Review Broken Rice Restaurant - Burnaby

Jeff Shay
We went on a Sunday night kinda last minute. We got there about 730pm and they close at 9, with last call at 830. Lots of street parking. We walked in the restaurant was dimly lit and we were the only table. They sat me and my girlfriend by the window. Service was good. Family operated, one brother in the front the other in the kitchen. Hot tea to the table and real menus. The menu is quite big and my girlfriend who is Vietnamese said all the dishes are legit. We ordered beef carpaccio, pork belly sliders, bhan xeo, and a beef on rice dish. The beef was so tender. Cooked perfectly. All the dishes were great, with the pork belly sliders a little less great. Price point $$, portions were good size. Would go back. Location is good for family, dates, or business lunch.

Disappointed experience. They take your order by verbal memorization. Impressive when it’s done right, but terrible when half an hour later they tell you the order got messed up, then try to recall what you ordered only to tell you the wrong thing (no wonder my order was messed up). Ordered beef carpaccio (bland, needed more acidity like other popular pho restaurants). Duck sliders (needed some more sauce or richness to counter bland bun), Saigon crepe (again, mediocre at best), and Spicy Hue Lemongrass pho (lemon grass taste was there but it was missing a rich broth). The decor is interesting, like they took over an old Greek restaurant (I’m not sure of their history). It’s dimly lit in a not so appealing way. We sat window side and seemed like we were dining under emergency lighting and was so happy when the street light outside came on. If you’re gonna set the dim lighting, you gotta set the mood too! Off point. Would unfortunately not return and do not recommend.

A good place to bring your date as the resto gives off a fancy vibe (dim lights+cutleries folded in those hotel dinner cloth napkins) unlike other Vietnamese restos. Although pricier than other viet places, their service and food are great👍🏻 I’ll come back again to try more food items!

So good! I had the Chicken & Prawn Brochette. It was so fresh and flavourful. A giant plate of food for a reasonable price, that doesn’t leave you feeling heavy afterwards. I highly recommend.

I love the vegetarian bun meal here, it's so delicious. Their spring rolls are the closest I've found to the legendary now closed Bau Chau's and that's a treat! Other veggie options are available as well which is very nice, not always available in Vietnamese restaurants. My husband and friends have enjoyed every meat meal as well especially the lemon grass beef and the house bun. Salad rolls are solid too and the food is plentiful, which is worth the more pricey meals (but everything is going up in price so to be expected!).

a nice place great ambience. the old style tables and chairs are a nice touch. We had the Duck Confi Boa and those were really good. the star of the meal was the pork belly and shrimp broken rice. That was really good. Good food and good service.

My family and I found this place by chance while walking in the area. We have dined in a few times, and have ordered delivery thru Uber too. They have something for everyone one, even those in the family who don't eat pho soup. They have amazing sliders that come in duck or pork belly... they're small but pack full of flavour. They place and staff are nice and I'm happy to support them.

Burnabys best and brightest! Don't believe the "$$" rating, this is one of the best vietnamese restaurants within Van I have grubbed at in a LONG time and it's incredible value for money! First, the restaurant is extremely lovely inside with fantastic authentic grass roots decor, a very nice cozy, relaxed and laid-back vibe with a nice community and family orientated feel. The staff are extremely talented, extremely friendly and very helpful - they make awesome yum food!! The menu is precise and accurate, nails all the best Vietnamese cuisine and caters very evenly for veggies. We started on the Gỏi cuốn (Vietnamese Fresh Shrimp Salad Rolls) in which we kept the shrimp as pescaterians. The peanut sauce was absolutely incredible, so delicious and the rolls are beautifuly presented, absolutely stuffed with incredible tasting flavors. We then both tucked into a Bún Chả Giò Chay (Vegetarian Vermicelli) which is my new favorite place to eat this dish. A huge plentiful portion and a great balance of refreshing salad with noodles oozing in spicy soy and fish sauce, but some huge crispy spring roll and tofu squares tucked inside. AWESOME!! This was huge in which my wife had to take some home in a doggy bag. I topped off this fantastic dining experience with a Slow Drip Vietnamese Iced Coffee which was absolutely incredibly delicious. It's so rad. You get to watch it Drip during the course of you eating your main dishes and finishes in the perfect time your tastebuds are craving sweetness at the end, especially in this current heatwave! It was the perfect delicious balance of sweet milk with bitter but delicious authentic coffee. Next time I'm trying the Cold Red Bean Dessert for sure, that sounds rad!! Love this place and the staff. Support local!

Brokenrice Vietnamese Restaurant located in Burnaby Heights serves up contemporary Vietnamese cuisine. They take classic dishes and transform it with modern cooking techniques while incorporating local and sustainable ingredients. It’s been a staple in the neighbourhood and I revisited last month to see if it was as good as I remember from years ago.

Video review on youtube: vancity food crew brokenrice vietnamese restaurant
.
I went to this place because of a recommendation from a friend. Its good Vietnamese food if you live in the area, but its far for me personally. I had the lemongrass chicken on rice, which was juicy and plentiful. The springroll was above average but must be purchased on the side for an extra charge. If you are close by then its a good choice, go for dinner for more options to choose from.

Not the best food, although it was good. Not memorable or anything, and neither was the staff very welcoming. Won’t come back specifically for anything, but this is one of the few places around Burnaby that have a veggie broth!

I rarely ever crave Vietnamese food because Japanese food tends to get the better of me a majority of the time. The last time I had it was actually about a month ago at Paradise. But the girls and I decided to have our annual gift exchange at Broken Rice this year so I ended up having Vietnamese food twice in the span of a month which is a rare occurence for me

Spring rolls, $7.50: Sangria, Cocoa, and I shared the spring rolls which came with minced pork, taro root, mushrooms, and more. They came very crunchy- piping hot and fresh!House pho, $9.95: Cocoa and I both had the house pho, which was delicious! It came with a decent amount of rare beef, brisket, and beef balls. The broth was perfect and not too salty.Grilled beef short ribs,

Came on a Friday night and it was surprisingly busy. Fortunately we had a reservation for a table of 5. The food came slowly probably because the kitchen was busy with the crowd. We found the food all have a hint of Chinese style even though they are Vietnamese food.

This is a hidden gem in the Burnaby Heights area. There are not too many Vietnamese restaurants that have a variety of interesting dishes other than the usual pho. This is a quiet restaurant which is great to meet for a catch-up lunch or dinner with friends. The service is attentive and fast. The best items on the menu are the salad rolls, which are generous in size and tastes fresh as well as being nicely presented, and the butter jalapeno basil chicken wings which are fabulous and crispy. Surprisingly, the pho is quite average in taste and a bit bland and watery.

The only thing I would recommend is having some pictures on the menu because I wasn't sure what the items were based on just the minimal descriptions alone.

Best deep fried rolls I've ever had. The pho is really good, too. Polite and quick workers with a nice looking establishment. My go-to Vietnamese restaurant.
Chunky
Friendly staff and good quality ingredients. The favour is was tasty and well portioned. The highlight is the quality of the meat used and the amount given. When compared to the majority of other viet places it seems like this restaurant has better quality. That being said the price also reflects this. Overall very satisfied with the experience. Will definitely revisit.

Ordered Green Papaya Salad, Cassava Fries and Saigon Beef Stew Noodles. Everything was really fantastic. Its reasonably priced, substantial portion and bold flavours. I'm not a huge fan of spicy food and I found that the salad was just right for me. That being said some may think it's not spicy enough compared to other papaya salads.
Cassava fries could use a little more seasoning, but its still very delicious. Texture is like a tougher taro with a less starch taste than potatoes. Highlight was the beef stew that was absolutely perfect in flavour. Hearty beef flavour with a slight tang. Noodles weren't overcooked and sat well in the lovely light savory broth.

Service was great. Met the female owner of the place. Wonderful lady who was super down to earth and humorous. Definitely coming back :)

Came here for dinner with my BF, and at first sight the place looked appealing. The menu wasn't as extensive as most Viet restaurants, and it was pricey.

Nevertheless, we placed an order of spring rolls and 2 house pho's. The spring rolls were probably the best I've ever had, absolutely delish!

Now moving on to the soups, they were mediocre at best. The broth lacked major flavour, and that was after Us adding all the fixings (basil, lime, jalepeno and Sriracha).

Will we go again? Probably not considering when you go for pho, you go for the soup and flavour.

Went here for lunch, to start.. service was a little slow and the place wasn't even busy. The food was yummy, although nothing outstanding, just a little disappointed that they don't serve lemongrass porkchops like most of the vietnamese restaurants, but they do have grilled porkchops with bbq glaze and it was good. also, me and my friend were looking forward to their dessert as their list and descriptions looks tempting, but we were told that they don't serve desserts at lunch time. odd, what a let down! ..

luckily i went here instead of chad thai since there are no table available when we came in, suggested the broken rice to a group of friends and so we came in, sat down, i eventually ordered the shrimp coconut cake if i'm not mistaken and a bowl of pho, while my friends ordered the broken rice with lemongrass chicken.

The cake it's interesting, they have the crunchyness at top with shrimp, ebi and green onion if i'm not mistaken and savoury seafood top, and the bottom is coconut cake which gives a sweet bottom. overall my friends enjoyed it, the presentation of the item is very very mouth watering and made me curious. as for the taste, i would say it's definitely okay, it didn't really surprise me, it's not that super good, just okay.

as for the pho noodle the soup base is not as savoury, for some reason i find somewhat similar to an older stock/soup base type of flavor where there's not much depth in the taste. the rice noodle were okay. the pho in general is okay.

as for the lemongrass chicken and broken rice so far are the best out of all 3. juicy/tender/well flavored

as for the price it's a little bit more pricy but still okay. but as for the taste i would still prefer to go some other places. overall i wouldn't recommend this place, would i go back? hmmmm most likely not. the food is okay, but not memorable and didn't entice me to come back.

yummy!went for a birthday party so I got to try a few things. I ordered a lemongrass chicken rice. size was good n it was tasty. tried a bit of my dad's curry chicken, quite spicy but it's so so good! also order the duck slider n the spring roll. both very good. will definitely come again!

It's been a while since my first and only visit here, but I recall the frog legs being quite delicious! My fiance and I had just arrived back from a trip to Portland where we had tried (amazing) frog legs at French restaurant Le Bistro Montage, and these were just as good.

Broken Rice is a western vietnamese/Cambodian restaurant. It's definitely not fusion food because it's still predominantly still very Asian. The presentation for the food is very western. So is the price.

I decided to check out this restaurant because of the different selection of appetizers it offered and I was quite satisfied with the number of selection but I was a little disappointed on the service that night. The wait staff was slow and forgot our order. Other tables began receiving their orders before us and we ordered before them. We ordered deep fried chicken wings and beef capacciuo to start, and house special pho and lemon grass chicken for our main. None of those items required a lot of time to make but yet we waited for a long time for the order to arrive. I had to remind the wait staff to check on our order.

I had no complaints about the lemon grass chicken. Tasted like every other restaurant. The pho broth was a little light tasting compared to the typical bowl from another restaurant. It felt like it was missing some depth in flavour. The wings and the beef capacciuo tasted like cheap knock offs of Phnom Penh's chicken wings and butter beef.

Would I go back? Yes, because it's close and it's one of the few vietnamese/Cambodian restaurants that offer a wide variety. There were a couple of other dishes that looked interesting that I didn't tried yet. So im interested to see what they taste like.
Penny And Rusty
They stuff the tender chicken meat (thigh I think) with minced curried chicken and serve it with onions, taro chunks, panko-covered broken rice balls, lotus root chips, yam threads, and chili oil in a curry sauce with a side of steamed rice. I really enjoyed how all of the textures mixed with each other in this dish, let alone the tender chicken pieces.

Delicious Viet food. Love it here! There's more to viet food than Pho! Must try their garlic butter wings and frog legs. Yesss! Frog legs. You will not regret it! Their viet frappe is so rich and hits the spot!

Walking in, we knew this was not your typical Vietnamese restaurant, it felt very modern and westernized. So we concluded we should order special items over your typical Phở. xD We chose Uncle Hing's Chicken Wings ($6.95) with Garlic Butter as our first appie. This was fresh: crispy outside and juicy inside. the butter went well and enhanced the flavors of the wings. Even GirlNextDoor had the chicken skin (she normally doesn't eat it!).

Good food COLD restaurant. My husband and I have eaten here often and tried many of the dishes on the menu. They are all excellent. We were there in Jan. and it was cold outside and in the restaurant. It didn't help that a couple who were walking their dog decided to sit outside and have a beer so the waiter was opening the front door a lot, but it was too cold inside and because of that we will not be going back untill the weather changes. This is really a shame because I love the food here.

New Year's Eve ruined. It was a start of a beautiful new year's eve. Me and my family decided to go to Broken Rice for a nice vietnamese dinner. I asked the server who I believe is the owner(since I've been there a couple of times) about this interesting dish that I've seen being served before she rudely commented that they are not a Thai restaurant. She was rude and had an obnoxious demeanour as she said that. I figured she must be tired since we did get there about an hour and half before their closing time. She rushed us to order our food and I was considerate about the time constraint since it is New year's eve. We asked for hot sauce for more than one time and she mumbled something in Vietnamese and gave me a stink eye. This place is not properly heated and they have two heater fans, she proceeded to turn off the heater close by my table and at this point the restaurant was freezing. Her behaviour ruined the whole night for me and my family and I will not be returning to this "establishment" again. I would rather suggest going to a typical Vietnamese restaurant where the food is cheaper and the service won't disappoint you.

Love it!. I have lived in Vietnam and Thailand and so have eaten a lot of Asian food. Never had a bad meal there... our family goes often. Fair prices, fresh tasty food and polite service!

I would come again. I can't remember where or when but I had heard good things about this spot. We were in the neighbourhood and meant to eat at another spot but didn't know they were closed on weekends. So we ended up here. I had the vermicelli noodle bowl with spring roll and a meat (can't remember, probably pork, maybe chicken) on skewers. The skewer was quite unique in that when you unravel it, it's kind of twisted or twirled. It's hard to explain but it was very tasty.

Good value. The waiter we usually get is always laid back and pleasant. I love the lime soda
and they are the best spring rolls I've ever had ! We eat here at least once a month. It hasn't failed us yet.

Not good. Was just here for dinner, service was terrible. Menu wasn't brought till asked, had to ask 2 different people for ice waters. Lady was unpleasant and kept ignoring us and was being very rude. Normally I don't mind that it's more pricey compared to other viet places, however, food isn't as good as it was before. Wait was wayy to long. Would never visit this restaurant again. Definitely would not recommend.

J.b. This is one of my favorate restaurants. we try to go once a week.
the atmosphere is very nice, and the prices are very good, this is more of a high end Vietnamese restaurant. I dont know what some people are complaining about the price!. This isn't a PHO' joint!.. its a proper place to go eat. nice and cleen, and friendly staff. and quality food!..
I realy like the clay pot chicken, or the beef shank, with a side of spring rolls. they also have a great avacado shake. give them a try, *****

Excellent! vegetarian friendly and delicious!

Broken expectations. Heard pretty good things about this place, but we were both disappointed. We thought the items were overpriced and nothing wowed us. We ordered the salad rolls, sizzling saigon crepe, and ginger beef. The ginger beef was okay, but the portions were small considering it cost approximately $12.99. The salad rolls were supposed to come with prawn but each roll only had one little prawn inside, the rest was filled with noodles. The biggest disappointment was the crepe. The server informed us we were supposed to use our hands and stuff it with the herbs that come with it. However, the whole crepe was so greasy that touching it with our hands was unthinkable. It had duck in it but the duck had frostbite and was tough. It had prawns, but they weren't de-shelled. I assume when eating crepes that everything inside is edible and chewable, but we had to pick out the prawns to peel them before eating them. Kind of defeats the purpose of a crepe. The herbs were tasty, but all the stems were kept on and the stems were thick and also tough. We ended up chewing off just the leaves, and were left with a little pile of long sinewy stems. Too bad. Will not return.

Amazing. Try the Tamarind Prawns, Shakin Beef and for dessert the Donuts! Delicious

This is probably my favourite restaurant in this neighborhood. Everything I've tried has been outstanding, but 2 of my faves are the duck sliders (appy) and the Sizzling Saigon Crepe (entree). The crepe is so unusual and delicious, it's like nothing I've ever tried before. Hard to explain, just try it!

Tasty food. I really wanted to try the pork belly so I ordered take out dinner. It was very hard to resist the tempting smell leaking from my package of food on my way back. Chicken wing with tamarind sauce was very tasty. Kinda reminded me of pad thai sauce I make with tamarind, coconut sugar and fish source but much better version.
Braised pork belly was tender and really good. The egg comes with it absorbed the cooking juice and very good accompaniment to the cold beer. I liked the texture of broken rice especially with the sauce from the pork. I just felt I needed more rice to finish them up.

One downside is there was some soil left on pickled vegetables (on the Chinese green) May be it hadn't been washed properly?

I would like to go back and eat at Broken Rice again.
Redflavour
A Tale of Two Menus. We arrived never having tried the place before with a large party. The "Dining Out" Menu was inventive, tasty Asian fusion (never an easy accomplishment). I had a chance to sample each course offered (other than the 'squid ate the spring roll') and all other dishes were pleasing to the palate. The betel-wrapped beef was my favorite and the dessert of crushed animal crackers was my least favorite.

Expecting something similar at lunch led to the three of us that returned salivating with little more than disappointment. Only the salad rolls were good. The Lemongrass chicken was not fresh, the noodle dish far too spicy -- even for those who crave chili and the deep fried items tended to be greasy. So, nearly sub-par Pho place by day, Inventive Asian Fusion by night.
HQ
This used to be my favourite in the the neighbourhood but it looks like they've changed ownership recently. Service used to be friendly and attentive but is now below average. The menu looks the same but the food quality which used to be excellent is quite a few notches worse now. Anything deep fried wasn't very crisp and a bit on the greasy side. Soup was too salty. Quite disappointing.
Sealfat
Sunday Dumplings. Sunday special - large, luscious dumplings sitting in a creamy coconut sauce. My taste buds are addicted to the combination of Shiso leaf and the remaining sauce.

Broken Everything. Not much to say but the food was subpar and the service was average. Living in North Burnaby this is not the greatest option in the area.
Glen
Food is to inconsistent.

They also don't have the red thai chilli peppers for the pho soup.
GP
The food is terrible and service is lacking!!!! Trying to be trending with an over price meun. No thanks. Never again.

Fabulous find. Ignore this place for lunch when it's a typical Vancouver Pho joint. Instead visit at dinner when the entire menu truly represents the vision of the charming owners, who want to introduce Vancouver to a mixture of south Vietnamese street food and the French cuisine that so long dominated the country's culture. Any glitches in service or ambiance pale in comparison to everything that exits the kitchen. We have eaten our way through the menu and have not been disappointed but a few standouts include the salmon ceviche, Saigon crepe, pork belly and beef shank. More expensive than your bog standard Pho/roll offerings, less expensive than you'd imagine possible for such creativity, freshness and flavor. Highly recommended.

Exceptional fresh, flavourful and beautiful dishes. I am thrilled by the food at BR. Elevated Vietnamese inspired by authentic street food and elegant French influenced dishes. The owner is a charming sweet lady who welcomes us every time. There is nothing else quite like this in the city. I have been 3 times now and have loved it every time. Recommend the Vietnamese crepe, Salmon Ceviche, Beef Shank, Chicken Ballotine, and more - everything is so good...lovely decor, friendly service, sophisticated fresh tasting food at reasonable prices....the only things I would change is the muzak that is playing, expand the wine list a bit nd add cushions to the chairs which are beautiful but hard.... other than that, do yourself a favour and go!

One of the best springrolls I had from here!

Wonderfully fresh ingredients. Delicious combinations of flavors. This is our 2nd visit & we will definitely be back!

Very good overall. We've been meaning to try this place for a while - it took a long time for it to open after the sign went up. And we'll certainly be back!

The cassava fries were ok, the fish sauce tamarind wings were yummy (great crunch), the shaken beef was wonderful (but the rice was overcooked/mushy) - we'll certainly have that again. The chicken claypot was good. Comfort food.

The formality of the room doesn't match the comfort of the food. They should consider getting rid of the white tableclothes. And the chairs were so heavy!

Anyway, we liked the food and we'll be back for more.

Food is good. Portions are pretty small though. Service is only ok. Not enough waitresses for the amount of customers.

Great food fair prices. I'm sooo glad they got rid of the canned chinese musac.. i have a couple favourites .. the prawn mango slad and Uncle Hings wings.. i tried the tamarind fish sauce ones and they were great.. give it a try .. i think you will be impressed ..!!

Slurrp slurrp. One of the best Vietnamese Restaurant on Hastings Street. I have being here over dozen times. Each time I come here I always bring someone new. All of us agree that the food is good and good service. The restaurant is decorated very tastfully not your typical Vietnamese joint. The price is very reasonable. I know they do not use MSG in their dishes. Usually when there is MSG my mouth start to be very dry.
I come here for the food, service and ambience. One of my favorite dish is the Stew Beef with Rice Noodle in Broth.
They have a "real Menu" now.
Phun Ying.

Great food for a good price!. The staff is friendly and the food was great. I will definitely be heading back to try a few more items off of their menu especially since they will be a part of Dine out.

http://www.brokenrice.ca/menus/dine-out-vancouver-2013/

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Broken Rice! The food was spot on and very well priced and great quality. The presentation was clean and beautiful. Everyone was very friendly and the service was wonderful ! All seven of us will be back again!
Home-Baker-604
Good but pricey. Food was good - but not better than other pho places. I like the decor - modern/fusion. The value wasn't great - the portions are small for the price you pay. But I guess that's how fusion/modern-nice-looking places are like. I also find Japanese iza-kaya places pricier than normal. I guess I would say this is the "iza-kaya" version of Vietnamese noodle places.
Ryan
Nice looking restaurant , but unless you're trying to impress someone , it's not very good. The portions are small and with the price of a bowl of pho there i can get two bigger bowls of pho at triple coconut , a few doors down.

Went here for lunch with my boyfriend and was really impressed. the food and service was really good. will definatley be here again. the waitress told us that the dinner menu is a bit different than lunch with a different "mood" can't wait to go again!

Great customer service. Filled water and cleared plates promptly. Great food. The food is not the typical Vietnamese food you expect for restaurants in the area. Dessert was really good!! Had the caramel custard flan and it was mouth watering. Would visit again to try some more items.

Great new place to eat. Was excited to see a new Vietnamese place in North Burnaby. Took the family and a Vietnamese friend along to try it out. We were not dissapointed. It was great. We ordered 5 different menu items and share them. So great and very reasonably priced. We will definately go back again and again.

Great food. Best spring rolls ever - worth the visit just for those. Also had mango salad which was very tasty. Friends had lemongrass chicken and pork 3 ways which were also good. Will be back yum!!

Amazing food. My boyfriend and his friend originally intended to go to Chez Meme Baguette Bistro but the lineup was too long. They decided to walk a little further and decided to try this place and kept raving about their wings and duck pockets. So I decided to drag my boyfriend to Broken Rice to try their food.

We got deep fried spring rolls, chicken wings, duck pockets and a beef pho with rare beef/beef balls. I can honestly say (I'm asian so i could say that when it comes to asian food i have a very high expectation/standards) this is the best pho I've ever had in lower mainland. Broth was fresh, non greasy...maybe because they do not use MSG in their foods. I rarely finish my pho whenever i go out for pho but this one stood NO CHANCE! oh and to talk about their chicken wings, AMAZING, it was a little spicy with a bit of sweetness ...perfect combination!

service was awesome, friendly staff, pretty interior....Im DEFINITELY coming back for my next pho/vietnamese food cravings

Pretty terrible dinner experience. I'm going to do my best not to complain but only to warn others -- because they're newly opened I imagine being overly harsh would be unfair.
First of all, walking into the restaurant. Pretty flowers on every table but the A/C was blasting. No water or tea for a good 10-15 minutes. Upon inspecting the menu I noticed a fish of the day special as well as a dessert of the day, neither of which were explained by the waiter on entering, which would have been nice.
I went in with my caucasian family and looking around the restaurant noticed that every other table (all occupied by asian customers) had chopsticks, except us. As someone who finds prejudice and racism very upsetting, this was very displeasing.
Our appetizers came after one person got their meal, the rest of the meals took 20 minutes to come, and one person's meal was apparently forgotten, even though it was written down. All of the other meals were cold by the time it came.
I ordered the deconstructed pho soup, slightly disappointed they didn't offer pho at dinnertime but satisfied that there was something similar offered. When it came I was impressed with the cooking of the meat, but the noodles were completely inedible. They were supposed to be fried but they just tasted undercooked. It was impossible to chew them. I left the restaurant hungry.

This is the most important part of this review - they don't take credit/debit yet. There is NO warning outside about this. Don't go in there without cash!

Overall I was very disappointed but supposedly their lunch is pretty good, so perhaps one more chance once they're more established would be fair.
Brooklyn
They're open!. I went here tonight with my boyfriend. They just opened today. As such, the menu is still limited - they don't have the dinner menu items yet, but the lunch menu is impressive. I was particularly pleased that they have a vegetarian section on their lunch menu. Most lunch items were between $8 and $10, with a few meals up to $12.

As soon as we sat down we were served tea in a cute teapot. I ordered the Vietnemese Crepe. The presentation was impressive. It came on a huge plate, with the crepe in the centre surrounded by huge leaves of lettuce, fresh herbs, and slices of tomato and cucumber. The value was great; it was a lot of food. I think next time I will try something lighter though.

Out of curiosity, we shared the coffee ice cream for dessert. A large scoop of vanilla ice cream in a pool of strong iced coffee, topped with what I think was vanilla sauce, served in a martini glass. Yum! My boyfriend doesn't even really like coffee and he enjoyed it.

I will absolutely be back. Even for vegetarians they have a huge menu, it'll take quite a few visits just to try everything!
Stan
Be patient.... Yeah, I pass by there every day and have wondered. Some locals have told me they're busy remodeling the kitchen. Others tell me they're having problems with the local bureaucracy.

Maybe it's a bit of both and/or other factors.

Anyway, I went by yesterday and saw a workman come out. He said the kitchen has been re-done and the restaurant will be opening very soon.

It should be an interesting addition to the scene on The Heights.

Update: It opened Aug 07 and I stopped by for a light lunch. The tamerind sauce on the chicken wings was interesting, but too salty for my taste. Not to say I didn't like them, but I normally eat "low salt" at home. The deep fried spring rolls were very nice indeed.

The Second Coming.. This is more likely to happen than the opening of this restaurant. There has been a sign out front for MONTHS claiming the restaurant will open soon. Its seems clear they have run out of money. This is not a good sign for a new business. I've waited less time for a product launch from apple. The least they could do is get a website that informs us of its progress.

Solid Vietnamese food done a little differently and with a bit more care and attention than your standard Vietnamese restaurant. Worth another visit!

... incredibly crisp, juicy and tender, completely infused w butter & garlic, though I wish there was an actual dipping bowl for the butter...
J At Vanbrosia.com
... soup was slightly lacking in quantity though, as you can clearly see from the picture, it was more like a 'sauce' portion than a soup, but the flavor was very good, slightly spicy but tasty w strong notes of coconut...

....a worthy alternative (if not more so in my opinion) to the regular shrimp salad rolls which are so overdone; quite a hefty portion of lettuce (at least 2/3 of the roll), yet this didn't deter the roll from still tasting great! (remember I don't eat greens); chinese sausage flavor not too strong, slightly subtle actually, would have liked it just a tad stronger

We were here on the recommendation of one of my guests, having had the food once before he deeming it worth a second round. The name “Broken Rice” was pretty catchy. I believe it spoke to the texture and type of rice served, I guess we would soon find out. The decor was unlike any other Vietnamese restaurant I have been too. The restaurant was dressed modern and kept very tidy. From the exterior stone veneer and outdoor seating, to the crisp white table cloths paired with their gloss black chairs. Wooden chairs so hard that we left our meal with flattened bottoms and aching backs. The French influences on the Vietnamese culture was evident here through the table linens and oil painted art work. A Parisian night in the city, framed in gold and hanging gingerly against an otherwise stark white wall. The nods to the Vietnamese culture came from traditional artifacts and specific design elements. A row of teapots lined the top of an antique looking curio. The former used ornamentally and t

I was surprised when I was presented with a simple, well designed and easy to read two page menu. It wasn't a large booklet that is an indecisive eaters' worst nightmare. Another thing that I noticed on the menu was it didn't offer variations upon variations of Pho.

Broken Rice is a Vietnamese restaurant on Hastings Street in Burnaby. We weren't really planning to have a meal there but we were waiting for Glenburn Soda to open next door so we had a second lunch there. The four of us just ordered a few appetizers to share. My parents have been here before and they liked it ,and from what I tasted, I liked it, too. The dishes tasted fresh and delicious. The service seemed a little slow though. Next time, I'd like to try the Sizzling Saigon Crepe! Green papaya salad Spring rolls Pork & Shrimp Salad Rolls

I ordered the pork cooked 3 ways on broken rice so to get a good sampling of their foods. So there's a pork chop, pork cake (for my lack of memory, in Vietnamese "Cha") and shredded pork. The pork chop was CRAZY! The most tender pork chop i've ever had in my life, and i've had a lot of pork chops. Its pretty thin and fatty, the seasoning is the standard lemongrass and sugar maybe with other stuff that i dont know about. It is grilled to a medium done cooking. The parts around the bone were slightly pinkish leading me to think that. Parenthesis... why do i hear all the time that you should leave the bone in when grilling meat? for taste, i agree, but some chefs say bone is a good conductor of heat, so how come the least cooked parts of the meat is always against the bone??? I dont buy that theory.

It was pretty good, lots of flavour and you get your own little dish with the sides. Really glad this place came with the sawtooth herb too...

....almost everything I tasted here was strong in flavor and executed with care. I love the level of creativity that the chef has and the passion that radiates from every dish.

It was very well presented. The plate was pork three ways, a grilled pork chop, shredded pork and minced pork loaf on broken rice served a side salad and a spring roll (for +$2). I thought everything was delicious and flavourful. my favourite would be the pork loaf. It’s truly a Viet delicacy because they don’t have this at every Viet restaurant in the Lower Mainland. The spring roll was also a nice edition and well worth it.

One day I was passing by Hastings and I saw Broken Rice. It’s great that a good amount of new restaurants are popping up in the area, it makes me really excited because this area his my “hood”. Not in a gangster way or anything, but I love new restaurants when I see them. Their dishes range from traditional items to more modern Vietnamese dishes featuring French influences. The interior gives a bit of a semi-fancy vibe, which is reflected in their menu as well. It’s not as cheap as your usual Pho restaurants. You probably don’t want to come here and order the usual Vietnamese items. Tea comes in a cool looking teapot and cups. I don’t know what tea it is, but it was good stuff! Fresh Coconut ($5) is what M ordered. He loves fresh coconut and no bottle coconut water can even compare. It’s a really refreshing drink and they give you a spoon so you can eat the coconut meat inside. Duck Sliders ($5) has duck confit, cilantro, onions, and pickled vegetables inside a steamed bun. The sliders

I have heard lots about Broken Rice from people in my neighbourhood, with mixed opinions, so I decided to give it a try myself. They have updated their menu from the original version, and now have eight different types of pho versus the one deconstructed offering they used to have. We started off with the Phnom Penh Salad Roll ($5.95). There were two reasons why we tried this, first was the name, anything named Phnom Penh has to be good, right? After all, Phnom Penh is a classic in Vancouver. The other reason was the ingredients...they use Chinese Sausage in these! Well, they were executed properly, wrapped tightly with a good combination of vermicelli, romaine (instead of the usual iceberg), shredded carrots and thing slices of Chinese sausage. Unfortunately, the sausage is a bit tough to bite through, and you end up pulling the whole piece out with your first bite. The concept is good, but instead of sliced sausages, maybe juliennes of them would work better. We decided to share one

What was supposed to be rare round steak was more like medium rare brisket in consistency. It didn’t fan out into nice wide slices; I got some clumpy chunks instead. The broth, while flavorful, was quite one-dimensional. It just tasted “beefy,” lacking in the usual “herby” element that you’d get from ingredients like the star anise

Come with an open mind and don’t come seeking authenticity, although they don’t take you for an idiot. This is more French style Vietnamese food with modern Canadian flair. Vietnam was a French owned colony and her inspiration also comes from living in Canada for over thirty years. The style is different, so come with the right mind set.

The desserts at Broken Rice are traditional and modern, but made with care and thought. Some are original to the restaurant and I would recommend trying some because they are different, but I’m not sure if it is something I would have to order again. All ice cream and sorbets are made in house.

There are no short cuts here. Their passion to do something different and creative may come across as “fusion” or “Western”, but there is a lot of thought and professional execution going into their recipes, quality of ingredients and end presentation. The dinner menu offers more creativity.

Broken Rice is where Yen exercises her creativity, and while some dishes were just okay, some were actually excellent and overall everything was good. Pholicious
The pho came very well-presented, and had pretty good portions. There was also a good amount of beef slices, which were all good quality. Noodles were firm, and the broth was flavorful, but came with too much MSG, which really affected its score.
