quite effecient At the back side of the Order Record, it explains the whole Chinese tea time concept!Cutleries were kind of dated...

The first photo is of the mango pudding fish and not only is it adorable, it is also a fantastic and iconic HK dessert. I thought that the texture was quite firm and gelatinous and had a strong mango taste. Lovely!

This is the spicy and sour soup with seafood. This had a punch of sourness and spiciness and was a lovely appetizer to What we call "expand stomach" 开胃

been here a couple times, i must say everytime i went here it's never for a quick meal, but a heavy meal, and usually during chinese new year or, some other events, and so, this time is no different, it's chinese new year, the food was one of the selection from the chinese new year dinner, and definitely something that is worth while i will say. most of the food are definitly okay, and i tried the dimsum over here as well it was definitely nice, but again it'll be a little bit more expensive as well since the location is prime :D so then, the food over here is definitely alright, if not some of them are above average.

Fortune House Seafood Restaurant often gets discounted because it’s located in Metrotown and, let’s be honest, the lineup here can get rather discouraging during the peak dim sum hours.

Since we live nearby and we wanted some dim sum before heading out for a quick run to the border, we popped over to Fortune House. They open at 9am on the weekend so we managed to find a table rather easily.

We started out with an order of Deep Fried Taro Dumplings. The deep fried exterior was pleasantly contrasted with the creamy inside filling.

Har Gow is a standard dim sum dish and I found Fortune House’s version to be pretty good. Actually, all of the dim sum dishes that I tried on this visit were all pretty solid.

I find that one of the things that I really enjoy about the Chinese Donut Rice Roll is how the velvety smooth rice roll contrasts with the crunchy donut on the inside.

Steamed beef omasum is probably not one of the dishes that most westerners would eagerly be willing to try. But if you’ve never tried it before, you should definitely give it a whirl. By itself, it’s fairly flavourless… which is why the proper accompanying sauce is important.

Steamed Beef Balls is another one of our go-to dim sum dishes.

Last up on this visit was the Mini Egg Tarts. They were appropriately served last as they were freshly baked and still warm. I love how there were so many delicate, flaky layers to the crust.

Overall, I thought the food was fairly well prepared and, because we came by so early, we didn’t have to wait.

I went with a crowd and was thought that I might have trouble finding something to eat since I don't eat meat. Turns out they have non-meat choices available if you ask your server. My favourite was the Pan Fried Ham with Tomato Sauce.  It would be a great place to have veggie dim sum.

I went to a complimentary meal courtesy of YVR Foodies and the food, service, and ambiance were excellent.  At Fortune House the food is authentic traditional Cantonese Chinese food.  Fortune House is located at Metrotown and is easily accessible.  For Dim Sum they served Tempera which was very tasty and crispy.  Then they served a Plate of 3 which included a shrimp dumpling, sticky rice with pork, and deep fried dumpling with pork and mushroom. The Dim Sum was excellent. The first course was Sautéed Beef Tenderloin with Mixed Peppers in a birds nest with deep fried mild around the sides.  The presentation of this dish was excellent and the beef was tender.  The second course was Steamed Scallop with garlic in a shell.  The presentation was very good and this dish was tasty.  The third course was Deep Fried Fish with sweet and sour sauce and crispy rice on the side.  The fish was delicious.    The fourth dish was pork spareribs with curry sauce.   It symbolizes loyalty and commitment.   The spareribs were very tender and a very popular dish at the table I was sitting at.  The fifth dish was Soya Sauce Chicken which symbolizes prosperity.  It was very good.  I really enjoyed the chicken.  The sixth dish was Scallop Fried Rice.  The seventh dish was Mango Pudding for dessert.  This dish was in the shape of a fish.  It was an excellent presentation,  and also it was tasty.  At Fortune House they have a meal share program.  When a item on the menu that is starred is ordered, then a meal is donated to a needy person.  Fortune House has been in business for 25 years, and I recommend it.

I love going out for Chinese Food and I know that there is more to Chinese Food than sweet and sour pork and chow mein. So when #YVRFoodies were invited to a Chinese New Year's Feast at Fortune House, I was excited to finally experience authentic Chinese cuisine, beautifully crafted by award winning chefs from China. The plating was creative, pleasing to the eyes, palate, stomach and heart! This New Year's Feast had everything required to have a prosperous New Year of the Monkey!

Our 6 Course meal as follows:

Appies were served as well:
Assorted vegetable tempura: I LOVE tempura, and I really enjoyed Fortune House's preparation.

Dimsum Trio: house shrimp dumpling, deep fried meat dumpling, sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaf: My favourite was the deep fried meat dumpling! Dim Sum literally means to touch the heart and this definitely made me happy.

1st Course
Deep fried tilapia, house sweet and sour sauce, crispy rice
A nice change from the pork version! Great presentation. Symbolizes prosperity.

2nd Course
Marinated tender pork ribs, coconut curry drizzle, seasonal greens: As a Filipina, I would have liked it more if I had some steamed rice with it! The Chinese have a different idea when feasting, the rice is more of a filler, so we had rice at the end to ensure that everyone had there fill. By not needing the rice it signifies that there was an abundance of meat/entries which is seen as being prosperous. Symbolizes loyalty, commitment, truly valued.

3rd Course
Garlic Steamed fresh scallop served in shell, vermicelli, infused oil: I enjoyed the presentation of this dish and it tasted just as good as it looked! How can you go wrong with garlic! Symbolizes lively spirit.

4th Course
XO sauce stir fry beef tenderloin, mixed peppers, deep fried milk in a bird's nest which was made out of deep fried noodle. Surprisingly loved the deep fried milk, and the beef had a really nice spice. Symbolizes savings for the New Year.

5th Course
Traditional soy sauce chicken
Classic, chicken was nice and moist and not too salty. Symbolizes good luck.

6th Course
Mango pudding shaped like a fish for prosperity! There was milk put on the table, which I didn't know was for topping the mango pudding, until my Chinese friend used it. It was not too sweet, just right to end the meal.

After my experience at Fortune House, I know now it's about balance of flavours, textures, togethernes, family, community. If that is the experience that you are looking for, you need to come to Fortune House with a your family and friends.

For over 25 years, Fortune House Restaurant has been a staple in the Burnaby area. Located inside Metropolis at Metrotown mall, this award-winning restaurant is well-known for its dim sum dishes and traditional Chinese cooking techniques. I attended a nine-course meal courtesy of the group YVR Foodies, a Meetup Group and monthly event series for food lovers in Vancouver. This is a good way to meet new friends and try out new restaurants.

For over 25 years, Fortune House Seafood Restaurant has been delighting diners with their delicious Chinese cuisine.  Last week, I was invited to a YVR Foodies meetup at Fortune House Seafood where we indulged in a multi-course Chinese New Year feast. Metropolis Metrotown. Fortune House Seafood is conveniently located on the second level of Metropolis in Metrotown.  You will certainly pass by it if you are coming into the mall from the Skytrain.  The interior of the restaurant is definitely of a more upscale Chinese restaurant.

The best and most surprising development is their partnership with Mealshare, a charity that gives a meal every time you buy a meal tagged with their logo on the menu.

As you can see from the pictures below, Fortune House has many qualifying items -- lots more than most Mealshare restaurants, which typically mark maybe 2-3 items.

The way Mealshare.ca works is that the restaurant makes a contribution every time you buy a marked menu item. And because lots of people like to buy dessert (and all the desserts are Mealshare items), Fortune House is providing a lot of meals through Mealshare! This really says something about the restaurant's owner being so committed to the principles behind Mealshare that he is basically making a charitable donation with almost every patron that walks in the door.

Yeah. Some people are really nice.

For this reason alone I'm going to score them higher than they would normally get for food and service -- I didn't go tonight just to interview them about Mealshare. I went because I was invited to eat-and-blog. Read on...

I had an opportunity to enjoy a 9 course meal tonight at the Metrotown Fortune House. The food was relatively good. Unfortunately, all the entrees were served cold.

Here's the breakdown of my view of each course (each would have been better served hot):

The assorted vegetable tempura (broccoli, green bean, carrot, celery, etc), homemade garlic chili sauce was served in a martini glass. The tempura batter was nice, crispy and tasty. Unfortunately, no hint of the garlic chilli sauce.

Dim sum trio: House Shrimp Dumpling, Deep Fried Meat Dumpling, Sticky Rice Wrapped in Bamboo Leaf. Small portions but tasty. I can see why Fortune House is known for their dim sum. I didn't detect much msg which is a huge plus.

Deep Fried Tilapia, House Sweet and Sour Sauce, Crispy Rice - Tilapia is served whole including the head on a bed of sweet and sour fish. 2 squares of crispy rice came with the dish and remained crispy. The sauce was just right - not overwhelming. Overall, the entree was really good. Lots of fish meat.

Marinated Tender Pork Ribs, Coconut Curry Drizzle, Seasonal greens was probably the disappointment entree of the night. The Pork Ribs didn't look very appetizing and it didn't have much taste (no coconut flavour detected). It looked and tasted like it was boiled. The seasonal greens were really good. It was served as the bed for the ribs.

Garlic Steam Fresh Scallop served in Shell, Vermicelli, Infused Oil - wish it was served with less garlic. It overwhelmed the taste of the scallop and vermicelli.

XO Sauce Stir Fry Beef Tenderloin, Mixed Peppers, Deep Fried Milk, Birds Nest was my favourite dish of the night. The plating was beautiful. The beef tenderloin was moist and flavourful. The mixed peppers flavour was distinct from the beef even though it was stir fried together. The deep fried milk was delicious. I would recommend eating the beef and mixed peppers first. The deep fried milk had a sweeter flavour and was closer to a dessert.

Traditional Soy Sauce Chicken was nothing special. You can probably get the same thing at a Chinatown cooked meat store.

Fried Rice was ok. Served with egg whites and gai lan slices.

For dessert, we had the mango pudding. It was shaped like a fish (creative). The condensed milk was served in a bowl for all to share. Unfortunately, some of us didn't see it and ate the mango pudding by itself. Fortune House's mango pudding is more like jello. I prefer mango pudding made with real mangos and condensed milk. It was still a refreshing way to finish a large meal.

This meal was a 3.5 stars. Yelp doesn't allow for 1/2 stars.

The service was a 2 star.

The service wasn't very good. The 2 waiters that took care of our 4 tables forgot our drinks, did not refill the teapots (indicated with lid off) and were slow to clear our dishes. It was awkward maneuvering with empty individual plates piling up around us.

To be fair, Fortune House is probably the best high end chinese restaurant in Burnaby...but it's average compared to the high end Richmond Chinese Restaurants.

Did the chef change?. This used to be my go to dimsum spot where I bring my guests from out-of-town, because their foods were delicious & of good quality ingredients. I don't mind with their higher price range because i trust that they won't disappoint. However when I went here again on April '13 after several years of absence, and the foods have sadly changed. THe staple dimsum food (hagau) were not as good as they were used to. Not only the taste changed, but the quality has gotten worse as well. They've also gotten really slow with the foods.
:(
A MUST try here though: the deep fried black sesame ball with green tea filling. Eat it while it's hot! It may burn your mouth, but will put a smile in your face

It's still overall offers a B+ grade dimsum, but I can go somewhere else and spend much less for this level. I guess I have to find a new go-to dim sum place now.

I usually cater this restaurant at least twice a month, its convenience after shopping and have dinner here, but the food and service seems to change. Looks like they have new manager and the food don't taste as good as a month ago. Anybody know the difference? Or it's just my imagination?

If: [1] you only want to dine in the Metrotown area of Burnaby South, [2] have lots of time to wait for a table (15+ minutes even with reservation, 30+ minutes without one!) & [3] patience to chase down servers throughout your meal -- then Fortune House is the place to bring family and friends for a Chinese cuisine experience. We have been here over the last few years for family dinners as well as dim sum with friends or visitors, so this review is based on numerous visits.

Given that Fortune House is located in the south side of the Metrotown / Metropolis shopping complex, near the Skytrain station, the food is a bit pricier than other places such Sun Sui Wah on Main Street or the many other choices in Richmond (where quite a few Chinese live in the Lower Mainland.)

Fortune House does offer 10% off on dim sum 9AM to 11AM during weekdays. If you want similar value nearby in a not-so-posh restaurant, then Top Gun in nearby Crystal Mall is a good choice -- if you can find a parking space in the mall when coming by car.

IMHO, dining at Fortune House is for the ambience (renovated in late 2009), big dining areas for large gatherings, and good Cantonese style cuisine (4 out of 5 stars for taste, portion and presentation). As other reviewers have noted here before, the draw back is their lack of attention to service! The management needs to coax more awareness out of their staff how to respond to requests. It detracts from the dining experience when you have to ask two different servers to get more tea, bring condiments and even the menu when ordering another dish. Definitely more attention to timing and approach... or else you go for the food, not the service. Period.

Otherwise, for top notch food, atmosphere AND service, then take the time to dine at any of the Kirin Chinese restaurants elsewhere in Greater Vancouver.

The shrimp and abalone dumpling proved to be an excellent choice! The wrapping was made very well, with the skin being very delicate and thin. The shrimp was succulent and juicy. Beef Tendon 2/5 stars This was my least favourite dish of the meal. The beef tendon was far too hard, and was difficult to chew. It was also rather one dimensional in flavour, with the only flavour coming from the sauce. The tendon itself was bland.  Fried Shrimp Wontons 3/5 stars These came with sweet mayo dip on the side. The mayo sauce actually had canned fruit in it haha. If you've ever had Taiwan

The first item we ordered were the pan-fried noodles with beef and satay sauce. It comes mixed up with tender pieces of sliced beef, peppers, and chunks of pineapple. The sauce was mildly sweet and savoury. These noodles were delicious and quite filling. I’ve never had steamed Chinese donut rice rolls before, but I’ve been wanting to try some. The Chinese donut was warm and chewy inside. The thin rice roll wrapped around it added an interesting texture, but I enjoyed it. You can’t have dim sum without steamed shrimp dumplings. These dumplings were massive and packed full of plump juicy shrimp. They tasted fresh and had a subtle sweetness from the shrimp, but they were a bit

Dim Sum at Fortune House Seafood Restaurant can get very busy (and noisy) during weekends… especially around 11am. That’s why when we visit, we try to come here early. They actually open at 9am on weekends and it’s much easier to get a table and avoid the mall crowds around this time.

What’s a person to do when you have a hankering for both dim sum and lobster? Um… who says you have to choose?

Even though it’s not listed on the regular dim sum menu, most places won’t have a problem with serving lobster during dim sum.

Fortune House is always packed for dim sum because it's conveniently located in Metrotown mall. Even on a Tuesday morning, the wait was estimated to be around half an hour for walk-in. Luckily we got a table after 15 minutes and we quickly decided on the dim sum. By the way, the dim sum sheet is in Chinese and I'm not sure whether there's an English version. But I'm sure there are English names in the official menu. The prices are pretty expensive: small - $3.25 medium - $4.25 large - $5.25 special - $5.75 chef - $7.50 Even though the prices are up there, I think the portions make up for it. Compared to Kirin , the dim sum here are quite a bit larger. Note: Ask about VIP membership options. I bought a VIP card for $10 and it's valid for a year. Fortune House Seafood Restaurant in Metrotown serves up consistently solid dim sum in a more upscale than usual environment. Dim Sum can be both a harrowing and rewarding experience. Regardless of the venue, it usually involves some sort of physical activity (primarily concerning the elbows). Fortune House is no different, although its comparatively luxurious decor necessitates are more subtle approach - arrive early, or take a number and wait. Elbows are a last resort. (Clockwise: 1. Spare Ribs in Black Bean Sauce. 2. XO Sauce. 3. Chicken Feet.) There is no cart service here (that would be uncivilized) - orders are placed by marking off desired dishes on menu sheets and handing it off to your server. Case and I ordered a few dim sum standards. The chicken feet was fall apart tender and bathed in a beautiful savoury sauce; the steamed spare ribs gently seasoned and tender; while the shrimp and chive dumpling proportionately balanced with the right amount of me
