Review Sushi Giwa - Burnaby

Joey C
Did a pretty decent size order from here the other night. We did take out from this restaurant. Once we brought it back to the hotel there was a pretty major component missing in out order. It wasn't any rolls but it there was no Soy Sauce! How do you miss soy sauce?? I called back and there no we will get someone to bring it out. It was just come back. Easy if it was not that far away. Anyways poor customer service in my opinion. I guess note to self always look over a take out order and make sure there is nothing missing. The sushi was not very good. We ordered the Maki Tray C (98 pcs). Majority of the tray is cook for your information. The smoked salmon did not taste fresh. Tasted like it was a week old. The spicy salmon roll in the tray was just basically drenched in hot sauce. Instead of having the salmon drenched In it the entire outer roll was. Most of the rolls were very saucy just over powered the sushi. We also ordered The Tobiko Hotate Oshi and the Wild Salmon Sushi. It had too much pepper it just over powered everything. All I could taste was black pepper. The Salad was very good. They dressing was well balanced and was pretty much the only thing that was done right. Aside from the Edamame and Chicken Karaage which was decent. I would not order from here again. Yes the soy sauce miss was a big deal for me. Like not sure if they were being cheap but note to the restaurant if you are taking out there is a chance your customer is not from here. So just give every take order soy sauce. But overall the sushi quality in my opinion is not anywhere near Vancouvers level. There are tons of other Sushi places out there. Its not like its the only place in town.

ありがとう !! Dope sushi and solid joint! I'd happily come here often after a sweet visit to this joint. They make some rad sushi which was a delight to chow down on and grub there for lunch today. Nice fat and stuffed rolls with fresh tasting ingredients at good value. We got a Vegetable Combo with Dynamite Roll and Inari Roll which was comfortably enough between two people for lunch. I normally don't opt for the vegetarian Combo as the Vegetable rolls are boring but theirs were awesome! Fantastic menu of Japanese classics for hot/cold as well as vegetarian. Wakame Salad was a bit too dosed in sauce and Miso Soup 味噌汁 a tad salty. Their Wasabi is also perfect, really fresh and vibrant. Decor is really cool inside, I dig their makeshift cherry blossoms. Staff are also super friendly and kind. It'd be awesome if they could offered brown/black rice alternatives and if the warm sushi (example Yam Tempura) arrived when warn would be awesome and elevate this to a 5 star review for me. アダム Support local businesses!

Good price for the quality and variety of sushi!🍣 This is a solid neighborhood sushi location in North Burnaby. I've been coming here a lot more often ever since my old go to have significantly downgraded in quality since 2020. Giwa have sustained the good quality of traditional maki rolls, standard sashimi and special fancy rolls. Also the interior is really nicely designed, bright and warm making it feel welcoming. Some personal favourites: spicy salmon sashimi, negitoro roll, Alaska roll, chopped scalloped roll, any aburi sushi.
Serena
Nice neighborhood sushi joint, that will definitely be added to one of my go-to's! Decor inside was nice, portions were pretty good, and the sushi was tasty.

Awesome customer service, great sushi served fast! Nothing to complain about. They also have parking spots. We will definitely come back.

This is a go to sushi restaurant with my family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦. It is spacious. Quality sushi 🍣 with reasonable price. Their bento box 🍱 is massive and can fill you with all the deliciousness yummmmmmmm 🤤😋🤤

We always order take-out and every time it is excellent! They have creative and tasty vegan options available. Price point and portion sizes are fair. The staff are pretty friendly. This place is a treat.

Ordered take out, we got the veggie box, customized dynamite roll, and bulgogi!!! That's right they have a selection of Korean food as well as excellent sushi and other Japanese dishes! The staff was friendly and kind! We'll definitely order from there again!

Impressive dining experience! We went into Sushi Giwa not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised by the delicious food and affordable prices. Recommend all their appetizers, rolls, and lunch boxes.
Anindita
Kind of pricey, but good sushi. Opted for a takeout, never dined here. Very warm staff, and their giant rolls are a feast in itself! Tried the Canucks roll & loved it!

Waaay better than Sushi Town down the street!! The food quality is outstanding and I especially love their cones and lunch boxes. Will visit here more often from now on.

Met a good friend of mine here for lunch and she told me this is her favourite restaurant. I could understand why this place is her favourite as the food is so fresh and beautifully presented. I highly recommend everyone to try their Giwa Tower Sashimi and Yummy Yummy Roll you'll thank me later! When we were there it was quite busy but our server was attentive and had a friendly smile on her face so that made the experience even better :)

Their food was fine before summer, but right now in extreme heat I feel as if their kitchen/ingredients aren't so clean/fresh. I'm not 100% sure on this, but the only food I had before I started vomiting, feeling nauseous, chills and having diarrhea was the chicken katsu...

Really impressed by Sushi Giwa. The prices are reasonable and the special rolls and sashimi are delicious and fresh with excellent portions. They also offer today's specials that are really good too. I can't believe how picky some reviewers are considering the great deal they're getting. At this price and quality, I'd say this is one of the best sushi restaurants in Burnaby!
JSpider
Fantastic value for their lunch sets and very pleasant service! The restaurant has plenty of space and the food is high quality and tasty. I eat here quite often these days and they're consistently good. Plenty of free parking outside and very close to transit.

Don't mean to judge the latest reviews but really, it was a major disappointment!! Really regret giving them a try... I understand we all have different standards of sushi but if your quality is way below that of Sushi Garden and Sushi Town in North Bby, you are not gonna survive for very long!

Long story short, rolls were simply no good... ingredients and flavours were just off!! I know I can't expect Korean sushi to be like authentic Japanese but still... you gotta be able to deliver decent quality!

If there's one positive thing to say, one server was very friendly while the other didn't care much.

Had to go to Burnaby for work and went to Sushi Giwa for the first time in a few months. What immediately stood out to me was the new menu they just started. The new lunch deals are super affordable and I was amazed by the amount of food that came out. I got Box A for 8.95 and it had plenty of tempura, chicken (or beef) teriyaki, california roll, salad, sunomono, and gyoza. I stuffed myself with so much good food and my colleague said her Giwa Roll and Awesome Roll tasted delicious too. Looks like Sushi Giwa has really taken it up a notch and become the best in the city!

Food is really inexpensive and the rolls are great! I always get the Crazy Boy Roll when I visit. Interior is beautifully decorated and the service is friendly.

I ordered the assorted sushi combo. When I picked up my order, I realized that instead of amaebi, they gave me another piece of salmon sushi, so I had 2 pieces of salmon sushi instead of 1 salmon 1 amaebi. One piece of salmon clearly has skin on it. I called the restaurant and asked about this. They said that the second piece (the one with skin) is supposed to be salmon belly. They never told me if they were out of amaebi when I ordered or told me when I picked up. I would have been fine with a substitute if they had asked me about it and given me a choice. I asked them why is there no amaebi and why is there a piece of skin on the salmon. They didn't answer the question and simply told me there was nothing they can do. The rest of my food was average, nothing special. Definitely will not visit ever again.

We've been going here for a while as it's in the neighborhood and an easy fix for takeout sushi. We would often overlook things like missed items in takeout orders, because the food was good - but better yet, the price was good for takeaway sushi. Not great, but good enough.

Cut to tonight, it appears new management has taken over Sushi Giwa, and altered the menu. We tried to order chicken karaage and were told it wasn't available anymore. We asked for an appetizer tempura instead, and were told this was no longer on the menu also. So management has not only removed popular items from the menu, they've added a bunch of fancy sushi rolls, and jacked up prices on all of the menu, across the board. What used to cost $30 for a dinner for two, is now closer to $40 and you get a lot less food. So I'm done with Sushi Giwa. This neighborhood has way too many sushi restaurants as it is - I'll be finding another one as my go-to from now on. I'm guessing I won't be alone.

I have never been so compelled to write a review but I am still so upset with my lackluster dinner (from 2 days ago now) that I must.
There is very recently new management and it is now a terrible value restaurant. Allow me to explain: giant spicy tuna roll (my favorite roll of all time, from any sushi restaurant) that used to be $6 is now $12, the unagi Don that used to be $11 is now $20, and the cream vegetable roll that used to be $4 is now $7. Imagine my surprise when I show to pick up my order and my bill was near $80 when I expected maybe $50. Additionally, I am not exaggerating when I say, in no universe of life does the quality garner a 100% increase in price - the fish doesn't seem any fresher, the portions have become smaller, if anything, and recipes have changed (not necessarily for the better, eg. giant spicy tuna roll). At least they've had the decency to change their outdated pricing online since I last ordered.
Moral of the story: avoid this place; there are much better options available out there that aren't trying so damn hard to steal your money.
Mealtime
Great place to dine out with family. The ambiance is nice with a beautiful flower tree indoors and the food is just awesome. We stuffed our stomaches with the Dinner for Two Combo and the Unagi Don while not going over our budget. My family and I would definitely consider returning here regularly.

After working our way through a chocolate filled fest we were hankering for something more solid, something more healthier, and our stomachs brought us to sushi. This location was chosen as it was near the home of one of my companions, and she vouched for it being a stand up place. Yet was honest enough to say that it wasn’t the best, but a “solid B” instead. Her gauge is based on how good a sushi restaurant’s real crab is, and here it was some of the better. And she should know, given that she is gluten intolerant, and the need for her to find substitutions in all she eats, is key in her meals. Apparently imitation crab contains gluten. So for her to say that they were good, there was no need for me to believe otherwise.

Sushi Giwa is relatively close to my old high school, but Sushi Town is usually my go-to sushi place in the area so I’ve only been to Sushi Giwa twice. They actually have 2 locations, one further down Hastings so don’t get them mixed up!. The interior is nice, quite roomy and there were pretty Sakura trees as decoration. They were able to accommodate 8 of us and I believe charged no gratuity fees.

Wanted to go to lunch at this regular spot for us. After walking in with a friend of ours we were greeted with the normal greeting while walking in. This was a regular place for us so we were astonished to find that actually one of the waitresses was a rude woman. Her name is Christine & after walking in she in front of us started talking Rudley about us & laughed. I noticed right away & of course confronted her, she then began to explain she was talking about coffee so I rolled my eyes & told her not to speak of me again. The dumb lady needs to realize this is Canada & people speak many different languages out here & for her to speak poorly of us & think she can get away with it is astonishing. Never met someone so rude before to judge customers as soon as we walk in. Never coming here again I'm shocked.

Bought a medium party platter & bulgogi, the bulgogi was really well done, lots of veggies and the right amount of sauce. The sushi was also pretty good, not the best but definitely one of the better sushi places around North burnaby

would visit again

Ordered for pickup, was told it would take 10-15 minutes. So I went there in 15 and was told it would take a moment. Took a seat and waited another 20 minutes. Finally a different server from the one that rang it in the register asked me if I was waiting for pickup. And... It had already been sitting ready for 10 minutes. No apology from anyone.

The sushi itself is just average. I ordered mostly nigiri sushi. Rice is clumpy and on the verge of being dry. Fish is decent, notably the mackerel, but lacking bite. Not coming back.

A reopened restaurant. The inside is spacious and inviting. The service was excellent, didn't need to ask for refill. The susshi was excellent and creative. Ordered the Awesome roll, Crunch Crunch roll and Spicy Salmon Sashimi - only complaint about the sashimi was the salmon needed to be thawed but the spicy level was good. Will visit again.

Could not stop running to the bathroom and sit down and let it run, a few times for hours, after eating here. Nuf said. Though I'm forced to do 140 charterers. Here you go.

Sushi Giwa is affordable and like some other restaurants on Hastings, offers up large portions.

We had several rolls and donburis and noticed a trend - everything is heavily sauced. Whether it be a Mango Paradise Roll or a Spicy Salmon Don, there is a lot of sauce.

Also, the sushi rice in the donburis we had was hot which isn't a particularly good combo with sashimi.

While they have their flaws, the food was still enjoyable for us. I personally don't mind saucy food, but I can see how other people can be turned off by it.

We didn't notice the same issues with the sashimi as other patrons did so maybe they had fixed whatever was causing the problem.

PROS
+ Cheap Cheap Cheap
+ Friendly service

CONS
- Poor quality sashimi and sushi
- Sushi rice was pretty bad..
- Spicy salmon sashimi was not freshly made

RATING
Food 2.0/5.0
Ambience 3.5/5.0
Service 4.0/5.0
Price $
Food is not too bad considering its cheap price. The service and ambience are pretty good too. But I'm not sure if I want to come back here... The sushi rice was uncooked and not seasoned very well. Spicy salmon sashimi was not freshly made so the salmon was lacking its firm texture but rather somewhat loose.. Also, hamachi was very fishy explaining its way-too-cheap price. It lacked a typical burgundy colour on a sashimi slice, and also toro didn't taste good at all. Toro was not fatty but it was more like a regular tuna with a bit of fat part. Obviously, this place is worth your buck if you are on a tight budget but otherwise, it is not a good place to have good quality food.
Alpaca Lunch
Sushi Giwa is Korean run, but unlike other Korean run Japanese restaurants, they offer a small selection of Korean foodstuff as well. The restaurant was relatively quiet despite it being peak hours for dinner. The waitress greeted us and brought us to our table promptly. The smoked salmon in the smoked salmon cream cheese roll was tasty and combined well with the imitation crab meat, cream cheese and julienned cucumber. However, being accustomed to the smoked salmon cream cheese roll at Sushi Town, I felt like it was missing that hint of sweetness from the red bell pepper. The rice was relatively sticky and a bit on the soft side. The roll came with a drizzle of mayo sauce which I felt was unnecessary as the roll was creamy and flavourful enough on its own. The hamachi in the negihama roll was not the freshest and I could taste the fishiness despite the generous amount of green onion in the roll (even after dousing it in wasabi and soy sauce).

Terrible service and terrible food. Went to this place for the 5th time and they changed their hours of operation. Hostess told us "no, we never changed hours" and escorted us to the door. I regret having ever spent a dime there. Also, sushi is cheap and the equivalent of fast food. If you want Americanized cheap sushi and terrible service, Giwa is for you. I'll never return.

Hello friends! I was craving Korean food after Grayson and I’s workout the other day but there wasn’t any Korean restaurants in the area so I opted to go to Sushi Giwa since I knew they had a few Korean menu options there. Sushi Giwa probably wouldn’t have the best Korean food out there but I was working with what we had.

Average Man's Review. What's Good: their Unagi is amazing, and their Unagi don comes with quite a bit of it a for a good price
their salmon sashimi from the few times I've tried it is buttery and delicious
they have some unique rolls that are fairly good

What's meh: their service in-restaurat is inconsistent
some of their servers don't speak amazing english
their yam tempura and rolls are definitely meh

What's bad: My friend claims to have had a bad piece of unagi from them once
they are more expensive than my old regular place (hong sushi)

rating: 4.5/5 -- my new go-to sushi place. when ordering for pickup they are incredibly quick and if you know what to buy, they are top notch.

They advertise hours they don't stick to. Working night shift I decided that I was going to place an order for pickup on a Thursday night. I had called at 9pm to confirm that they would be open late since they advertise that they are open until midnight from Thursday to Saturday.
The lady who answered said that they would be open and it wouldn't be a problem.
I called again at 11pm to place my order and the call went to a voicemail for a mobile phone.
Thinking that they forgot to unforward their phone line, I drove to their restaurant at 11:15pm to find that they had closed!!!
This not only affected my lunch, but also three of my coworkers who decided to order from them as well.
If you advertise that you will be open at a certain time, you had better be open for service or you will lose customers based off of such an experience.
I can't rate the food since I haven't been able to order from them, and it's pretty clear that I never will.
Terrible

**edit**
I should mention that this was the second time that I tried to order from them late at night. I brushed off the first experience as possibly calling the wrong number since the person who picked up didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I asked that I wanted to place an order. That's why I called earlier to confirm I had the right place this time.

Good food, good prices.. Have been here several times since they have opened and have always had good food and good service. The Burnaby Roll is my new favorite with a good serving of avocado and prawn on the top of California rolls. The wait staff is super nice and eager to please. Give it a try!

Not sure how I feel about this place. I read the two reviews below and decided to go for takeout with some of my staple items -spicy chopped scallop roll and tuna and salmon sashimi. I arrived 15 minutes after my order and it was already waiting for me, so perhaps the other reviewer visited them on a bad day. I did notice that another customer had to bring her change back up as the cashier had given her incorrect change. After numerous "sorry!"'s she fixed it and the customer didn't seem too upset.

It wasn't that busy when I was in there on Sunday afternoon, so that was kind of odd. When I got home, I discovered that the spicy chopped scallop roll was the kind where they squirt the spicy sauce on top, not the kind where it's mixed in with the chopped scallop. Personally I like the second kind better because it shows they've put more effort into it. I could have just put spicy sauce on it myself! The rolls were soggy and reminiscent of Sushi Town rolls -where I have stopped ordering them because it's impossible to pick up.

The biggest problem was that I found two fish bones in the salmon and tuna sashimi order. Not enough attention was placed on picking the bones out so that bothers me. Needless to say, I think I may be back but will give them a couple more weeks of settling in before I return.

Sushi Giwa, is just like a fish out of water.. It simply doesn't belong. There are simple things for a restaurant to be successful, service and food. Sushi Giwa quite literally doesn't know how to serve the people that come in the door. Albiet Sushi Giwa just opened, and growing pains are part of the business, however the service I received on both occasions was inexcusable.

My first time there was a take out order. I made my order and was told to pick it up in 20 minutes. I arrived 20 minutes later to get my order, what occurred next was almost comical. I said my name and I was here for pickup. The girl at the desk said my name and then left. She left me alone at the desk for 20 minutes. Time continued to tick by, and perhaps after 30 minutes of waiting at the desk I was presented my food. There was no checking on me, no explanation for the wait. On top of this I was also informed that they couldn't fill my Sockeye Salmon Nigiri order, because they didn't have it. This is something I should have been told while ordering, but I wasn't, so after my meal I was still hungry. I equated it to growing pains, and thought I'd give them another chance.

Chance two was last night. My fiance and I decided to dine inside the restaurant. We arrived and were seated right away, a great notion, however our experience ended there. We noticed many tables with menus, and didn't think of anything at the time. We waited and waited, as did other people. A table was sat after us, and they were actually served before us, we continued to wait. We waited for 30 minutes, no server, no service. This is inexcusable. We got up and left, at this time the waiting area was packed. We advised the potential customers that the wait will never end, and told them that we waited 30 minutes for our server and got nothing. We left and a few other people followed.

It is clear that Sushi Giwa does not have a serving staff with any experience or any leadership. That is why Sushi Giwa is like a fish out of water.

Sooooo good...you must go here now!. This place opened up this week, have been watching them renovate the property and make the whole area look amazing including the inside of the restaurant, we decided to order by phone and pick up, we went in and the whole staff was so friendly and greeted us in Japanese "hello" the price of the food was so good....and the taste was the best Japanese sushi I've had in soooo long....when we left they all said good bye as well, we will be back for sure! welcome to the neighborhood Sushi Giwa!
Raymond's Sushi Adventures
The interior decor was a clean modern design, and I liked the addition of the artificial white blossoming trees. Compared to the bustling Sushi Town nearby, it has a more relaxed atmosphere and more friendly service. Sushi Giwa's menu is also more extensive and the seating arrangements are spaced out quite comfortably. The restaurant is Korean-operated, and there is a $9.99 specials menu consisting of several Korean dishes, such as Japchae, Bulgogi, etc.

Sushi Giwa is the newest Japanese restaurant that has popped up in North Burnaby. As with most Japanese restaurants in this area, Sushi Giwa is Korean owned but unlike most Japanese restaurants, they also offer Korean dishes (japchae, fried flatfish, albap) in the form of $9.99 specials...
MISS VANCOUVER PIGGY
Formerly know as Domenico's Italian along Hastings Street in North Burnaby, is now a newly renovated Korean operated Japanese restaurant. Does North Burnaby need another Japanese restaurant? Well, yes and no. Despite that there are plenty of Japanese restaurants (good, average and bad) in the area, how many are worth revisiting that is not based on convenience? When we pulled up to the front, I loved the balloon arch along with the balloon flowers! This is definitely something different compared to the usual bouquets of flower that are left outside during restaurant grand openings. As for the interior, there are booth seating arrangements along the walls and the restaurant does not look cramped. In addition, there are a couple of faux trees. From what I remember, the Sushi Mori franchise restaurants were the first to have faux trees. CRISPY MACKEREL, "Crispy flat fish with rice, served with salad and miso soup" ($9.99). Rating: 2.5/5. Since Sushi Giwa is Korean operated, the restaurant offers one page of Korean cuisine dishes. When the mackerel arrived, I was disappointed that the fish is deep fried rather than grilled, despite that the menu shows a grilled mackerel and that most of the time it is grilled. The fish is lightly battered and has a light crispiness, while also exhibiting moist and flaky meat. SOFT SHELL CRAB ($8.50). Rating: 4/5. The soft shell crab is practically perfect. There is a very light batter along with a soft crisp exterior, and tastes juicy. Juicy, not moist. Moreover, the soft shell crab is also cut into manageable pieces which makes it easier to eat. The tempura is on the saltier side though and tastes noticeably very salty. MISO SOUP ($1.25). Rating: 2.5/5. The miso soup is included with the crispy mackerel, but we had to request for it because the staff forgot. Served at a luke warm temperature, there is a light miso flavour without tasting salty. The soup does not include tofu though. DELUXE ASSORTED SASHIMI ($19.95). Rating: 3.5/5. The
