Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House (wow, that’s a mouthful) is a tiny, low key Taiwanese spot tucked away between Daeji Cutlet House and Morak Korean Restaurant. Cash only (obviously, duh). They had on some radio throwback beats which was a bit unexpected but fun. Service is quick and efficient but you’ll need to ask for extra bowls.
Lao Shan Dong... never disappoints me. Generous generous amounts of noodle and beef. Love it here, their house-made noodle is so chewy. The broth is delicious and improved in my opinion! I recommend coming here if you are looking for quality beef noodle with really affordable prices. Perfect comfort food on a cold rainy day :)
I’m a sucker for handmade noodles and great valued food and Lao Shan Dong definitely delivered. Located by Metrotown, check. Handmade noodles, check, good portions and price, check! After a quick glance of the menu outside, and a quick peruse through Yelp reviews, this seemed like a great place for lunch.
Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House is located across street from Metrotown. The location is very easy for people to find. I went to this place for lunch with my friend last week. It’s a small restaurant. The servers are very friendly. We’ve ordered Two Braised Beef Flank in soups, Cool mixed dry seaweed noodle, and cool mixed jelly fish. All the food was from homemade. The food came so fast. The cool mixed dry seaweed noodle and jell fish taste a little sweet, which is very great for summer. The beef noodles were hot and fresh. There are lots of vegetable and meat in the soup. Very large portion. The soups were very tasty. If you want a cheap and delicious Chinese homemade food, you should definitely go this restaurant.
For some reason I wanted a bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle this morning.. So we decided to revisit Lao Shan Dong after 5 years. We ordered the jellyfish and tofu with century eggs for appetizers, two bowls of beef shank & tendon noodles, and an iced soy milk.
The appetizers were both alright, nothing too special. The beef noodles on the other hand still tasted pretty decent. No MSG in their broth, just the simple clean taste of beef stock. Both shanks and tendons were tender and came in huge pieces. Noodles were cooked well too. Probably not the best Taiwanese beef noodle, but still a great bowl of steaming hot comfort food.
Still worthwhile in 2014. I've been a regular here for as long as I can remember... I completely agree that it's not what it once was when the owners were actually working at the restaurant. Perhaps when they opened 'The One' it slipped.
I've noticed lately a lack of consistency not with the noodles which are the same, but in the broth. Sometimes it hasn't been reduced enough so lack the depth and concentration. Other times the bone stock chicken broth is very flavourful but a bit oily.
That said its still a very enjoyable meal, better than any other taiwanese noodle house in the city. They have a different spicy bamboo starter and its money.
Some of the unfair and uneducated comments about minor hiccups and service and the one ungrateful fool who thinks that a massive bowl of meat and noodles for $11 is an outrage when a good percentage of the world is starving should be ignored.
The place is still an institution and should not be taken for granted.
Wow Soup! Boring Place. I come here regularly for one, and one reason only - delicious spicy beef noodle soup. Its #1 on the menu for a reason. Don't let the goofy decor and forgetful name put you off. There is a perfectly spiced stew waiting for you inside. If you want noodle soup don't be tempted by the pretty Cattle Cafe next door - it's all appearance and no flavor - keep walking my friend.
P.S. My western tastebuds tell me that the porkball soup is gross. It really reads well on the menu but it has this strong musky 'barnyard animal' stench that attacks your nostrils as you try to eat it. When I held my breath I was able to get through most of it, but I don't think I could do it again. Beef it up!
Huge portion. Good food. my kids ate everything. great value too.
I have been to about a dozen Taiwanese beef noodle houses and I think this one of the best ones.
This place is good, but it has its bad moments. It's pretty cheap and the staff are pretty polite. Whenver I come here I always get N7 spicy. The noodles aren't bad. However sometimes they overdue it on the sauce and it gets too salty..
Not Bad. I had the Braised Beef Flank/Tendon with Bean Thread In Soup (Spicy) at Lao Shan Dong. I do like this restaurant and I think the food was delicious, however I do agree that it's certainly hyped up by bloggers. It's certainly the best I have had in Vancouver, but it's still not up to my standards compared to some of the ones I have had in Asia. I prefer the beef flank to be more fatty and the tendon to be more chewy. The spicy soup was nowhere near spicy, it had sort of a sweet taste in it. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the meal and I think I would go quite often if it were close to my house.
Fabulous food. We had beef flank, pork noodle soups and the pork dumplings. The food was on our table in less than 5 minutes. Food including drinks for about $10 bucks per person. Highly recommended. Spicy dishes are not too hot.
Great Soup Base. I love their beef noodle soup base and the texture of the noodles. It is a great restaurant.
The best beef noodle, period. I just wish they had Bay area locations. I always make time for a lunch whenever I'm in Vancouver.
FOOD. The food is excellent there especially the beef noodle soup, but there are not enough waiter or waitress to serve you coz there are always a crowd of people.
Lao Shan Dong is a popular chain Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup Restaurant in Taiwan, which has been in operation for over 50 years! Their Burnaby location has been around for quite some time now, as I recall Lao Shan Dong being in that exact location since I was in Gr.7! 4/5 stars To start off, I decided on one of their mixed cold meat platters. This was a small, but the portion size was quite large, especially for one person! The sauce they drizzled on top of the meat was a sweet, honeyed based soy sauce. The beef slices were very thinly sliced, but were very lean and rather tender. The pig ears were also very thinly sliced, which resulted in them lacking crunch, which was a bit disappointing. The meat platter also included beef tripe, which was was well marinated, and quite chewy. 3/5 stars I settled on a small #1 Beef Noodle. I normally hold a noodle house's #1 as being a reliable testament to the quality and authenticity of their dishes. This was indeed an authentic bowl of Taiwanese
The menu declares their beef noodle is worth driving across town for; that it is hard to find any this good, anywhere else. So I guess we were here not only for lunch, but to find if their tall claim held any weight. And for those wanting to see for themselves, be warned it is cash only here. Conveniently located in the complex across from Metrotown, the middle of three Asian cuisine focused restaurants, lined up in a row. With free parking available in the tightly spaced lot, just to the side of the building. Walking in for a weekday lunch, we saw a lot of traffic, though managed to grab a seat right away. Just a walk across from Metrotown, business must be decent. The setting was a flashback in time. With washed out maroon paint on walls and tiling of yellow, red, and a deep blue. Colours arranged in scattered patterns with tiles large and small. The same three colours repeated in protruding cut outs, unsymmetrical bottom lit waves set high along the walls. An odd assembly which real
I LOVE the beef in this dish and I NEVER like the beef in any beef noodle soup - I usually push it all into Mr's bowl but today, this night, I feel reluctant to give it up. The beef is super lean, very tender and there's little gristle to be found. I might just have to conveniently finish off the beef before Mr notices... The soup itself is very tasty as well - tremendous beef flavoring without being too salty, probably owing to the fact that they don't use MSG here. It could be a little spicier for a spicy option but I'm not too bothered by it. The noodles are a nice balance between chewy but soft and the mustard greens gives a nice hint of sour once in a while when you catch it between your teeth. This joins the top of our list for Taiwanese beef noodle soups for sure.
The soup was savory and had a prominent flavor from the pickled vegetables. I liked that the noodles were thicker here but as the meal progressed, the noodles became increasingly more soft because it was in the hot soup. The pieces of beef flank were on the lean side so they were a b
Up top Colleen tried out an order of their noodles with slice pork and mustard greens, its very light in terms of the taste itself. The broth was rather bland and the dish felt lacking. I wouldn't order this again since this ended up being my meal in the end.
I've been reading so much about Lao Shan Dong , and having recently been exposed to Taiwanese beef noodle soup , I jumped at the chance to try "LSD" when Chris offered to take me wherever I wanted for dinner. Located on the north side of Kingsway near Nel
My friend brought me to Lao Shan Dong (aka LSD) last night. It was my first actual Taiwanese Beef Noodle experience, and I'd say I was pleasantly surprised.
dre @ Kingsway & Nelson: I was recommended to eat at this place in Burnaby by 3 different people at separate instances, so was really looking forward to it. I don't think I've had Taiwanese beef noodles before. We tried 2 different types - the first is a dry noodle, where I mixed the sauce with the noodles. The second dish is a soup noodle, similar to the dry version. I thought the dry version was too oyster saucy, and the soup could be a little bit spicier. The beef was extremely tender and delicious! However, the noodles are the most memorable, as they are freshly pulled! I've never had such a texture like this before and I think I could probably eat a bowl of plain noodles. They were soooo good! Lewis ordered dumplings too because he said he hasn't been here in awhile and couldn't remember what the dumplings tasted like. They were okay haha Finally, Lewis taught me a new way to fold a chopstick stand by rolling the paper instead of folding :) Previous Categories: Beef, Chicken,
There's a small, somewhat humid spot on the corner of Kingsway and Nelson in Burnaby that puts out some fantastic food. For the past several years I've been visiting Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House and have developed a major affection for their Taiwan
Recently, we went out with Ana and Kay again for lunch, and we chose Lao Shan Dong noodle house because neither of them had been there before. Shane and I had eaten here many times because it's usually our pre-movie meal anytime we go to Metrotown to catc
I have seen this place many times as I headed to Metrotown, but never tried it. So finally I did. As the name suggested, it's a homemade noodle place which specialize in beef noodle. Ta Da, here it is... one hot bowl of spicy beef noodle soup. You get a c
I went to Lao Shan Dong noodle house the other day with Mabel. It's located at 4887 Kingsway in Burnaby, right across the street from Metrotown. I've been here a few times for lunch now and the place always fills up quickly. To be seated right away, I wou
Went for some TW Beef Noodles with Jeff and Victor a couple days before I was to leave to Toronto for work. Now I can't exactly remember the reason why, I just felt like going to LSD since it's been a while and I've actually never blogged about it. I orde
