So, Yan’s Garden has been on my list of places to try for a number of years (I suppose it’s partly because I used to watch “Wok with Yan” back in the 80’s). I’ve been hesitant to stop by here in the past mainly because parking always looked difficult here as the parking lot is generally always full.
We headed to Yan’s Garden early-Saturday morning for dim sum. Our last dining experience there was such a long time ago, that this experience was like going there for the very first time.
Service throughout our stay was great. Our server greeted us upon entering, escorted into the main dining room, and showed us to a centrally-located, large, round table. A menu (for ordering items directly from the kitchen) was provided, our tea order taken - and she was back right away with hots pots of tea and water. Service to our table via the food carts was timely, and very nicely-spaced, with ample time to look at selections of each cart, choose or not choose offerings, etc. And service ‘to’ the table - removing empty plates, acquiring drinking water, and such - right on the mark.
It was fun to see and experience food cart service once again — wow, the last time we were served dim sum dishes in this manner was sure several years ago. Based on this dining experience, this restaurant and its servers, sure know how to do it right!!
Food accepted from the carts, and ordered from the menu: carts: deep fried meat dumplings, steamed beef balls, steamed beef tendon, steamed chicken knees, steamed shrimp dumplings, baked egg custard tarts — menu: deep fried squid w/pepper. First impressions: good looking, very decent portion sizes.
The preparations were solid. We ordered a nice assortment of ‘familiar to us’ dishes (from dim sum experiences at a good many restaurants), and really enjoyed all of them — each arrived from kitchen to our table warm, flavourful, and tasty. Any particular ‘standouts’ — not really, if I had to choose, I would just be listing most everything we ordered once again!! But will give a little extra plug to the ‘beef balls’, ‘tendon’, and ‘chicken feet’ - they were sure some tasty!
Our dim sum dining experience at Yan’s Garden was fun, and we sure enjoyed what we saw, how we were treated, and the well-prepared food ordered and shared.
Came here for Dim Sum twice in the past month...good selection and good portions, the garlic pea tips are especially good, and so are the spareribs. Congee was well done as well. Seating can be a bit cramped but we are talking about a Chinese restaurant here! Will be coming back here instead of Grand Palace, which is a let down.
Pretty busy for dim sum on a Sunday. Dishes come on the push carts which is cool. Dim sum was good and one of the only places in the area I believe.
First time trying this place and I really enjoyed it. We were promptly greeted and sat down. The server quickly came over and started introducing himself and making food suggestions. I ordered 3 dishes, one consisting of Orange walnut pork, the second is steam cod and black bean sauce with tofu and third a vegetable dish. They were all really well made and the portion is quite sizable. Quality and quantity.
Prices are slightly above normal but not unreasonable for the quality of food that was served. Big screen tv on the walls so you can enjoy your food while watching tv is an added bonus.
Recommending this to anyone who likes southern style Cantonese/Chinese food
It gets really busy here, but it's a good place to go with family (especially if your family likes Chinese food). Like with most Chinese places, I found the food to be quite oily, but I was surprised with the vegetarian selection. Usually, it's completely nonexistent, but they actually had a few items, such as the honey walnut deep fried pumpkin and some stir fried plates.
I never had to wait more than 20 minutes for a table here this place is huge. Reasonably priced for dim sum with all your favorite dishes! About $45 for 3 people. My go to dim sum place in coquitlam!
Even at 11am on a Tuesday, the place was packed. They sat us quickly but service throughout dinner was lacking. Felt like the cart ladies kept skipping our table and would take forever to bring us something we asked, if they remembered at all. It felt like they were ignoring us. Dim sum was delicious but there wasn't much variety within the carts. We ended up ordering some items for our table, which was fine, but again, service made it difficult for us to get what we wanted.
Dim sum today was great. The har-gow were really good and the pork porridge with century eggs was yummy! And the stir fried pea leaves were awesome!!
Atmosphere 1/1
Busy Chinese restaurant with lots of tables crammed together - not too close though! They recently renovated so everything is all snazzy and new. I do miss their old tacky "Chinese mountain scene" window drapes though.
Service 0.5/1
I came here for dim sum and they are one of the only places I know for push cart. The food is quite fresh as turnover in this restaurant is crazy. They push cart ladies are very on the ball with getting you your stuff. Only complaint is that sometimes it's rushed and bam you have tons of food on the table and are still bombarded by more food offerings. If it's high time often your empty dishes may not get taken away until later too as the staff is too busy

Traditional old school dim sum. Love it. My favourites are the salted fried dumplings and shrimp/scallop dumplings. I always bring a variety of friends here and they can all find something they can eat and like. Tapioca pudding is a favourite for my groups
Price 1/1
So. Good. Seriously. You'll be feeling stuffed at $10-15 per meal. Might even have leftovers
Personal opinion 1/1
Best local Chinese food in the Lougheed area. I come here maybe once every month or two month to catch up with friends and family. They have push carts which is great if your friends don't speak or read Chinese. Never disappointed by Yans Garden
The daily soup was watered down.
Main meat courses tasted great; however, there were more vegetables than meat.
The mango pudding was great.
The food came out fast.
The waitresses don't speak english.
Decent restaurant
They recently renovated so the decor looks much better and fancier than before. What I love most is being able to watch hockey playoff games on their huge tv while eating decent chinese food. Dim sum is not good compared to richmond and service during lunchtime is spotty but I had great service for dinner with huge portions of food and ample tea refillings. Good variety of dishes and plenty of parking
The staff are very kind and the food tastes good.
Always enjoyable family dinner, dimsum pretty standard.
Tasty. Sure it's salty, sure some things are a bit sweet, but dude more is awesome!! not for your heart but certainly for your tummy! I love the honey coated bbq pork buns, egg tarts good, siew mai yum. I really do like this place for dim sum and dude the tapioca pudding is nice a steamy and crusty it just totally hits the spot. Negatives-parking sucks sucks sucks...good luck with that one
Service is excellent. Prices are reasonable. The spring rolls are divine.
Best Hot & Sour in Town. And I don't even like the stuff usually. However, the food is amazing and the hot and sour soup is bang on delicious.
On average we will either order in or eat in around once every two weeks, and although the service is no different from any other chinese restaurant you'll probably frequent in town, the food is superior. Love it.
Dim Sum restaurant in Lougheed Mall area?. My wife and I tried Yan's Garden just after they reopened in 2008 but were not impressed at that time with their dim sum, let alone Cantonese dinner choices. At that time, the dim sum was over steamed and soggy while traditional Cantonese dishes were unexciting. So since then, we've avoided this place and rather drive into Metrotown, Fraser Street between 41st and 43rd, and even Richmond looking for decent dim sum.
However, recently we returned to Yen's twice to have dim sum with my mother-in-law's distant relatives who live just south of Lougheed Mall. This older couple and their grown daughter from Hong Kong come regularly to Yen's for dim sum, sometimes two or three times a week - so the staff knows them well. As other reviewers have noted, the staff here can be quirky and not as friendly if you don't speak Chinese or are not a regular. (But this is typical of many Chinese restaurants: they cater sometimes better to "regulars"). But back to this review…
Dim sum has improved significantly since then, (we heard that the chefs has changed for the better), and are up to par with the better restaurants found in Richmond. The Prawn Dumplings ("har gaw") were plump and juicy with a translucent skin wrap that was not soggy. The Sesame Balls ("gin doi") were the size of a small orange with a crisp skin and not too greasy. Overall, to me Yen's is now a decent Dim Sum restaurant in Lougheed Mall area… if you can stand the wait for a table during busy times and servers who seem friendlier if they know you speak Chinese (I don't as a 3rd Gen Vancouverite, but my wife does fluently in both Cantonese and Mandarin…).
Next we will be back to try their Signature Dishes for dinner and see if it's worth a review.
Good price, Decent Dishes and Poor Services. This place is good to have a sunday bruch for dimsum. If they are more concerned about their sevices, which is I don't hope so, I might wait in the line longer than now.
This place is quirky and charming. The staff tend to be standoffish if you don't speak Chinese, but are quite friendly if you are a regular customer. The deep fried squid in peppery salt is outstanding, as are the scallop and tobiko steamed dumplings. If you go before 11am you get a 10% discount. The prices are reasonable at 3 to 5 dollars for most items. They also have Korean or Chinese movies or concert DVDs playing in the widescreen tv, and you may occassionslly see a shopping cart full of table cloths being wheeled by by server.
Yan’s Garden is a standard looking Chinese restaurant, stuck in an L-shaped strip mall. Tucked in beside a seedy looking tanning salon, it reminds me of the adage of not to judge a book by its cover.
If you like cheap and tasty dim sum, Yan's Garden is the place to go. If you like shrimp, it will be a bonus. It's a bit far for me (North Road and Lougheed Hwy), but once in a while, I'll make a trek out to Burnaby and have Dim Sum here. The place expand
The restaurant has a ‘Chinese Banquet’ feel, with large round tables and white tablecloths.
Food was generally good, but a bit pricey. However they do have generous portions. If you don't want to battle Richmond traffic and fight over parking, then definitely give Yan's Garden a try, other wise, you can certainly dine for less at Imperial Court ($13.99/lb, but do call and confirm).
