I like it here. Nice folks, carefully prepared food and close to home (at least for me). I ordered the Sashimi Sushi Dinner Box on my first visit and to my delight, it arrived on a boat. The sashimi and nigiri were skillfully cut, at least to my amateur eye and were fresh and firm with nicely prepared rice.I enjoyed the tempura with its thin crispy batter while the shrimp and vegetables were not overcooked. I am not a big fan of what seem like novelty rolls to me (every place has them) but the house roll was not too bad except for the spicy tuna mix on top which bordered on too soft for my tastes. The boat was preceded by a refreshing ebi sunomono and miso soup. All together a nice value at $16.95. On my next visit, I tried their home made gyoza which were very good. Thin skin delivered hot to my table with a nice sear. The Takoyaki were also very good. This I know, as it is the one treat that will get me to brave the crowds at the Richmond Night Market. Sometimes I have had them (not here) where they were not well enough cooked inside and just seem like raw pancake batter. At Maruya they were perfect. I love how the bonito flakes curl and move as they meet the hot Takoyaki. Finally I tried Aburi ( one piece salmon and one piece tuna) for the first time. Maybe it is just not going to be my thing, despite being the hot sushi tend at the moment, as I felt like the sear spoiled what would have been perfectly good nigiri. I will be back to Maruya for sure!
Yummy. Good food here but the portions should be bigger ie: chicken yakiudon
